Moose-A-Thon

Given my background in public radio - working at listener supported radio stations, I got used to doing on air fund-raising drives which we called Marathons.

But since this is not public radio, and we are here at the Moose, I figgered I'd dub this a mini Moose-a-thon.

DeniseVelez :: Moose-A-Thon

Nobody gets paid here.

Well, not in money. We earn Moosie enjoyment.

Photobucket

Since I'm the last of the big time spenders (and poor) I am kicking this off with a big donation of 10 bucks.

Yup. It won't break my budget.

I will delay my chocolate cravings and give up two chocolate moose this week.

Photobucket

So why am I posting this?

The Moose is a place where we are gathered to enjoy each others company, express ideas, and political thoughts. You already know that cause you are here.

But it really isn't free. It has a teeny tiny budget to pay for web hosting space every month, and those of us who hang around here kick in a few bucks to keep it running. When we remember.  Or get nudged.

I came here originally to find a place that was not MyDD. There were Elder Moose on that website, who recognized my frustration during the primary wars and they threw me a life line.

I came.  I stayed.

I also went to DKos, and am still there. DKos is sort of like Grand Central Station in NYC (to me), except for the Black Kos front porch which is cozier.

The Moose reminds me of a pond here upstate NY where I live...slower paced, more time to share ideas and less noise and frantic activity.

Photobucket

So if you like the Moosey ambiance, and are planning on staying around, if you have some moola to spare, click the button on the right side of the page that says "Donate".

Y'all can take this as a nudge.

We'll take 5 bucks (2.00 / 47)
or whatever you can afford.

And if you don't have any money that's fine too.

We're easy.

[ Parent ]
only on Tuesdays (2.00 / 20)
I don't do Friday - I just go in to support comments.

I'd be willing to cross-post my Sunday pieces here about an hour or two after they go up, I have a hard time managing comments in two places at once.

I'm in for $55.74 (2.00 / 34)
which is what the current price of two shares of Microsoft stock would cost.

Now Moose Mgt. can go to the next shareholder's meeting, tell everyone that they own multiple shares of Microsoft stock, and demand an Internet Explorer fix for The Motley Moose!

Thanks DeniseVelez, I second your thoughts and appreciation of this fine establishment.

wow! Thank you (2.00 / 29)
that's a lotta chocolate moose.

we have a lovely place in the back pasture (2.00 / 27)

In with a few fins.

The Moose smiles upon you!

Looking at a way of doing that.... (2.00 / 25)
...without screwing up the visual appearance of the site. Been nearly 5 years since I ventured under the CSS hood. Design is my thing, coding not so much.

Might wait for Blasky to try turning off the ads.

[ Parent ]
Better you than me :) (2.00 / 27)
I am clueless about code and what makes the web run.

It's enough for me to figger out how to type and post.

But one thing I have always loved about Moose is how it looks.

I don't know if I'm the only one but it is visually soothing for me.

[ Parent ]
Ha! (2.00 / 25)
I hope you knew I was only channeling ErrinF who famously said something about her account in all uppercase letters to the orange site overlords.

Whenever you get around to it will be fine. When I used to manage the tech on a Wordpress site, it was easy to turn off the ads because they were all in widgets. I am going to guess it is more difficult to do in this platform (which I love, btw).

Words have meaning. Our words will reflect what is in our souls.

[ Parent ]
Well the problem is with the bloxes... (2.00 / 24)
They contain all the elements: you can turn them on and off for front page or diary pages.... in THEORY.

Danger is, because there's no undo, they got lost for good and all their coding.

The p***artist formerly known as 'Brit'

[ Parent ]
Step back, technomeese working on it. (2.00 / 25)
you can "idle" bloxes, which lets you undo. Let me play with it a bit before you do anything drastic.

I will keep my fingers off the knobs until you confirm you are clear of the controls.

John Askren - "Never get into a pissing match with a skunk."

Ads seem to be idle on diary pages.... (2.00 / 23)
If that's so, worth informing them on Kysen's IE tech diary for testing.

The p***artist formerly known as 'Brit'

[ Parent ]
All clear (2.00 / 22)
I idled blog ads, and basically wanted to make the other ads ONLY appear on the front page, not the diary pages. Some bloxes have that option. Couldn't make it work with the ads.

Lol! (2.00 / 24)
But if Blasky gets his hands under the bonnet, and starts tinkling with the design, we'll end up being blinded by a radiant smile and a sudden withering flash of optimism; a BLASKAPOCALYSE so severe, our cheeks will ache for weeks, and we'll all end up braiding each others hair. There are some things worse than the red button...

The p***artist formerly known as 'Brit'

[ Parent ]
Speaking of messing about under the bonnet... (2.00 / 22)
...something weird just happened to me. In the far right column, my "Menu" links have suddenly dropped to the bottom of the column, below "Blog Roll" and "Moose With Blogs." Now I have to scroll down to get to "Your Comments" instead of having that link right up top. Is this just me??

Nope. Same problem. (2.00 / 15)
Can you idle the "+ Share" button? That is the only other thing that I can see that is NOT on the new page created by a right-click on date/time stamp, open in new tab.

The "+ Share" button has code in it from http://www.addthis.com. If something changed there, again, it would be something you would have no control over.

The key is: what is on the diary page that is NOT on the page created when you do a right-click, open in new tab? One works and the other doesn't.

Words have meaning. Our words will reflect what is in our souls.

I love to lurk this place, even though I'm far to the right of most of the folk here. Better dialogue and more accepting; even posting a comment out of line with the consensus at most of the places I used to hang, like RedState and such, is an instaban. Here, ya'll may not agree with me, but damn it, we can still have a conversation.

Rage - that's one of the things I love about (2.00 / 27)
the Moose - that left, center, right - we can talk here.

It makes Moose very special.

PS - this reminds me of my two favourite (2.00 / 13)
Amazon Book review sites. Real books - spoof reviews. Exhibit One:
http://www.amazon.com/Microwav...

Alone in my dark apartment, having worn my 3 Wolf Moon T-Shirt as well for countless weeks, found this book to be my bible. I sit at my dining room table, playing World of Warcraft night after night, sobbing silently for want of notice by another human being. Pizza boxes piling up, chinese food leftovers filling my fridge, I was beginning to run out of options. I recently lost my job as a Custodial Consultant for sniffing the amonia in the utility closet. My funding for my gourmet meals from such world reknown chefs as Boyardi and Uncle Ben had begun running low. Stumbling in a drunken daze through the local bookstore, my elbow carelessly knocked a book onto the floor as I turned a corner. As I peered down, I saw the title, "Microwave Cooking for One."

Or the more recent How to Avoid Huge Ships
http://www.amazon.com/gp/produ...

I bought How to Avoid Huge Ships as a companion to Captain Trimmer's other excellent titles: How to Avoid a Train, and How to Avoid the Empire State Building. These books are fast paced, well written and the hard won knowledge found in them is as inspirational as it is informational. After reading them I haven't been hit by anything bigger than a diesel bus. Thanks captain!

Also wanted to give heartfelt thanks to all those, "new" moose and "old," who are contributing right now. Especially since I can't give again for a while, due to... uhhhhh, a LOT of things actually. I was out of town for a bit, and dealing with some vet problems too, though not as heartbreaking as Denise's.  :(

can you shoot the Moose an email so we can respond with the info? (2.00 / 5)
Then we'll make a matching donation to paypal.

If that works for you.

And thank you!
