Good morning, Moosekind. Don't forget to let your peeps know where to find you.

The common Moose, Alces alces, unlike other members of the deer family, is a solitary animal that doesn't form herds. Not so its rarer but nearest relative, Alces purplius, the Motley Moose. Though sometimes solitary, the Motley Moose herds in ever shifting groups at the local watering hole to exchange news and just pass the time.

silks is thru the surgery...according to nurses surgery went well...he spent an hour in recovery...x-rays...currently is his room resting and drugged...no phone contact with the silky one yet...might not happen until tomorrow...but an attempt will be made.


Just spoke with him on the phone. He said he was told surgery went very well. His throat is sore from being intubated but that is normal. He's groggy. He's waiting for food. He's in good spirits. He's watching tv but has no idea what it is. lol.

I'm going to go up first thing in the morning and deliver his worldly possessions including his phone. I'll let you know how our visit goes.

I GOT THE OFFER!!!!!  I start on the 18th of March.  Thank you all for bearing with me and my foibles during the past months.

Report on silky from the GOS (2.00 / 16)
I delivered his phone and other possessions.

If you have his number he is requesting no phone calls for a couple of days. He's heavily medicated and can't retrieve words easily.

I got there just after he had completed his first steps. He walked to his door and back, so 10-15 steps. It was painful getting back into bed, of course. The PT lady was very nice and is helping him with his first exercises. He has a private room so that's nice. The facilities are very decent. A nice setup with TV and the staff is wonderful. Very caring and friendly. He's doing great according to the staff.

He wanted to know how Phil was today. He's really fond of you Phil.

He doesn't want visitors yet. I told him to text me with anything he needs and to let me know when he feels he can handle conversation. He'll likely not get online today.

He looks really good and is in very good spirits. He's being well taken care of.

He thanks you all for caring and wondering how he is. I told him about all of your well wishes. Thanks to all.

the wind blew overnight but is supposed to calm down to merely breezy today. We have a new window in the bedroom so we didn't hear it, it is amazing how much difference they are making. We're taking a break from construction to go to our cabin in the hill country this weekend, I haven't been this year yet and am looking forward to getting away. It's beautiful there at least if it's not cedar fever season which should have passed by now. The last time I was exposed to that I had to see the dr. for antibiotics for the actual infection it caused. That's some seriously bad stuff and worse yet since the cedar is an invasive non-native.

they disperse huge clouds of yellow pollen which causes everyone, even those not prone to allergies, to have violent reactions. There's something in it that makes it worse than just allergies with most people coming down with secondary infections. That state is known as cedar fever and the only good thing to say about it is that it isn't annual, the cedar doesn't bloom every year. There are some serious cedar eradication programs going on, we attack them whenever we find them on our property. We're not into poisons so we work on mechanical methods which research has proven to be more effective anyway.

I didn't have too many problems with it until we moved into town and learned there's a huge patch of cedar not a quarter of a mile down our road. I just hope the pollen is done and over with early since the winter has been warmer than normal this year. The last few weeks have been bad, but at least it there was only one trip to the doctor's office for a shot--there have been a few times when I needed a weekly shot.

My daughter is in Austin and she's highly sensitive to cedar pollen. Poor girl is miserable right now. Every time we go down there I wind up having to take Claritin D, it's either that or look like I'm bawling my eyes out constantly.

Most of the time I absolutely love Austin, but during cedar season my ardent affection does tend to wane a bit!

Snow? I got snow -- again. Had planned to clear off the car this (2.00 / 12)
morning but have put that project on hold until after noon, when allegedly the snow will stop.  It's just below freezing and will get a few degrees above with flurries forecast for the next two days.  Much of I-70 across Missouri is a mess, particularly at the Kansas City end.  Columbia is exactly (give or take a couple of miles) between KC & StL so there is exceptionally heavy truck traffic the whole way across the state.  No place for a sensible person to be.

Of course I grew up in the DC burbs and learned to drive on the Capitol beltway. So I scoff at what most folks consider traffic.

I-70 is the pits ... literally. (2.00 / 11)
Major east west interstate and it has potholes that you could lose a small vehicle in. I do just about anything I can to avoid using it but was stuck on it last summer on my way home from a relative's house at the Lake of the Ozarks.

I talked to my folks in Kansas City yesterday afternoon and they said they got another 9 inches of snow.

