Hello? Is this microphone on????

I am looking for a web site that is interested in electing more and better Democrats.

Your banner says "progress through politics" (electoral politics, I assume) and has a link to whitehouse.gov.

That looks very promising. :)

Lurking about, mostly. (2.00 / 14)
It's gets quiet here periodically.  Sometimes, you'll show up and the treehouse is empty.  Othertimes, you'll pop into the middle of a barn-burning party.  In between, the conversations here are typically very thoughtful and deliberate, spanning months.  It's not unusual for a single comment* to eclipse the length (and substance) of an average GOS diary.

*unless they're from me, in which case, expect funny pictures and excessive swearing.

Hey (2.00 / 14)
Things have been a bit quiet here since the election - a little bit of a sense of 'job done'.

But of course, as I wrote on DKos, we're back to traffic inducing rox-sux wars. It's 2009 all over again: same participants (largely) only repeating itself like The Hobbit at inordinate length and with no narrative tension. We know how the movie ends.

Now you're all back engaged I will make sure to return to the Moose more regularly. My favourite peeps posting here, so only fun and information to be had.

Some of us were heavily involved in the GOTV and voter enthusiasm. Less than 10 hours after Obama was declared the winner, the creep crawlies slithered out from under their rocks and started the rox-sux wars again. Sigh.

You don't mind if I write a post or two, do you? I have been itching to write but I needed to find a place where Democrats who promote electing Democrats aren't called Third Wayists.

Better and more sane politicians (2.00 / 14)
I'm not a Democrat- I used to be a Republican. But sane and Republican are rarely, if ever, synonymous any longer. So. Works for me, I suppose.

how the heck are ya, rage? (2.00 / 12)
how the little one?

Earth is the best vacation place for advanced clowns. --Gary Busey

[ Parent ]
I seriously considered (2.00 / 10)
voting Republican in my state Senate race this year. The candidate was liberal, supported assault weapons bans, supported high minimum wages and higher taxes on the rich (albeit with some spending cuts).

In the end I didn't, my main reason was he pandered too much to the Orthodox Jews and defended them on this.

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05...

But if more GOP candidates can be like him on other issues (i.e. gun control, civil rights, the budget), we'd be in a better place.

PS- the party primaried him because they found him to be too liberal.

[ Parent ]
The GOP is still in its death spiral, (2.00 / 6)
but I like to think I see signs of leveling off. I would like to see a GOP president in 2024 (I would like to say 2020, but I prefer two-term pres' and the GOP is just not going to be healed by 2016). Demographic realities and continued ritual failure will lead them in the right direction someday.

I hope so, we need a two-party system.

John Askren - "Never get into a pissing match with a skunk."

[ Parent ]
Ideally, I would like to see true coalition politics. (2.00 / 7)
I think we'd do better.  Personally, I tend towards Green principles, but compromise and vote for the most progressive Democrat I can find.

But I am all for seeing a return of sane Republicans, the Eisenhower type.  The rise of the Teapublican has been bad for the country and for political discourse overall.

I don't understand why the political etiquette of "disagree, but don't be disagreeable" got jettisoned.  Politics is not a purity game, it is always, always about compromise and pragmatism.  Sometimes the deals stink.  Sometimes the deals are surprisingly good.  But entrenched positions will get us nowhere but stuck in the muck.

Fabulous stuff. (2.00 / 10)
I am headed to the SHA meetings next week. I did some lab work on the animal bones from the Early Bronze Age site of Shengavit in Armenia last summer. I am not going to Egypt this year. That's just as well given the political situation. Our crew is still waiting for their permit, so I am glad I am not there. I will be back in Hawaii for about 3 weeks in May, and then Doug and I hope to be in Turkey in July. We will be working on some faunal material from a Late bronze and Early Iron Age site.

Other than than, I taught a heavy course load this fall--both our big undergraduate introduction to archaeology and zooarchaeology for the MA and PhD students.

The fate of both of our countries is to a certain extent determined by American politics, but we don't get to vote. That sucks. How's that for a royalist project.

There is another alternative... (2.00 / 9)
You could always seek admission to the Union, although that would require giving up the monarchy because every state is guaranteed a republican government (but thankfully not a Republican government).

Glad to see you made it, SallyCat! (2.00 / 10)
Just take a gander at the About if you are want a glimpse of rational:
In separating ourselves from the political blog herd, we set out to build a new place to gather that had clear lines of moderation, fostered a strong community, promoted reasoned discourse and well-researched diaries, and included a healthy dose of snark and dry wit.  While we trend to the Left, we are focused on political pragmatism because we believe that without a dialogue from across the political spectrum, we'll never be able to move forward, beyond partisanship and rhetoric, and make progress on the challenges we face.  We have built a strong community on which the success of the blog rests, and we believe that one blog and one blogger can make a difference in the world.

