Thank You!

by: HappyinVT

The Moose would like to give a huge "Thank You!" to all the overwhelmingly generous donations received during our Moose-a-thon. Hugs and Moose kisses to everyone who helped us keep the lights on for awhile (a long while if we are careful) and, maybe, hire some professional mental tech help (for when we aren't careful).

HappyinVT :: Thank You!

One of the necessary evils of blogging is sometimes having to ask for a bit of financial aid.  (I was going to use "bleg" but wiki tells me John Derbyshire lays claim to coining the term.  Blech!  The term also shows up in Urban Dictionary, but you'll have to look that up for yourself).

Anyhoo, as Denise mentioned, our overhead is low, but we still need to pay the rent and such.  And thanks to your overwhelming generosity, the Moose raised:

...

$820.00! $1020.00!!

That's US dollars.  Not Moose dollars!

Moosemoneyclip2PhotobucketMooseMoney2

Those dollars go solely towards Moose upkeep (domain name, Soapblox , and emergency tech support). Every penny will be used to keep the Moose conversation flowing. Enough was raised today that we can now also be Ad-Free, something that all Moose can cheer about!

(Sorry, boys, that means no more Russian dating services.)

That's an overwhelming amount to longtime Moose who came here at various times in 2008 looking for a drama-free zone and found a home away from home.  Where I, for one, can say those things that I cannot say in real life.  Where, yes, we can disagree without being disagreeable, and we are held accountable for our words.

We can assure you that the funds will be kept in a VERY safe place.

MooseBank2

On behalf of all the Moose, the elders and the ... uh ... calves ... thank you so much for helping us stay around for a while longer.

ThankyouPurple2

He returns, not as Gandalf the Grey, but Gandalf the White

It's obvious what he's been up to:

"Through Fire... and Water. From the lowest dungeon to the highest peak, I fought with the Balrog of Morgoth....
...Until at last I threw down my enemy and smote his ruin upon the mountainside.

Darkness took me and I strayed out of thought and time; the stars wheeled overhead and every day was as long as a life age of the Earth... but it was not the end. I felt life in me again.

I've been sent back until my task is done. ...I am Gandalf the White and I come back to you now, at the turn of the tide."

Everybody, this is Gandalf. Gandalf, (gestures at gathered multitudes) this is everybody.

For those of you who have not met John, he is as much and in many ways more the eldest and most prominent Moose. John hosted the initial conversation that led to all this in a secret Moose Cave hidden behind a waterfall (the location of which is known only to John and - for mysterious reasons - Jarkar Ruutu), and carved the Moose by hand out of purest electrons.

Problem seems to be solved. (2.00 / 28)
Soapblox has added sharing for facebook and twitter. I don't really see any need to add more scripting to the site to share to less well-known sites. If other users feel the need for an additional share button we can try the one from ShareThis or AddToAny.

I have noticed another problem in IE. Some pages load very slowly and then give a script error. Not sure what is causing that problem. Is anyone else having the same problem?

This is not a recession. It's a robbery.

so good to see John and that he fixed (2.00 / 16)
the IE problem. It had to be terribly frustrating for people who can't use an alternative.

I have never understood why some places don't allow alternative browsers.

I have to use IE in class at school because our system won't let Firefox play youtube videos and I use them in class.

So while I wait for the dogs to come back from doing the do here's some music to celebrate

As a network administrator, I can tell you that every piece of software on a networked computer has to be carefully vetted. (2.00 / 15)
When people start adding all sorts of programs it adds tremendously to the overhead of maintaining a network. Internet Explorer security patches are pushed automatically as part of the Microsoft Windows update environment. Firefox (and Chrome) patches are not (they are optional).

Even though IE is no longer forced on users as their only browser it is still an integral part of the operating system (some things can only be done in the IE browser).

That said, I now allow my users to install Firefox but not Chrome. Chrome for Windows has some pretty serious bugs and because Google does not consider it a high priority to run well on Windows, that becomes a problem.

So that's why some places choose to only allow one browser!

Words have meaning. Our words will reflect what is in our souls.

[ Parent ]
I always wondered why (2.00 / 10)
anyone would use IE, let alone big companies and school districts (like ours).  So if ff or chrome started offering an automatic version for patches, would more people start using it for large networks? I wonder why they haven't done so already. I had no idea chrome was buggy, I have't used Anyang else for years! What do you think about dolphin? My brother swears by it, and I have it on my phone, but I don't browse much so I can't really tell what I think. :)

[ Parent ]
*anything (2.00 / 11)
Damn ipad!

Shake it like a Polaroid picture.

[ Parent ]
Unfortunately, just pushing the updates is not enough. (1.87 / 15)
For example, Firefox pushes a new update every week or so that users can have automatically updated. But some of those updates break things! What I do for Internet Explorer is I let the updates "age" a bit before I let my users get them (yes, I have control over this ... I am the all powerful NetAdmin!!). With Firefox being outside of the Microsoft update environment though, I don't have control except via the anti-malware software which stops the bad things that a risky Internet connection can allow in.

It is the difference between a business browser (Internet Explorer) and a home user browser (Firefox or Chrome).

I use Firefox as my blogging browser because IE chokes on some news sites, most blogs, Facebook ... pretty much everything I use for my "fun" Internets. But I use Internet Explorer for secure transactions and client connections.

Words have meaning. Our words will reflect what is in our souls.

[ Parent ]
On industrial ("ICS") networks this is infinitely more of a problem. (2.00 / 11)
An update that causes a glitch in a system that controls whether a valve opens or not can be infinitely worse than a server rebooting.

John Askren - "Never get into a pissing match with a skunk."

[ Parent ]
I was told to switch over to Opera (2.00 / 7)
when I couldn't get Firefox to allow me to download Adobe PDF files. Which is necessary for me because all the crochet/knitting/sewing patterns I sell online are in a PDF format. I've had to go to Chrome to download or upload PDF files. I have Opera ready to install, I'm just a little wary of browsers I don't know a lot about.

For PDF files... (2.00 / 7)
Download/use:

It is free and I have used it for years now with nary a problem. It is also MUCH (much much much) faster than Adobe and uses less 'juice' to run.

Google hates Microsoft (and probably vice versa). (2.00 / 9)
I prefer to stay out of the way while they use their browsers and operating systems to fight with each other.

I have Chrome on one of my test computers (because I test stuff!!) and once every 4 or 5 days, some kind of update process it runs freezes the computer and it needs to be powered off completely to be restarted. Sigh.

Fortunately it is a test computer but I can imagine the phone calls I would get if that was happening on a computer people were trying to get stuff done on.

This is one time when the nannies in your IT department are saving you!! That is not always the case, btw. Sometimes people like me also resist change. ;)

Words have meaning. Our words will reflect what is in our souls.

[ Parent ]
I actually like Chrome because it feels quicker and lighter (2.00 / 10)
...than firefox, and the synching between devices, and with google mail and docs is more seamless.

The big problem with Chrome is lack of shockwave compatibility. Shockwave is forever freezing up in Chrome

Otherwise, I prefer it.

The p***artist formerly known as 'Brit'

[ Parent ]
My Android phone uses a built-in Chrome browser since Android is Google. (2.00 / 11)
It is a fine browser there because it is not fighting with a Windows environment.

And Firefox for Android is awful ... it is too fat for a thin client.

Words have meaning. Our words will reflect what is in our souls.

[ Parent ]
Ha! used to use Chrome for Shockwave but switched to Firefox for just that reason. (2.00 / 12)
