'Mornin' peeps, and happy Monday. After a chilly weekend and progress on the workshop, I'm back to work today. Lucky trs is celebrating dead presidents with a day off; of course he's back at the workshop starting the electrical.

You will be astonished to know that nobody had the nerve to vote "fail" on domestic felines last week. We'll see how the doggies do this week.

Headed for about 40.  The sun is out, still some snow on the ground, especially on northern hill slopes.

It's a Monday, but it is also a Federal holiday.  That takes something of the sting out of it.

on 9/11 I was stuck in Toronto, flight home to Utah cancelled.

As I drove back to the lodge 2.5 hours north late that night I listened to AM880 in NYC the whole way, where I guy had been on air since early in the morning.

Surreal sharing the quite car with him, my own head full of fog and him weary and stunned. He had seen the first plane hit from his desk, then the second, then the second tower fall, then the first.

Yesterday's 3-day forecast was the same every day, and that was (2.00 / 13)
the GOOD news, so I've decided to ignore the weather until there is something genuinely good about it. Since I work at home and get a weekly organic grocery delivery, I don't have to go out much. That suits me fine in winter.

I'm glad you enjoyed the video. It was a new one to me.

The cold that has been nipping at my heels all week has finally caught up to me. My nose, throat, and chest are ready to be traded in for newer more healthy models. I went to the store and got some 'nice' gushy food to feed the fever, and some ice cream to feed my bad case of the grumps.

We are at 29 degrees here in st Charles.  Going up to almost fifty.  Windy. A front is coming bringing colder air again for tomorrow.

I am going to work today.  Now that I work so infrequently it seems even more difficult to go.  I would much rather stay here with the kids today. Non well.  A few extra bucks never hurt anyone.

Bitterly cold here in Saugerties NY because of a biting wind (2.00 / 22)
it's 19 they say, but wind chill makes it zero or lower.

My two dogs took a very very short trip outside to do the morning pee on a tree thingee, looking at me very mournfully as I opened the back door for them to go out.

The older of the two, usually meanders for about an hour - he makes endless circles before ultimately deciding where to poop (or pee) but this morning he was back in a flash.

Am home from school because of holiday but they changed my Monday class to Tuesday so I have to go in tomorrow. Will spend the day indoors, writing tomorrow's front porch piece.

that's what the weather guy says when the wind will be blowing steadily at 15-19 mph with gusts below 25. It's only windy when it's steady at over 20 mph but honestly if you're out in you can't tell the difference. It's all gritty.

5 degrees this morning in Northeast Ohio (2.00 / 10)
...at 7AM when I was waiting for bus. It's 23 now, and will get to the 40's. Then tomorrow we'll have one of those days in Ohio where the temp goes down all day, not up. Not like there's a giant fireball 93 million miles away that's supposed to heat us up during the day or anything. {sigh}.

The worst thing about Ohio weather isn't the cold, it's the rapid and frequent changes in weather. Here we like to say "if you don't like the weather in Ohio, just wait 5 minutes and it'll change."

One good thing about this time of year: March is coming up, which is maple syrup season, which means pancake breakfasts!! I look forward to it all year.

Anyways, things seem to be heating up at the Moose. There seems to be more diaries and more comments than before. The Moose is much friendlier place than other liberal corners of the Internet, so I'm glad this place is doing well.

Have a good day, Moose.

I slept in also. (2.00 / 11)
Yesterday's gym bleachers were particularly unyielding. They were hard plastic of some sort (most are wooden) and by the middle of the last game I could not find any way to get comfortable. Sometimes you can lean back and rest on the bleacher behind you (with piled up coats working like a mattress) but there was too much distance between the two. There was no game being played on the ceiling, which is the only thing I could see when I leaned back!!

So I slept fitfully last night from a sore back and then woke up with no interest in arising.

I see the word "try" in your work list so I hope that means that not everything is a necessity to get done. You are going to be away from home for a long time and I am sure that part of your to-do list is figuring out what you will ask your friends to schlep to your rehab location so that you are not completely bored there.

Words have meaning. Our words will reflect what is in our souls.

[ Parent ]
For some reason... (2.00 / 11)
...I always love your tales of uncomfortable gym seating. :-)

My to-do list is topped by laundry, which I MUST get all caught up on before surgery. (Daily trips down the street with small loads are in store.) Also on the list is schlepping bags of recycling trash down the back stairs, something I haven't been very good about for too long because it's hard work.

I also want to do vacuuming and dusting and general clean-up stuff, since I will apparently have home therapy visits. But I'm afraid the therapist will just have to deal with some clutter.

Oh and yes, I need to organize a travel bag with loose-fitting clothes, tablet, Kindle, cellphone, etc. The hospital doesn't want me bringing anything with me to surgery, so some kind soul will have to do the honors.

There are, in every age, new errors to be rectified, and new prejudices to be opposed. ~Samuel Johnson (1709-1784)

[ Parent ]
Will you be coming back to your apartment.... (2.00 / 9)
...right after surgery, or will you have a rehab stay some where else?

The joint center where Ron had his surgery had an annoyingly detailed packing list....I ended up putting his easily lost items such as chargers in labeled zip lock bags.

Any chance one of your local friends could help with the laundry/recycle schelping? I must note that I felt very pleased when I could take my own trash out all by myself, whenever I wanted to, without asking for help.....small accomplishments are large sometimes :)

...for about a week, after three or four days in hospital. But everything is yet to be determined. I've been promised that I won't be kicked out onto the street before I'm ready to cope with life in a third-floor apartment. So we'll see how fast I can recover!

