JanF :: Friday Morning Moozoog Check-in and Grazing Thread for the Herd
If you are new to the Moose, Kysen left a Moose Welcome Mat (Part Deux) so, please, wipe your feet before you walk in the front door start posting.

Some notes for newbies are in a check-in from earlier in the week.

The big stuff:
- Comments do not Auto-refresh. Click the refresh/reload on your tab to see new ones.
- To check for replies to your comments, click the "My Comments" link in the right-hand column (or go to "My Moose"). Comments will be listed and a link to Recent Replies will be shown.

(Note: Tending comments builds community)

~

This is pretty darned easy to remember ... the posting rules for a new diary:

Be excellent to each other... or else

From Kysen's keyboard to your eyes:

Think of our comment threads as dinner table conversations. We start with the assumption that all come to the conversation with good intentions and go from there. If you get upset or angry, get up from the table and step outside for a bit.

For those looking for a second chance to make a first impression, that is very good advice.

Woke up at about 0530 and couldn't go back to sleep. :-P It happens now and then.

It's 36f here in wild, wonderful West Virginia this hour. Anticipated high of 48f with showers, but the weekend should be glorious, spring-like weather with highs in the 60's.

Thinking of splitting my Facebook account into the one I have now for "serious stuff" and another one "anonymøøse" one for politics, humor and weird stuff. It has been suggested that perhaps employers have found my original one via Google. Comments?

Seems to me some academic should be keen to study forming of a young moose's own herd, ...and if there such a things as private moosemail, from whence came the new herdees and why. Definitely a subject private coversations. NO, I am not volunteering to be chief investigator. 2012 was my investative year; investigations in 2013 would cost me my permanent relationship with the SO.

Oh yes, hi Jan F. am I early enough?

[ Parent ]
You are plenty early! (2.00 / 17)
I cannot seem to disengage from the blogs this morning so here I am.

I was wondering how many made the migration. My personid is 3124 but I joined in June 2011. Nurse Kelley was one of the first of the latest wave and she is 3533.

Horsefeathers, who joined early this morning, is 3698.

So 165 new moozoog (or bots!) since the January 2nd orange diaspora and regathering in purple.

If you examine this color wheel, you will see that we have cycled a bit left and are running slightly counter-clockwise.

What does that signify?

Happy Friday. Mostly cloudy and coolish but not so cold here - 38 degrees. Above freezing this morning and no frost on the windshield when I left for work which is always a treat in the winter.

Odd, odd weather here. It has been cold, but up to the 60's this weekend. Sunday night's low is supposed to be 52, then Monday's high is 52 and plummeting right back to cold again. It's like the weekend is supposed to be a special, bike riding treat.

trs is planning to finish a doghouse he's building on Saturday, so I'll have to ride alone. Sunday we'll ride together after we tear down the gate the previous owners put across the driveway to our property (it's never been developed except for a rudimentary driveway).

and good morning to all mooz. We're having a warm spell before another storm blows in later today. We got about an inch and a half of rain the other day which fell slowly enough to soak into the ground and not run off. It was a good start to the year, I'm hoping we'll come out of drought and actually get the full 14" of average annual rain. When that's all you get you really notice when it's short.

Hi all (2.00 / 22)
it's weirdly warm in Chicago.  Feels like spring and it shouldn't (checking calendar).

My very special cat Tabitha has to go for some medical tests today - please keep her in your thoughts and pray for healthy results.  She is still quite young.

This weekend I'm emceeing a forum entitled "Can't make it round here anymore".  It's about struggling to survive in DuPage county, IL, one of the "wealthiest" areas in Illinois, or so it's always described.  Dr. Bill Barclay is going to be our main speaker, talking about ways to heal the economy that don't shred the social safety net and don't increase the wealth gap.  I am hoping that such grassroots events start to grow and people start to really share information that the corporate media filter ignores.

Good luck to Tabitha. And you, Lori Challinor. (2.00 / 20)

I have found myself in a quandary after Fiercing something and then realizing I did not want to rate it at all. "Meh" does not seem quite right but as long as we can translate it as "oh shit, I rec'ed something I don't actually like" that works. I prefer the radio buttons you can unclick. Oh, and it's raining, and the cats are curled up on the sofa willfully SLEEPING at me, after having woken me up at 1 a.m. because they were bored and wanted treats. I should go shake them.  :grumblegrumblegrumble:

Hope all my mooz-like friends are having better days!

I was reading that there are 47 states in the US (2.00 / 8)
where flu is widespread. To guess "flu" would not be out of line.

Happy Birthday, Bubba (2.00 / 7)
Great math blogs on the front page, in honor of Bubba's birthday I would think.

Ear pain is gone although still clogged. This is a good time to talk about remembrance cause I can't hear you.

Happy Friday!

When we "talk about you" it does not matter that you can't hear (pixels!).

I think that (2.00 / 6)
with my hearing went my sense of humor. I was actually hearing better yesterday but my ear is clogged again. I keep thinking about the doc that didn't seem to get that I was experiencing major pain and offered me first a wellness class, then an anxiety management class.  Ha! Sometimes doctors are dense creatures.

Heading out to pick up the TLO™. It's pizza/movie night, I have a documentary on flamingos.

