And now for something completely indifferent...

In the midst of all this impending Tea Party Triumphalism, I popped over to the old D for some nostalgia and comic relief.  If you think that Jack Landsman jumped that place over a few hundred sharks as a frontpager, he's got nothing on changeagain2012.
Strummerson :: And now for something completely indifferent...
I couldn't help aiding and abetting his:

"Did Obama Royalist Enforcer Thugs Run Everybody Off From MyDD"

(I should know how to simply link the title by now).

Childish to get involved, I know.  I chalk it up to grading my way through a pile of midterms while ill.

And this brilliant Pumagressive is gracing the front page as well with:

"The Only Politician Obama May Personally Get Elected Isn't Even A Dem. How Obama's Choice Is Screwing Rhode Island Democrats."

Don't bother for anything other than entertainment's sake.  If it upsets your stomach, stay away.  But it's a bit of a relief from reminding my students that all sentences actually require verbs and that they should stay away from invoking "history" and "human nature" in support of their arguments.

At least we don't live where Brit does.  Saving the economy by throwing 500,000 public sector employees out of work seems bizarre from a variety of perspectives.  Hope it's not in the cards this side of "the pond."

Stay strong all.

is pure garbage.  when 'richard flatts' is the clear-eyed, level headed thinker of the lot, you've got problems.  the site is dead.

Not the only time

There definitely is a sect out there that are are forcefully pushing hate politics. I was reminded by this of the election day harassment to voters at the voting area. Maybe you remember the two men of the New Black Panther organization outside of a voting area in Philadelphia with night sticks, or billy clubs. This type of thuggery, unfortunately, are also a demographic voting base for president Obama.  And it seems that Jerome was extending a violent arm to the online internet world as well.

As part of a GOTV I'm going to post a diary about the ridiculous deficit cutting going on here, which has shades of neo-liberal 1931 all over it.

Half a million public sector workers out of a job. Knock on of at least half a million in the private sector too thanks to the reverse multiplier effect.

So... remember. Vote. Or things could be worse.

Had brunch with a close family friend this morning who is an economist and public policy professor here at U of M (after leaving a tenured Harvard position because his wife hated Cambridge).  He was trained at the University of Chicago of all places.  Good friend and frequent collaborator with Goolsbee.  So, as you might expect, he's not quite as dismissive of laissez-faire economics as I am.  He thinks this whole move is an absolutely absurd maneuver, cynically manipulated by the wealthiest and primarily motivated by a panic that Britain will wake up and find itself in Greece's position.  But he thinks it makes no economic sense.

RE: Hey changeagain2012
OK.  You don't like snide, I'll give it to you straight.

First, I don't have a "type."  I don't leap to pre-judging others by forcing them into "types" either.  Your posture as the object of political repression shows a total lack of historical perspective and ethics.  Read a book, you stupid fuck.  Real blood has been spilled, voices have actually been silenced, entire peoples and perspectives have been materially marginalized with actual weapons and at the cost of actual lives.  Some of them in my own family.  This poseurism is offensive to anyone who is actually engaged in the history of progressive politics, or history in general.  It's the same self-aggrandizing bullshit victimology exhibited by the tea thugs.  Just the mirror image.  Anyone been interred in a re-education camp, sent to the gulag, disappeared in the past two years?  Don't even try to equate anything that has happened with political repression.  It's disgusting.  Beneath contempt.

It's your "silly" mentality that paints everyone who disagrees with your self-serving tone and absolutist perspective.  You reveal yourself as a hypocrite by using your supposed victimhood to attack others.  You don't like vicious savage name-calling?  Don't call others names.  You don't want to be branded with a broad brush, don't paint everyone else with a broad brush.  I agree with many of the critiques of Obama, but you wouldn't know that, because you are too busy pigeon-holing people so that your limited worldview can make sense of them.  For the record, I have no real beef with Jerome.  I don't always agree with him.  If he wants to ban me, then fine.  But it won't be because I showed him any disrespect.  And while you are busy defending him, remember that he's no victim.  He runs the place.  He can ban whomever he likes at any time.  He banned plenty whom you would label "o-bots" during the primary and afterwards.  I know it doesn't fit your idiotic narrative, but that's how it works.

I'll remember your description of me as "less than useless" when I am putting aside my students and my family to work GOTV this Tues. to try to "earn" something positive while you will no doubt be crafting another self-righteous diatribe and reveling in your glorious grievances.

