Tax the Dead: A Posthumously Open Thread

by: Chris Blask

Wed Sep 21, 2011 at 13:31:25 PM EDT

Stephen Colbert has a great idea: don't stop with taxing just the poor, get the dead to carry their fair share.

Whatcha think, Moose? Is there any reason not to dig up the dead and get them to pitch in so folks making $1M/year don't have to?

Consider this a posthumously Open Thread.

Chris Blask :: Tax the Dead: A Posthumously Open Thread

h/t to BruinKid

So folks, let's not just broaden the tax base.  I say, we need to deepen the tax base.  And let's force these Cadaverican-Americans to pay, in the forms of rings, watches, and whatever else we can pry from their cold dead hands.

I must tell you all, I just found out that I gave a ZERO to a comment of trashablanca's last week. I am totallly

I was here but a short time last week, primarily because my husband was in the hospital for a procedure so I wasn't even home. I will guarandamntee you  that I will never goof up again like that.

I love trashy and would just never do that.

Thank you.

I remember going through the comments one time wondering why someone failed a bunch of them.  Then I realized it was me.  :)

Just so you know, it doesn't really matter. (2.00 / 10)
Ratings here are an expression of feeling (as they should be anywhere, imho), nothing more. Folks use them differently, but it follows a pattern. An erroneous fail is pretty obvious, and folks can always ask if they care.

I fierce most everything most of the time, just to mark that I've been there and encourage folks to talk. Meh is more recent, and usually humorous, but imo it has the real use for disagreement. Fail is forrealz use among Moose a bit of a nuclear option, but if the discussion has gotten that heated then a little bit of fail is probably appropriate (I've been failed by Moose I love, and that's cool).

The only thing that would really tip over the trashcan would be for someone to say [sic]"you hate (teh gays/poor people/men/women/dogs/fish) and want everyone to die!!!!! aaahhh!!!" - or words to that effect. Simply "I don't mehgree with you" or "sorry, but you are being a complete jerkfail about this" isn't more than we all risk for talking about tough stuff with friends.

There is nobody in this country who got rich on his own. Nobody.

You built a factory out there-good for you! But I want to be clear.

You moved your goods to market on the roads the rest of us paid for.

You hired workers the rest of us paid to educate.

You were safe in your factory because of police forces and fire forces that the rest of us paid for.

You didn't have to worry that maurauding bands would come and seize everything at your factory, and hire someone to protect against this, because of the work the rest of us did.

Now look, you built a factory and it turned into something terrific, or a great idea-God bless. Keep a big hunk of it.

But part of the underlying social contract is you take a hunk of that and pay forward for the next kid who comes along. http://www.rumproast.com/index...

"By restoring her to the faculty, even though she has now formed a federal election committee and is actively campaigning, the university is establishing a bad precedent for academic appointments," Nate Little, executive director of the GOP, wrote in a letter to Harvard President Drew Gilpin Faust.
"Of equal concern is that Harvard runs the risk of jeopardizing its tax-exempt status. As a non-profit charitable institution, Harvard is prohibited from taking a position on behalf of or in opposition to a candidate. Your payment of a salary to Professor Warren causes reasonable-minded people to conclude that Harvard is supportive of her candidacy," Little wrote.

Well since this a Open Thread (2.00 / 11)
As some of you may have heard or if you are lucky haven't heard. Ralph Nader and Cornel West have joined their egos in an attempt to find a candidate to mount a primary of President Obama.

Well TNC expresses quite aptly my opinion of this move by Ralphy and Corny -

Despite the claims of working on behalf of the poor, I'm forced to wonder if any of this would be happening had Obama returned a few phone-calls and put in some face-time. The presidential fetish on exhibition here, paired with a non-critique of Congress, the non-recognition of the need to build a more left-leaning electorate is amazing and anti-democratic. Nothing better evidences that than seeing Nader, a man who evidently believes Obama an "Uncle Tom for the corporations," turn around and praise Sarah Palin for her "conservative populism." This isn't progressive. It's personal. And it's reactionary.

