I Need YOUR Help Today, To Save A Life

Dear Friends,

My friend, Craig Dunbar, needs a kidney. His fistula, which is the port through whoch he receives his dialysis, is failing. Without a new kidney he will die. He lives here in Ottawa. He is a firefighter who has saved lives. Now he needs US to save his life. I will be writing other diaries about his fight, but today, I need YOUR help.

We are doing a Twitter trending campaign. If you have Twitter, please, please, please, at 5pm Eastern, Tweet the link to his facebook page
https://www.facebook.com/...
which has more information about his fight using the hashtag : #kidney4craig

Also, Don Cherry, those of you in Canada will know that name, has a son who has received a kidney transplant. We are trying to get him to mention Craig's fight on tonight's Coach's Corner. Please tweet the link to Craig's facebook page to: @coachscornerCBC
Getting Craig's mentioned on CBC on Coach's Corner would bring his fight to the attention of millions of Canadians.

Please, if you have the ability to donate, get tested. I will have much more information in the next diary I do on Craig and his fight.

Many of you know that my husband, Dan, died while on dialysis, so this fight is very personal for me. I couldn't save Dan's life, but together we CAN save Craig's. Please help, in any way you can.

    Bless you and thank you

    Love and Hugs,
        Heather

"Pin your money to your girdle and don't talk to strangers."  My Grandmom's advice when I went away to school.  I don't wear a girdle and have never met a stranger.  Sorry Grandmom!

Will do ! (2.00 / 5)
I will have a much more explanatory diary next week, and will be asking for a lot of help over the next while getting word out. We couldn't save Dan's life, but we CAN save Craig's.

                      Hugs,
                      Heather

How does one get tested? (2.00 / 4)
And can Americans do it for Canadians? How would that work re: health care expenses?

Thanks for asking. (2.00 / 5)
Americans can donate to Canadians. I am looking for a good link or links to explain everything with regards to the American/Canadian situation. I will be doing a big detailed post on Craig's fight this coming week and will include as many specifics about that that I can find.

Thank you! (2.00 / 4)
It would be great information to have.

Here is some information that will help. (2.00 / 4)
I will be contacting Ms Rada on Monday to ask her about the American/Canadian question. The Red Cross should be able to test your blood type for free.

         Heather

If You Would Like to Get Tested to See if You Can Donate your Kidney
By Catherine Grand in Kidney 4 Craig
Thank you!

First step: Obtain your blood type from your doctor.

Then: Please contact the Ottawa Hospital living donor coordinator, Mary Rada.

Her phone number is 613-738-8400 ext. 82778 and her email address is mrada@toh.on.ca.

If you are not a blood-type match for Craig but would still like to donate a kidney there is a way do so and get Craig a kidney through participating in the Living Donor Paired Exchange (LDPE) registry. Mary Rada (613-738-8400 ext. 82778, mrada@toh.on.ca) is also the contact for LDPE.

Paired exchange, at its simplest, is a program that registers incompatible pairs into a database with other incompatible donor/recipient pairs to hopefully create an opportunity for two recipients to receive kidneys from each other's living donor. Read more here:

Thank you again!

Excellent. (2.00 / 4)
Thank you for that information.

It looks like all the participating hospitals on that list are Canadian at this time, however.

Thank YOU for asking ! (2.00 / 3)
Yes, the hospitals on that list are Canadian, which I why I have to email her on Monday and ask about how the cross border thing works :)

I am so glad to have found you again :)

All the best to Craig and his family. (2.00 / 4)
Donna was beside herself when the hockey season started and she found out we get CBC and Coach's Corner on satellite down here (sh'es a Leafs fan, so you know she is an optimist :~). Will tweet for you and hope we see Grapes put the word out.

Bless you !

I'm from Vancouver, so you can imagine the frustration of being a Canucks fan.  We are not going to talk about the outrageous people who rioted :(

I'm a Yank who's lived thrice in Canada, (2.00 / 4)
Donna took me to my first hockey (or any sport) game in the 80's and if I'm not mistaken they haven't won a game since (well, effectively). Like all Leafs fans I carry it like a cross...

We were downtown Toronto for both Blue Jays world series wins. A million people on the streets partying like wild and not a single window broken. The Vancouver thing (which we aren't talking about, it only sounds that way ;~) was written up thoughtfully somewhere. It was a lot of suburbanite kids who came into the Big City and did things they wouldn't do in their own neighborhood.

Have good friends in Renfrew I need to go see next time I am in Ottawa. We should try to have a Moose coffee moment next time I am in town.

We should definitely have a moose coffee the next time you are in town :) (1.33 / 3)
LOL re they haven't won since.

It was so weird, the riot, because we had just finished having the Olympics and there were massive crowds downtown every day and everyone was happy and peaceful and dancing and singing, people of all ages and races and faiths and orientations and the like, and from all over the Lower Mainland and all over the country and the world, and it was really a big happy party. We were all shocked when then got violent after the game months later.

           Hugs,
           Heather