And one of the rules:

It is emphatically not acceptable to try to negatively dissuade other members from voting for the Democratic candidate.

Words have meaning. Our words will reflect what is in our souls.

[ Parent ]
Damn, people read that! (2.00 / 8)
The purpose of the Moose is pragmatism. Purple-trending-blue pragmatism, but pragmatism notwithstanding.

Ponies make lovely Christmas presents, but waiting for them is a non-fulfilling prophesy.

America - and indeed most of the world - is some shade of centrist. The "far" ideologies are intellectual exercises (some would say "mental masturbation", but we try to be more understanding than that), not to be confused with anything that might keep you from being eaten by a bear. The Moose tries to be a place that lives in the real world, where ponies are lovely but being eaten by bears is a more often immediate concern.

John Askren - "Never get into a pissing match with a skunk."

[ Parent ]
I live, literally, in the land of far left progressives (2.00 / 8)
We have groups that start with a great idea, maybe 25 or so people, then they get made that some aren't progressive enough and within a year they are split into multiple small groups with no effectiveness. Luckily our local Dem Central Committee is now made up of Deaniacs. Took 2 election cycles to replace the crazies and the DINOs but lots gets done now.

Am I happy with centrist pragmatism...not really. But life needs compromise and negotiations.  We need to find common ground with those in the middle that have ideas on both sides of center.

Glad to be here!

"It is what it is" is a phrase I have been picked on for using, most of my adult life.

But it is, so we always start from there.

And definitive ideologies? Where we know the outcome of decisions in complex environments before they are acted out?

Really?

I have opinions - many of them very strong and often enough bloody-mindedly clung onto - but I don't know what will happen with more/less of a given action/policy/way of life. Not one to advocate sitting on fences, either, I am happy to encourage others to go out and try whatever they feel strongly about (it almost always leads to learning things we were not expecting). That parenthetical bit, there, is the point.

We have sooo many 1960's Berkeley people living here it is scary on occasion! Fairfax...oh my...won't go there!

This year we had Jared Huffman running for Congress and he was considered a moderate for us. Anywhere else in the country (excluding Santa Cruz and Berkeley) he would be far left liberal.

Everyone I know is an activist of some sort. Be it for the environment, social change, human rights...everyone is active. It is the best part of here. People talking to each other, even our few Republicans, to make things happen. A lot of us swallow hard and vote for things we don't like totally but that is life.

Our opponents are not fixed and immutable. (2.00 / 8)
Some people changed because they saw that their positions were ridiculous. Those who understand the slightest thing about mathematics realized that having fewer Democrats because you chose purity over pragmatism will not leapfrog you into a majority status. Case in point: Darcy Burner could never win WA-01 because it was too red for a left-of-left politician. The primary winner, Suzan DelBene, won the general because she was more moderate. She will be a reliable Democratic vote for 99% of our issues. Her Republican teaparty challenger would have been a reliable vote for 0% of our issues.

As far as those who disagree with that, certainly the shriekers, while quite noisy, are numerically smaller than they were. Unfortunately they are very prominent, having been elevated to a special status so their influence has increased.

I got my ratings back after 2 months. I am on my best behaviour now. ;)

Darcy has burned her bridges in Washington (2.00 / 5)
While a superstar at DK Netroots, she twice lost to Dave Reichert in the purple 8th district. She was way too left for the (my) district and utterly failed to connect with the "common" voters here.

Then, in the WA-01 primary, she broke a pledge to not go negative. But let the PI explain in Darcy Burner flip-flops, goes furiously negative

With signs she is falling behind, 1st District U.S. House candidate Darcy Burner has reversed a campaign pledge and gone furiously negative in an attack mailing directed at fellow Democrat Suzan DelBene.

The attack mailing, sent out five days before the Aug. 7 primary, is in the tradition of political hit pieces designed to land on doorsteps at the last minute.   "What is she hiding?" it asks of DelBene, and likens "multimillionaire Suzan DelBene" to  "multimillionaire Mitt Romney."

...

Burner became a hero to liberal "NetRoots" Democratic activists across the country during her 2006 and 2008 campaigns against Reichert.  A majority of her contributors in the 2012 campaign come from out of state.

Burner has been relentlessly boosted by the Berkeley, Calif.-based dailykos.com web site.  She has touted her Afghanistan peace plan at a conference in Berlin, appeared on a panel with Occupy leaders at a New York forum, and was given a marquee speaking slot at the national NetRoots Nation conference last June in Providence, R.I.
