JanF :: Tuesday Morning Herd Check-in and Open Thread for the Moosekins
If you are new to the Moose, Kysen left a Moose Welcome Mat (Part Deux) so, please, wipe your feet before you walk in the front door start posting.

The important stuff to get you started:
- Comments do not Auto-refresh. Click the refresh/reload on your tab to see new ones.
- To check for replies to your comments, click the "My Comments" link in the right-hand column (or go to "My Moose"). Comments will be listed and a link to Recent Replies will be shown. (Note: Tending comments builds community)
- Ratings: Fierce means Thumbs Up, Fail means Thumbs Down, Meh means one of three things: I am unFailing you but I can't Fierce you, I am unFiercing after a mistaken Fierce, or Meh. Just Meh.
- If you Fail someone accidentally, it is no big deal. Meesely Mentor Chris Blask on "mojo":
"The Moose doesn't do "mojo" in a standard fashion. Credit is earned on a more amorphous social basis than traditional blogoprofiling - more like real life."

(Some other commenting/posting/tending notes for newbies can be found in this past check-in and, of course, consult Meese Mehta for all your questions on meesely decorum.)

Here is a great link to have open in a tab: Motley Moose Recent Comments

Morning.... (2.00 / 30)
Absent of late on the Moose, preparing the new book for launch at the end of the week.

I wouldn't mind some Moose comments on the following pitch video. (Password 'Unbound')

http://vimeo.com/58828542

Whole website and sample chapters up soon: I wonder if I should post a diary about it? Might interest some Meese, on the other hand continual self promotion diaries are very irksome

What thinkest the Moozog?

The p***artist formerly known as 'Brit'

Ha! I think "preparing new book for launch" is a pretty good excuse. (2.00 / 27)
I will check the video after my early morning work. And there is nothing wrong with self-promotion ... isn't shameless self-promotion the very definition of blogging? ;)

All kidding aside, I would be very interested in seeing the diary.

Words have meaning. Our words will reflect what is in our souls.

[ Parent ]
Maybe we should have a virtual (2.00 / 16)
publication party. I'll bring something but not quite what Meese eat or drink. Will think of something.

[ Parent ]
I'm in! (2.00 / 17)
While not always a realtime party, the Moose has hosted some epic virtual bashes in its time.

Pick a time and place, all get together at once, and let loose.

We could get all mixed media about it, through in some skype, gotomeeting and other tools for those who want to perhaps get visual or other multicollaborative. I have a gotowebinar account that can host up to 100 Moose and maybe Peter could Do A Reading for us.

John Askren - "Never get into a pissing match with a skunk."

[ Parent ]
I ought to alert you though... (2.00 / 13)
This is my second Unbound book. Basically we launch the book six months before publication - the crowdfunding means you buy the book in advance and get your name in the back. Higher levels give you access to the research, writing process and even input in the final version. A final tier gives you a candelit dinner with the author and publishers...

The Murdoch book was not only crowd funded, but the research crowd sourced too. So it's a fun way of writing a book. You feel all the time you're part of a community

The p***artist formerly known as 'Brit'

[ Parent ]
It's OK, we don't need much reason for a party. (2.00 / 7)
You are more than enough. ;~)

John Askren - "Never get into a pissing match with a skunk."

[ Parent ]
Wow, you meese sure know how to throw (2.00 / 12)
a virtual bash! Will bring a case of virtual champagne and, to show that I have real class, a case of virtual Diet Coke.

[ Parent ]
Very cool video, please do a diary about this. (2.00 / 27)

Thanks Jan. Sadie is getting better but it's gonna take awhile. We (2.00 / 26)
need to review her meds today.  The low points of the day are the two times I have to give her a bunch of pills and two injections.  She srsly doesn't like that and I don't blame her.

Goofing off before going to work. (2.00 / 24)
I need to leave soon, but I am glad I checked in!

I will see my first kid for speech therapy at 8:00 am and then just keep on going from there.

There will be reports (evaluations, individualized education plans, etc.) to write, data to compile, filing to be done as well!

