JanF :: Thursday Morning Moose Check-in and Open Thread for the Meeses
If you are new to the Moose, Kysen left a Moose Welcome Mat (Part Deux) so, please, wipe your feet before you walk in the front door start posting.

The important stuff to get you started:
- Comments do not Auto-refresh. Click the refresh/reload on your tab to see new ones.
- To check for replies to your comments, click the "My Comments" link in the right-hand column (or go to "My Moose"). Comments will be listed and a link to Recent Replies will be shown. (Note: Tending comments builds community)
- Ratings: Fierce means Thumbs Up, Fail means Thumbs Down, Meh means one of three things: I am unFailing you but I can't Fierce you, I am unFiercing after a mistaken Fierce, or Meh. Just Meh.

(Some other commenting/posting/tending notes for newbies can be found in this past check-in and, of course, consult Meese Mehta for all your questions on meesely decorum.)

Here is a great link to have open in a tab: Motley Moose Recent Comments

~

This is pretty darned easy to remember ... the posting rules for a new diary:

Be excellent to each other... or else

From Kysen's keyboard to your eyes:

Think of our comment threads as dinner table conversations. We start with the assumption that all come to the conversation with good intentions and go from there. If you get upset or angry, get up from the table and step outside for a bit.

For those looking for a second chance to make a first impression, that is very good advice.

GOP Senator: Hillary Clinton Faked Emotional Outburst At Benghazi Hearing:
After the hearing, [Freaking Senator Who I Did NOT Vote For Ron] Johnson complained to Buzzfeed that Clinton had planned to become emotional as a way to avoid answering questions:

I'm not sure she had rehearsed for that type of question. I think she just decided before she was going to describe emotionally the four dead Americans, the heroes, and use that as her trump card to get out of the questions. It was a good way of getting out of really having to respond to me.

In my defense, I phonebanked in 2010 for Russ Feingold and cried on election night when Russ and a lot of other good progressives went down in the midterms. And don't even get me started on Gov. Scott Walker.

He and Rand Paul were only preening for the cameras and were more worried about their hair than any answers she may have had to their "questions".

This part cracked me up:

Actually a story like that works better to comment on the next day after all the news outlets have posted and the quote nuggets have been mined.

I find it endlessly fascinating how each news site chooses to report and the subtle and not-so-subtle spin they add.

Will someone please mail me to Hawai'i. I have to go into the office. We are meeting with a prospective student, and I need to photocopy all my course materials for next week. Brrrrrr.

Morning, all - (2.00 / 20)
We have about 18° with about an inch of snow on the ground. Kidlet's school has been canceled for today - which does not make her happy. It's not that she enjoys going to school, but her driver's ed behind the wheel class is run by the county school system. This would be her last night. We'll check this afternoon, but their policy is if school is called off, the class is canceled.

Spent a good part of yesterday thawing out a couple drain traps that had frozen. The community manager's shower drain froze up, and he ended up standing ankle deep in water when he started his shower. So, we went under his home, found where the insulation had come loose, thawed out the trap with a heat gun, and resealed everything.

Secretary Of Defense Lifts Ban On Women In Combat

In a surprise move, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta removed the military ban on women in combat on Wednesday. Lifting the ban will open service on the front lines to thousands of women.

According to the Associated Press, the move was recommended by the Joint Chiefs of Staff and overturns a 1994 rule banning women from being assigned to smaller ground combat units. Smaller exemptions to the rule were passed in 2012, but the new decision opens up 238,000 positions where women were formerly banned.

The service branches have to report on their implementation plans by May 15 and they can request special exemptions for certain combat jobs through 2016. The most important thing it does is open up promotions to women that were limited to those with combat experience. Maybe one day we will see a woman chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Words have meaning. Our words will reflect what is in our souls.

i went to da orange to post a message for our the quilt sara is putting together for commonmass and GMB02, interestingly enough there was a scoop message that i'm now a TU at orange place.  last i checked i was still a TU even though i hadn't posted since this past summer.  weird...

Does the morgue wagon come with the job?

The algorithm for TU there is very odd now. (2.00 / 16)
It used to be that if you went off the grid for a week you would lose TU and would have to go to the pootie diaries and post a couple of LOLs to get your mojo back. Now people's TU is much stickier. It is also nearly impossible now for anyone new to get 5 bars. People who had 5 bars at the DK3 to DK4 conversion kept them but if you were at 4 bars, that will probably be it.

Ha! Look at all the useless stuff in my brainz!

Morning Meeses (2.00 / 18)
Almost typed "messes" which describes me this morning but I hope does not describe the rest of you!

18 today, headed for 21.

It snowed last night, only about an inch but it caught folks off guard and the roads are covered so Kidlet has no school. Typically she would consider this a good thing, but it's her last day of "behind the wheel" driver's ed so she is NOT a happy camper.

