Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: July 20th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good morning. Yesterday was nice, I got a tiny clock set in a crystal thing & people said nice things. Hard to believe it’s been 25 years. Today is just normal wfh. Watching Le Tour — yesterday was exciting, they ended by riding up Mount Ventoux, a beyond-category climb.

  2. It’s 74 heading for 96/heat index 106 and sunny. At the moment. Yesterday we generated 20.12 KWHs and the m-t-d at 365.51 gained a little. And we’re on track to get over 500. We’ll see what the day brings.

    Thinking of Fineena. Even if I didn’t talk to her any other time, and during that last year I talked to her almost daily, I always talked to her on the 4th Wednesday of the month, to remind her that her Social Security should have hit. Hard to believe it’s just over a year since she’s been gone. She’d have hit 71 yesterday if she were still here.

    Rocky night. But I’m breathing a little better this morning. May it last. Anyway, time to be about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  3. Good Wednesday morning, Moosekind! It’s 78 F. in Ashburger. They keep saying, “Oh, what a nice day,” on the telly but it’s not beautiful at all: it looks as if it might rain any minute. No problem if they do, we’re 2 inches under for the year, but I wish they’d get their story straight.

    I went to the garden to pick some more somewhat-ripe tomatoes. They’ll finish ripening in a cosy bowl right in the kitchen. I foresee Friday night tabouleh and Saturday night summer spaghetti, which are delicious. Sunday, Dearly has consented to eat Quiche Lorraine. The food available here is either fried, red meat, or tofu. Had vegetable lo mein at one of the restaurants on Sunday and they put SUGAR in it! Ugh.
    My weight is up this morning, and I don’t know whether to blame the edema, which never stops, or the three tacos with refried beans I ate last night at Anita’s. They certainly were tasty, though!

    Just came back from the art studio to help paint flats for our fall play, “The Art of Murder.” I’m absolutely awful at painting but my BFF is a whiz. She conducts an art class on Thursdays. This afternoon I have to interview a darling man who provides a lot of the music here.

    Will not comment on politics, it’s too depressing. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  4. Good morning, 66 and sunny outside my windows today. Emma’s birthday is this week and we’ll have dinner for her here on Sunday. She wants to help plan the menu so I’m curious re her choices, and very grateful she is happy about being here. I have hydrangeas for her birthday bouquet this year…..23 bouquets, how can that be!

    My friend and her daughter were here for tea yesterday, and it was nice to just relax together in the garden and visit. We tried to stay away from politics but unfortunately the political mess has impacted her daughters life because the public health grants she was involved with have all been defunded. It’s hard to start over at age 50 but that’s her reality thanks to the stupid mess this country is mired in.

    Bri will be here soon so hopefully part of the garden will be watered by the new drip system. The new hoses I’ve bought make hand watering easier for me but it takes a lot of time. I’ve got time, but energy is a challenge. As always, my best wishes to all.

  5. Good afternoon, Meeses! Wednesday …

    It is 97 degrees in Tucson, as it begins a steady rise in temperatures for the next 4 days until the rains come back. The mornings are cool but too muggy for me. My body likes the 10% humidity

    I had some early morning meetings then some errands and I got home exhausted. Tonight the WNBA Mercury hosts the Atlanta Dream at 7pm which is close to my bedtime! The game is not on my WNBA League Pass so I broke down and paid the $5.99 to watch the game on Merc+, the teams livestream. It’s only money!!

    See all y’all tomorrow!

  6. Thursday Meese. We’re back to another heat advisory here in Kingston :(

  7. Good morning. In the office, but leaving early for the eye doc. Watching Le Tour on my laptop. I’ll miss it next week. La Vuelta (Spanish Tour) doesn’t start for a month. Anyway, hi.

  8. Good morning, meeses! Thursday …

    It is 77 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 97. Sunny skies are in the forecast. For the first time in quite a while, the morning humidity is 12% – it has been over 30% which is oppressive to people acclimated to the desert. The moon is not visible because she is at .3% illumination and will be new at 12:11pm MST today. I did see her companion, the Morning Star, when I visited my deck.

