Make sure you let your peeps know where to find you!

JanF :: Tuesday Morning Check-in: Grazings and Greetings of the Moose Folk
If you are new to the Moose, Kysen left a Moose Welcome Mat (Part Deux) so, please, wipe your feet before you walk in the front door start posting.

The important stuff to get you started:
- Comments do not Auto-refresh. Click the refresh/reload on your tab to see new ones.
- To check for replies to your comments, click the "My Comments" link in the right-hand column (or go to "My Moose"). Comments will be listed and a link to Recent Replies will be shown. (Note: Tending comments builds community)
- Ratings: Fierce means Thumbs Up, Fail means Thumbs Down, Meh means one of three things: I am unFailing you but I can't Fierce you, I am unFiercing after a mistaken Fierce, or Meh. Just Meh.
- Ratings don't bestow mojo, online behaviour does.
- Only click Post once for comments. When a diary's comment thread gets longer, it takes a bit to reload and the comment may not display as quickly. Clicking the Post button twice posts the comment twice. (h/t Khloe)
- When creating a new diary, remember to choose the Draft option (near the bottom) while you are working on it. Choose the Public option when you want to publish it. (h/t Khloe)

(Some other commenting/posting/tending notes for newbies can be found in this past check-in and, of course, consult Meese Mehta for all your questions on meesely decorum.)

Here is a great link to have open in a tab: Motley Moose Recent Comments

22 degrees in Madison WI (2.00 / 20)

Happy Fat Tuesday everyone! How many beads have you gotten so far? (2.00 / 18)
30 degrees and all is melting.

This is pretty early for Mardi Gras, isn't it? (2.00 / 18)
Some people have probably not recovered from their New Years Eve hangovers yet.

Words have meaning. Our words will reflect what is in our souls.

[ Parent ]
Will you be treating yourself to a (2.00 / 16)
paczki today? The polish half(my dominate half, if you hadn't noticed) of me has expectations. I can't decide between lemon or raspberry. The polish half says that they have fruit in them so they must be healthy..... right?

[ Parent ]
Yes!! The fruit makes them healthy. But then again, they say dark chocolate is good for you. (2.00 / 17)
I am a little leery of food that tells you how to pronounce it. Sounds kinda' furrin.

I would have a difficult time choosing between lemon and raspberry and would probably eat both to reduce stress.

Words have meaning. Our words will reflect what is in our souls.

[ Parent ]
With each one having (2.00 / 16)
600 to 1000 calories, one is probably too much for me. But it's once a year.
I remember my Busha making them each year. I never learned her recipe, though. Probably for the best......

I can't have both? (2.00 / 17)

[ Parent ]
Of course (2.00 / 17)
One for each hand!

[ Parent ]
That dear sweet pootiie looks as though (2.00 / 15)
he got his Ash Wednesday ashes and has decided to give up cheeseburgers and tuna for Lent!

[ Parent ]
I'd vote for raspberry, but... (2.00 / 12)
...lemon would also be nice. BTW, I knew nothing about Polish culture until I read Michener. Then I fell in love with that country. :-)

There are, in every age, new errors to be rectified, and new prejudices to be opposed. ~Samuel Johnson (1709-1784)

[ Parent ]
I am leaning raspberry but I am still hoping for both because it is difficult to pass up lemon anythings. (2.00 / 12)

Words have meaning. Our words will reflect what is in our souls.

[ Parent ]
See, that's how I am... (2.00 / 12)
...about all things raspberry. When I first began exploring various kinds of alcohol and learned there was such a thing as Chambord I thought I'd died and gone to Heaven. :-)

wearing them and won't share.

[ Parent ]
OK, this atheist Jew has a question (2.00 / 17)
why pancakes on Fat Tuesday? Other than that pancakes can make you fat.

And why "Fat" and also "Shrove" ?

"Most people worry about their own bellies and other people's souls when we all ought to worry about our own souls and others' bellies" Israel Salanter

It is the last day before the penitential season of Lent. (2.00 / 18)
You are supposed to have a hearth breakfast with eggs butter, and sugar.

[ Parent ]
That makes sense! Thanks! (2.00 / 18)
We Jews manage to confine our penitential periods to one day at a time, and we eat hearty afterward (break the fast can be a lot of food after Yom Kippur).

