Greetings fellow Moose (and lurkers!). There have been several new additions to the herd in the past few weeks so I thought some 'insider moose tips' might be useful.

While most of what one needs to know of the Moose can be found in our Posting Guidelines, FAQ, and About pages, there are lots of 'quirks' of the Moose that are unwritten.

Follow me below the fold for an Insider's Guide to the Moose.

anonymoose :: Insider's Guide to Motley Moose
Photobucket

PhotobucketHere at the Moose, there really is no such thing as 'threadjacking'. Just about any thread on the Moose is a potential 'Open Thread' and no one is going to get fired up over a left field comment.

Photobucket

PhotobucketThere is no such thing as 'Jumping the Tip Jar' because we don't use Tip Jars. Our diarists may not even leave the top comment (though, if a diary has JUST been posted, it is courteous to wait a few minutes before commenting in case one is being written).

Photobucket

PhotobucketRatings on the Moose are more for fun and support than anything else. We do not tend to take them as seriously as other sites might. In the most general of terms, our ratings can be defined as:

Fierce = Anything from "Ayup" to "Oh, hell yeah!!"
Meh = "Meh"
Fail = "Oh, hell no!!" (obvious Trolls/beyond the pale language)

PhotobucketWe really are pretty laid back as a rule. As such, 'Fail' ratings are rare rare rare. If someone has 'Failed' a comment of yours, odds are it was in error (easy to do on a laptop when rating multiple comments).

Photobucket

PhotobucketThe Moose moves at a slower pace than most other sites. Rather than lasting a few hours, a conversation may last for days (and/or be carried over into multiple diaries).

Photobucket

PhotobucketThe Moose is an Anti-Flame Zone. Our interactions are more like dinner table discussion with family and friends, and best intentions and good faith should always be assumed. That having been said, everyone has a bad day now and again, we just tend to cut each other some slack when it happens.
Avoid this! Photobucket

PhotobucketTry not to drag drama and/or altercations from other sites over to the Moose.

PhotobucketPhotobucket

Odds are that the Moose it would interest are already aware of it...and those that aren't probably don't want to be aware of it in the first place.

PhotobucketWe try to avoid bashing other sites (the obvious exceptions to this rule would be Rightwing and/or Hate sites). We see no need to build a divide amongst those fighting for the same causes. In fact, most Moose are active across the blogosphere. For example, many Moose diary and comment regularly on dKos.
Photobucket

PhotobucketTo follow what we are up to on dKos, join and follow the Group Moose Tracks: Moose on the Loose. By looking at the profile for the Moose Group you can click on individual Moose and follow them as well.

Photobucket

PhotobucketMoose have pretty thick hides and many (if not most) comments have a healthy dose of snark in them. From a recent comment:

We are a pretty snarky and irreverent bunch...for the most part we adhere to the "we only tease ya cuz we love ya" mindset...some of us have been pokin' fun at each other for years now...just laugh and roll with it  ;)

PhotobucketThis is YOUR blog. Write about whatever you want to. While we are focused primarily on politics, we also love food diaries, horse diaries, poetry diaries, photo diaries, and funny clips. Music, books, travel, personal stories, and the occasional unicorn porn. Whatever you feel led to blog about is fair game on the Moose (so long as it abides by our Posting Guidelines!). Not only do we want you to join in on the conversation, we want you to start new ones!

Photobucket

PhotobucketWhile the Moose is indeed now YOUR blog, we understand that many keep personal blogs as well. 'Moose with Blogs' is a blog roll found in the right column that links to...you guessed it...blogs that belong to other Moose. If you have a personal blog that you would like added to the Moose Blog Roll, you can ask in any active thread (or use the 'Contact the Moose' link at the bottom of each page).

Photobucket

PhotobucketIf you are plugged into 'social media', Motley Moose has Twitter, Facebook, and Networked Blogs accounts. You can find links to all three in the far right column beneath the Moose with Blogs roll. Add us, Friend us, and Follow us!

