[UPDATE 4] 9:28pm  The report is out, and in brief it says: [sic]"She definitely did abuse power and break trust with the people, but we don't recommend a criminal investigation."

What this means is that those of her base will continue to be excited by what a Mavericky Maverick she is, and those on the fence will have yet another reason to question every word that comes out of her mouth.

She broke the public trust and abused the power of her office.

Expect the MSM to talk about this all weekend in between discussing how much the GOP has hosed the economy.
......................

The "Troopergate" report on Governor Palin's abuse of power is in the hands of the Legislative Council right now.  They got their hands on the 200+ page report and 600+ pages of backup documentation this morning at 9am local time (1pm ET).

I am going to keep tabs on this and update this diary as events unfold.

chrisblask :: Troopergate Report Diary - Busted! [UPDATED x7]
MuFlats is a good source for information and commentary.

Alaska Daily News has a blog and articles on it, you can expect them to provide updates.

Todd Palin provided 25 pages of testimony to the council.  Contrary to his earlier statements that he had never had any contact with any public officials on the topic of firing his former brother-in-law, he now admits to "hundreds" of conversations urging state officials on the topic.

More to come.

[UPDATE 1 - 8:48pm] h/t to Fogiv!

Anchorage Daily News has this:

An investigation has concluded that Gov. Sarah Palin abused her power in pushing for the firing of an Alaska state trooper, according to a report unanimously released by the Legislative Council.

Mudflats goes further:

Finding Number One:

For the reasons explained in section IV of this report, I find that Governor Sarah Palin abused her power by violating Alaska Statute 39.52.110(a) of the Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act. Alaska Statute 39.52.110(a) provides

"The legislature reaffirms that each public officer holds office as a public trust, and any effort to benefit a personal or financial interest through official action is a violation of that trust."

Finding Number Two:

I find that, although Walt Monegan's refusal to fire Trooper Michael Wooten was not the sole reason he was fired by Governor Sarah Palin, it was likely a contributing factor to his termination as Commissioner of Public Safety. In spite of that, Governor Palin's firing of Commissioner Monegan was a proper and lawful exercise of her constitutional and statutory authority to hire and fire executive branch department heads.

Finding Number Three:

Harbor Adjustment Service of Anchorage, and its owner Ms. Murleen Wilkes, handled Trooper Michael Wooten's workers' compensation claim properly and in the normal course of business like any other claim processed by Harbor Adjustment Service and Ms. Wilkes. Further, Trooper Wooten received all the workers' compensation benefits to which he was entitled.

Finding Number Four:

The Attorney General's office has failed to substantially comply with my August 6, 2008 written request to Governor Sarah Palin for information about the case in the form of emails.

AKM will continue to update there, check at Mudflats for more.

[UPDATE 2] 9:10pm PDF of the report

[UPDATE 3] 9:17pm MSNBC story

CNN story

ABC News Story

The Telegraph in the UK:

The investigative report concludes that a family grudge wasn't the sole reason for firing Public Safety Commissioner Walter Monegan but says it likely was a contributing factor.

Huffington Post

The investigation revealed that Palin's husband, Todd, has extraordinary access to the governor's office and her closest advisers. He used that access to try to get trooper Mike Wooten fired, the report found.

[UPDATE 5] 10:32pm Mudflats has more.  Worth the read.  This comment pretty well sums up the situation:

Crust Scramble - SouthGA (17:49:18) :
I gotta say it again. McCain would have to drop her like a rock if illegalities were substantiated. Now, thank you God, she's gonna be the gift that keeps on giving.
Priceless.

[UPDATE 6] 10;55pm - FOX News responds by getting Palin's best friend Christin on the air.  "It's a partisan attack by a panel that had a lot of Obama supporters on it".  Then cut to the recent picture of Palin's legs and talk about sexism.  "Fair and balanced", eh?

[UPDATE 7] 12:01am - BBC World News leads with Troopergate ahead of the Global Financial Collapse story.

The Bipartisan group (2.00 / 3)
found that Palin abused her power, and violated state ethics laws.  Just saw on MSNBC.

In response, McCain senior adviser Nicolle Wallace released this statement, NBC's Kelly O'Donnell reports. "Barack Obama's assault on our supporters is insulting and unsurprising. These are the same people obama called 'bitter' and attacked for 'clinging to guns' and faith. He fails to understand that people are angry at corrupt practices in Washington and Wall Street and he fails to understand that America's working families are not 'clinging' to anything other than the sincere hope that Washington will be reformed from top to bottom."

who's starting a betting pool to see how this one is going to be spun??? and then, and then, we can come up with a poll to see which one gets the most votes!  woot woot!

my thought is Obama's terrorist friends hijacked the Alaska state legislature and the bipartisan committee in an effort to derail the apocalypse in order to save their individual rights to 72 virgins...

[ Parent ]
Oh, I think it's pretty clear (2.00 / 4)
that the terrorists Obama pals around with have orchestrated this outrageous effort to frame the respectable governor from Alaska. There's no other explanation. She's doing a fabulous job -- after all, look at her approval ratings!