So let loose another bile-soaked diatribe that accomplishes nothing.

Just remember that YOU are why moderates and independents mock liberals and progressives.  You are a fucking cartoon.  I've just been letting off some steam with you and providing you with more rope.  Now I have a life to get back to.

That's what I really think.

Of course the dodgy software posted it twice, but why are the new trolls on MYDD so illiterate and uninventive these days. I blame the US education system.

Here's the unscrewed up comment:

My names Brit. And I'm an Obama Royalty Enforcer thug,

Let me come clean. This has been weighing on my conscience for too long now. I need to atone, make reparations, confess.

Like most other Koolaid drinkers I'm a British MI6 double agents (or is my Brit handle a triple bluff? Who knows?). During the Primaries we got on our jack boots and stormed all over this place, mainly because we're trying to undo the American Declaration of Independence. Forget your President being a Nazi Muslim Communist. That's the least of your worries. Obama is a secret Brit, born in a former British colonies, and we're going to take our country back, and funnel out all the wealth you've created with your high valued housing stock and banking industry...

Oh. OK.That didn't work. So we deliberately spoilt oil everywhere. Oh yeah. And dominated your TV shows with secret Fifth Columnist Brits speaking in convincing American accents.

The annoying thing is that we had nearly achieved this spectacular reconquista of our old colonies, when you come along and blow the gaff. Thanks to cogent, brave and articulate Lexington militia like you, we've been foiled in our devious plan, and MYDD has been rescued..

As to your points, you're completely correct.

1. All through the primaries this site was filled with Obamabot diaries on the rec list.

2. Fearless freedom fighters like Texas Darlin, Universal and Alegre were consistently denigrated, silenced, censored, imprisoned and tortured by Koolaid drinkers who did like 'argue back', and said Obama could win the election, that he wasn't a Muslim, or lying about his academic career.

Our devious Stalinist Gestapo then pulled the ultimate trick of 'changing reality' and making Obama win the election just to make all those people look stupid.

That's really evil

3. All through this time, Jerome was a model of reasonableness and reconciliation, standing above the fray, almost a God Like figure of sagacity and kindness, who never arbitrarily banned people, or made content free comments against those who disagreed with him, or added abusive tags, or otherwise showed anything other than cool political analysis and judgement.

4. All politics is about being For or Against Obama. Nothing else matters. Political logic, reason, debate be damned. This site would thrive if it just became more Anti Obama.  It would be more progressive. It would be live an unpredictable. Illiterate and uniformed trolls would never post here again. And Jerome would be a millionaire. With so few Anti Obama sites out there (thanks to us Royalist thugs) MYDD would get all the traffic.

5. Do you have a girlfriend or boyfriend? Because I think I love you

BUT here you are.  What does this have to do with the diarist?

You oppose insults and personal attacks.

BUT you come into this diary to do nothing but attack and threaten me.

You want nothing to do with me.

BUT you carry over our dispute from another thread into this one.

Funny.  If it looks like a hypocrite.  If it types like a hypocrite.  You know the rest.

As for blaming me (and my "type," you ridiculous bigot) for destroying MYDD.  This is absurd.  Just part of your twisted persecution complex.  It's a bit circular, you see.  Just because you can't justify this tripe means that you are being bullied.  The fact that someone is willing to stand up to this tripe that you cannot justify means that you are being bullied.  Because you are being bullied, you think your tripe is justified.

Wake up.  It's your "type" of PUMA delusion diaries that destroyed the traffic on this site.

And your boast of being involved in politics at the WH level loses credibility with every post you type.  It's just really hard to believe that the Clintons would have kept this level of thinking around.

But what do I know.  I'm no professional political operative like yourself.  Just a committed activist who thinks that you are trying to aid and abet the enthusiasm gap on the eve of a critical election.  It's not what we need right now.  But of course, your website grievances MUST take precedence.  Shame on you.

For the record, if you did take a swing at me...

"MyDD: Still on beta... will crash and burn early. Save it for another day.

Fallout: Of course this mid-term result is more a rejection of the Democrats, and specifically Obama politics, than it is an embrace of the Republicans. The Obama loyalists will say they are reality-based and that Obama wasn't on the ballot. White liberal intellectuals imply that any potential Democratic '12 challenger is being racially divisive."

And changeagain is cuddling up to you.  He wants to get together over "brown liquid and smokes" to talk about his buddy Hitchens.  All you Brits apparently know one another in his universe.  Just like I know Philip Roth and Anthony Weiner (picked two that I'd like to, but it could be Foxman and Frum as well).