Something to pass along to your Republican friends (2.00 / 11)
From Harper's index October 2011 (this is the issue month)

-- Seventy-one percent of current U.S. debt was accumulated during Republican presidential terms.

-- Two-thirds of debt-ceiling elevations since 1960 have been signed into law by Republican presidents.

-- In 1961 the percentage of corporate profits paid in taxes was nearly forty-one; now it is less than eleven.

-- Seventy-five percent of the increase in corporate profit margins since 2001 has come from depressed wages.

But hey don't forget it's all Obama's fault  . . .

Holy Crap (2.00 / 10)
Let the crusades begin:

"I also as a Christian have a clear directive to support Israel, so from my perspective it's pretty easy," Perry said when a reporter asked if Perry's faith was driving his views, according to the Associated Press.

Elizabeth Tenety - Rick Perry: 'As a Christian . . . I stand with Israel' Washington Post 20 Sep 11

And the clear directive?:

A June 2011 Pew Forum poll of American evangelicals showed that nearly half "say the state of Israel is a fulfillment of biblical prophecy about the Second Coming of Jesus" Many point to Genesis 12:3, which reads, "And I will bless them that bless (Israel), and curse him that curseth (Israel)," as scriptural evidence of the need to support the Jewish state.

Elizabeth Tenety - Rick Perry: 'As a Christian . . . I stand with Israel' Washington Post 20 Sep 11

This isn't policy, this is Christianist madness masquerading as policy (h/t Sully):

In the age of Bin Laden, this kind of sectarian bluster would have been bad enough. In the age of the Arab Spring, it's catastrophic. Country after country is grappling with Islam, democracy, and anti-Americanism. The last thing we need is a crusading president who turns the Muslim world against us.

Perry seems eager for such a confrontation. "We have been slow to recognize the risks posed by the new regime in Egypt," he warned yesterday in his prepared remarks. "We must signal to the world, including nations like Turkey and Egypt whom we have considered allies in recent years, that we won't tolerate aggression against Israel." Considered allies? Is that a declaration of separation? And in case Perry's blasts at Turkey and Egypt weren't enough, he threatened to cut off the United Nations: "America must make it clear that a declaration of Palestinian Statehood in violation of the spirit of the Oslo accords could jeopardize our funding of U.N. operations."

William Saletan - Alliance for Christ Slate 20 Sep 11

Holy f*ck.

Did you see the President's speech to the UN today? (2.00 / 9)
I saw some blurbs last night from Al Jazeera English that said his speech would continue the anti-American trend.

I would also like to see what the Palestinian statehood request looks like with regard to specificity.

Perry also met with conservative Jewish leaders before his speech yesterday.  I'm sure they all will be pushing the "Obama hates teh Jews" meme hard.

Obama... (2.00 / 9)
Is making at least a modicum of sense:

A frustrated Obama declared to U.N. members that "there are no shortcuts" to peace, and he implored Israelis and Palestinians to restart direct talks. His influence limited and his hopes for a peace deal long stymied, Obama didn't directly call on the Palestinians to drop their bid for recognition from the U.N. Security Council. But the U.S. threat to veto any such U.N. action loomed unmistakably.

"Peace will not come through statements and resolutions at the United Nations," Obama told delegates. "If it were that easy, it would have been accomplished by now."

Ben Feller and Tarek El-Tablawy - Obama Pressures Palestinians To End Bid AP via Huffington Post 21 Sep 11

It is a very difficult position, not helped by Perry's bombast whatsoever.  Sometimes I really weep for my home country.

Dear Chris,

I've been down here at death row, and we just heard the horrific news.

After a torturous delay of more than 4 hours, the state of Georgia has just killed Troy Anthony Davis.

My heart is heavy. I am sad and angry. The state of Georgia has proven what we already know. Governments cannot be trusted with the awful power over life and death.

Today, Georgia didn't just kill Troy Davis, they killed the faith and confidence that many Georgians, Americans and Troy Davis supporters worldwide used to have in our criminal justice system.