I had a free morning and it is 70F in Dandridge, TN (2.00 / 8)
today so I decided to take the John Deere Gator down onto the lake bed for the first time and do some rock gathering and cleanup. The water here goes down 40' in winter so our little bay is completely dry. I am making a ramp for such things on our shoreline but it is not finished, so I used my neighbor's trail where it is steep but not worse than I have made it up before.

The chill and holiday travel had plumped me up ten pounds and I was looking forward to getting my hands dirty. I made it down the steep slope no problem, picked up various bottles and cans and other bits of detritus and a load of rock to use for various walls and steps that are part of my current landscaping projects.

Getting back up was another issue.

I might have made it on the first try, but thought it was getting dicey so went back to try again. Getting a bit closer to the mouth of the bay provided slightly less slope, and when that didn't work I sort of progressed through sheer negligence to the water's edge.

Where the intractable Tennessee mud becomes a quagmire of saturated clay.

So, for the next two hours I unloaded the Gator and used the rock to build stops behind the back wheels so I could lift the front end (just within physical possibility) and push it to one side. Rebuilding a rock pile behind the forwarded wheel I repeated the process, thereby in increments walking the damn thing out of the muck.

Covered head to toe in soaking clay - more I than the vehicle - I made it back to my office and stripped on the deck just in time to have a call sitting in my undies with clay drying on my skin.

I'm sure I will get the green monster above the waterline before the bay fills in April. But not today.

We once lost a brand new VW bus due to being mired in mud.... (2.00 / 7)
Unfortunately we were at low tide in Bellingham bay ,and the tide does rise.

It started raining while I was freeing the damn thing. (2.00 / 7)
This time of year the water can go up a few feet very quickly. I had images of the bloody thing sitting there with nothing but the top of the steering wheel out of the water.

Heh..... (2.00 / 5)
Picture the tide rising, us trudging away with the kids car seats in hand, seeing our Brand New Car submerged in salt water, going back the next day with a tow truck, opening the door to see the interior plastered with beer labels from all the bottles we had picked up trying to be conscientiousness beach users...then waiting 3 long days for the insurance company to decide what to do. The VW dealer loved us....two new buses in a week and a great story to tell. I've just hit the high points :)

Good luck retrieving yours!

In high school one of my first friends to have a car had this little (2.00 / 3)
shite box, but with a $2,000 stereo in it. We were having a party on the Lake Ontario beach in Jack Darling Park in Mississauga. I went off somewhere and came back and just the front of the hood was sticking out of the water.

The brakes had come off somehow while it was sitting there with the stereo blasting. Nobody noticed it going backwards until it was too late.

You bus story is classic. I'm sure it was not nearly as funny then as it is now. We had two buses when I was a kid, my dad redid the interiors so we could sleep in them when we took road trips. In the second one he rigged hammocks for my brother and I, mine over the front seats and my brother's lengthwise behind the driver's seat.

Those really were great vehicles. :~)

They were great vehicles..... (2.00 / 2)
We drove the second one for years....all over the west, and all around town....stuffed full of kids with bikes, soccer gear, band equipment, ballet bags, food, backpacks and dogs. Sometimes I felt like I opened the door and stuff and kids just kept coming out...Lol!

More like a Friday evening check in for me (2.00 / 7)
Exhausting 24 hours. In the last three days I've written and recorded a Radio 4 drama spinning off the Savile scandal

The Day the Music Died

First broadcast: Saturday 12 January 2013
Peter Jukes's fast-turnaround fictional drama is sparked by the publication of 'Giving Victims a Voice', the report into allegations of sexual abuse made against Jimmy Savile. A mother and daughter find their relationship tested by a long-buried incident from the past

I think this is also available to US listeners on that link, tomorrow at 2pm EST, and Sunday at 3.30 pm

And I had to file a Daily Beast Newsweek piece on the Savile report. Moneyquotes

Jimmy Savile Report: BBC Presenter Sexually Abused More Than 200 Minors

A former miner turned DJ and TV presenter, Jimmy Savile OBE was one of Britain's most revered post-war pop icons. Through his dedication to charity work, he became a confidant of Prince Charles and friend of longest-serving Prime Minister of the UK, Margaret Thatcher. But Friday, following a three-month police investigation into allegations of sexual abuse, the late icon's reputation came crumbling down. The new report released Friday, co-authored by the Metropolitan Police and the child protection agency the NSPCC exposes Savile as a 'prolific sex offender' who preyed on hundreds of young boys and girls during his fifty-year career, exploiting the laxity and negligence of key pillars of British society in the process....

SNIP

Of the 450 interviews and the more than 200 sexually related crimes, many took place in health service or home office premises where Savile enjoyed special status and access, often his own rooms, and considerable administrative power. Included in the report is a map and index of the alleged locations where the sexual abuse took place. Among the more prominent locations are Britain's premier spinal injuries unit, Stoke Mandeville, and its top high security psychiatric hospital, Broadmoor. The list also includes fourteen hospitals, fourteen assaults in schools, and even a hospice for the dying. Nearly 73 percent of his victims were children, some of them as young as 8. One of the young boys was reportedly a terminally ill patient in Great Ormond Street Hospital during the 1970s. Out of the more than 200 crimes recorded, 126 were indecent assaults, 34 rapes.

SNIP

Whether child abuse happened in the upper echelons of British society may be an open question, but the failure to address it certainly came right from the top.