I have often wished my job was to simply see the kids and to provide consultation to parents and teachers. That's the fun part of the job :-)

Peace, Hope, Faith, Love

Zero outside right now (2.00 / 26)
and all is crispy. It will be a good day and stay inside to enjoy the fireplace.
While the rest of you are enjoying breakfast this morning, the poots and I shall enjoy dinner. I'm getting the impression that the poots are hungry(and they out number me).

According to the article "the GIF was first developed by a CompuServe engineer in 1987". Yikes! CompuServe.

You download the file and then upload it into an approved photo sharing site, like Photobucket. (2.00 / 15)
Do a right-click, Save Image As and store it on your computer. Then upload it into Photobucket. From what I understand, Flickr can't be used for animations. You can store them there but they aren't animated.

A friend once showed her 4 year old granddaughter an animation and the little girl asked if the kitty cat waved even after she shut down her computer. Good question!! Maybe that's why Flickr won't allow them ... hogs bandwidth. ;)

THAT is a very cool GIF, btw. Sto-len.

Going up to near 30 today.  My two year old has a nasty cold and fights me wiping his nose with all his might.  We have a showing this am so ill start cleaning up once I finish this cup of coffee.  Have a great day!

Good morning. It is still cold here in NJ, and we had a bit more (2.00 / 23)
snow overnight. I am headed to the office for a faculty meeting. It is so nice not to be teaching evening classes this term.

It's snowing here in Saugerties NY (2.00 / 24)

Crazy day today. Was 32 degrees this morning heading to the mid 40's. Not sure what the temp is now.

They predicted snow last night but they were just teasing. We only get snow when there's a 20% chance, never when there's an 80-90% chance.

Happy Tuesday. At the end of today I'll be halfway through my 4 day week.

Good morning friendly Moose people (2.00 / 19)
it is a foggy and sticky 59 degrees here in beautiful Fort Worth, Texas this mornig with a high today to scare 70.

Hope everyone has as good a Tuesday as the world will allow.

Sounds like our forecast here in MS. (2.00 / 10)
It's also foggy and 59 - should get past 70, with a bit of drizzle.

Redbuds are in full "bloom", and the Japanese magnolias are close behind, so another freeze would mean they are toast. Hope it doesn't happen.

Little foggy in a few places but other than that, warm weather abounds. Thinking about doing a little gardening before the sun gets high, little ground prep for next month. Still thinking about that, spinning wheel is calling my name at the moment.

From the "Well this is just got interesting" file...A court in Texas has ruled the school funding system in Texas is unconstitutional and the state is going to have to put more into the kitty and depend less on home and property taxes. A group of schools, rich and poor, sued the state over the cuts made in the last lege session. Now it's on to the Texas Supreme Court. No telling how that will pan out.

But Perry wants his tax cut!! (2.00 / 14)
Because we had a surplus for one year after gutting the already impoverished agencys. Anything to stop that moron from further ruining out state is a good thing.

[ Parent ]
Perry knows darned well that there is no way to return the surplus. (2.00 / 13)
There is no state income tax so no way to turn off withholding or return it to the folks who paid it. The surplus is from sales taxes.

He gets to look all teapartyish by declaring he wants to do it but then gets to keep the surplus to fund things that even he knows need to be funded.

Words have meaning. Our words will reflect what is in our souls.

[ Parent ]
It is also from oil and gas revenues..... (2.00 / 13)
Which is raising a bunch of eyebrows on the Dems side...Why was that bit of info left out of the last budget? So the surplus will wind up going to Perry's pet projects, he and the GOP will make deeper cuts into the social service programs and then we really will be in a world of hurt in Texas.

"A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle"...."We make a Living by what we get...We make a Life by what we give."

[ Parent ]
School funding is a battle that has raged for many years. I think (2.00 / 15)
it all started with a court fight over funding rich vs poor school districts in San Antonio and, as usual, the legislature always comes down on the rich districts side.

"I base most of my fashion sense on whether or not it itches"  -- Gilda Radner

[ Parent ]
This wasn't just about poor and rich districts.... (2.00 / 14)
This was poor and rich districts both filing suit...This is about property taxes going up again--and mostly to fund school districts and there are laws regarding how much a district can pay in property taxes..So it's going to be interesting to see how it all plays out.

"A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle"...."We make a Living by what we get...We make a Life by what we give."

