BP has achieved a new goal: delivering oil to customers after drilling without the intervening hassle of processing and shipping.  The new "Direct to Consumer" approach is being tested on the residents of Pensacola, Florida, who can now scoop oil directly off the beach.

I'm fed up with the whole thing, how about you?

it's depressing. (2.00 / 8)
the whole damn thing just makes me sad. we'll be feeling the effects of this disaster for a very long time.  lately, this very sweet, very catchy song has been cheering me up:

In other news, I'm playing with the newly formed John Corncock and the Peckers as entertainment for a chicken themed art show in early August. We have to learn a whole bunch of 'chicken' songs in a hurry.  Any suggestions?

Turns out the bully pulpit isn't as fruitful as they thought.

No. That's Obama's fault too. Somehow. (2.00 / 8)

Judge might have oil in his portfolio. (2.00 / 7)
Interesting story in Mother Jones.

According to the most recently available financial disclosure form for US District Court Judge Martin Feldman, he had holdings of up to $15,000 in Transocean in 2008. He has also recently owned stock in offshore drilling or oilfield service providers Halliburton, Prospect Energy, Hercules Offshore, Parker Drilling Co., and ATP Oil & Gas. Feldman was appointed by President Ronald Reagan in 1983.

The story goes on to aknowledge that 2010 dislosure forms are not yet availible online.

also,

But in Louisiana it's hard to find a judge without ties to the industry. In the Gulf region, 37 of 64 federal judges have some ties to the oil sector.

Isn't it wonderful how our political and legal systems are so connected with real americans and there concerns.

And... I love Pensacola.

**sigh**

I've lived down here within hours of the Gulf my whole life -- we've been to plenty of beaches along the coast. The one I remember most fondly is Destin, FL, tourist trap though it unquestionably is... We still went pretty much every year of my life. And in fact, if we scrape together enough money to go on "vacation," we will go this year as well, just to support the area. If not to Destin, then to Panama City, which is closer to me currently.

And yet, despite my fondness for Florida beaches, I think what hit me hardest was learning that the spill had reached Dauphin Island here in AL. I've only been there once -- my AP biology class stayed there for several days when I was a senior. Just crushing to think of the oil reaching all of these wonderful, vibrant locations.

"I now am bold to say to the swift changing hours,
Pass, pass upon your way, for I grow never old,
Fleet to the dark abysm with all your fading flowers,
One rose that none may pluck, within my heart I hold."

My family is from the area for generations (back to the 1700s), (2.00 / 4)
(Marietta, FL).  I grew up running up and down that very same beach - it was the first sand and saltwater I ever saw.  I'd hate to see what St. George's Island looks like if Pensacola beach looks like that.

Rep. Sue Myrick (R-NC) presses DHS Secretary Napolitano for more surveillance of Hezbollah operations along the US Mexico border:

Former intelligence officials have suggested that Hezbollah has increased its presence in Central and South America, and are now operating in Mexico and on our southern border. Even more troubling is that I believe Hezbollah and the drug cartels may be operating as partners on our border.

snip

Former intelligence officials have pointed to the terrain that makes up our border, especially in the San Diego border sector, as a reason why drug cartels have been partnering with Hezbollah. This terrain is very much like the areas around Israel's borders. As we well know, Hezbollah is extremely skilled in the construction of tunnels. Israel has time and again found Hezbollah tunnels leading into Israel, some of which are large enough to accommodate trucks. Likewise, these intelligence officials say that the drug cartels, in an effort to dig larger and more effective tunnels, are employing the expertise of Hezbollah. For their expertise, Hezbollah could be receiving a cut of the drug money or even be helping put cash up front to assist in the overall drug operations.

Not to be outdone we have Rep. Gohmert:

But why wait until after you're elected to start pissing on your constituents:

Let there be no mistake, Lou Ann stands with everyone who is opposed to the idea of an Islamic training center being built in our community.  This "Islamic Center" is not part of a religious movement; it is a political movement designed to fracture the moral and political foundation of Middle Tennessee.

snip

Yes, we are tolerant, but our nation was founded on the tenets of the Judeo-Christian tradition; we have a right to defend that tradition.  Until the American Muslim community find it in their hearts to separate themselves from their evil, radical counterparts, to condemn those who want to destroy our civilization and will fight against them, we are not obligated to open our society to any of them.

snip

As Martin Luther King said, "in the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends," so let us not be silent.  Stand strong for our God, our families, and our country.  God bless you all.

Lou Ann Zelenik is campaigning for the GOP nomination in Tennessee's 6th congressional district. It has been held by 13 term Democrat Congressman Bart Gordon who announced his retirement late last year. Zelenik is a Murfreesboro businesswoman, former Chair of the Rutherford County GOP, and a leader in the Middle Tennessee Tea Party movement. She announce her candidacy last fall, and Gordon announced his retirement shortly afterwards.

Lou Ann has been endorsed by Joe the [not] Plumber, too.

BTW, the center was approved.

