The Lounge: A Noob's First Take on the Moose

As a newcomer who is an inveterate animal-lover, I felt it would behoove me to become better acquainted with the totem of my new, purple
homeland: the moose (Alces alces). So I asked a lot of questions and came up with many delightful answers...
ursoklevar :: The Lounge: A Noob's First Take on the Moose
Where do moose come from? Why, they are made at the Moose Factory in Ontario, Canada.
Photobucket
Should you wish to go there, helpful information about lodging, weather, etc., can be found at this Moose Factory Island link: http://travelingluck.com/North...

Who leads the moose? Ceiling Moose is the leader of all moose.
Photobucket
That explains the guiding principle of the moose, which is

Be excellent to each other... or else.

Ceiling Moose is assisted by certain administrators who are invariably warm, welcoming, and good-natured, even when faced with a sudden, massive influx of immigrants.
Photobucket

Do moose interact well with other species? Not only yes, but HELL yes...
Photobucket
Photobucket
...although it is my impression that this is sometimes taken to extremes.
Photobucket

Are there peculiar customs one should understand before entering moosedom? A complete answer to that question is beyond the scope of my present research, but a few characteristic behaviors come to mind.
There is of course booping...
Photobucket
...and yoga...
Photobucket

Moosies lurv dem some water,
Photobucket
and talking politics in civilized tones is to them a BFD.
Photobucket

The headgear is simply beyond my understanding,
Photobucket
but it's clear that misguided attempts at imitation may prove awkward.
Photobucket

Are moose often featured in the performing arts? Sadly, no. All I could find was a short ballet called "Moves Like Jagger"
Photobucket
and an all-too-brief mention in the operetta "Bohemian Rhapsody" ("Scare a moose, scare a moose! Will you do the damn tango!?").

I hope that other new moosefolk will add further salient points, and that eldermoose will correct anything I have gotten wildly wrong (HAHAHA). H/T to http://icanhascheezburger.com/, where I found these images, which for all I know were created by Motley Moose members.

About Me
"He who bloweth not his own kazoo, for him his kazoo shall not be blown."

I am urso, teh small and meek, a well-preserved woman living in Denver near family. I share my home with three rescue dachshunds: Morgan, Emma, and Peanut. Pre-retirement, I spent 30 years serving as executive administrator for nonprofit biomedical research organizations in the fields of neuroscience and genetics. I have a Masters degree in English literature and am a voracious reader.

Although I always voted a straight Democratic ticket, it took the run-up to the 2008 election to lure me into becoming a better educated and more vocal voter. That's when I joined DailyKos, for which I have written block party diaries for the Gulf Watchers community and whimsical guides for the Pootie/Woozle/Birdies folks. For examples of my ouevre, see the diary on a cappella music from the medieval to the present ( http://www.dailykos.com/story/... ), and the PWB guide to the Higgs Boson ( http://www.dailykos.com/story/... ). It is wonderful to number myself among the mooq now!

thanks for the delightful lesson (2.00 / 53)
on...ahem...moose culture. Pleased to meet mooq you.

Thanks, raina! (2.00 / 41)
I forgot to hit the reload doodad, so I thought this had fallen from the virtual press with a resounding thud. Gott sei dank I was rong!

[ Parent ]
Takes some getting used to ... (2.00 / 34)
You will forget you ever had Auto-Refresh in about a week.

Words have meaning. Our words will reflect what is in our souls.

[ Parent ]
As you can imagine (2.00 / 35)
I've seen some of those pictures before in four years of Moosing.

But never so brilliant put together and storified. Captions. Animations. Moose soccer. Oh my!

And I have to correct a misapprehension. I misremembered Aji's native American word for Moose as Mooq. If you look in the Urban dictionary, that's something quite else (as Kysen has kindly pointed out to my embarassment).

It should be MOOZ.

Red faces all around.

Kysen kindly fixed all my diaries. (2.00 / 31)
Thank goodness no one ran out and had t-shirts made!!

Words have meaning. Our words will reflect what is in our souls.

[ Parent ]
I was trying to figure out how to let you know in a subtle fashion. (2.00 / 28)
Peter opted to just let it out there.  Funny thing, though.  :)

[ Parent ]
Yes! I am a word-inventor from way back but that one was not mine! (2.00 / 21)
I guess unless there is a late night flurry of odd looking signups, there was no harm done. ;)

Words have meaning. Our words will reflect what is in our souls.

[ Parent ]
OTOH, there's nothing that says Urban Dictioinary cannot be (2.00 / 20)
updated to reflect a new, relevant purple moose meaning.

