JanF :: Monday Morning Moose Check-in and Open Thread for Meeses
If you are new to the Moose, Kysen left a Moose Welcome Mat (Part Deux) so, please, wipe your feet before you walk in the front door start posting. Check out donnamarie's 1/5/2013 Introduction diary for some info on new moose and old moose (and leave your own intro so we know whoose yoose are).

The big stuff:
- Comments do not Auto-refresh. Click the refresh/reload on your tab to see new ones.
- To check for replies to your comments, click the "My Comments" link in the right-hand column (or go to "My Moose"). Comments will be listed and a link to Recent Replies will be shown. (Note: Tending comments builds community)
- Ratings: Fierce means Thumbs Up, Fail means Thumbs Down, Meh means one of three things: I am unFailing you but I can't Fierce you, I am unFiercing after a mistaken Fierce, or Meh. Just Meh.

(Some other commenting/posting/tending notes for newbies can be found in this past check-in)

~

This is pretty darned easy to remember ... the posting rules for a new diary:

Be excellent to each other... or else

From Kysen's keyboard to your eyes:

Think of our comment threads as dinner table conversations. We start with the assumption that all come to the conversation with good intentions and go from there. If you get upset or angry, get up from the table and step outside for a bit.

For those looking for a second chance to make a first impression, that is very good advice.

Mooselicious Comments - Share Your Finds Here

As you graze in the comment threads and come across a funny, witty, brilliant, thought-provoking, or coffee-spewing comment, please save it off and post it here in the check-in. Include a link, if you can, or at least the commenter's name so that we can admire them and their wit and wisdom.

~

See you in the threads!

it's 55 in Wilmington and gonna hit 75 today.  Yard work is definitely in my immediate future.

Good morning to the herd. (2.00 / 28)
Dad and I returned late last night from six days in the UK. We were in Leicester for the meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology. It was an excellent trip. We had the opportunity to visit the potteries museums as part of the pre-conference tour. We also saw the exhibit of the Staffordshire Hoard. Wow, talk about Anglo-Saxon goodies. I was part of a session on animals in the urban environment from 1500 to 1900. It was a good session and a very good conference.

Welcome home~ (2.00 / 21)
Glad you had a good trip.

A year or so after the find one of the cable channels (can't remember which) (2.00 / 20)
broadcast a program about the man who made the discovery.  Treasure hunters had been all over the area but no one had explored this particular farm.  The hunter made a deal with the farmer that he'd split anything he found 50-50.  Both profited hugely from the find and archaeologists and historians have lifetimes of work to enjoy.

Fierce Staffordshire hoard, that's appropriate. (2.00 / 4)
Is that the one found by the metal detecting guy who had never found anything before ? And get half of the value for calling in the local archaeo authorities?

[ Parent ]
Well he's a hero; he's fierce too. Is there a place to learn more. thnx (2.00 / 2)
I loved the idea that they kept it secret and then announced straight away, covered with dirt and all locally. If you have a sec to sum up the rest of the story after the announcement, I am curious how it played out for him and for the local museum. A link should do it. Thanx and nice to see you here browsing with the moose.

Attemting to wake up. Yesterday: permit posted, driveway marked so planning person can determine our street address, big tree stump cut down (thanks to neighbor across the street), ugly gate gone, area where workshop is going now ready for excavator to do his thing.

Iriti's new bike is a win. She rode it for about a half hour yesterday, no trouble shifting for hills. Mine, on the other hand, needs a bit of adjustment.

Need more coffee...

59 degrees here in the beeootiful Shenandoah Valley. Of course that's supposed to be our high for the week - it's all downhill from here.

The good news is that I got to ride my new bike yesterday and I love, love, love it. Also yesterday, finished some last minute land clearing tasks in preparation for the guy to come grade the driveway and the pad for trs' workshop.