Driving between Colorado Springs and Columbia is pretty much a (2.00 / 11)
cake walk for me until I get to KC.  The signage isn't always correct and more often than not I end up where I don't need to be.  The traffic from KC east can be nightmarish, in no small part because the roadbed is shot and has been for years.  The truck traffic just destroyed it but MO's transportation department  hasn't yet figured out what to do.  They simply can't close it down for repair because there is no alternate route.

Exactly! I-70 is a major *national* highway and it needs to be completely rebuilt. (2.00 / 9)
I used to know the highways around Kansas City pretty well when I lived there and worked downtown. But they have changed a lot since then and the bypasses are somewhat confusing especially the south bypasses handling Kansas side traffic.

One of the problems with repairs is that in some places the interstate footprint is pretty narrow. The whole thing should be made 3 lanes both ways but there are some places where there is not enough width. That makes it very expensive.

I-35 from Iowa to Kansas City got a lot of work done using ARRA funds ... I wish they had had some shovel ready projects for I-70.

I-80 is another major east-west route and the (2.00 / 10)
construction on that has been going on for years!!  The past 5 have been working on making it at least 3 lanes each way around Iowa City.  Not sure how much further east they're going to take it.... if they're not, then I think they're finally done with that part.  The two lane part is generally speaking - outside lane for commercial truckers and inside lane for 'little' cars.  Or at least that's the way it seems to me.

My dog talks.  This morning Monty Beagle sat by my side of the bed as Dearly Beloved and I were sitting up drinking our early morning tea. He wanted his breakfast and he wanted it right away. Evidence shows that incidents like mass shootings, murders, even suicides in major news stories do tend to result in upticks of the statistics of similar crimes/suicides. Not sure this is how I want us to be inspiring the rest of the world, but sadly we seem to be doing so.

it is colder here in Dallas than I am used to (2.00 / 10)
Dallas isn't that far from Austin, but in the winter, the weather can be completely different. I had on a short sleeved sweater when I left Austin, had to pull on my warm cardigan when I got here.

Eating breakfast - I brought my smoothies with me (didn't want all that food in my fridge to go bad). I forgot to pack my glasses, so my doc is e-mailing me my prescription & I'll go to a 1-hour place. Was weird getting up & putting in the contacts almost immediately.

Today: gym & hospital, then maybe the gym again. My brother said even conscious last Sunday, Mom wasn't coherent. She had an infection but that must be gone, because when I touched her forehead, she seemed cool. I don't know if she was trying to wake up, but every few minutes, she'd seem to furrow her brow & move around. So today will be what it will be.

Sitting here trolling for quotes about social media to use for a class I give twice a month to seniors. So far I've got 2:

I'm self-employed, and work has been erratic lately.

I've racked up huge vet bills for my horses and cats, and had to put down my elder horse a week ago.

And now, after weeks of growing difficulty in functioning, I've seen an orthopedist for persistent hip pain and got the verdict I was afraid I'd hear:

I need a total hip replacement.

Oh, it doesn't have to be right away; I can put it off till I just can't live with the discomfort and restrictions any more.  But, having looked at the x-ray and seen the wear-and-tear damage to the joint for myself, it's a matter of when, not if.

Crap.  I did not need to hear that.

If it were done when 'tis done, then 'twere well it were done subjunctively.

There is never a good time to get crappy news but it seems like you have had more than your share of it lately.

slksfca has just had his hip replacement (as you probably figured out) and I am sure he will be able to commiserate over "putting it off until you can't live with the discomfort and restrictions". He has been trying to have this surgery scheduled for many months, possibly since I have "known" him.

 Overconfident heading into surgery. I mean that I survived (slendidly!) the physical challenges facing me, but the emotional challenges have been  a  whole other kettle of fish. "Shift"  is more than just the description of what is happening to the leadership of the Roman Religion.

Anyhoo, I have gained patience and wisdom throught my ordeal. And I HOPE that CBS and ABC have learned a thing or two about what they're selling to America's ladies.

[NOTE - I've left the previous paragraph exactly as originally typed even though I haven't a clue as to what I was carrying on about in the first place. As may easily be perceived, and the reason people tend to stare at me here, is that my typical standard (of LIFE itself as a specie of performance) has been amplified and corroborratted thank yew so much.

Love Your Purple Mountain Majesties, and I expect to have far less access to opiates aand stuff very soon, so enjoy while you can. My "appearance" in Hollywood will be strictly OTR, NTK, and all the rest.