Wende, on our Abolish the Death Penalty Campaign team, met with Troy Davis yesterday to convey the support that he has had from all of you. He asked us to deliver this message back to you:

"The struggle for justice doesn't end with me. This struggle is for all the Troy Davises who came before me and all the ones who will come after me. I'm in good spirits and I'm prayerful and at peace."

Let's take a moment to honor the life of Troy Davis and Mark MacPhail. Then, let's take all of our difficult feelings and re-double our commitment to abolition of the death penalty.

Please pledge to continue this fight because it is far from over.

This Friday at 7 pm EST, please join us for a special call to discuss Troy Davis' case, what your work means for the death penalty abolition movement as a whole and what we can do next.

I am Troy Davis. You are Troy Davis. We will not stop fighting for justice.

Thank you for everything you have done to make your voice heard.

We Failed. (2.00 / 6)
But I see within myself the roots.

The man who dragged a man to death is going to be executed, and while I oppose the death penalty I feel no remorse for him.

For Davis, I do.

Our lust for vengeance is where civilization breaks down. Civilization is where we stay our hand in the first case - regardless of how we feel.

I understand the victim's mother in Davis' case - she thinks Davis killed her son - but the civilized response is not to kill a man in custody. Just because I would feel the same if I were her does not me that you all should let me kill.

I wish I knew more about this case. In the last few days I've heard both sides, and it doesn't smell right, but I don't really know the details.

All that is irrelevant on the moral plane, though: our anger does not justify captive killing.

John Askren - "Never get into a pissing match with a skunk."

Oh no I feel remorse for him (2.00 / 4)
It's not morally difficult for me, the state shouldn't be in the killing business period exclamation point.  Now outside the fact that it is applied with bias and injustice it is morally corrosive to a society to sanction killing then say don't kill.  The murderer of James Byrd should spend every day of his natural life locked up then a mother fucker then when he dies he can reckon up with the maker.

I am not happy with my emotions. (2.00 / 4)
I agree that decades of prison is a more severe punishment than a quick death, and at an intellectual level I would rather have Byrd's murderer rot in jail. But the hate and violence of that crime is such that the animal mind in my head revels in the bloody vengeance of seeing the murderer die.

I wish that were not true. It means I have to understand the animal mind in Mrs. MacPhail's own head. For those who truly believe that Troy Davis was guilty, who knew and loved the victim, that animal voice inside them must be much more untamed than my own regarding Byrd's murderer.

It is this animal inside all of us that we have to collar. That is the entire point of rising above our bestial past. To control the illiterate and frightened hindbrain inside us all.

Crazy UFO Dude gets news story that makes him cheer! FTL TRAVEL!!!!! (2.00 / 5)
GENEVA (AP) -- Scientists at the world's largest physics lab say they have clocked subatomic particles traveling faster than light, a feat that - if true - would break a fundamental pillar of science.

The readings have so astounded researchers that they are asking others to independently verify the measurements before claiming an actual discovery.

"This would be such a sensational discovery if it were true that one has to treat it extremely carefully," said John Ellis, a theoretical physicist at the European Organization for Nuclear Research, or CERN, who was not involved in the experiment.

Nothing is supposed to move faster than light, at least according to Albert Einstein's special theory of relativity: The famous E (equals) mc2 equation. That stands for energy equals mass times the speed of light squared.

But neutrinos - one of the strangest well-known particles in physics - have now been observed smashing past this cosmic speed barrier of 186,282 miles per second (299,792 kilometers).

Cuban: Paying Taxes 'The Most Patriotic Thing You Can Do'

There's another millionaire supporter of the so-called Buffett Tax. Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban came out in favor of President Obama's proposed deficit reduction plan on his blog, shooting down the argument that taxes are a disincentive for economic growth.

"So be Patriotic. Go out there and get rich," he writes. "Get so obnoxiously rich that when that tax bill comes, your first thought will be to choke on how big a check you have to write. Your 2nd thought will be 'what a great problem to have,' and your 3rd should be a recognition that in paying your taxes you are helping to support millions of Americans that are not as fortunate as you."
