Thanks Obama!

Edith Windsor reacts, and also thanks Obama. :)

Just after 11 A.M., the President called. Kaplan picked up the phone and gave it to Windsor. "Hello, who am I talking to?" Windsor said. "Oh, Barack Obama? I wanted to thank you. I think your coming out for us made such a difference throughout the country."

Fuck it, it's 5 o'clock somewhere. Cheers!!

Thank you, kirbybruno. (2.00 / 24)
There are probably those who will scream that he didn't do it soon enough to suit them.

To them I say "Pffffffbbbttttt".

Heh. (2.00 / 21)
You should see one of the comments in this same diary over at the GOS. One well-known individual is carping about that very thing.

Fortunately a lot of other folks are taking issue with that person.

There are, in every age, new errors to be rectified, and new prejudices to be opposed. ~Samuel Johnson (1709-1784)

You know what, Silks? (2.00 / 22)
It took black Americans about 80 years to be considered people, it took another 100 years for them to be guaranteed the right to vote (don't get me started on that ... today we celebrate). It took women about 130 years to be allowed to vote.

It took about 175 years before races could intermarry.

The first same-sex marriages took place in Massachusetts in 2004. I think that by most standards, 9 years is pretty damn quick.

Yep. (2.00 / 19)
Always good to keep the Big Picture present before us. Too many people have historical myopia.

Yes, dammit.... (2.00 / 18)
Where was Obama during Stonewall? How come he wasn't in the fight then?? He came in so late in the game he deserves no credit at all!

;-)

as silks confirmed, they're that predictable.

"well-known" (2.00 / 2)
Hmmmmmm....

You're welcome! (2.00 / 19)
Quick question, how to I embed a tweet? I forget what to remove from the code.

Shake it like a Polaroid picture.

Remove the last line ... the scripting won't work here. (2.00 / 17)

thanks!

well, in point of fact, (2.00 / 22)
it was Edward Snowden who hacked Kennedy's computer and the scotus vote to produce this result.

hahahaha! (2.00 / 19)

[ Parent ]
I *knew it*!!! (2.00 / 18)
It was to take the glare of publicity off himself, wasn't it?

One of the commenters in the SCOTUSblog had a username of "E. Snowden" and his comment (before the ruling) was "I already know the results."

[ Parent ]
Thanks kirby bruno! (2.00 / 19)
:-)

Just wanted to say thanks for posting up the thanks where there won't be spitting on the parade!

:-)

Thank you kishik! (2.00 / 19)
I feel sorry for people that cannot be happy when there is something very important to be happy about. How miserable that must be. What a great day this is, I love the tone it sets for the country!

I loved that video... (2.00 / 17)
Of the Prop 8 plaintiffs getting a call from the Prez.  One of them said, we know we still have to roll up our sleeves and get to work on the other 37 states....

We All have to get to work on things that are meaningful to us.  That is what President Obama has always said.   He can't wave some magic wand to make things happen.

[ Parent ]
The photos of people embracing and cheering are wonderful. We haven't had that much to cheer lately and (2.00 / 11)
this is just wonderful.

[ Parent ]
Great post kirbybruno, thank you (2.00 / 14)

An interesting thing about that POTUS to Windsor phone call is that (2.00 / 14)
POTUS was airborne on his way to South Africa at the time.  While I realize it was no hardship to make that call it is still kind of cool.

That is interesting! (2.00 / 13)
I think it is those little facts that are so telling about a person's nature and what is important to them.

Shake it like a Polaroid picture.

[ Parent ]
yes!!! (2.00 / 10)
I think I read that in the local rag here.  And I think POTUS will be trying to visit Nelson Mandela??  Hopefully to get there in time.

[ Parent ]
This means one less wedge issue for Republican GOTV. (2.00 / 14)
I remember how disheartening it was in 2004 when Republicans put anti-gay marriage referendums on their ballots in the general election in order to get their hating haters to the polls.

Now they are down to women's reproductive rights ... seeking to overturn Roe v Wade. If last year and last week is any indication, abortion is a political minefield for Republicans; every time they open their mouths more ignorant and insulting comments drop out.

Women will vote with their wombs if forced to defend their right to plan their families. Go for it, GOP.

Words have meaning. Our words will reflect what is in our souls.

omg - slightly off topic, but did you hear about the GOP Rep who (2.00 / 9)
wants to ban abortion because 15-week fetuses masturbate?  You can't make this shit up:

This is a subject I know something about ... Watch a sonogram of a 15-week baby, and they have movements that are purposeful. They stroke their face. If they're a male baby, they may have their hand between their legs.

Rep. Michael Burgess (R-Texas), who frighteningly enough is an OB/GYN!  Story at The Atlantic Wire

Exhibit 1 gajillion in "stupid things Republicans say about abortion" (2.00 / 9)
I thought it was only the men but then Rep. Clueless McBighair from the Texas House said that rape kits clean women out so they can't get pregnant.

Spoke too soon! (2.00 / 9)
GOP 2016 hopeful Chris Christie doubles down on discrimination.

Christie says court's ruling on DOMA "was wrong"

Christie, who last year vetoed a bill that would have legalized same-sex marriage in New Jersey, dodged questions about the court ruling earlier Wednesday, but was asked about it again later in the day during his monthly radio show.

He said the court ruling "was wrong," and added his opinion on the New Jersey legislation is unchanged.

Lawmakers may try to override the governor's rejection, or they could send him a new bill altogether. But that would draw the same response, Christie told NJ 101.5 FM host Eric Scott.

"I'll veto it," Christie said.

His position is that New Jersey voters should decide in a referendum if their fellow citizens should be granted civil rights. It was wrong when he first suggested that and it is doubly wrong now in light of the court's ruling.

Maybe some of those Dems who rushed to give Christie (2.00 / 9)
donations will ask for refunds.  Idiots.

i think even the LDS church (2.00 / 15)
is going to surrender on gay marriage.

this tweet is from my current rep:
oh he deleted it.

it was really nice.  dang it.

It was very good news today; a toast to everyone (2.00 / 11)
on the side of equality!

Heh (2.00 / 11)
When I saw "toast" in the title I thought it meant lightly browned bread.  :)

(I couldn't have my peanut butter toast this morning 'cause I ran out of bread.)

Not THAT kind of toast! (2.00 / 11)
Not that there is anything wrong with that.

[ Parent ]
:) (2.00 / 9)
Between the lack of my morning toast and that I don't drink I hope to be excused.

Of course, how you managed to do a piece on SSM and left out the sparkles is beyond me.

Prop 8 stay lifted Friday afternoon (2.00 / 2)
Stay lifted

With a simple sentence, the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has just lifted the stay on gay marriages in California, opening the way for same-sex weddings to begin immediately.

"The stay in the above matter is dissolved effective immediately,'' the ruling reads.
