A Mini Field Report

Today we had a special election in the Hillsborough 3rd District to replace a Republican NH House rep elected during the 2010 wave. He didn't know once elected he had to actually show up for work . . . go figure.

Peter Leishman was the Democratic candidate who had served 5 pervious terms in the House. Peter was running against one David Simpson who had massive support from both the state and national Party. In fact both Romney and Perry motivated volunteers to come out for him. I am going to estimate Peter was out spent by a factor of 10 if not higher.

At the beginning of September OFA cut me loose from my day to day stuff to focus on this election and to work with Peter to help get a win for our side. We also wanted continue a trend. Since the 2010 election there have been three specials two of which we have won big and one we lost to a pro-union moderate Republican in a three way. In this last election Speaker of the House's candidate got trounced. In other words the Republican that won was not the choice of the Republican leaders in Concord. So we sort of won by default.

So after Democratic pounded the phones, pounded the pavement the election results are in.

Town          Simpson-R    Leishman-D   Simpson-R   Leishman-D
------------ ------------ ------------ ------------ ----
Peterborough     358          915                    28%          72%
Sharon               27           68                     28%          72%
New Ipswich      369          160                    70%          30%
Greenville          70          117                     37%          63%
------------ ------------ ------------ ------------ ----
Total               824         1260                    40%          60%

BA BOOOM! A complete and utter defeat of the Republicans!

To say I am feeling a little full of myself tonight would be an understatement :)

You deserve it.

It's a different world than 2008, the OBA engine has a completely different kind of task(s). Thanks for letting us (lurkers alike) know what is going on and for rattling our cages.

my big one was 2004, when my candidate unseated a some 30 year veteran from the Texas House of Representatives.  I did some time here and there, then took two weeks off work directly before election day to work that campaign.

I went to bed on election night, knowing that Kerry had lost, and woke up the next morning to the news that Hubert had won by something like 16 votes.  The election was challenged and went to a trial, or whatever the process is, and in the end it was something like 10 votes - he still won.

This was the first Dem pickup in some years, and he's the first Vietnamese person elected to the house.  And a superlative public servant; unfortunately, I think he's just been redistricted to lower his chances of winning again.

These are the campaigns that let you know you really can make a difference.
