Good Motley Monday morning, Mooz. I will be your host each Monday for our daily check-in and open thread. Jump in and remember: As long as you're nice, it's impossible to be off topic in this thread. Can't be done.

iriti :: Motley Monday Check In and Moose-ings from the Herd
Hope everyone had a good weekend. Ours was lovely if expensive (we hired an excavator and ordered trs' workshop). On the other hand, I have picked up some poison ivy - says a lot about climate change that it's even out this time of year.

Important miscellaneous stuff:

Always remember the Moose Golden (Purple?) Rule:

Be kind to each other... or else.

Reminders from Jan F.

- Ratings: Fierce means Thumbs Up, Fail means Thumbs Down, Meh means one of three things: I am unFailing you but I can't Fierce you, I am unFiercing after a mistaken Fierce, or Meh. Just Meh.

And one from me:
Refugees from a site of a different color BEWARE! Placement of the ratings buttons is the opposite of what you're used to. Fierce (that's good) is on the right, Fail (that's bad) is on the left and there's an extra Meh in the middle. Until your habits change be careful. I've failed or meh-d some terrific folks!

Heading for a high of 39. Chill coming tomorrow, high right now forecast at 18!

Looked high and low for a purple moose, best I could do was the fellow below. My kingdom* to the person with the mad skillz to shop antlers on this dude.

*Assuming I ever inherit a kingdom. Current portents are not favorable.

39 degrees and rising here in TidewaterHampton Roads (I miss being called Tidewater).

It is supposed to get really cold (for these parts at least) over the next couple of days (with nights in the teens).

Hope everyone has a good start to their week...

Oh...we are tivo'ing the innauguration (I bet I butchered that spelling) and will watch with pride this evening.

you mean it's not Tidewater? (2.00 / 13)
When did that change, when the PR people from the Chamber of Commerce got hold of it?

[ Parent ]
The 'official' change looks to have happened in 1983.. (2.00 / 6)
which was before I lived here. The 'common use' change, imo, happened in the early 90s.

Although the designation initially applied to the water area, the region has also come to be known as "Hampton Roads", a label more specific than the term "Tidewater Virginia", which could by implication, include other areas of tidal lands in eastern Virginia. The U.S. Postal Service changed its postmark from "Tidewater Virginia" to "Hampton Roads, Virginia" beginning in 1983.

How can you not be Tidewater? In what context? On what authority? According to what style manual? When did this happen without my being aware of it?

And by the way... where are you again?

Hotlist Update: (2.00 / 22)
From Soapblox Tech Support:

We looked into your case and it looks like the menu on your site has been customized and the Hot List item removed. I assigned it to one of our developers to restore that item. You should expect it back within a couple days.

So, for those of you still trying to find the hidden link/button...wait a couple days and there should be a Hotlist link in the side menu ready for ya to click.

/grin

Awesome, Kysen! (2.00 / 21)
Thanks for looking into that.

I have one other request which would make a big big difference to many of us who like to link.

At the bottom of the "Post a comment" box (and the diary writing interface) there are 3 formatting buttons: Bold, Italic, Quote.

Bold does this: <b></b>
Italic does this: <i></i>
Quote does this: <blockquote></blockquote>

Would it be possible for the developers to add "Link" that simply puts the basic link code in for us to fill in, like this:
<a href=""></a>

When I was the webmistress on a WordPress site, we had the ability to add buttons and assign HTML to them. I know that Soapblox is not WordPress but HTML is HTML.

Words have meaning. Our words will reflect what is in our souls.

[ Parent ]
Oh that would make me soooo (2.00 / 14)
happy! I just copy/paste links because I still have trouble doing that. Because I am a dork.

Shake it like a Polaroid picture.

[ Parent ]
Ha! I thought that said "Because I am drunk". (2.00 / 4)
That would make copy/paste difficult also.

Words have meaning. Our words will reflect what is in our souls.

[ Parent ]
I used to have a little wordpad (2.00 / 12)
document that had templates of all those little scraps of html, esp the ones I could never remember, Pop over, grab one, pop buck.

[ Parent ]
While that would indeed be most wonderful... (2.00 / 7)
I don't think we can do it.

I could be wrong, it would not be the first time (it would be the second)...but I think those buttons are 'set' and we cannot add/remove them.

As pointed out above, however, I am lacking ANY skill in such coding endeavors...so if someone has a different answer, please give a holler.