Your abominable kitteh does not scare me! (2.00 / 16)
One inch of snow is actually worse than 6 inches. It tends to make the roads more slippery ... maybe because they aren't going to send out plows to scrape an inch off ... or because people don't expect it to be slick. I decided to postpone my travel day yesterday to Friday because the dusting of snow put a coating on the roads and just a short drive in the morning made me realize that it was not going to be a good day to travel. It snowed off and on all morning so I was glad I was not driving. Fortunately, the work could be put off a couple of days. Friday is it though ... project needs to be done before the weekend.

Please send healing energy to my daughter-in-law (2.00 / 21)
She was rushed to surgery early this morning after significant post-partum bleeding and is now in the ICU up in the frozen tundra of New Hampshire. Wish I was still there! Thankfully things seem stabilized but whatever prayers and positive thoughts and vibes you good folks could send her way would surely help. Thanks!!

My daughter-in-law's bleeding was evidently triggered at the point where the placenta had detached from the uterine wall. During surgery they put a balloon in the uterus to maintain pressure there. She went through a lot between 26 hours of "natural" childbirth festivities, then a C-section with a lot of blood loss. She is such a trooper, so brave and fierce, but I still wish I was up in New Hampshire with her and the family.

Feel better, dear occupant! (2.00 / 14)
Yesterday I awoke feeling AWFUL - achy all over, even my hair hurt. I was sure that the flu had called my number until Mr. Carolina suggested that it might be a reaction from the tetanus-diptheria-pertussis booster shot I had on Tuesday, as he had a similar reaction once. I dragged my sorry ass through the day, drinking microwaved chicken broth and shuffling around and whimpering. By evening, I was feeling a bit better. This morning I awoke feeling FINE. Absolutely fine. It's a euphoric feeling (but a weird juxtaposition to my daughter-in-law's medical travails).

Try some chicken broth - if you don't have chicken soup handy, it's great. Just out it in a mug and microwave it for a minute or more. Hope you feel better!

Was 57 at dawn when we got up for the dog walk this morning. No car for 5 days while they repair the head gasket and do whatever they do at the mechanics? Found a ride to art class tonight but need to think of something to paint. I have a solo show coming up in September at a coffee shop with small wall spaces so must come up with some small paintings. Last month I took a city bus... (2.00 / 17)
For the first time in close to 40 years. The bus was full too, and it was sort of fun. While I was on the bus I pulled out my phone to check the route online and it pulled up a map with an indicator line showing the exact location of the bus and it told me where to get off and how to finish up walking to my destination. How cool is that?

[ Parent ]
That is *very* cool! (2.00 / 11)
When we went on a short vacation to San Antonio many years ago, we decided to not rent a car. We were going to be on the River Walk and figured that most things we needed would be right there and, really, who wants to drive from the airport to a downtown area in a strange city and then worry about where to park?

They had a trolley car system that took us around downtown. We took city buses to the more outlying areas. The best way to see a city is on the ground or without having to watch traffic.

Dink Bender's Morning Pupdate (2.00 / 18)
Turn for the worse. We weren't certain at first, but he's urinating much more than he appears to be drinking and he also has apparently lost all bladder control. His vet recheck is later this morning.

He's also having more and more trouble with his back legs, and walks partly sideways.

Added to all his other symptoms, this makes me think "tumor."

Hullo, peeps. (2.00 / 14)
A hazy morning. No fog overhead, but I can see a fat fickle finger of it poking through the Golden Gate just to my north. Mild temp in the low 50s right now, and should warm to about 60 later on.

I ordered a pizza last night that disappointed. Rubbery cheese, not enough toppings, and soggy-bottomed crust. I think I can remedy that last problem by reheating in the oven, but it is a disappointment. Next time I'll go with my old favorite pizza joint.

Today I may go out for a hot breakfast. After that, laundry and a couple of Important Phone Calls. Then leftover pizza for dinner! :-)

Do you heat it up, or just have it cold? (2.00 / 7)
I'm seldom in the mood for cold pizza myself, but I know plenty of people who swear by it. :-)

When I lived in Minnesota (2.00 / 6)
There was no such thing as warm pizza. It arrived cold. But now I pretty much heat it up. I like it better re-heated actually. there's a place (chain) down the street here that makes the best pizza, called Anthony's Coal-fired Pizza. They almost burn their pizzas which is really kind of nice.

I have heard him called many things but "glitch" is new. ;)

"Pin your money to your girdle and don't talk to strangers."  My Grandmom's advice when I went away to school.  I don't wear a girdle and have never met a stranger.  Sorry Grandmom!

I am loving being able to fully interact with this site on my iPad as well as my laptop - whoever's behind the "tech" side of Motley Moose, a hearty "high five"!!! Very cool stuff!

Let there be light. Then let there be a cat, a cocktail, and a good book.
