Khloe :: Saturday Morning Moose Check In - Mootant Moose Musings
I would like to welcome you if you are new to the Moose. Feel free to walk around and check out your new digs. Feel free to comment at any time or continue lurking as you will.  Kysen has left us all a Welcome Mat Part Duex to help us get around easier.

JanFab has written out some instructions to help.

The big stuff:
- Comments do not Auto-refresh. Click the refresh/reload on your tab to see new ones.
- To check for replies to your comments, click the "My Comments" link in the right-hand column (or go to "My Moose"). Comments will be listed and a link to Recent Replies will be shown. (Note: Tending comments builds community)
- Ratings: Fierce means Thumbs Up, Fail means Thumbs Down, Meh means one of three things: I am unFailing you but I can't Fierce you, I am unFiercing after a mistaken Fierce, or Meh. Just Meh.

The most important rule around here is

Be kind to each other... or else.

In other words, if you don't want it said to you, then don't say it to someone else. Respect is an important thing. If you feel the need to not respect, then step away and take a breath. Political debate can be both spirited and respectful.

For those of you lurking and being shy, no reason to be nervous. Drop us a comment and start making your Moose Tracks. No time like the present.

G'Mornin' Everyone! (2.00 / 43)
19 degrees and we got 3 inches of snow yesterday. It looks so beautiful out. Almost like a snow globe.  How is your day going?

A morning earworm for you.

Dachies!!! (2.00 / 34)
Great way to start the day. Except I should retitle that "Cruelty" to Dachsies. ;)

Good Morning, herd. (2.00 / 31)
it snowed last night. I am not a big fan of snow. It is also 14 degrees outside. Frankly, I don't like winter, Bring on the spring. the good news is that the builders made good progress on my house this week. The roof has been fixed, and the sheet rock has been replaced in the bedroom.

I'm happy that it is moving right along. (2.00 / 23)
By Monday it's suppose to be 40 here. It will be headed your way after it leaves here.

[ Parent ]
I heard that we were supposed to be back in the 40s next week. (2.00 / 27)
I am so glad since it is the first week of the spring semester, and I am just miserable when it is this cold. At least I have NO evening classes this term. It is the first time in 4 semesters that I don't have a night class. WOOT!

[ Parent ]
there is something (2.00 / 23)
about going out in the dark when it is freezing cold that is incredibly exhausting.  It's been quite bitterly cold here of late and the wind has been brutal.  Makes me want to do nothing but sleep, which, alas, is not an option.

[ Parent ]
Yes, I give you my old used up weather and *you* pass it on to blue jersey mom. (2.00 / 23)
Although, you probably actually pass it on to Dee. New Jersey actually has more moderate temperatures than the more northern longitudes that we inhabit.

Words have meaning. Our words will reflect what is in our souls.

[ Parent ]
I sympathize. I really, really, really do not like the cold anymore, (2.00 / 20)
although I didn't mind it when I was younger. Glad to hear your house is getting back into shape, how much longer do you expect it to take?

Most of the interior work should be finished next week. (2.00 / 18)
We will be able to move back into our bedroom. The exterior will take longer. The structural and roofing work is done, but the stucco can't be replaced until the weather gets much warmer.

[ Parent ]
Ah, good. Must be a relief to have got so far relatively quickly. (2.00 / 15)

Good morning, (2.00 / 27)
currently 19° here in the Shenandoah Valley, with an expected high of 34. I raided Kidlet's chocolate chip Leggo waffles, and have the first cup of my pot of coffee in hand. We got somewhere between 1/2 and 1" of snow last night. Not enough to plow, but enough to cause irritation, so I'll run a salt spreader this morning on my two hour Saturday shift. We alternate Saturdays, and this is my turn.

We may make a run to Lumber Liquidators today to look at what they have to offer. We were looking at flooring for the house last weekend when we bought the workshop, and we discovered that bamboo flooring is around the same price as a mid-grade laminate. We want to see what they offer. There will be no carpet when we build the house. An occasional area rug, perhaps, but no carpet.

No matter where you go, there you are...

Buckaroo Banzai

We gradually ripped all the carpet out of our house. (2.00 / 23)
The living room carpet came up after Tom (Son 2) poured a gallon of orange juice into it. Fortunately, we have wood floors underneath. As part of the re-build of our bedroom (after the tree landed on it), the builders are going to refinish our bedroom floor. It is going to look great.

[ Parent ]
Some good coming from that dang tree (2.00 / 21)
and you can tell Tom for me that not only does he have good taste in flooring, he has a great name (sez another Tom ;) )

I like it , Moozmuse - I'm pretty well burnt out on political (2.00 / 12)
snarling , even with people with whom i'm in basic agreement on most things . Not gonna suggest why - but here we are. At first I thought OhNo!! when I saw something with some  "Southerners are bad" stuff , but i was reading before awake - and when I returned the following afternoon it was really nice to see how many people rushed forward with nice things to say, including the author of the  article i read only through the before the fold part and then when not awake.I was fearful , as I told LabWitch, that I had merely walked in a small circle to point of beginning. But it IS nice here!