[ Parent ]
I've been away from Texas too long to remember details of (2.00 / 14)
school financing.  It's always been a mess but I do remember the San Antonio case (from late 1980s, I think) which did revolve around how to resolve the disparity in how local districts were funded.  I seem to recall that the court came down on the side of the poor districts but the legislature really didn't do anything to comply with the court ruling.  It sound like the current situation is different.  Be assured that school financing will always be a Texas-sized mess!

"I base most of my fashion sense on whether or not it itches"  -- Gilda Radner

[ Parent ]
You are absolutely right... (2.00 / 13)
School funding in Texas has a long, ugly and often weird history. The Robin Hood plan, the one the court sided with is still technically in use. However, the wealthy districts are finding ways to fight that all the time.

This thing has so much history and so many twists turns that there are actually books dedicated to nothing but school funding in Texas and the issues there of--Not fun reading, but definitely enlightening.

Most of my Dem friends are expecting a push for vouchers and/or more charter schools leading the way for privatization. Joy. After the food stamp privatization debacle you'd think Perry and company might learned a few things, I think not.

"A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle"...."We make a Living by what we get...We make a Life by what we give."

[ Parent ]
Perry won't learn a thing. Bush was a lousy governor but when (2.00 / 12)
he was in office the Lt. Gov. still was the one with power.  Perry changed that and not to the benefit of Texas.  I think if Greg Abbott runs and wins, he will be an even worse governor than Perry.

"I base most of my fashion sense on whether or not it itches"  -- Gilda Radner

[ Parent ]
Perry gained control by way of his board and committee appointees. (2.00 / 9)
The Texas constitution still grants more power to the Lt. governor than the governor. However, Texas is not actually governed by Perry or Dewhurst--They are definitely at the top of the food chain, but the state is governed by a series of boards of committees. Which is why the office of Land Commissioner is darn powerful in Texas. There are elected officials on some of the boards, and others are appointed by the governor.

Perry has managed to pull a lot of control by getting rid of people on the boards hindering his agenda through appointing his cronies to chair boards or committees.

Greg Abbott will be a nightmare for this state. He's exceedingly arrogant and definitely incompetent. When the Attorney General of Texas has to hire outside law firms to represent Texas in Washington DC. that should say plenty about his competency.

"A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle"...."We make a Living by what we get...We make a Life by what we give."

Houston's still a great place, pittiepat (2.00 / 8)
Texas politics are a mess, but I hold out hope that the continuing massive influx of people from other parts of the country and other countries will continue to drive our changing demographics. I've spent 5 years here as a New England ex pat, and it's been an interesting time, to say the least.

Perennials cut back for the winter are showing fresh growth. I appreciate their tenacity, but wonder about this unusually warm winter.

In unrelated news, my former boss who laid me off last June has been inviting me - more than once - to connect with her on LinkedIn. I have over 250 connections, but they are all people that I like, respect, admire, work well with, or otherwise feel add something positive. She just does not make the cut.

Still, it might be time for some psy-ops. Any advice?? I know that the company is on a massive hiring/rehiring binge after many people were laid off, and many more left voluntarily. If I think of putting my foot back into that leg-hold trap, someone PLEASE talk me down!

Howdy, peeps. (2.00 / 14)
Boring weather here this morning. Grey and cool, like most mornings. I do see a thin sliver of pinky-blue sky far off to the north, somewhere above Marin or Sonoma. No actual fog here, though, which isn't surprising as fog is more of a summer thing.

Tomorrow I spend three hours in a class at the hospital preparatory to surgery at the end of the month. I hope it's worth rousing myself out of the house at 8AM.

To make up for that, on Friday I go to see Royal Treasures from the Louvre at the Legion of Honor Museum. Looks like a great way to end the week! :-)

Chicago is a cloudy 22 (2.00 / 12)
It's going up into the low 30's today, and looks like we're going to be riding the mid-30's for the rest of the week. There's a nice coating of snow on the ground finally, but I supposed it's going to turn into dirty slush pretty soon.

We're heading to Steamboat CO next week to ski - they have plenty of snow right now, and I'm hoping for some fresh powder upon our arrival.