Photobucket

PhotobucketIt is highly recommended that you download the browser add-on Lazarus. It is available for both Firefox and Chrome and it can be an absolute sanity saver. It prevents the loss of a diary draft or comment (on any site) in the case of an errant click, power outage, or balky computer (it also prevents the loss of forms and emails). Do yourself a favor and take the very brief time needed to add it.

Lazarus for Chrome

PhotobucketPut quite simply: Our 'Search' sucks. Try using the advanced options, then hit teh Googles.

Photobucket

PhotobucketYou will occasionally see a diary labeled 'The Lounge'. The Lounge was an early forum for all things silly during the building of the Moose. Our resident snarkmeisters reigned supreme and kept us all from getting too serious. We carried The Lounge over to Motley Moose in the form of snarky and/or free form diaries. A couple of examples:

The Lounge: Flashback-Gate and part deux

Zee Lounge: Evolution Edition

Feel free to use the 'The Lounge' as a subject header when you want to get your snark on.

Heh. I like the above t-shirt. It reminded me of these:

Sorry to start on a cantankerous note, but your first statement is demonstrably wrong:

Don't have a lot to say since I discovered I'm not as brilliant as I once thought I was, but do love to listen and learn and take an occasional turn with the talking stick.

I would posit that this is itself is a sign of wisdom, which no amount of brilliance can usurp. So you probably do have a lot to say, and will likely say it more concisely and precisely than verbose shiny lightbulbs like myself.

Brilliance is a great thing, for what it is, but it does not equate with being correct more than Wisdom.

Welcome to the Moose!

Early adopter, had all the variants, hate them like spinach.

Can't dim the damn things. Without dimmers life is like living in a slow binary strobe. Bring the damn LED lights, they are easier to deal with environmentally, use less power and suck less.

The problem with the compact fluorescent issue is that it is last year's tech. Legislating at the fine a granularity truly is one of the pitfalls of Lefthanded approaches.

There should be a more loose way to encourage energy efficiency in lighting than specifying a technology. Legislation and technology move at too different a pace.

John Askren - "Never get into a pissing match with a skunk."

[ Parent ]
Typical fact-challenged rightie (2.00 / 9)
(Sorry, Chris. Couldn't resist.)

There are cfls that work with dimmers. I discovered regular cfls didn't work in dimmers the hard way back in 2007. I asked an electrician at work about it and he pointed me towards the right ones to use in dimmers.

The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 sets energy efficiency standards. It says nothing about the technology that should be used to meet those standards. It was industry that chose to use cfls to meet those standards.

This is not a recession. It's a robbery.

so I'm going to come close to breaking a rule here... (2.00 / 15)
A certain site had a diary last night wondering why we couldn't talk about primarying the president (from the Left).  The question really was "with whom should we...?" because any attempt to tell the diarist it was a stupid idea was met largely with insults.  The list of potential opponents actually answered the question:   Grayson, Feingold, Robt. Kennedy, warren, Dean, Whitehouse, Reed, Sanders (more on him in a minute), and Gore.

It seems Bernie Sanders told a NY media outlet that primarying the president would "enliven" things.  I shot off an email to my junior senator which certainly contained an element of wtf?!  We don't need to waste resources on such a futile notion.  We'd be better served working to get a better Congress.

"When Fascism comes to America, it will come wrapped in teh stupid and waving a gun" ~ Esteev on Wonkette

Nah... (2.00 / 14)
there is no hard and fast rule...it is more a matter of 'tone' (and intent). And your tone is just fine.  /grin

Was quite the spectacle last night...but, I think the whole of it was pretty needless. No one is going to Primary Obama. As such, there is no need to square off and take sides over the prospect of it.