"Most people worry about their own bellies and other people's souls when we all ought to worry about our own souls and others' bellies" Israel Salanter

[ Parent ]
hearth, as in made on a hearth/fire place? And why these ingredients? (2.00 / 11)
in a pot? And is it the materials that matter? especially sugar being a luxury item, for many; butter and eggs, for those peasants without a cow/chickens---

I get it's not meat or fish, and thus for the Church not a festival food, but that is the limit of my knowledge of Christian feast/fast traditions.

And was it everywhere the same in the Western Church?

and am I getting too weedy for a moosey morning?

Anyway, hi from schools still closed Metro Boston.

[ Parent ]
"Hearth" is probably "hearty" (2.00 / 7)
In the stricter observances, the Lenten fast also excluded all animal products (the Orthodox still keep vegan fasts), so making pancakes was an easy and tasty way to use up the eggs and butter.

[ Parent ]
Good morning, everyone. (2.00 / 18)
Most of our snow has melted. WOOT. I hate snow.

We are supposed to get more tomorrow (2.00 / 18)
ick.

Maybe I will write a poem about it.

Happy Fat Tuesday Moose! Atticus is doing lap duty this (2.00 / 16)
rainy 58 degree morning in Wilmington.  He is busily making biscuits on my lap, I was hoping for brioche.  :)

"Pin your money to your girdle and don't talk to strangers."  My Grandmom's advice when I went away to school.  I don't wear a girdle and have never met a stranger.  Sorry Grandmom!

Good morning, all., Will be watching (2.00 / 14)
the State of the Union tonight. Wonder if the Republicans will behave themselves.

Wonder if (2.00 / 16)
Ted Nugent will behave himself. I almost hope he doesn't because the total implosion that's going on right now is almost funny - or would be if this weren't our country at stake.

Enduring security and lasting peace do not require perpetual war.

Barack Obama 1/21/2013

[ Parent ]
The right-wing has a history of disrespecting this president at his State of the Union Addresses. (2.00 / 15)
Why would they refrain from bringing someone who said he wanted to kill the president into the house chamber to watch the president give a speech?

Words have meaning. Our words will reflect what is in our souls.

[ Parent ]
And that includes Alito., (2.00 / 14)

[ Parent ]
Yup, Alito ... Joe Wilson ... (2.00 / 13)
The disrespect is epic.

Words have meaning. Our words will reflect what is in our souls.

[ Parent ]
Ummmm (2.00 / 15)
'scuse me, but doesn't the Secret Service have something to say about it? If a guy like this were being snuck in instead of publicized, wouldn't they find out and say No Way?

Let there be light. Then let there be a cat, a cocktail, and a good book.

[ Parent ]
If you're famous... (2.00 / 14)
...then you are assumed to be a Cultural Icon and not a Security Threat. We have become a nation of fame whores and starf%#kers. ;-)

There are, in every age, new errors to be rectified, and new prejudices to be opposed. ~Samuel Johnson (1709-1784)

[ Parent ]
FWIW, I think they avoid giving RW first amendment cases and heroes (2.00 / 8)
when the threat comes from a self-promoting celebrity who would only profit from any limitation on his actitivites and/or as in the Westboro Church, use it for a First Amendment case.

Moreover, he is an NRA Board member, with all their lawyers at his disposal, just itching to use the First amendment to protect pro-gun talk.

The US Secret Service had a sit down with him that probably gave him a sense of where the limits are when talking about the President....

[ Parent ]
You're right, I hadn't thought of that n/t (1.67 / 6)

Let there be light. Then let there be a cat, a cocktail, and a good book.

[ Parent ]
Weedy info: 1. History2. agreement on respect ,112th; 113? 3.security (2.00 / 9)
1. RW disrespect History really goes back to Joe Lewis, '09, not before. Alito and other RW SCOTUS justices argue separation of branches make it improper for them to attend, unlike Inauguration, where Chief Justice installs President. So it is a principled disrespect. Did he attend Bush SoTU? Google will let you know.

2. Post Lewis 112th, gentlemen and ladie's agreement that Republicans would not be obviously disrespectful  [for ex. flagrant tweeting] or show obvious disinterest with their copies of the speech]; in 2011, in honor of Rep. Giffords, seating was bi-partisan [suggested by one of the Sens. Udall, IIRC]. 113th, IMHO Speaker's weaker control over caucus [failure Hastert rule, his own election revolt] and the open invite to Nugent to hold media event during the Rubio response does not bode well for agreement.