    It is sad that institutions of higher learning – and media companies and sports team owners and really everyone who runs a business – has to pay extortion to the Republican’s president in order to continue to stay in business. That the Republican Party and the Bernie Sanders’ Supreme Court are allowing it will be a permanent stain on the soul of our country. Should Columbia University and CBS bow to the king and pay the fee and move on? A bigger question is if they will be allowed to move on or if, as is more likely, they will have to keep paying extortion because now the extorter knows they are willing to? Time will tell but when the history of these times are written I would rather be one of the universities or media companies – or Blue State governors – pushing back instead of giving in.

    I watched my WNBA team for a while last night and then had to go to bed. They lost but they had all of their injured players back except one and I think they are not used to playing together yet. Plus they were playing a tough team with a former player, Brittany Griner, who was energized by what had been her home court. The fans were nice to her – as they should be – but next time we meet it will be more like a normal game.

    See all y’all later!

  9. It’s 75 heading for 97/heat index 107 and sunny. Yesterday we generated 19.41 KWHs and the m-t-d at 384.93 gained a little more and is on track to get over 500 by end of month. If it stays sunny, as it’s supposed to, we should be over 400 by end of today.

    Well, I got a shock yesterday. After being assured by the city & county planning offices than nothing but sewer maintenance was going on in the empty lot next door and relaxing, well. . . An earth mover started moving earth and a bit later I saw a couple of guys looking over the work so I went out to talk to them. Building contractor. They’re starting work on building 4 multi-story single-family dwellings on that double lot. Including one as best I can tell perfectly placed to block my solar panels during the prime generating part of the day. And while my electric bill may be ethically and morally their problem, it’s not legally their problem, so they don’t care. I always figured somebody would build on that lot sooner or later – and now we’re 27 years later – but I did think it would be consistent with the existing structures on the block. Which would be single story and set back from the street 20′. But legally they can set back only 10′ and they can build up to 3 stories without a variance. So that’s what they’re doing. Sigh.

    Meanwhile my friend is seeing her divorce and bankruptcy lawyer today. She’s anxious about it, as who wouldn’t be, but we’re all hoping that since her soon to be Ex did the filing that he’ll continue to think it’s his idea and not cause trouble. Hoping. Not counting on. Good energy in that direction would be appreciated.

    My low back is killing me. Must have slept wrong or something. Taken some Ibu and iced it once already. I’ll ice it again when the ice pack has refrozen. Meanwhile, I need to make a phone call to City Planning and then be about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  10. Good Thursday morning, Meese! It’s a gorgeous day here in Ashburn, 76 F. right now, going up to 90-something. Tomorrow t’will be worse.

    Glad to report that so far I’m not itching, except lightly, on my back. But that’s always the case when I don’t put lotion on it. Made Granola Sundaes and English muffins for breakfast, now enjoying coffee. We’re going shopping this morning as soon as everyone is coherent.

    It’s depressing how the gang in the government defies tradition, norms, and the LAW and never gets held to account.

    Book club this afternoon and THEN I can get back to writing the monologue and the two Reader Theater plays I’m supposed to write. Just looked on the calendar and the information meeting about the new play will be Monday. It’ll be interesting to see who turns up.

    Bfitz, that’s AWFUL about the builders blocking your solar panels! Hope there’s something you can do. Probably both your Congress critters are Rethugs, though. I used to like to get Congress critters in on things. It works, too. People pay attention to a letter from a Congress person.

    Was reading the obits this morning and learned that a Sikh man, more than 100 years old, has died—and not from natural causes, either. He was run over by a truck. Apparently he started a running club of co-religionists in London, called “Sikhs in the City.” Told Dearly about it but he didn’t get the joke. I never watched that show but a lot of people did.

    Gotta get moving, Meese. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

    • Unfortunately there’s nothing I can do about it. It’s perfectly legal – and they’ve got all the permits – to build closer to the road than the rest of the houses on this block. It’s perfectly legal to build w/in 5′ of the property line. Actually I’m lucky. My own house is 15′ from the property line so the new structure will be 20′ from my house instead of 15′ or less. Sigh. (& yes, ALL my elected officials at the federal level are Rs. Most at the state level, too. My personal state rep & state senator are Dems, but they are a very small minority.) {{{Diana}}}