Because with the temperature the way it is over there these days...you can't say "Hmmm, it might be a good idea to primary Obama, I can see some positives to it" without being called an Obama hating Firebagging Republican plant...and you can't say "No, that is pretty far-fetched, no one will primary him and it would likely cause more harm than good if they did" without being called a mindless Obamabot fan boy paid shill.

Why bother entering such a hypothetical conversation...from either side? Where is there positive gain...for either side?

Is kinda like squaring up and taking sides (and getting feelings hurt) over whether or not you would vote for the Democrat for President if Jane Hamsher were the candidate. I'm sure such a convo would set quite a few fiery conversations off. Buy why bother? It will never happen, it is not worth getting emotionally involved in. The only reason to engage in such banter is the joy of flame wars.

As far as Sanders goes....I think he was just getting himself some attention and possible face time...I don't hold it against him. He has zero intention of running against Obama.

Sincerely,

a mindless Obamabot fan boy paid (shhhhhhh!!!) shill

(/eyeroll...I feel the need to point out that the above is a joke...don't want it rocketing around that I am a PAID SHILL..OH TEH HORRORZ!!)

I don't think there's a rule about not mentioning other sites (2.00 / 11)
....we mention them all the time. The problematic one was been the biggest liberal blog, DKos, mainly because all kinds of outside comments are dragged into the pie fights there.

But as the biggest liberal blog - and one a large number of Moosers also cross post at (including new front pager Denise Velez) we can't really ignore it as indicative of the state of the left blogosphere.

The primarying thing is a fascinating example of the echo chamber effect. Choosing sides on that particular non-issue has very little relevance to any real political choice, but everything to do with the tribal loyalties of a few thousand people.

The internal politics of blogs often blind people to the real politics of the wider world.

Problem is that sometimes the distorted perspective sometimes seeps out. It can discourage committed dems, and give fuel to opponents who want to divide and destroy. Indeed, it's surely got to be a republican tactic, after Operation Chaos in 2008, to sow division this way.

The lets primary the President from the left (2.00 / 9)
line of thinking is a head scratcher. First there is this belief and I have no idea where it came from that if we primary Obama from the left he will be forced to move to the left. OH REALLY? How the hell does that work?

The challenger would occupy a space to Obama's left. So Obama cannot occupy the same space he must either stay right where he is or move further left than his challenger. Moving further left will reinforce the socialist meme. Next, should he come out of the primary unscathed he now has a very difficult time traveling the distance between the staked out position during the primary back towards the center in order to win the general. In the end he loses the general and the progressives will once again have hand in giving the WH back to the Republicans.

" In the choice between changing ones mind and proving there's no need to do so, most people get busy on the proof. "

[ Parent ]
apparently there is an element of "blow the place up" in primarying Obama (2.00 / 8)
because if he fails to move to the Left and he loses the GE then 1) there's no difference between the two parties so who cares and 2) once the Republican president completely destroys the country folks will be flocking to a "true" Democratic president.

Unfortunately, we don't know what's going on.  I cannot bring myself to believe the president or vice president is willing to do more than tweak entitlements with little benefit shifts.  The president knows that's a truly horrible thing to do morally and electorally.  Also, as has been pointed out, Congressional Dems have been quite silent on the issue beyond that original "oh hell you won't" when WaPo first broke the story.

Either way, how I long for the days of politically calm summers.  :)

When I look at what Obama started his presidency (66+ / 0-)

with:  a looming depression, 2 unfunded wars, a tea party radical republican party that considered him an illegitimate president and on and on... I am more than willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. Sure I would like the country to go as far to the left as possible but I am willing to take the baby steps necessary to get there at a slower pace. What I can't stomach are the democrats who let us down in 2010 by staying home. A lot of this outrage could have been avoided if we hadn't handed over our state legislative government as well as congress to teaparty crazies and Koch brother puppets. Where does anyone think we would be right now with President McCain not to mention VP Palin?  Obama is not going to be primaried so get over that idea. Let's get back to work ourselves and take back our state governments and get Obama a congress he can work with.