[ Parent ]
Someone once came in to a pootie diary (2.00 / 9)
to explain to us the Urban Dictionary meaning of the word 'pootie'. We simply went back to the dictionary and added new meanings.

no harm done you say.... (2.00 / 5)

[ Parent ]
::Ahem:: cough:: cough:: (2.00 / 31)
This certainly lends new meaning to my closing statement that
It is wonderful to number myself among the mooq now!
Didn't know I could be so frisky.

In the absence of compelling argument to the contrary, I am going to let that sentence stand, hee hee hee.

Kind of like the difference between pooty and pootie, no?

[ Parent ]
There's a reload button? Yikes, do I (2.00 / 22)
have one too?

[ Parent ]
Is that a technical question (2.00 / 21)
or an anatomical question?

[ Parent ]
There's a difference??? ;) eom (2.00 / 21)

[ Parent ]
This (2.00 / 41)
is incredibly cool.

Ha, he wishes he could be that clever. Although I sort of think the moose has a lower annual income level.

Jagger gets a lot of credit in my book (2.00 / 32)
for not using a walker in his performances yet.

And I tell ya, those mooq are doing a lot of downward-facing something to get all that greenery on their heads.

[ Parent ]
Wonderful! (2.00 / 39)
And yes, this - and an all-too-brief mention in the operetta "Bohemian Rhapsody" ("Scare a moose, scare a moose! Will you do the damn tango!?").

- resulted in much mirth and unfortunately an ear worm.

I'll never be able to listen to Bohemian Rhapsody the same way again. :)

Bo Rap has a special place in my heart (2.00 / 31)
I knew a lot of Queen songs, including this, without really knowing they were Queen productions. When belinda ridgewood was here visiting, I asked her who wrote Bo Rap, and when she told me Queen, I decided to do some research. A hundred YouTubes and one biography later, I'm a huge fan.

[ Parent ]

As is this diary, by the way. Love it! Especially our Veep-as-Moose. Who knew?

[ Parent ]
If I could go back in time (2.00 / 21)
and could see only one Queen concert, it would be Wembley, 1985. Check out the YouTube vids.

[ Parent ]
Have watched 'em. Many times. (2.00 / 21)
Oh, to have been there. Freddie Mercury was one of the greatest entertainers ever to grace this planet, or any other, with his presence. May he rest in peace.

Ho'oponopono. To make things right; restore harmony; heal.

This might be a good time to share my previously favorite moose site, (2.00 / 37)
the Kostroma Moose farm. It is a charming Russian site (don't miss the section on milking moose and using moose milk for therapy).

::waves!::

I'm on my way! Thanks for the tip. (2.00 / 29)
Hopeful that what I find there will obliterate my first impression of the name, which is about mid-way between colostomy and sarcoma. Ewwww.

[ Parent ]
LOL, sounds like it has something to do with (2.00 / 2)

Thank goodness it was unsweetened so it's not terribly sticky.

That was funny, in addition to the delight of urso's moosey compilation. I need those laughs today!

[ Parent ]
Love this! (2.00 / 32)
Wonder if they give tours at Moose Factory. ;)

The Blue Moose Opera also (2.00 / 29)
sounds like fun, like almost everything by Daniel Pinkwater. Anyone had the chance to see it?

THAT is fiercely funny! (2.00 / 30)

Great stuff, urso!! (2.00 / 31)

My God, look how young our President is in that photo, and already his heart was in the right place.

I don't speak ASL. What are the letters in the Biden picture? I poked around the interwebz. Even though I'm too impatient to keep at it until I find the answer, I did locate this absolute gem. It's Cee Lo's "Fuck You" done in ASL by a young lady in Alabama for her final in her sign language course. Outstanding!

[ Parent ]
We keep seeing "Watch for Moose" signs driving (2.00 / 21)
through Maine, but have never seen an actual moose there.

Hubby says signs are false advertising, that all the moose are in Alaska eating underwear...

(Seriously, a friend of mine in Alaska says moose will eat your underwear off the clothesline. It has happened to her. She took pictures.) ;-D

[ Parent ]
I thought moose were vegetarians. (2.00 / 18)
If I might be so bold, what are your friend's undies made of? I guess if they're 100% cotton, or maybe hemp, they would qualify. Am I getting too personal?

[ Parent ]
She's cotton, all the way, like me. (2.00 / 19)
We're not sure they were actually consumed... but a pair left in the mouth of the moose. And that moose (or another) came back and removed undies again.