Hey Tom, welcome to the Moose! (2.00 / 10)
Glad you like it, we've just been building a new gazebo out back.

As gets said a fair bit, the Moose is an exercise in socialization. While there is a political tilt to it and we try to talk about serious issues as much as is tolerable, an overarching goal of civility in discourse is much more the point.

Like any group of friends there are moments when things can get a bit dodgy, either because some lunkhead is crashing the party or a couple good friends butt heads, but like any healthy group we try and usually succeed to come back into balance.

There is no "one" behind the Moose, two-dozen opposing bloggers from the 2008 democratic primaries chose to work together to see just how a maximally open online forum might should be done. On average the success has been very satisfactory, we manage to discuss serious issues enough that we each risk getting our ears tweaked a bit but very rarely come to blows. In the very rare occasion that someone cannot keep from breaking tables and chairs they are shown the door so the rest can continue, but even then there isn't anyone who can't be given a second chance.

Make yourself at home, JanF has taken over the hospitality committee which arranges a good spread of snacks. Spacey, Kysen and fogiv are often found mixing things which may or may not be safe for human consumption, if that sort of thing tickles your fancy there are couches in the den where you can sleep off the effects.

-cheers!

We are going to go for bamboo roll-up shades shortly, (2.00 / 6)
as we work our way through renovating another rental. The owner was just here and blown away by what we have done in less than five months, but if we are going to live somewhere we are going to leave a mark.

Making a profit on renovations is a game for professionals, and even then it is a gamble. Having owned, rented and been landlords it has dawned on us that you have to do it because you want to.

John Askren - "Never get into a pissing match with a skunk."

[ Parent ]
I've used bamboo flooring and like it a lot (2.00 / 14)
Most recently had this strand bamboo put in the main bath of my new place:

http://www.lumberliquidators.c...

In my old house I used natural and carbonized horizontal bamboo flooring in a bedroom, hallway and small bath.  Back then there weren't so many options for bamboo, but they've held up well.  $1.99/s.f. at Lumber Liquidators gave a nice floor at a manageable price.  The strand bamboos they have now are supposed to be harder, more durable (tho not quite as cheap).

I agree, Khloe. (2.00 / 14)
Here we don't need "streams" to find the diaries. The recent list is never so long that you can't scroll it.

The key is to give people time to find your diary and try not to be impatient if they don't find it immediately.

Speaking of which, does anyone know what the subscribe link does? I thought it would email me when the author posted but so far ... crickets.

I have reached the unfortunate stage (2.00 / 16)
where the side effects of the prednisone are worse than the poison ivy. It's the pred that gives me the headache - every time I'm on it, which is quite often because seeing a photo of poison ivy gives me a rash.

Ah well, I'm in the dose-decreasing phase now so things should improve. The rash is dried up but where it was really bad will take probably a month for the skin to completely clear.

prednisone (2.00 / 9)
the wonderdrug that makes you psychotic.  oh yeah, we thought we had a great magic bullet for arthritis, then patients started going psychotic on us.  yep...still it does have it's short term uses.  it's good for many of my symptoms (various) but, by the end of day one, i'm already heading toward the psychotic horizon.  by the end of a course, i'm soooo ready to be off that stuff because while my symptoms (usually skin related) are well on their way to clearing up, my head is a mess.

i do hope that your poison ivy clears up and that your course of prednisone is over soon.  hang in there, there will be an end to it.

Are you saying you have had a headache for 4 days? (2.00 / 10)
You are suffering too much. I used to have migraines that lasted up to 7 days, as I've gotten older it's declined to 3-4 days. When I was diagnosed with breast cancer I decided to take a med to prevent them for occurring and it really helps, it really works. I take a low dose of a tricyclic antidepressant called nortriptyline. I'm mentioning this to you because I wish I had not waited so long to use this preventative treatment and wanted to make sure you knew about it if your doc hadn't informed you.

Be well.

Good afternoon, moozoog. (2.00 / 19)
Actually, we are mootant moose since we form a herd, hehe. The 4-legged ones don't, I read somewhere on the intertubes. Early afternoon, still cold, but the farmers here say the weather often changes with the full moon, which is tomorrow, and right on time the weather forecast next week is for milder temperatures: hi 40s - lo 50s during the day. A welcome change from the 20s we've been having for the last couple of weeks.

we've both remarked many times on how much like the missing brother/sister we are to each other. We'd absolutely have to get flumptytail to go with us to some of the idiot to - dos ; she likes weird stuff to eat , so a lunch at Sonic of onion rings , limeade , and corn dogs would get us alllll going.Your dogs could be in the rear of the Forester , and if flumpty didn't mind Tsula could have her safety harness fastened  next to her in the back seat. Come to think of it - you two would likely insist on flipping to see who got to sit next to Sweet Tsula. I love rthe way she strains her harness to rest her head on my right hand when we're driving home from anywhere.