IIRC (2.00 / 8)
dem turnout for the 2010 mids was on par with the average. the GOP win wave was fueled by their far above normal turn out coupled with a swing of senior independents (still thinking 'obamacare' would kill them somehow).

since then, the GOP has used the 2010 'mandate' to overreach just about everywhere, on everything, and have continued to block everything (including job creating legislation). that's the kind of fuckery people notice, especially when times are tough.

obama's 'only adult in the room' posture is hard for many on the left to take -- not yelly enough -- but it's showing signs of bearing electoral fruit:

A new Washington Post/Pew Research Center poll shows that the percentage of Americans concerned about the consequences of not raising the debt limit has gone up since May. The figure for those more concerned that increasing the debt limit will lead to more spending and bigger debt has held steady.

[snip]

Among independent voters, the numbers are also encouraging for Mr. Obama's position. In May, 34 percent were more concerned about default than about the potential consequences of raising the debt ceiling. In July, that number is up 11 points to 45 percent. Obama won a majority of independents in 2008, and he's fighting to win them back in time for the 2012 election.

At his press conference Monday, Obama sought to portray himself as a pragmatist and a centrist - a posture that seemed aimed at independent voters who reject Washington's high partisanship.

more on 'the only adult in the room' meme: (2.00 / 9)
the view from across the pond (Guardian):

Barack Obama is now engaged in near-permanent talks with congressional leaders, with all other concerns shunted aside. On Tuesday he called Democratic and Republican leaders to the White House to continue where they had broken off the day before, but both sides remain stubbornly resistant to compromise - a sign of the increasingly partisan nature of US politics.

At a time when bridge-building between the parties is crucial, the Republican leadership chose to take the opposite path.

Camp Berryessa to be Developed Under a Long-term Agreement Between Reclamation and Napa County

The Bureau of Reclamation and the Napa County Regional Park and Open Space District (District) have signed a long-term, 25-year agreement for the development, management, operation, and maintenance of Camp Berryessa along the shore of Putah Creek on Lake Berryessa.

Under the agreement, the District will facilitate and support outdoor recreation and environmental education, research and restoration by serving students, youth groups and non-profit organizations. The management agreement is consistent with the 2006 Record of Decision for the Lake Berryessa's Visitor Service Plan.

Camp Berryessa will be the first and only public outdoor environmental education camp in Napa County and is planned to be a living demonstration in sustainable design and operations. The District plans to start construction next spring and is anticipating having the area open in 2013.

The District has recently obtained a $1.5 million grant from the Coastal Conservancy. The grant will enable the District to construct the first phase of the camp, which will include approximately 30 tent cabins, campfire amphitheater, swimming area, opportunities for canoes and kayaks, nature trails, and numerous other activity areas. Once the basic camp is up and operating, the District will seek funding to add a central dining and meeting facility.

This outdoor education camp complements President Barack Obama's "America's Great Outdoors" (AGO) initiative
http://americasgreatoutdoors.g... AGO is a grassroots approach to protecting our nation's lands and waters while connecting Americans to our natural and cultural heritage.

Camp Berryessa is a former Boy Scout Camp on Lake Berryessa, located approximately 30 miles northeast of Napa. Lake Berryessa provides water for irrigation and urban purposes plus serves as a major recreation destination serving the San Francisco Bay Area and the Sacramento Valley. The lake provides opportunities for boating and water sports, camping, fishing, hiking, and other activities.

Since pulling the plug on the deal, Boehner has been largely silent in the meetings, leaving House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) to present details of the House's position. On Tuesday, people in both parties said, Obama tried to reestablish Boehner's primacy.

Cantor, who is advocating a smaller deal, at one point demanded that Obama offer the details of his vision for a "grand bargain."

"Where's your paper?" he asked angrily.

Obama snapped back: "Frankly, your speaker has it.  Am I dealing with him, or am I dealing with you?"