Rained from 5 AM until about 6:10 AM this morning - I know (2.00 / 12)
because I was awake all damned night here in Blount County , Alabama. NE of The Tragic City. Don't know temp , but warmer than usual , not gonna look & tell y'all because I'm sort of churlish this morning. It's a good mood for a curmudgeon , or at least fits. Did online IRS stuff last night - my first four - yay. Took twice as long as with form , pen , notepad & pencil , but I was talking to an interesting lady on the phone for most of the two hours. She is a retired paralegal , so was amused by my irritation with the process.I think she was pleased that she was so interesting to talk with that I wouldn't stop the lively exchange just for IRS . My refund came out to be just like it was last year and the year before - to the $1.

"COUNTY OFFICIALS TO TALK RUBBISH"- from 'Anguished English'

I did a week of geology in Blount County many years ago. (2.00 / 12)
Brought home about forty pounds of beautiful Cretaceous coal slabs with imprints of palm trunks and intricate fern leaves.

They went away somewhere (probably to the same place all of my Jefferson Airplane and Jimi Hendrix albums went) and I wish I still had them.

They were gorgeous...

I did a summer of it here - don't remember where cretaceous stuff is- (2.00 / 1)
from my back porch I can see Mississipian Pennsylvanain and the consequent Earth rape still going on. Crap coal becomes profitable that wasn't so 30 years ago ,so the bastards come back to devastate again. Canadians this time.

Stay dry Abra (2.00 / 6)
I can't talk two minutes about taxes without my eyes glazing over, let alone 2 hours.

that's funny (2.00 / 7)
I always called it the MEGO effect-my eyes glaze over-and wondered why folks didn't care more. It is not a patriotic duty to pay more than required but lots of people do. People often told me my work was boring which I thought very interesting since they didn't do it nor did they understand what was being done. But it involved numbers so it had to be boring!

none taken (2.00 / 6)
I didn't even take offense when people told me my work was boring since I knew better. Nothing that makes your brain work that hard can be boring, it may be stulifyingly uninteresting to all but a precious few but that's another thing.

Her conversation and mine had very little to do with my tax filing - (2.00 / 1)
:  > D - she happened to call while I was already messing with it. I made it a point to ask her no questions about it - it was really self - explanatory and simple.I've never understand why pepole freak about doing income tax.Get needed papers , use a calculator or notepad and pencil , just crankcrankcrank.I did it this time because I couldn't get forms at library or Post Office this year. Beats the hell out of the easiest hour in calculus class I ever had - now that's some terror with numbers.

Check in and outta here, in good mood (((FBI hostage+Regional))) (2.00 / 8)
A good day thanks to the FBI hostage unit, for Ethan, for Midland and very far behind for what this stellar work by the the FBI and local police does to LaPierre's credibility about gun hunkering down in gun culture land.

Notice that the face of the final successful operation was the regional FBI head who spoke to my Northeast ears with a deep south accent.

Smart optics, FBI!

Hey , Mooseippians , Monday , think it was had my first daffodil burst forth into (2.00 / 2)
blosson, tra - la. Tuesday night around 8:00 Tsula was making gestures 'n' back and forth with a deer and edge of yard - scene lit by my Christmas lights over back door , LOL! Deer would lower head and stare , then snap head back up suddenly ; Tsula, from safety of porch , was growling and had the hair on her back standing up.She was highly pissed that I caled her in  so let her out a few minutes later. No deer now , but she was enthralled by listening to the year's first spring peepers. Nasty look from her got me to agree to let her stay out on porch until she asked to come back in.Foggy out , a little cool , a one - brick night for propane fire in the wall. Good night for critter roamings.

Is that early? (2.00 / 2)
Report: Climate Change Causes Plants to Flower Historically Early
According to the study, published in the journal PLOS ONE Wednesday, dozens of flowering plants in Massachusetts and Wisconsin have gradually begun blooming earlier as average temperatures creep up. For example, the highbush blueberry plant flowered April 1, 2012-in the 1850s that plant normally flowered in mid May.

Here is how I interpreted it: (2.00 / 2)
- daffodils are blooming two or three weeks earlier than when you were a kid
- You are 40+ years old so when you were a kid was 25-30 years ago
- No Text in the comment area (which we kind of know on the moose because all comments are expanded).

How is that nonsensical?

Your interpretation is very good but about 15 years too generous to me. (2.00 / 2)
You might do very well with something like heiroglyphics.