The future is unwritten

[ Parent ]
Surely.... (2.00 / 2)
...Jerome is a vivid example why the progressive left is so weak in American politics. It's all ego and attitudinising. He can't even organise a decent set of frontpagers, let alone a political campaign. Unfortunately I see traits of that in Kos (aswell of Huffington and Hamsher of course). Radical individualism, often collapsing into pure narcissism, is the opposite of organisation and solidarity. I know the latter can decline into Orwellian collectivism... but don't these people understand the basic principles of political power. You have to work with people you don't like.

End of mini rant.

You double agent line reminded me of this article I read in the New Yorker recently... (2.00 / 3)
... on the awesomeness of British spies.

I've always liked Malcolm Gladwell even when I don't agree with him. He makes me think and consider things in a different light. So I was pleasantly suprised when I discovered this piece. I love WW2 history and spy stories so it was the perfect storm of spiff bait.

Operation Mincemeat and spycraft in World War 2

The Germans did not realize-until it was too late-that "William Martin" was a fiction. The man they took to be a high-level courier was a mentally ill vagrant who had eaten rat poison; his body had been liberated from a London morgue and dressed up in officer's clothing. The letter was a fake, and the frantic messages between London and Madrid a carefully choreographed act. When a hundred and sixty thousand Allied troops invaded Sicily on July 10, 1943, it became clear that the Germans had fallen victim to one of the most remarkable deceptions in modern military history.

The story of Major William Martin is the subject of the British journalist Ben Macintyre's brilliant and almost absurdly entertaining "Operation Mincemeat" (Harmony; $25.99). The cast of characters involved in Mincemeat, as the caper was called, was extraordinary, and Macintyre tells their stories with gusto. The ringleader was Ewen Montagu, the son of a wealthy Jewish banker and the brother of Ivor Montagu, a pioneer of table tennis and also, in one of the many strange footnotes to the Mincemeat case, a Soviet spy. Ewen Montagu served on the so-called Twenty Committee of the British intelligence services, and carried a briefcase full of classified documents on his bicycle as he rode to work each morning.

The British are so cool.

I like Gladwell's essays better than his books (2.00 / 3)
And this is a new one to me, so thanks.

I've got some of Ben Macintyre's books (from the airport) and never read them, but will.

Since the German's had better technology (except for aircraft) we had to resort to all kinds of dodgy tricks throughout world war 2, and well into the Cold War. Ian Fleming worked for Naval Intelligence, and created James Bond out of various characters he met from the wartime Special Operations Executive.  Many of their missions were kept secret till now.

But the best bit of all was the great Gay Mathematician and scientist Alan Turing, who not only conceived of the future of computing, he also (through cracking Naval enigma codes) probably shortened the war by 2 years. The code cracking brought Atlantic convoy resupply back up to strength for D-Day.

One famous story I remember from Turing's biography. He was taught by the famously terse and difficult Austrian born philosopher Wittgenstein. The latter used to taunt Turing over all his work on artificial intelligence, binary calculation and the Universal Telling Machine, saying "How will any of your games with numbers do anything to change the world?"

Er.... Oops.

Sadly Turing was chemically castrated because of his sexuality, and died far too young as a result of the side effects.

Just read the whole essay... (2.00 / 3)
and it's a wonderful summation of the problems of intelligence gathering and analysis, with obvious reference to Iraqi WMD.

But I underestimated the importance of fiction in the whole operation.

The idea for Operation Mincemeat, Macintyre tells us, had its roots in a mystery story written by Basil Thomson, a former head of Scotland Yard's criminal-investigation unit. Thomson was the author of a dozen detective stories, and his 1937 book "The Milliner's Hat Mystery" begins with the body of a dead man carrying a set of documents that turn out to be forged. "The Milliner's Hat Mystery" was read by Ian Fleming, who worked for naval intelligence. Fleming helped create something called the Trout Memo, which contained a series of proposals for deceiving the Germans, including this idea of a dead man carrying forged documents. The memo was passed on to John Masterman, the head of the Twenty Committee-of which Montagu and Cholmondeley were members. Masterman, who also wrote mysteries on the side, starring an Oxford don and a Sherlock Holmes-like figure, loved the idea. Mincemeat, Macintyre writes, "began as fiction, a plot twist in a long-forgotten novel, picked up by another novelist, and approved by a committee presided over by yet another novelist.
