The Mendacity of Nope [Video Update - Laugh a Minute!]

Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal (R) was chosen to deliver the GOP response to President Obama's address to congress tonight.  He's young, he's arguably more cool than Fred Thompson and he's measurably less white - which is obviously all that the surviving Republican leadership has learned from recent political events - so he was the obvious choice as the GOP's answer to Obama.

His challenge was to follow an inspirational speech delivered by a popular president during a time of great national stress and not sound like a total Buzz Killington.

Nice try, Gov. Jindal.  Thanks for coming out - but you can go home, now.

chrisblask :: The Mendacity of Nope [Video Update - Laugh a Minute!]
For the first half of the speech I wasn't sure where the Governor was going.  He seemed to be kind of repeating the president's speech, just in a "talking to a class of first-grader's" tone of voice rather than that "leader of the world" tenor that President Obama managed to strike.

He used the destruction of New Orleans to make his points about why the public should embrace the GOP.  I'm still a little too stunned by that approach to comment on it, so I leave that for the reader to ponder.

Then the talons came out:

You elected Republicans to champion limited government, fiscal discipline, and personal responsibility. Instead, Republicans went along with earmarks and big government spending in Washington. Republicans lost your trust - and rightly so.

Oooo!  You so told, um, You!  Don't let you give you any guff about it, either.  You just tell you where you get off.  You, um, betcha!

hmmm...

Speaking of irrelevant Republican Governors, as an attempt at the kind of "gotcha politics" so recently frowned on by an Alaskan Governor whose name is rapidly fading from memory, Gov. Jindal pulled a line of the president's to use as a red flag:

"A few weeks ago, the President warned that our nation is facing a crisis that he said 'we may not be able to reverse.' Our troubles are real, to be sure. But don't let anyone tell you that we cannot recover - or that America's best days are behind her."

Now, if that didn't completely miss what the President Obama had just finished saying - and if it wasn't delivered like you suspected the viewers at home to be illiterate tundra farmers with bilateral frostbite - there might have been a bit of sting in that.  But as it was it left me wanting to help Gov. Jindal back to his room and making sure he got the kind of understanding care that would help him adjust to life outside the Institute, someday...

The President's speech hit the press at 3pm this afternoon, Governor.  You could have read it before writing your response, or failing that you could have watched it before delivering your own.  And if you did both of those things, and still delivered the speech you did?  In that case I suggest you stay inside and play with the Nice Colored Blocks while the big kids get back to running the nation.

His performance was remarkably poor. Given everything I read (2.00 / 9)
about him, he seems like a radical religious fundamentalist.

He talks like a fill-in teacher for primary grades, (2.00 / 8)
who is later found to have a very disturbing pron collection.  That mincing disconnect that only the real sociopaths manage to pull off.

But maybe I over react...

I have been subbing in primary grades (2.00 / 5)
a lot (though most of my years in teaching were in the middle grades).   The truth is that Jindal sounded like the new teacher, the person who never taught, is not a natural at it and should not be there, and THINKS primary teachers talk that way.  Good primary teachers would NEVER do what Jindal did....talked down, slow and enunciated as if children cannot understand.

I am subbing in Kindergarten today for one of the best K teachers I ever saw.  She would laugh hysterically, shake her head in disbelief and then explain that one does not talk down to children.

I was actually embarrassed for Jindal ....he was awful..

[ Parent ]
He was not only awful, (2.00 / 4)
but the President was amazing, and the contrast is stark for the republicans.

That's got to be the funniest... (2.00 / 4)
...most perceptive comment in days. I'm going to steal BOTH lines, Chris. Appearing in a script soon.

Can I just say, while Jindal is clearly an idiotic Republican reaction to Obama (and an insulting example of their residual identity politics) what a f**king brilliant speech Obama gave. Really. I mean, because he's been quiet with actually RUNNING the country, I sometimes forget what a great leader you have these days. Oratory, dignity, intellect, poise - for sure. But he has something else, a real vision of how to get out of this mess. He's a thinker who responds to reality. He's not just a realist, he's a sorealist.

In these dark days, you can't get much better than that.

The students, led by Susan's sister and Louise, a member of a charismatic church, engaged in loud and desperate prayers while holding Susan with one hand. Kneeling on the ground, my friends were chanting, "Satan, I command you to leave this woman." Others exhorted all "demons to leave in the name of Christ." It is no exaggeration to note the tears and sweat among those assembled. Susan lashed out at the assembled students with verbal assaults.

...

Maybe she sensed our weariness; whether by plan or coincidence, Susan chose the perfect opportunity to attempt an escape. She suddenly leapt up and ran for the door, despite the many hands holding her down. This burst of action served to revive the tired group of students and they soon had her restrained once again, this time half kneeling and half standing.

.....

While Alice and Louise held Susan, her sister continued holding the Bible to her face. Almost taunting the evil spirit that had almost beaten us minutes before, the students dared Susan to read biblical passages. She choked on certain passages and could not finish the sentence "Jesus is Lord." Over and over, she repeated "Jesus is L..L..LL," often ending in profanities. In between her futile attempts, Susan pleaded with us to continue trying and often smiled between the grimaces that accompanied her readings of Scripture. Just as suddenly as she went into the trance, Susan suddenly reappeared and claimed "Jesus is Lord."