Here's a story you can share at rehab. (2.00 / 9)
My mother had a hip replacement in the '80s, an open procedure with a long incision. She did very well and came home after a few days (first floor garden townhome) with PT coming to the house.

My dad called one evening, saying her incision was weeping more than the dressings could keep up with, and the bed linens were getting soiled. (That's probably what prompted his concern, i.e., changing the bed.) I thought about it for a minute, then I shared my brilliant idea with him: "Go to the store and buy a box of Kotex and lots of paper tape. Open one sterile Kotex, place it 'business side down' on the incision, and secure it with the tape."

Daddy, a WWII veteran and a chemical engineer, was rarely at a loss for words. He could grasp the concept, he could even carry out changing the dressing with a Kotex, but he said there was no way in hell he'd be caught dead making the purchase!

What a great story, Kelley! I have to admit that I'd feel awkward making that purchase. I could do it, I'd just feel funny. :-)

Well, this can be easily answered! (2.00 / 8)
For some reason... I always love your tales of uncomfortable gym seating.

It is a cruel cruel response probably in retaliation for my being one of your lazy lazy peeps. ;)

I hope your in-person peeps will care for your needs when you are locked away in rehab. You will want them to bring the things that you are sure to forget.

And I understand completely the "wanting to tidy  up" and I hope you have time to do that. I think clutter can be distracting and, with your limitations, only being able to stare at the messiness will probably make you sad. We cannot have a sad Silks ... that is my job!! Oops. I haz proof!:

 photo bulbs2.jpg

Flower bulbs are starting to show some green shoots.  The ones in front are crocus, so I expect to see some blooms soon.

Rain expected this week, which is good.  Despite getting drenched in December we've had almost no rain since then and are behind the curve now.

Wishing a safe and warm day to all in Mooselandia.

Ooooooh, Spring!! (2.00 / 11)

A fly-by storm gave us an entire quarter inch of snow last night. How rude!

Sorrow for me (2.00 / 20)
This morning I euthanized my 23-year-old Morgan gelding after a cruel, roller-coaster, ultimately unwinnable battle against founder.

He went swiftly, peacefully into surcease from pain.  He died with dignity, with his pride and spirit intact, and with a cookie in his mouth.

It was the right thing to do and it hurts like hell.

My deepest condolences on your loss. Going that last hard mile with our animals has to be one of the saddest things we're required to do.

He's a beauty. What was his name?

Knowing it is the right thing to do doesn't ease the hurt, does it?  I'm so sorry for your loss, though so very glad you were with him and had the courage required for that last, great gift of love.

I went Googling (you know me!) and found this beautiful article on the Morgan: (2.00 / 13)
Morgan Horse ... the Horse That Chooses You
The beauty of the Morgan horse lifts the heart. The breed exists solely because it pleases people. It is their heritage.

Reliable, loyal, tireless, and versatile, a Morgan becomes one with people of all ages and walks of life, sharing the mutual enjoyment in every equine pastime.

Very apt (2.00 / 10)
He was my first Morgan, after owning other breeds, and he was a fine example of the type.

It made me cry to write it (2.00 / 14)
His registered name was Beyond Command; his barn name was Commander; he had a hugely confident sense of his own self-worth, a clever and mischievous mind, and an inner fire beneath his quiet demeanor.

And he loved cookies, considered them his due.

If it were done when 'tis done, then 'twere well it were done subjunctively.

[ Parent ]
How long were you his person? (2.00 / 13)
It's sad to lose a horse at any age, but 23 seems too soon. (Not that I know what I'm talking about.) May he find cookies galore and endless green pastures in the summerlands.

[ Parent ]
Not very long (2.00 / 10)
He was given to me in November 2009 as his previous owner wanted to find a good home for Commander; he'd foundered with Rick and, while he'd bounced back to soundness, Rick didn't feel comfortable riding him as hard as he wished.

We had about a year and a half of fun together, then the spring grass got him, despite my best efforts to acclimate him as slowly and safely as I had the previous spring.  Since then it's been a roller coaster of soundness and trouble, gradually but steadily spiralling down to today.

I've had my other horse, Ben, since 2002; he's now 21 and pretty much retired.  He's gonna miss his little Morgan buddy.

I'm so sorry. He was beautiful.

I know after his pain he appreciated your compassion. I also know that doesn't make it any easier.

Justin Morgan had a horse . . . (2.00 / 10)
He was a beauty, and 23 is a venerable age.

I first rode a Morgan when I was still in single digits, and have always loved them. The most marvelous horses ever.

Many condolences, but I think he was lucky to have such a caring human.

Your courage was a real tribute to Commander, janicket (2.00 / 9)
I hope that in your grief you will be able to take some comfort in knowing that you did the best thing, at the best point in time. You prevented needless suffering and honored your commitment to an equine friend. All domestic animals deserve that, but few get it when the chips are down.

Goodbye and Thanks for all the Fish! Not me real Dolphins (2.00 / 6)
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/new...

A group of over 100,000 dolphins spotted off the coast of San Diego caused a spectacle for nature watchers as they traveled together in an enormous pack.
'They were coming from all directions, you could see them from as far as the eye can see,' Joe Dutra said after seeing the spectacle first hand.
Mr Dutra, who captains Hornblower Cruises, was out on his daily tour with a boat full of nature watchers when he spotted the massive group of dolphins.

Strange days indeed, most peculiar momma
