Make sure you let your peeps know where to find you!

JanF :: Wednesday Morning Herd Check-in and Open Thread for the Moosekins
If you are new to the Moose, Kysen left a Moose Welcome Mat (Part Deux) so, please, wipe your feet before you walk in the front door start posting.

The important stuff to get you started:
- Comments do not Auto-refresh. Click the refresh/reload on your tab to see new ones.
- To check for replies to your comments, click the "My Comments" link in the right-hand column (or go to "My Moose"). Comments will be listed and a link to Recent Replies will be shown. (Note: Tending comments builds community)
- Ratings: Fierce means Thumbs Up, Fail means Thumbs Down, Meh means one of three things: I am unFailing you but I can't Fierce you, I am unFiercing after a mistaken Fierce, or Meh. Just Meh.
- If you Fail someone accidentally, it is no big deal. Meesely Mentor Chris Blask on "mojo":
"The Moose doesn't do "mojo" in a standard fashion. Credit is earned on a more amorphous social basis than traditional blogoprofiling - more like real life."

(Some other commenting/posting/tending notes for newbies can be found in this past check-in and, of course, consult Meese Mehta for all your questions on meesely decorum.)

Here is a great link to have open in a tab: Motley Moose Recent Comments

This is pretty darned easy to remember ... the posting rules for a new diary:

I didn't either!! Well, I probably knew it deep down but I tend to forget things like that. :) (2.00 / 22)
When I got up it was 4 degrees so this is not a good sign although they say we will get up to 32 degrees today.

The house is cold and my feet have not warmed up. And I let my coffee get cold while I was tending other things. :(

[ Parent ]
cold feet and hands are the bane of my (2.00 / 22)
existence, though things got better with my feet when I took my student's suggestions and bought some Ugs.

These things? (2.00 / 20)
Images of Uggs

Hmmm. I imagine since they go up over your ankles a bit, they provide more warmth. I might have to try some. My slippers are getting a little threadbare ... I hate throwing stuff away and try to get every last mile out of my footwear.

[ Parent ]
Yup! They are ugly and very very warm (2.00 / 20)
I have boots, and also slippers.

Well, he is somewhat hobbled (hippled?) so it will not be too difficult to hold him down. (2.00 / 21)
Catching up with him today may be a challenge, though. I believe he told us that he will be off the grid this morning doing surgery training for his big day on February 26.

[ Parent ]
Maybe I shoudl have gotten an especially (2.00 / 20)
hot guy (in tap shoes and not much else)to do the holding down. Might have gotten Silky here sooner.

I don't plant them up here - they don't do well in this zone except as annuals.

In you everything sank (2.00 / 11)

You still flowered in songs, you still brike the currents.
Oh pit of debris, open and bitter well.

Pale blind diver, luckless slinger,
lost discoverer, in you everything sank!

It is the hour of departure, the hard cold hour
which the night fastens to all the timetables.

The rustling belt of the sea girdles the shore.
Cold stars heave up, black birds migrate.

Deserted like the wharves at dawn.
Only tremulous shadow twists in my hands.

Oh farther than everything. Oh farther than everything.

It is the hour of departure. Oh abandoned one!

- (excerpted) - Pablo Neruda

It's wednesday.... Thank goodness.  Two more days and its Saturday!

Snowing again in southern Germany. We had some yesterday, too. (2.00 / 20)
Going to be between 32 and 24° (nights) the next couple of days. Good thing I went to the store and stocked up Saturday, so I'm good for a week or two.

Poll Puts Steve King Atop GOP Senate Primary In Iowa
Rep. Steve King (R-IA) is the favorite among Iowa Republicans to run in next year's contest to replace retiring Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA), according to the latest survey from Democratic-leaning Public Policy Polling. The poll showed 41 percent of usual GOP primary voters in the state identifying King as their preferred candidate over three other Republicans

This is the type of guy that Karl Rove is warning about. He would be crushed in a general election matchup with former Gov. Tom Vilsack (D). But it would be one ugly contest.

This is increasingly a problem for Republicans:

While 63 percent of Republicans in Iowa have a favorable opinion of King, only 32 percent of all registered voters feel the same way.

They and their candidates are out of the mainstream. Their coalition is shrinking and they have no way to get any feedback because they are stuck in their right-wing echo chamber.

'Monopoly' iron token is out, cat is in with fan vote
The Monopoly iron is going off to that giant linen closet in the sky.

The token, a staple of the Hasbro board game since the 1930s, is being retired after only garnering 8% of fan votes in a "Save Your Token" campaign. The Scottie dog was the clear choice for fans and game players from 185 countries, getting 29% of the vote.

Probably most people did not even recognize what the "iron" token was depicting. When was the last time you used an iron?

[ Parent ]
I think I used to choose the Scottie dog when I could. (2.00 / 11)
It seemed that if you were running around the game board, legs would be handy. The hat was a nice non-judgemental game token. There was a cannon at some point but I don't see it on the current list.

Words have meaning. Our words will reflect what is in our souls.

Morning all y'all (2.00 / 15)
Just testing links and pics here, if you don't mind. Sitting in the shop, putting off doing the next project. I lost my sourdough starter for pizza dough (too cold in the kitchen, gonna have to start another one soon as it warms up here. I make a breakfast pizza, too...3 cheeses, 3 sunnysideup eggs. Dipping the crust into the yolks is heaven. mmm, I must be hungry.

Wut? (2.00 / 9)
Morning pizza? What a great idea.

The pizza in the picture looks fantastic. Love the bunched up crust around the egde with a little char on it.

[ Parent ]
It's pretty hard to do in a home oven (2.00 / 6)
Someday I might have enough money to build a pizza oven outside, but on SS, probably not...lol
You need to crank it up as high as it will go. Use a stone, and line with tiles or bricks. Heat them for 1 1/2 hrs before cooking.
A good neopolitan pizza oven has to get to 800-1000 degrees. It only takes 30 seconds to cook the pizza at that heat. It takes 3-4 minutes in my home oven, so not so much charring, and a slightly harder dough.

[ Parent ]
off to the medical school in just a few minutes (2.00 / 16)
i despise being a patient!

also, i can't help but know that my disease is quite likely conquerable, or at least more manageable however, no one stands to make any money to cure it.  they do stand to make lots of money keeping it chronic.

sound cynical?  it is.  i know how medicine works, i practiced among physicians for an awfully long time.  granted, my patients were dead, but i always wondered, of those who died of disease, why, in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, more couldn't have been done to stop the progression of some of the diseases. researchers aren't working on cures much anymore, they're working on glitzy treatments.

i'll try to stop by to drop fierces on everyone later.  now i gotta get on that horrid freeway to dallas.

you all have a wonderful day.  don't think about me please.  who wants to be depressed thinking about being poked, prodded and tested at a hospital anyway?  LOL  HUGS everyone.