With an almost comical smile, Susan then looked up as if awakening from a deep sleep and asked, "Has something happened?" She did not remember any of the past few hours and was startled to find her friends breaking out in cheers and laughter, overwhelmed by sudden joy and relief.

Sure you felt funny, you freak, you were involved in Forcible Confinement which verges on Kidnapping, a heinous federal crime.  And of course she was "healed", it was the only way to get free of you weirdos...

Ha! (2.00 / 8)
Jindal shot himself in the foot tonight.  With an Uzi.  Until it was empty. From PBS News Hour (emphasis mine):

JIM LEHRER: Now that, of course, was Gov. Bobby Jindal, the governor of Louisiana, making the Republican response. David, how well do you think he did?

DAVID BROOKS: Uh, not so well. You know, I think Bobby Jindal is a very promising politician, and I oppose the stimulus because I thought it was poorly drafted. But to come up at this moment in history with a stale "government is the problem," "we can't trust the federal government" - it's just a disaster for the Republican Party. The country is in a panic right now. They may not like the way the Democrats have passed the stimulus bill, but that idea that we're just gonna - that government is going to have no role, the federal government has no role in this, that - In a moment when only the federal government is actually big enough to do stuff, to just ignore all that and just say "government is the problem, corruption, earmarks, wasteful spending," it's just a form of nihilism. It's just not where the country is, it's not where the future of the country is. There's an intra-Republican debate. Some people say the Republican Party lost its way because they got too moderate. Some people say they got too weird or too conservative. He thinks they got too moderate, and so he's making that case. I think it's insane, and I just think it's a disaster for the party. I just think it's unfortunate right now.

It's a terrible thing to look over your shoulder when you are trying to lead, and find no one there. -Franklin Roosevelt

There's an intra-Republican debate. Some people say (a) the Republican Party lost its way because they got too moderate. Some people say (b) they got too weird or too conservative.

Um, Bobby and all the rest of the GOP?  The answer is (a).  Take it from one of the tens of millions who has voted for your party in the past: you didn't lose me because you weren't weird enough.  In fact, the people you won't lose no matter what you do are the ones who think you aren't weird enough: you can't lose them, they have nowhere to go.

I have somewhere to go.  And I went there as part of a thundering herd that are not likely to come back anytime soon.

And Brooks comparing the Republicans to nihilists?!??!  So sweet...sweet indeed.  Sad that our country is in such a shit state, but I thought it would happen 8 years ago.  But the angry vengeful side of me was all about Obama looking at the Republicans and PAUSING to stare at them when he said that "With the deficit we inherited".  The Dems stood up, applauded.  ACCOUNTABILITY.  And Jindal comes along and talks some sort of bullshit about the amorphous outside thing that caused it.  FAIL.

Yeah, THAT'S RIGHT, ya rat bastids.  You fucked it all up for us, and we're here to take back our country.  So get on board or get left behind.  We all know that you're waiting for the apocalypse to sweep you up anyways.

He almost went in the right direction, noting Republicans had lost the trust of the American people, but still tried to play it off on the Democrats by ignoring the fact it was the Republican congress/administration leading the efforts to spend five trillion dollars in eight years

The intellectual incoherence is stunning. Basically, the political philosophy of the GOP right now seems to consist of snickering at stuff that they think sounds funny. The party of ideas has become the party of Beavis and Butthead.

I find that I agree with that discription.

And what was with his entrance? (2.00 / 3)
Was that some sort of Faux Presidential reference?

And why was it a Governor?  Was that in keeping with the Republicans hate the federal government theme?

And what in the hell was with the Katrina references?  We all know that New Orleans was not rebuilt by the federal government or the state government.

It all makes my head hurt.  And maybe in 2 years time if this shit continues we will have a supermajority.  Not that having a lack of opposition is a good thing, but they really are standing in the way of progress right now.

I think we've already had that election. (2.00 / 4)
Old Man McCain served as the throw-away candidate. I'm more concerned with the 2010 election than I am with the 2012 one.

When 2012 rolls around the economy will either have improved or it won't. If it does then the Dems can take credit for it. If it doesn't then they will need to show that it would have been worse if we had employed Repulican policies.

2010, on the other hand, will be a lot more difficult. First we have to fight historical trends that point to a loss for the governing party during a mid-term election in a President's first term. Think 1994. Let's hope 2010 is an exception to this rule.

There are other worries about 2010. The economy may be slow to respond to Keynesian policies. If that happens and the Republicans can convince enough people that it will never help then we are in big trouble.

The Democrats need to do several things between now and the mid-term elections. They must recruit good candidates, they must raise lots and lots of money, they must push back against Republican lies and spin (this is where we can help), they must clearly articulate the differences between conservative and progressive policies (thank god for Obama), and they must have their ground game in high gear come Oct/Nov 2010.

On top of everything we have to do we also have to hope the DOW isn't at 4000 and unemployment isn't still rising 15 months from now.