3. Security/Nugent. All SoTUS post 9/11 are Special National Security Events, just like THE SUPER BOWL. Inspiring, no?
Means that the US Secret Service is in charge of Security. Period. Access to Hill, Capitol, Chamber, even DC airspace. If they want to keep Nugent's private plane from entering wider DC/BWI air space, and from there on down, they likely can.

Why do I know these things..... because the MSM INFURIATES ME ON THE NUGENT THING AND YES I AM YELLING AT THEM. why, see next post.

[ Parent ]
But first a face palm. Joe Wilson, not Lewis. reason for confusion... (2.00 / 8)
..the forthright condemnation of Wilson by Rep. John Lewis of GA in an article from The Hill meant both names were in the same google snippet and in my short term memory and yes, Jan, I forgot the [] trick so the embed will go awry....the hill.com on 9/10/09 is your ticket.

[ Parent ]
I could be wrong but I think I remember (2.00 / 5)
Alito mouthing "not true" at the SOTU in 2010. It was shocking to me.

[ Parent ]
He did. It was disgusting but quite in line with what passes for right-wing civility. (2.00 / 6)
The Republicans don't respect President Obama. End of Message.

Words have meaning. Our words will reflect what is in our souls.

[ Parent ]
Forgot that one. It's Alito who says uncivil things, it's Thomas who (2.00 / 4)
...doesn't come....

Which is from an old Italian joke reflecting the North/Milan/industrial and industrious, South/Rome not so much cultural difference.

An important Milanese businessman comes to Rome to see an important civil servant. He arrives in the afternoon after the long lunch break to find no one in the ministry. He says to the doorkeeper, doesn't anyone work here? The door keeper says:

It's in the morning that they don't work. In the afternoon, they don't come.

[ Parent ]
Is it to rude to suggest that should the President will say something (2.00 / 13)
(and surely he will) that'll make old Ted poop himself?  Nugent knows how to do that...

Weedy answer, beg to disagree. ThinkProgress all over it. (2.00 / 4)
Weedy answer, infuriated with everyone.

The only evidence that Nugent is coming is from the honorable member from Texas and Nugent himself. all the main news sources went from the invitation announcement to the presumption of his attendance.

alone, Think Progress sought confirmation from the US Secret Service which has this answer:

and likely,
no embed (or half a one)
and
no more posting moosekins for today.

http://thinkprogress.org/polit...

[ Parent ]
That was incomprehensible, BSRH being James Joyce. Translation. (2.00 / 3)
Weedy answer=there is none.
Weedy one would be about who is in charge of what in SoTU, between Secret Service, Sergeants-at-Arms, and what rules obtain. Next year if anyone interested.
Infuriated with everyone= meaning all media for presuming what anything a nut who thinks PoTUS can be impeached for using executive orders is credible without further verification. Were they being pwned? Have they learned nothing from the Notre Dame imaginary girlfriend's  non-existent death?
Beg to disagree=with Jan F, that Wonkette is all over it, as she did not seek confirmation from the US Secret Service, as did Think Progress.

And now, over and out.

[ Parent ]
Actually I was referring to Wonkette being all over the "pooping in his pants" part of that. (2.00 / 2)
I read the Think Progress piece as well but it did not cover that particular aspect. ;)

Good morning. (2.00 / 13)
Coffee's a-brewin and I'm getting an early start to my day. Our current temperature is in the mid-40s and we'll get to near 60F this afternoon under sunny skies.

Today is Lincoln's actual birthday. Creating Presidents Day may have been the right thing to do, but I miss having a short month with two national holidays. ;-)

There are, in every age, new errors to be rectified, and new prejudices to be opposed. ~Samuel Johnson (1709-1784)

Plus it helped kids learn history. (2.00 / 13)
The answer "3rd Monday in February" for "When is Lincoln's birthday?" will probably not be right.

The problem, in my mind, with having a Presidents Day to "honor all past presidents" is that not all past presidents deserve to be honored. In my not so humble opinion.

Ha! This wiki article has a discussion about whether it is "Presidents Day" or "Presidents' Day". How delightful that anyone cares!

[ Parent ]
I almost wrote it "Presidents' Day," but... (2.00 / 13)
...I didn't think that was dumbed down enough to be the official name of the holiday.