I feared as much. (2.00 / 6)
I didn't think I was the first person to want that, just the most recent. ;)

I used to type them out all the time when I did a comment at the GOS that was a recap of the previous day's blogging for a community I was part of (it was easier to type them than to copy/paste when I got on a roll, and I was composing the comment offline). I just want to get back to my lazy lazy ways!!

here's another sort-of tech question -- (2.00 / 14)
sometimes, but not always, when I type a comment and then Preview, the preview opens up just fine above where I've typed, but the Post is in its own little box at the top of the thread, usually overlaid on something.

Wondering why it does that?
and, of course, this time it didn't

I have a story for you. (2.00 / 15)
Monster went to International Car Show yesterday, so I was expecting a quiet day at home. About 10AM I figured out that the furnace pilot blew out, because of the bad wind storm. By the time he got home, it was 45 in here. I was under blankets with heating pad and all the pooties on my lap. Opening the door to get more wood while it was 8 out would have made it worse. We waited it out. Tonight I will learn how to re-light the pilot light.

Having trouble getting moving this morning. I think I'm still tired from Friday's adventure. In talking to the excavating contractor on Saturday, I did find out the land we own is easier to dig in than the land at work - no shale layer. So you may hit the occasional rock, but you won't hit a whole layer of it. Good news for digging a basement when it comes time to build the house. Iriti has changed her mind somewhat on the idea of a basement since watching the DIY network and learning how basements can now be done. It does make things easier to turn a basement into a livable space.

It is a pond with a small waterfall. It only took a couple of days for two of us to dig, and then a couple more to lug the rocks from the driveway to it. Since it is at least 2 feet deep in the center, the fish can stay in all year which is great. I love it! Dink goes to the vet in half an hour for an exam and review. He ate some chicken this morning, another good sign. We're hoping for continued improvement this week. He even made it up/down the stairs unassisted!

This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move."

What a great way to start the week! (2.00 / 11)

In the upper teens here in Columbia. Needed to get out of the (2.00 / 16)
house early this am -- eggs to lay, ground to scratch -- but then I stopped in here.  Now I'm late getting started doing my stuff!.  Starting tomorrow, Chubby Cheeks will be returning to the water aerobics pool, first time in 12 years.  If I get the leg muscles built up I'll have good reason to continue refusing to have a knee replaced.  Hope my head has begun to function properly since I put on my sneakers this morning -- on the wrong feet.  Felt like a 4 year old learning to tie her shoelaces.  Have a great day and see ya later.

You put your shoes on the wrong fee? (2.00 / 9)

I guess I shouldn't laugh at Pat ... (2.00 / 8)
My proofreading leaves something to be desired today. :(

You would have thought it would hurt but no. I just thought my (2.00 / 8)
left foot looked funny, then I noticed that the shoe I was planning to put on my right foot looked funny too.  Aha, caught my oops before actually trying to walk.  At least, even though I was unaccompanied, I managed go out for breakfast, do my laundry and get signed up at the rec center without further incident.  We'll see how tomorrow in the pool goes.....

Today (2.00 / 12)
It's 28 degrees Here Near DC. The weather forecast is "chance of snow or rain" but last time they said that it was sunny and mild. Everybody think dry thoughts today. Dry wit, dry humor, dry skin, dry laundry, dry well...

Let there be light. Then let there be a cat, a cocktail, and a good book.

and extra dry champagne to toast President Obama. (2.00 / 7)

38F in Dandridge TN today, (2.00 / 10)
according to thefuckingweather.com.

And the lake is basically full.

It has come up another foot or so from there in the past day. It seems that river levels on the Tennessee are falling off, so I imagine they will start trying to bring it back down to accommodate the spring run off, but since an equivalent drop takes four months in the fall I don't imagine it will get down to where it was before it starts coming up again.

Nice seeing water out my office window again.

-2 here in central Iowa. Another good reason to count the days and (2.00 / 9)
minutes until my Miami getaway next week. In which, by that time I'm sure it will be in the unseasonably tropical 70's here in Iowa, zapping all the pleasure out of the sadistic Midwestern  ritual of savoring  warm climates in January while friends and family back home freeze their tushees off, and then bragging to said friends and family how nice and warm it is where you are.

Naaah (2.00 / 6)
It wouldn't spoil your fun like that.

You deserve a Miami getaway after -2!
