FiveThirtyEight projected Mr. Gingrich to win 39 percent of the vote; he got 40 percent. Mr. Romney, whom we projected to get 29 percent, got 28 percent. We were slightly low on Rick Santorum, who got 17 percent rather than his projection of 14 percent, and slightly high on Ron Paul, who got 13 percent rather than 17 percent.

Overall, I'd consider this a pretty fortunate performance for the model, given how volatile the polling was.

I wonder what SHAUN thinks will happen now. (2.00 / 8)
Paul is skipping Florida to focus on the caucus states. Mittens has the edge do to early voting and he will dominate the airwaves too. Will the GOP nominate a guy (Gingrich) who is 2 points behind Obama in Texas? TEXAS?!?!?  Mittens now calls it a marathon while he thought he was going to run a sprint.

However this plays out it's going to be a crazy ride.

Pass the popcorn.

No kidding (2.00 / 5)
We need a double-fierce button for it.

If it were done when 'tis done, then 'twere well it were done subjunctively.

This is not a recession. It's a robbery.

Heh (2.00 / 7)
Thanks, guys.  You knew I couldn't resist this campaign for long and it is just getting better and better.  I posted a few comments over at DailyKos yesterday and realised it just made me feel cheap and sad.  Thanks for the welcome back.  Nice to be here again.  Where's Happy in VT these days?

You're back. Thank goodness... (2.00 / 7)
...already read your take on Newt. Fascinating stuff. Tea Party insurgency moves to a Wallace from the Right - who attacks crony capitalism.

What fun US politics is this year. Now it's their primary war.

Happy is around. I'm sure she'll be even more present when she sees your diary.

As you can see, many the Moose needed you back. Has your back.
And now has you back

Thanks... (2.00 / 6)
For your persistent entreaties and good will.  It had to happen.  Sorry we missed Iowa, that was a honk too.  But this is as rich as it gets.

What's another word for populist "left" that isn't left?  Working-class but sort of reactionary.  Lumpen?  Prole?  I have an awkward sentence in that diary I just can't seem to fix.

[ Parent ]
I think populist demagogue gets it just right (2.00 / 6)
I that public approval and agitation is the priority, and ideological consistency or analysis takes a big back seat.

But maybe Newt needs a whole new post NEWTonian vocabulary.

I have to make a confession. Of all the candidates, he's the only one I really want to hear speak. I despise nearly everything he stands for, but he's a wily, smart dog-fighter. His response to the CNN open marriage question was a master stroke of invective and fake outrage. He must have known it was coming. He probably asked John King to ask that question

Apparently... (2.00 / 6)
He has a fairly personable and cordial relationship with his embedded press; chats with them a bit and remembers their birthdays.  He's a wily operative and understands politics just fine.  The thought of him as the Republican nominee, though, is a bit daunting; he's clearly a disturbance in the force.

The best I could come up with for the brand of populist entitlement I can see him endorsing is "working-class sozialismus of the trucknutzlumpen."  It's awkward but we tend to forget the reactionary socialists; like the Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei, for example.

[ Parent ]
Reactionary socialists is a good call (2.00 / 5)
Let's see if we can find a english version of the fantastic 'trucknutzlumpen'

Well (2.00 / 6)
There's always "lumpenproletariat".  I've seen that often enough before.

If it were done when 'tis done, then 'twere well it were done subjunctively.

so freakinunbelievablyhappy to have you back, sir. (2.00 / 6)
You have been sorely missed.  In my particular case, the political IQ has endured an average weekly loss of three points in your absence.  It's an election year Mate, I'm lost without you!