Happy Monday all.

good morning all (2.00 / 22)
it's really cold this morning and not expected to warm up much. And no moisture with this front, just very cold and very dry. It's possible to work up a static charge waling across a wood floor when it's like this, that was so startling to me when I first moved out here.

Morning Jan! (2.00 / 20)
Thanks for the suggestion to wait to run the Java update.  I probably wouldn't have seen anything on it this weekend if I hadn't checked in at The Moose!

I just spent the better part of the morning prepping my client's servers (2.00 / 12)
for the Microsoft patch and the expected Java patch tomorrow. I don't want it being installed without my knowledge and causing problems. My research on this problem has shown that Java has a pretty casual attitude towards their obligation to deploy software that can't be hijacked. I won't be doing the automatic updates of that software product any longer.

Words have meaning. Our words will reflect what is in our souls.

[ Parent ]
I agree (2.00 / 10)
I actually made sure everyone had the java disabled in their web browsers and that all prior versions were uninstalled.  I am going to turn off the automatic updates for Oracle/Java too.

Thanks again :)

Weird morning. Warmer at 7AM than it was (2.00 / 19)
at 10 PM last night.  Like 7 degrees warmer (47 vs 40).  Heavy Fog, light mist.  Going up to mid 50s, then, once the sun goes down, dropping like a stone.  Should be 40 at 7PM.  Just what the body needs when it is recuperating from a cold.

Feels more like March than January. Still fishing in a very shallow employment pool with no bites.

Dink is at his regular vet today for an exam and review of his records from the emergency vet yesterday. He refused food again this morning and had some more of that black, watery stool. It's hard to be a 15 y/o old dog. :/

E-vet pretty much wiped out our emergency funds, but I might get a UI payment tomorrow. We'll see...

good morning Fellow Mooz! (2.00 / 13)
eecckk! 13 degrees all of a sudden, feeling colder with the wind chill. not my favorite weather but at least there's lots of sun keeping my S.A.D at bay.

Jan, the high priestess of geekness, i have a question about pic coding i hope you can answer. been fooling around with posting pics, i know there's a bandwith issue. my pics in preview are huge and Photobucket changed their format, so i can't resize them there.

can you show me where how to adjust for appropriate Mooz sizing in the code please?

time...it seems to move so slowly until that day, when it doesn't.

There is a width= parameter on the img code. (2.00 / 6)
For example, here is some image code:
<img src="http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/i420/JanF-blog/Pooties/Backstage.jpg" width=390 title="Don't forget the hover!!">

creates this:

The width=390 indicates 390 pixels. Modify and adjust it to suit your comment. Remember that as comments get more indented, there is less width available on the page to show the photo.

click on to return to the old format, it's still there.  They have a little "give a reason" box for you to choose from and voila, you're back to the old format.  I just did that three days ago.  Didn't like the new format at all.  Good luck!

[ Parent ]
After you switch back, they will send you a Survey Monkey (2.00 / 5)
link so you can let them know what you hated about it. I am curious about what was given as the top reason. I told them that having to click three times when I used to be able to hover and click once to pick up a link was not an improvement. I noticed one of the other top issues was that you could no longer do a right-click save image. Yikes! I did not even realize that ws gone but how could that be considered an improvement?

As someone who writes computer systems, I cannot imagine removing so much functionality and then turning it over to my clients saying "Don't you love this?". I always try to preserve The Old Ways even as I introduce new ones.

it is one of my favorite quotes. Says a lot about my view of things, and the book (the Shangrila story) is one of my favorites.

Lost Horizon is all about the value of seeking refinement, of looking for more than base pleasure in all things.

In discourse there is a tendency to honor the "plain speaker" and disparage those who would try to provide more nuance. That resonates with Palin Attraction Syndrome, not that it is politically one-sided. In most social circles it is more well regarded to speak bluntly and simply, certainly among most men being rude to each other 'jokingly' is held in high esteem.

There is more to life than stating the obvious using short, sharp words.