Coming down. (2.00 / 11)
Down two feet as of yesterday, looks to be coming down fast.

I wonder what the folks managing all this are planning. Apparently there is this much mass in water coming down out of the Smokies this spring like every other, and they have to have a place to put it. Historically it starts coming up about Feb 22, and right now it is about 25'/2.5 billion tons above that.

Infrastructure and interdependency has always fascinated me. Doing what I do for a living just makes it worse, I can't watch this lake go up and down without thinking about the electric grid, river systems, watershed, agriculture, shipping, economics...

we plant every year. This year we're starting as early as possible with cool weather crops and then will go to a fall garden since the summers have become too hot and too dry. I grow gourds for the wierdness factor and sometimes make stuff with them, they take the heat better than anything edible.

I had a patient tell me she HAD to have IV Ativan 'right damn now!', because she was an alcoholic and her tolerance to alcohol was so high that if it gets below 400 she has a seizure, and IV Ativan is the only thing that will prevent her from seizing.

I gotta give her an A for creativity.

I'm posting a musing. (2.00 / 11)
The temps are dropping somewhat in the South Bay (SF Bay Area), presently 56 with some rain drops coming and going.

I don't want to scare you off but the GOP posted an online survey that is worth a look. No depth, just asking what they should talk about, however on the last screen it gives you an opportunity to write down your thoughts. I couldn't resist.

http://growthopp.gop.com/defau...

Your party is one of hatred, discrimination and prejudice. While my contact information is bogus, the answers I have provided to you are true. I hope you will consider them because the damage your party, (Romney would have done to our country is frightening) and your current policies generate is  grave. They hurt hard working people, those in poverty, the poor, lower and middle class individuals and families. Your party is one of doing for oneself and not helping your fellow citizens. Your party consistently construes data and facts that mislead people, you prey on fear, racial hatred. You have done a grave disservice to those who believe in you, who are people who truly care about fellow humans, their environment and want to see people lifted out of poverty. You have hurt them because you have lied to them and invoked a mistrust and hatred of our president. If you continue as is, you will fail. There are good people in your party and I pray they will not allow you to gerrymander the presidency and inhibit democratic voters from exercising their right to vote.

It really felt good, this rant I bestowed. Don't let Reince (sp) scare you off in the initial video, just skip it and click to take the survey and do share.

At sighting I did twitch (2.00 / 10)
but I was very happy to oblige their multiple choice questions, the answers of which will not help them understand what is wrong with their party.

As for gun violence, given TLO™s age, she hasn't been exposed too much. I did tell her about Sandy Hook although at her school their approach was not to talk about it unless asked a direct question. They've since had lock down practice and drills. She hears Glen ranting and tunes him I out, but picks up on some  important points. It's easy for kids to get scared in our society as we experience it today, and maybe that's not a bad thing since it tells us there is something wrong with our laws and freedoms.

It sounds like a good time to turn off the news and provide a lot of reassurance to your baby. Talking with her about how your world is essentially safe and putting in perspective the likelihood of being involved in some type of incident. My mother in law's friend, a 5ft tall woman with a concealed carry permit posted a terrible graphic depicting Biden whispering in Obama's ear  "You do understand that trying to take weapons from (insert state) is suicide, right?" I explained to her that Biden's approach is to focus on decreasing gun violence and preventing guns from getting in the wrong hands; that any new regulation would not effect someone like her. She really irritated me bc adding to the  narrative that Obama is coming for your guns. I actually have no problem with him coming for guns and this misinterpreted right she thinks she has. Of course, she thinks the answer is to scape goat the mentally ill. Hell, maybe my private practice will thrive! Later she posted a local news article about gun violence happening in real time, but don't place new regulation on gun ownership for damn's sake and don't connect the obvious dots.

The cancer journey has been an interesting one complete with avoidance and procrastination. It's hard to know about the effects of radiation as the months progress but I realized the other day I am almost 6 months from completing radiation. I've been feeling like I haven't moved on yet, like I am only cautiously healthy if I am cancer free. It helped to write that diary, the third in my cancer series. This morning we went to the kick off for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life and I shared my cancer story. Mid way through I chocked up and I couldn't remember what else I wanted to share. I agreed to do it because I thought this too might help me to move on. What it is I am trying to hold to I am not sure. But, the bottom line is my body has no more cancer in it, at least as far as medical science can tell.

" "Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass... it is about learning to dance in the rain." ~ Vivanne Grenne "

[ Parent ]
What you are trying to hold on to? (2.00 / 4)
Good question. I have no direct personal experience with cancer: my people have "bad blood" and deal with strokes and heart attacks. I would guess that surviving something gives you a different perspective on life and it may be difficult to let go of your connection to that life changing experience, even after you have moved past it physically.

It could also be that you are meant to keep writing about it because of what we, your friends, can learn from your experience. I love your writing and your way of connecting with people. I suspect that is what makes you so good at what you do.
