Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: May 4th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good Wednesday morning, Moosekind! We received .33 of an inch of rain yesterday, not all at once. I may tell you it hardly makes a dent in the 5-inch deficit.

    It’s a gorgeous day here, 63 F. heading for 77 F., except there is too much wind for my taste. I have Nails at 11 with Mr. Tony.

    Neither Dearly nor I can figure out how he Roku works, so we’re up a creek until one of our kids or grandkids comes over. I have to get ready today to conduct my writers’ group meeting tomorrow, because there’s a lecture I’d like to attend at 11 a.m. tomorrow and it lasts an hour. I’ll barely have time to bake the strawberry scones and take the lemon curd and clotted cream out of the fridge before it’s time to wheel it all over to Neighborhood 3, where we meet.

    One thing about acting in plays, Moosekind—it keeps the loathsome outside world from intruding overmuch. We’ve got the Israeli-Hamas war and now the India-Pakistan war? I wish Kashmir were an independent country. Oh, and don’t forget the Houthis! Bah.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  2. It’s 59 heading for 69 and overcast. The lights are on and the PV system isn’t. Yesterday we generated 5.8 KWHs and the m-t-d at 97.9 is losing ground.

    I’ll have a fire this afternoon and do laundry to hang in front of it. I wasn’t expecting to do another in the house this season but here we are. In many ways I do prefer it. I don’t have to carry a full laundry basket over uneven ground to get to where I hang it is the major reason. That and the cats can’t get out because I’m not opening the back door.

    This dark & damp (& relatively chilly) makes it hard for me to get up, slow to move, and always groggy. Sigh. Anyway, I’ve had my oatmeal and had best be about my boosting day. Try to do my little bit of good, light that one half a candle, in a very dark and evil world. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  3. Good morning, 49 and cloudy in Bellingham today. Bri will be here soon so focusing on moving plants, pruning laurel branches growing to close to the barbeque, feeding the trees growing in pots, etc will keep me busy. I’ll soon be ready plant a few flowers and knowing that will be easier this year feels fine.

    The implant is finally finished, the new tooth is settling in, I like the new dentist, and now I hope to have a rest from tooth troubles. Best wishes to all.

    • {{{princesspat}}} Yay for easier gardening and especially YAY! for a rest from tooth troubles! Healing Energy. Moar {{{HUGS}}}

  4. Good morning. Thursday. I will just keep repeating “I can do this” all day in my head. Just hoping that worshipers of the Pyrite Idol don’t manage to completely destroy something today.

  5. Good Thursday morning, Meese! It’s fine and fair here in dry old Ashburn, with little tags of white cloud dotting the blue sky. On my walks I’ve noticed the sweet smell of lilacs and even, a little, of roses, although roses nowadays are bred for looks rather than scent. Anyway, we have 64 F. right now at 9 a.m., going up to 77 F., with rain predicted for 4 p.m. Uh huh, uh huh.

    We’ve had a tasty, although unhealthful, breakfast of French pancakes and bacon. I need to remind my writers that we’re meeting today and not to eat too much lunch, as strawberry scones, clotted cream, and lemon curd will be coming at them later.

    Haven’t really begun on the two interviews I’m meant to conduct. One will be easy to do, but the astronomy club will be difficult to research.

    What else—the clapboard arrived from Amazon, so must get to grips with that for the Reader Theatre next week. I’m hoping to nab a few actors at the cast party tomorrow to ask if they want to be in it. Drama Club meetings have been ill attended lately.

    There’s a lecture on Mortality that I’d like to attend next door at 11 o’clock. Before that happens, I need roll out the scones, cutting them into round shapes. I’ve spent a lot of time in the U.K. and never, never, have I ever seen triangular scones. Whatever next?

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  6. It’s 58 going up to 71 and overcast. Not raining but very humid. Yesterday we generated 6.78 KWHs which at least covers what I use in a day. The m-t-d at 104.8 is losing ground.

    Yesterday basket’s kitty Bentley went over the Rainbow Bridge. He’d been failing for some time although of course basket & Amelia/earicicle did what they could. But it was getting harder and harder to get his meds down him. And harder and harder for the poor boy to keep the meds down. We’ve all been through it. When a cat (or dog) say’s “it’s time”, well, it’s time. Lisa found a vet who’d come to the house so Bentley wouldn’t be traumatized by a vet visit and the other cats would know what was happening. And so the household goes on with a piece missing from everybody’s hearts.

    Groggy. I usually am on cloudy days. Even some sunny days. LOL. But I’ve best be about my boosting work. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

    • Poor basket! And poor Bentley. I remember when Bentley came to live with the household. It was years ago.

      Time eases the pain but one never really gets over it.

  7. Good morning, meeses! Thursday …

    It is 68 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 86. Sunny skies are in the forecast. I could not see my moon yesterday because there were clouds over the mountains. It may have risen up over the clouds later after I was in bed.

    I see that the Senate confirmed a permanent guy to be in charge of Social Security. He is the CEO of FISERV, an IT firm that works with banks and automatic payment systems. I hope he is not a terrible person and that he has the power to kick the DOGies out of SSA. Fingers crossed!

    I have had a busy morning and it is only going to get busier. I want to get my work done so that I can watch the Big XII Softball Tournament this afternoon.

    See all y’all later!

  8. Good morning, 49 and sunny with a light breeze. Last evening we had a deluge rain storm so the garden is soaked. Bri had to change her schedule so she will be here this morning and Sue this afternoon. I’m lingering with music and coffee now but it will be a busy day. Best wishes to all.

  10. I’m fascinated by the new Pope’s Black NOLA ancestry – since I have studied Black Creoles extensively

    New York Times has the story:
    New Pope Has Creole Roots in New Orleans
    His ancestry, traced to a historic enclave of Afro-Caribbean culture, links Leo XIV to the rich and sometimes overlooked Black Catholic experience in America.

