Sexist Asses on Michelle Obama.

I'm pissed. And for that reason I cannot really formulate a coherent response to this pile of fail:

[partial transcript starting about 1:45] Mohr: I'd like to talk about the basketball playoffs, I'd like to talk about "King" [LeBron] James, this guy could actually be greater than Michael Jordan. I'd like to talk about Kevin Garnett. This guy's the Michelle Obama of the Celtics: he doesn't really do anything, but damn, he looks good, doesn't he, Jim? Michelle Obama-that is a big dude. When Barack plays pick-up games at the White House, you know he picks Michelle as at least his forward, maybe his [center], depending on who's in Congress that day. That has to be like being married to Elton Brand. She is a big. dude. I like when she put her arm around the Queen of England and she put her in a headlock and told her, "I've been waiting 200 years to put my arms around you, lady!" I love that. I like how she shaved off all her eyebrows, and then drew them back way too high into an arch and then straight back down, so she always looks super surprised. She kinda-Michelle Obama kinda looks like the Count on Sesame Street, that's great. [mimicking the Count] "One, ah, ah, ah. One black President, ah, ah, ah."

Luckily though, there are a couple of people that have an appropriate reaction.

Holly over at Feminste writes:

Real classy way to treat the First Lady - but if you ask me, Jay Mohr has always been about as funny as a week-old sack of dead rats. He's clearly whipping out his most tired material for Rome's sports-radio army of clones, too. Scott Madin noted over at Shakesville that there are even more racist, transphobic jokes (somehow related to steroids and gynecomastia, I guess?) later on in the clip, at about 3:30.

Over at Shakesville Madin handily notes:

Rome's website is here, and it looks like at least one of his features is sponsored by Chevy. According to Wikipedia, he's syndicated by "Premiere Radio Networks, a subsidiary of Clear Channel Communications," and also hosts a show on ESPN. Judging from the clip, I'm guessing writing to Rome's show will not be productive, but contacting Clear Channel, ESPN, and/or advertisers (in a quick search I wasn't able to find out anything about other advertisers, but Chevy's contact page is here) might be more effective.

Nothing funnier than a dash of transphobic misogyny?

One last note, thanks to pear_shaped_Sara in comments at Shakesville: here's what Michelle Obama's eyebrows looked like when she was a kid.
Jay Mohr's Stupid Assumptions: 0.
Insanely Awesome Eyebrows: 1.

Thanks for the photo 'cause (as shallow as this might make me) (2.00 / 3)
I've hated her eyebrows because I thought they were drawn that way.  I, however, do value Michelle for more than her spectacular fashing sense, her insanely toned arms, her obviously wonderful parenting skills, and her exceptional taste in men.

My elementary school pictures also make me glad I'm not famous.  Ugh!

Joy Mohr is an ass, always has been.  I bet Michelle could kick his ass without working up a sweat.

Of course, that would be Jay Mohr, not Joy. Unless he has a drag name (2.00 / 1)
and he's trying to hide it by over compensating the hate on Michelle.

God, I hope I'm not supposed to know who Jay Morr is, (2.00 / 1)
If so, I can start failing that one right now.

(BTW, those are pretty cool eyebrows.  She looked like she knew exactly how much trouble she could be when she was a kid, bet her mom has lots of stories... :~)

Jay Mohr has made a career (2.00 / 2)
of being a pleasant faced douche. That's what he does.

But, oddly enough, he filed to have his name changed to take his wife's name. Though, that would make his name Cox-Mohr, which actually fits his exaggerated douche bag personality. His appearances on Rome's show are fairly consistent as his "Slam Man."

It's what he do. All God's chill'uns gots to be what they is. Birds gots to fly. Fish got to swim. Asshats got to be all they can be, because the Universe needs assholes to set apart the saints...

I'm not offended by Mohr's comments, (2.00 / 1)
I've never thought he's funny and I'm a woman. Comedians have always made fun of famous figures particularly American presidents and First Ladies, it's what they do. I distinctly remember various comments on the 'manliness' of Barbara Bush and that didn't offend me either. A comedian may or may not make me laugh, but I support their right to speak as they wish as long as they're not breaking any laws.

I do understand why some feminists dislike these types of comments, as is their choice, but I also personally think that it is important to be consistently feminist. I have noticed too many women who are offended by negative comments regarding women they like, but decline to protest equally the denigrating comments about women they dislike. When we engage in this, we weaken the feminist argument.

It's similar to certain extreme elements comparing Obama with Hitler and alternately, Bush with Hitler; each side felt perfectly justified making such a wild statement, but screamed to the rafters when it was turned on their guy. I'm disgusted by the statement on principle and I don't care who it's being directed at. If I dislike nasty comments I do so across the board.

i agree about the hypocrisy of some feminists... (0.00 / 0)
in fact - i was quite shook up about what many on the left did and said to palin.  so much so that i stopped blogging for a while.

but water under the bridge.