[ Parent ]
I think they are false advertising also. (2.00 / 4)
Just to get the tourists there. I have yet to see a moose in Maine. But I did see some on a trip into the Canadian Rockies from Great Falls MT up to Banff. I can't remember if the moose were in Montana or Alberta but they were grazing about 50 yards from the road.

The actual signs should read "Watch for Idiots Stopped to Look at the Moose". There were a lot of cars pulled over, cameras in hand.

[ Parent ]
Wellllllllll....... (2.00 / 19)
it is still HIGHLY recommended that the image be hosted on a legit photo-sharing site before posting it to Moose.

That, or be sure you have permission to use the bandwidth of the site you are linking to.

Otherwise, if the owner of the source site gets bent, the image may turn into something totally unlike what you initially posted.

this may be cheating... (2.00 / 12)
but I go to DK build my comment...use their tools...then copy and paste it here.

'I' do that, too! :) (2.00 / 10)
Actually, I usually ask someone for the code..but, if they are not available, my fallback is the dKos trick.

I also do the opposite...when I am working on a diary on dKos, I first write it here and then copy/paste it over there (now, I don't actually know if it is any easier...I just 'grok' the diary system here mo'betta).

I don't see a thing wrong with either shortcut.  /grin

Trust me, they have really good chocolate. (2.00 / 16)
And I don't usually like "creamy centers" at all because you sometimes get really weird ones, but ALL of theirs are good. Even the weird ones!

[ Parent ]
On Moose, (2.00 / 22)
we don't have some of the handy coding stuff dKos has. You have to type out the code for images, links, etc.

The code to turn a word into a link is:

Come to me in my dreams, and then
By day I shall be well again!
For so the night will more than pay

Oooh. You embedded an image to show your code (2.00 / 21)
Sneaky beaky. How did you learn that trick? I don't think you just braided gimp in Jesus school, I think you might have done some coding too.

Hai (2.00 / 12)
One more time. I am not here to engage in blog disruption. My entire social life is about the Intertubes, that's where I can find good humans!

After four years I actually have enticed a good human to come down here and visit me. Next Sunday. Woot!

No names, Moose. Secrit. He is nice. He rocks in a lot of ways. I helped him some, he helps other humans a lot. We have talked on the Telephone. secrit secrit secrit.

I am So looking forward to this visit,

Everyone gets a fresh start here. (2.00 / 9)

ursoklevar, this post made my day. (2.00 / 10)
i actually saw a moose with 'vegetation headress' like the one in the pic, a little too up close and personal.

a friend and i were on a canoe trip in northern Maine and we had just completed a very dangerous set of rapids that tossed our gear. we entered a reedy deadwater area and were preoccupied, not looking where we were going, when we bumped into the side of a moose with its head almost fully submerged. out came his head, his mouth and 12 point rack filled with vegetation. needless to say, he was not all pleased and charged us.

you've never seen a canoe so quickly go into reverse.

thanks for an aMOOZing post.

I'm happy you enjoyed the diary, dearie. (2.00 / 6)
Frankly, I don't think it can hold a candle to your first effort here. That's some angry moose story!

I hung out with a group for a bit back in 89-90 in South Carolina. (2.00 / 2)
Went to Pennsic once. WTF was the name of the group, the Clan? Lupus was champion at sword fighting that year in Pennsic, he and his buddy Chico took out 26 folks in the Woods Battle after doing the breath-through-reeds trick in a swamp then standing up in the middle of the opposition.

There was a 12th Night in Charleston that comes to mind often as well. Ah, the stories!

I never got all the way into it, my girlfriend Mary was a lifer and probably still is. Good folks, good times, but I have too many hobbies already. Enjoy it for me, I may have to find an event somewhere and attend sometime. Do you have any links where I can find info? There was an event in Greeneville TN back then, which is not far from where I am now, making me think about the whole crazy buncha ya'. ;~)

John Askren - "Never get into a pissing match with a skunk."

[ Parent ]
I haven't actively SCA'd in years... but you never leave the Horde :P (2.00 / 1)
Well, you can - but hey, someone will remember me after I'm dead and I like that.

I pulled slowly back as real life cost money and events cost more - I just didn't have the cashflow to SCA in the style I would have like to become accustomed to.

But oh man, do I have some stories.  One about the woods battle at Pennsic XVII - let's just say that it's a good thing we've bought Butler County some ambulances. :P

And then there was this other time... LOL  Good times.

And we sail and we sail and we never see land, just the rum in the bottle and a pipe in my hand...