    • Wow on the Black Catholic Connection! I saw that his father was French and Italian and that his mother was Spanish. The descendant of immigrants – I hope he honors his heritage.

  11. Good morning. Just checking in to say hi. Very angry about tfg firing the Librarian of Congress. One of the commenters in our Ms D’s rec-listed diary pointed out this could be as much about presidential records as about the obvious misogynoir. (and also, just hating libraries, books & reading)

  12. Good Friday morning, Moosekind! It’s 56 F. here, with a pause between showers, good. Ordinarily I’d be pleased as punch about the rain, but today is the Cast Party. I wanted to wear a longish flowery dress and a floppy hat. Might do it anyway, wot the ‘ell. The temp. may rise to the mid-60s.

    Feeling very happy because “I’m feeling lucky” Google helped me find a recipe I’ve been trying to recall for YEARS. (DuckDuckGo, which I normally use, didn’t have it.) It’s called Little Fellow Lemon Pies. They’re really tarts. I thought I remembered the ingredients, but just wanted to check whether it was half a cup of butter or a whole cup. Whew! I’m going to make them for the June meeting of my writers’ group.

    Other than that, I’ll be recruiting at the Cast Party for people to read the lines in my play.

    Saw where Bill Gates called Melon a murderer for starving children to death. Melon killed USAID. Now, if all the Richie Riches would do the same…

    Have had some coffee and perked up. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

    • I loved this! “Bill Gates called Melon a murderer for starving children to death”

      Melon, of course, won’t care – he is a sociopath. But the more people who say it out loud, the better.

  13. It’s 60 heading for 77 and looks to be a bright sunny day. Yesterday we generated 9.16 KWHs and the m-t-d at 114.25 lost more ground. No way it can catch up in one day but maybe we can gain a little. We shall see what we shall see.

    The new pope looks good. Not sure I’m happy with the name he chose but that’s not really my business. And while I’m well aware that the enemy of my enemy isn’t always my friend, it’s a good sign just must the MAGAts hate him.

    If it stays sunny and gets to the temp the widget says it will, I won’t be having a fire tonight. Which is good. In this “new normal” it’s a little late in the year for fires. It has been clearing off at night and I’ve seen the moon almost nightly for the last week. And even when I don’t see her, I leave the curtains open on clear nights when she’s about so I at least see the progress of the shaft of moonlight across my bed/bedroom whenever I surface. So that’s comforting. Meanwhile, time to be about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  14. Good morning, meeses! Friday …

    It is 84 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 93. Sunny skies are in the forecast. I saw the moon yesterday evening and missed her this morning by about 30 minutes as she was not quite set but had disappeared behind the buildings. She is very bright, 92% illumination, full on May 12 at 9:55am MST.

    The new Pope is not from the Hate The People wing of the Catholic Church so that is a good thing. He thinks JD Vance is a doodiehead which is another good thing. If indeed he chose the name Leo XIV because he wants to pattern himself after Leo XIII, the pope who wrote the Rerum Novarum encyclical, it will be interesting to see how quickly the MAGAts turn on him. The MAGAts that NBC had on during the Pope News yesterday thought they would like him. Ha!

    I am already tired of sitting at my computer and will go sit in my easy chair while I am monitoring a computer setup.

    See all y’all later!

  15. Good afternoon, 49 and light rain today. I’ve rested the morning away so now it’s time to tend to my ever messy desk. I have a new printer to learn how to use, a long ago list of what I need to do so someone can assist with managing finances if needs me, and years of old files to shred or burn. I had a good start last fall but then I got to sick to continue and now I just don’t want to do the work. Oh well, a few hours will be ok and then I can think about the garden.

    It was fun working with Bri yesterday. I’ve saved the old terracotta pots that a too weather worn and cracked to use as stand alone planters. So yesterday we knocked the bottoms out and partially buried them in the slope of the new garden bed and they now retain and hold soil for plants that will eventually grow deeper roots. It’s nice to see them in use again. So now I want to do more, but am trying to stay with my keep it simple plan. Feeling grateful for garden therapy. As always my best wishes to all.

  16. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

    It is 68 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 93. Sunny skies are in the forecast. The bright moon was visible last night, heading towards full on May 12 at 9:55am MST. The Morning Star was visible over my mountains this morning, greeting me as the day begins.

    My University of Arizona softball team advanced to the championship game of the Big XII tournament. They will face Nijaree Canady in the circle, a pitcher who transferred from Stanford to Texas Tech when that school put together a $1 million plus NIL for her. She is a nice person and an excellent pitcher and I am personally glad for her that she could cash in on her skills but I am sad for the future of women’s college sports, where rich alumni can literally buy players for their teams. It has been happening in men’s sports for years but men also have professional sports options. Women’s sport are, first and foremost, a way for women to get scholarships to get a “free” education. If schools have to drop sports or cut back on scholarships because they can no longer compete, that sucks for everyone. In the meantime, I will root for my team today and hope that they win.

    See all y’all later!

  17. Good morning. Got lots to do today: housework, exercise, groceries…..but no cooking. I don’t love the lunch I made last week but it’s healthy and my tastebuds will adapt. Maybe I’ll add more avocado. Probably first 100 degree day next week. But sure, climate change is totally a hoax.

  18. It’s 59 heading for 74 and cloudy. Not dark but certainly not sunny either. Yesterday we generated 18.92 KWHs and the m-t-d at 133.93 gained a little.

    For some reason I could not wake up this morning. I kept drifting back to sleep. Had trouble not doing that even while I was doing my back exercises and did once I finished. I guess I needed it but I’m certainly starting late on my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}