Good morning! (2.00 / 13)
We are going to play with some friends this AM.  I hope everyone has a great day.

cloudy and overcast here this morning (2.00 / 12)
and we have a new window. It is amazing what going from state-of-the-art 1930s to the present has done. Our house was designed by engineers who felt free to ignore architechural standards but at least they chose the very best materials. These houses were built by an oil company to house their workers and then to be moved to the next camp so they needed that aditional beefing up the engineers put in. And I like that the proportions are wrong because we have too much window to wall which improves the air circulation and most importantly makes our 1000 square feet appear much larger than it is. It did accoiunt for some shock at the Pella dealer though, we paid almost as much for these windows as we did for the house originally.

There's nothing like eavesdropping to show you that the world outside your head is different from the world inside your head.--Thornton Wilder

Morning all!!! 6th day of cloudy skies..... ick.... (2.00 / 14)
Will someone please fix my right shoulder???  Rotor cuff injury from shoveling snow a few weeks ago.  I confirmed last night that if I eat too much chocolate at once, I get indigestion/heartburn for a couple of hours.  I'm not amused by this turn of events.  How else am I to work on my anxiety?!?!?!  I just want the decision done and over with now.....

Sending energy your way.... (2.00 / 13)

another rainy day (2.00 / 12)
and in the 50's. It has been rainy, overcast, or drizzling for the good part of the week. I hope we aren't using up all our rain quota for the year, leaving us none for the summer. Well, at least the wildflowers are getting nourishment before the spring sprout.

I first thought you wrote "another raina day." (2.00 / 12)

Back from breakfast "out", always a great start (2.00 / 11)
especially on a clammy and rainy day. Had the "Wisconsin scramble" - featuring 4 kinds of cheese, still amazingly fluffy, and topped with chopped chives, plus bacon and sourdough toast. That should hold me until dinnertime. I love going out for breakfast, more than dinner, really.

I never travel without my diary. One should always have something sensational to read in the train.

good morning to moose new and old! (2.00 / 11)
quick update on moose schwag (shirts, bags, mugs, and misc merch):  i've been insanely busy, so i've recruited my lovely and talented wife (moose id 'proudmama') to help get things rolling while i eek out some time to revise our logos/design stuff. she's working up a proposal that examines a few paths forward (zazzle, cafe press, among other old skool options) to ensure the best possible deals/set-up/quality assurance/convenience for everyone.  the proposal will be soon be submitted to moose elders for review, consensus, and then we'll be off the the races.  soon your moose shirt, or canvass tote full of awesome, or whatever, will be the envy of all your friends -- nay the world.

in the interim, let's start brainstorming ideas for next year's superbowl halftime ad.

It's still morning for me.....and 47* and cloudy (2.00 / 7)
I had lots of flower fun yesterday....set up "shop" in my warmer than the garage basement and processed Valentine Day greens for my friends at the flower shop. The combination of moving their shop into the finally finished new space and the big ticket Valentines orders was overwhelming. They have been so nice to me it was good to return the support...buckets of ferns, salal, and boxwood. My whole house smelled fresh and green!

Sorry no translations, but basically the parents are asking their children whether they want a new brother or sister. Boy wants a brother because he already has a sister. Girl wants a sister to play with. They cut the cake to find out the gender. The reaction of one of them, well, poor thing, but so funny.

I'm sorry to hear that (2.00 / 4)
Can you stay out of the fight? I hope so.

Let there be light. Then let there be a cat, a cocktail, and a good book.

[ Parent ]
Yeah, I'm pretty much out of the fight - sent an email (2.00 / 4)
requesting direction.  Haven't heard back from the boss.  So, it's in their court as to what I'm supposed to be doing.  I'm not about to guess and get slapped again by them.  If they want to pay me to sit, then that's what I'll be doing.  Otherwise start communicating people!!

And I've not heard anything on the interview I had 1.5 weeks ago... hopefully this week.

Mostly Art (2.00 / 3)
Been working on updating some artwork. One of my favorite pictures has always been "Morning Has Broken". Unfortunately I hadn't been able to update the planet and tree since it kept crashing on my computer. I had an idea today and went to my old computer and transferred that file to disc and brought it over to the new computer. I was finally able to pull it up and fix the couple of "dated" areas. This is the result.