But let's not forget AZ Governor, Jan Brewer:

Brewer said the motivation of "a lot" of the illegal immigrants is to enter the United States to look for work, but that drug rings press them into duty as drug "mules."

"I believe today, under the circumstances that we're facing, that the majority of the illegal trespassers that are coming into the state of Arizona are under the direction and control of organized drug cartels and they are bringing drugs in," Brewer said.

The president on the union (!) that includes border agents disagrees:

T.J. Bonner, president of the union that represents border agents, said some illegal border-crossers carry drugs but most don't. People with drugs face much stiffer penalties for entering the U.S. illegally, and very few immigrants looking for work want to risk the consequences, Bonner said.

"The majority of people continue to come across in search of work, not to smuggle drugs," he said. "Most of the drug smuggling is done by people who intend to do that. That's their livelihood." http://www.huffingtonpost.com/...

It took a few days (2.00 / 1)
for the media to figure out how to knock Obama for firing McChrystal and hiring Petreaus. But the good news is they finally found a narrative.

Obama is "apologizing to Bush for opposing the Iraq surge"

DAVID BROOKS: [...] I thought nominating or appointing Petraeus was like an apology to George Bush and Dick Cheney, because it's an acknowledgement finally that Petraeus' strategy with the surge actually worked, which the administration is slow to acknowledge.

JUDY WOODRUFF: Which was something that Barack Obama had said-had been critical of.

DAVID BROOKS: Right. And, in private, I think they knew it worked. In public, they can't say it. But it clearly worked.

He's right that it worked in a fashion. (2.00 / 2)
I think he's also right that Obama won't and can't aknowledge that it worked. I would add that "worked" in this case is taking a over a conflict that had no strategy and imposing order, bring violence down to a more acceptable level. Thae fact that we shouldn't have been there at all is another discussion wich might relieve one of having to apologize to anyone but the dead.
Mr Brooks last op-ed lammented the change in our media from a "reticent ethos" to an "exposue ethos" in regards to General McCrhystal. I don't remember any objections during the Clinton Administration.

[ Parent ]
Well that's the other thing too (2.00 / 4)
Obama is, in a way, exonorated from apologizing or backtracking from Democratic opposition to strategy in Iraq because he never supported the war in the first place.

"Mr. President, by appointing General Petreaus to take over the mission in Afghanistan, aren't you admitting that the strategy General Petreaus commanded you opposed in Iraq was successfull?"

"The is an irrelevant question because it has always been my opinion that the only successfull strategy would have been the one where we never went to Iraq in the first place."

He has the unique ability to say that which no other potential Democratic President could.

[ Parent ]
Way back in 2008 I attended a meeting with Major General James L. Williams, (2.00 / 4)
Commanding General 4th Marine Division, who was in charge at the time of the surge.  While I think the surge in total was a good idea, it is incorrectly associated with the Al Anbar Awakening.  In a conversation with the general he told me:

"We didn't need surge troops in Al-Anbar, by then we were reducing forces there.  We needed those troops in Baghdad."

I'm sure David Brooks knows more about all that than General Williams though.  I'd pay money to see him debate the General on the topic...

However, I must be honest...I'm not so sure I have a problem with raising the retirement age.

It's the bone in the SS soup. (2.00 / 2)
When Soc. Security was setup, not a lot of people lived to or beyond retirement.  Now people have two or more active decades.  It really wasn't meant to fund a long vacation-style retirement, it was to keep old folks from being poor.

I have nothing against a fund we all pay into that allows for a long and relatively comfortable retirement for everyone past a given age, but we don't put enough into SS for that, and I doubt anyone is going to be happy finding out what the ding out of the paycheck would be to cover it.

Oh, and Sarah needs your money (again) for legal costs. (2.00 / 3)

Dear Friends,

Believe me, with friends like me you really don't need enemies.

Recently, some of Governor Palin's closest friends decided to put together a trust fund to help her pay the legal fees to rebut relentless, frivolous claims or lawsuits.

The Sarah Palin Legal Defense Fund helps Governor Palin defend herself and her family from these legal attacks against her by left-wing extremists.

This trust is established to help defray the costs of the massive legal fees incurred through these continued political attacks.
So please take a moment to visit http://SarahPalinLegalDefenseF... it is a great organization and cause!

Sincerely,

And the reason...? (2.00 / 2)
Why was the fund set up?
In 2009, friends of the Palin family set up a trust fund (the "Alaska Fund Trust") which collected donations to help with the legal costs associated with numerous politically motivated attacks against Sarah Palin while she was governor of Alaska. Because of specific laws exclusive to Alaska, Sarah Palin has agreed to pay back all of the money raised via this fund in arrangement with the Attorney General of Alaska. This fund ("The Sarah Palin Legal Defense Fund") has been set up to refund donations to the previous fund and to raise money for the significant legal fees associated with ongoing legal challenges faced by the Palin family.

In other words, the first fund was illegal, so the new fund will cover refunds to the old fund after Sarah had to recover the costs they covered plus the costs of all the legal fees associated with the last illegal fund.

Follow that?