Oh wait, those are sinking too. Ah, well. I'm sure a few more spastic winks will pull them right back up.

And McCain just blinked on that one, too. (2.00 / 4)
Give the guy credit for that, but unfortunately (for him) it isn't about us giving him credit - it's about him opposing his frothing crowds up supporters.

Oh, the horror of the electoral train wreck...

(slight) props to... (2.00 / 4)
...McCain for ixnaying the "he's and Arab" and "we're scared" kooks at the rally, but still, it may be too little to late.  That shit they were pushing is toxic.  I think he needs to come down harder on the fringe.  Sure, he'll piss off the crazies and hurt his chances, but the reality of the situation is that his chances are already helicoptering between slim and none.

If this guy wants to salvage any credibility, nay even basic dignity, he better get with it.  And soon.

I think it is at the "legacy" stage. (2.00 / 4)
"How do you want to be remembered, John?"

"Conway, whom experience had taught that rudeness was by no means a guarantee of good faith, was even less inclined to regard a well-turned phrase as a proof of insincerity."  James Hilton, Lost Horizon

[ Parent ]
Good point. (2.00 / 2)
If he starts trying to save face as the election draws nearer, we'll know he realizes he's lost it. This is McCain's last hurrah. Surely he won't run for another term in the Senate after this debacle -- at this point, it was just a launchpad for his presidential campaign anyway. What people remember from this campaign will, most likely, be what they recall of John McCain.

"I now am bold to say to the swift changing hours,

[ Parent ]
Really, I think he'd be doing much better (2.00 / 3)
if he'd put his foot down and drown out the crazies. Independents don't like this garbage. They want to focus on the issues, and this kind of slime is a huge turn off. Thanks to that raving lunatic he's put on his ticket, he's going to get the crazy vote. He needs to be pulling from the middle, but he's McFAILing. Tactics like this do him no credit, and hopefully he'll recognize that quickly. It's nice that he shot down the "Obama is an Arab" business, but it simply isn't good enough.

The whole mess gives me heartburn, frankly.

Absolutely right: (2.00 / 3)
it simply isn't good enough.

Ricki learned to braid gimp at Jesus Camp.

[ Parent ]
And as I arrive home I catch the McCain backpedalling (2.00 / 3)
on the "Obama may be a terrorist" meme.

While this makes me think slightly better of McCain, it is battery acid to the frothing base that has recently built up.  McCain was faced with agreeing that Obama was "an Arab" and he cracked.

1/  That's what happens when first you choose to deceive

2/  If you don't have the chutzpah to stick to your own line of argument, you may not be qualified to be President.

"Conway, whom experience had taught that rudeness was by no means a guarantee of good faith, was even less inclined to regard a well-turned phrase as a proof of insincerity."  James Hilton, Lost Horizon

We did not come to fear the future. We came here to shape it. --President Barack Obama

[ Parent ]
It doesn't make me think a whit better about McCain. (2.00 / 4)
He's backpedaling because his garbage wasn't going over well -- too much backlash, and he knows what will happen if he outright says what half the Republican base is thinking. The MSM would fry him, and rightfully so.

It's sad, honestly, because I used to respect him more than most Republicans. What Bush did to him in 2000 disgusted me. I'm still partially in shock that he's managed to run a sleazier campaign than his predecessor.

"I now am bold to say to the swift changing hours,

[ Parent ]
I don't retract my recent attack against him, (2.00 / 4)
he agreed with his handlers to pretend to believe that Obama is a scary black muslim terrorist.  The fact that he couldn't keep it up just compounds his problems.

"Conway, whom experience had taught that rudeness was by no means a guarantee of good faith, was even less inclined to regard a well-turned phrase as a proof of insincerity."  James Hilton, Lost Horizon

and keep in mind... (2.00 / 4)
that while he was trying to quell the tide of nastiness, his campaign was saying that it was OBAMA who was attacking his supporters...

In response, McCain senior adviser Nicolle Wallace released this statement, NBC's Kelly O'Donnell reports. "Barack Obama's assault on our supporters is insulting and unsurprising.

You know... (2.00 / 4)
I think the Republican Party is experiencing something akin to heart failure, where the body diverts blood away from less important tissues and organs to maintain flow to the most vital organs, the heart and brain.

It wouldn't surprise me in the least if the RNC threatened to pull the plug on his funds if he didn't dial the venomous rhetoric back.  They just might be moving into salvage mode.  They don't want the S.S. McFailin' to suck more Senate and House seats with it.

soooo....suspend his campaign in definitely?!?!?! (2.00 / 3)
now that's a mccain/palin ticket i can get behind!

[ Parent ]
That would be awesome... (2.00 / 2)
...but don't count on it.  If they publicly pulled the plug on McCain it would almost certainly depress their turnout.  That would hurt their downticket races nearly as much as the dismal McCain/Palin ticket.

Ricki learned to braid gimp at Jesus Camp.

is it possible to replace a ticket this late in the game? (2.00 / 3)
i know that it might be political suicide, but could they replace plain?  could that be a big hunt for red october surprise?
