Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: March 1st

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good afternoon, meeses! Wednesday …

It is 79 degrees and mostly sunny. The waning fullish moon was streaming into my abode when I got up and was with me most of my quiet work time this morning.

I had errands to run this morning and now I have to turn on my TV for a day packed with sports. BigTen and Big XII women’s basketball tournaments, Unrivaled championship game, USA Soccer v Canada in She Believes Cup – it is a good thing I have a DVR.

    See all y’all tomorrow!

  2. Thursday Meese. Have to take hubby to a doc appointment this morning. Hate to go out in the cold/rain.

  3. Good Thursday morning, Meese! It’s 49 F. in Ashburn at the moment, with rain expected at 6 p.m. We woke up to a nursery rhyme day:

    One misty, moisty morning
    When cloudy was the weather…

The thick mist is beginning to dissipate now, although pearls of moisture still decorate the screens on the porch.

A week from today I’ll be making Gingerbread Supreme to serve to my writers. I noticed something interesting about the WWII recipe: it calls for maple syrup rather than molasses. Wonder whether that’s because during the war they couldn’t get molasses, a byproduct of sugar cane manufacturing, but instead used maple syrup because it was obtainable from our Northern states? Interesting.

Off to get dressed and start my day. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

    • {{{Diana}}} If the recipe is from someone who lived in the northern states, then yes, they’d have used maple syrup because they could get it locally – possibly even make it themselves if they lived rural. So that’s the most probable. Most of the WWII recipes I have from midwestern or southern sources used Karo syrup. Unless they were in or very close to Louisiana – they still used molasses.

      • My mother used Karo syrup in some recipes and we lived in Massachusetts. She also used molasses, not maple syrup except to pour on pancakes and waffles.

  4. Ya know, I really, Really, REALLY hate it when WordPress logs me out when I’m in the middle of writing my post. And it erases my post – when it goes to the little message about I have to be logged in to post I can’t/haven’t been able to go back, copy it, log in again, then paste it into a new post. growl!

    OK – short version. it’s 59 heading for 70, cloudy – supposed to rain but won’t. We generated 2.64 KWHs and at 33.09 the m-t-d is way off track. We got 2″ of rain yesterday which we seriously need. Natalia’s swelling/itching aren’t better but they aren’t worse and her mental health is much better for being away from the office for 2 days. She’s leaving for the farm tonight b/c she and her sister are doing something together tomorrow afternoon. My cough is just as bad when I cough but I’m only seriously coughing when I’m on the treadmill or lying flat on my back. & I need to get boosting. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

    • Very odd to be logged off in the middle of writing a comment. I have noticed that my browser is more touchy lately and little clicks do big unexpected things. Which browser do you use?

      • I’m using Duck Duck Go right now but it did it to me on Edge as well. I always check when I get in to see if I’m logged in. And if I’m not of course I immediately go log in. But when I’m logged in, have even written a reply or two, and then get logged out in the middle of writing a comment. . . 😡 And while it doesn’t happen everyday or anything like that, it probably does happen about every 3rd time WordPress logs me out. sigh.

    • Sorry about the cough, bfitz. Every time I think my cough is over, it starts up again. I kept myself awake last night because of it so slept an extra long time this afternoon. Got NOTHING done today, but I enjoyed Granddaughter’s visit!

  5. I went into work, had done my walk, sat down to eat — and my stomach said “nope”. Like, so much “nope” that I came home. Now I’m dozing and watching Leverage — a great show about con artists who steal from rich folks and people who’ve screwed people over. Great comfort watch. Got to eat enough breakfast that I can at least take my eye vitamins, and stay upright for a little while. But ugh.

  6. Good morning, meeses! Thursday …

It is 61 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 79. Sunny skies. Overnight it will get down to 41 and the daytime high will not get above 70. Rollercoaster HVAC for a while.

My basketball teams both lost but the game I was watching, the US Soccer in the SheBelieves Cup was fun. USA defeated Canada 1 to 0. That tournament wraps up on Sunday. WCHA Womens Hockey today with my Badgers playing this afternoon.

Ignoring the news. The fundies are getting their Armageddon – they must be delighted.

    See all y’all later!

  7. Good morning, 45 and light clouds in Bellingham today. I spent time with Ron’s devices yesterday and they are working again but I don’t know how or if I “fixed” the problem. I just did the basics…..restart everything including the modem, delete all browsing data, close all the open tabs, update everything, reinstall a few apps, do a scan, then shut down and restart again, etc. I really didn’t want to shop for a new computer so this buys some time. The iPad is still under warrenty so he will take it to a Apple store for a diagnostic check, but I suspect the many open tabs may have been the culprit. He still thinks it’s all magic :) Best wishes to all.

    • I hope I don’t need a new computer for a while. The computer companies are building them with AI chips at the expense of speedier actually useful components like disk storage. And all the software is AI enabled including the operating systems. That is going to slow everything down. :(

  8. Friday Meese. Headed to New Hampshire this morning – 5 hour drive. Weather report is snow :(

  9. Good morning. I came in to work, we’ll see how it goes. Good walk, 1.75 mi. Happy Friday, I hope nothing terrible happens today.

  10. It’ 66 heading for 75 and while I can see a few patches of blue it’s mostly cloudy and looks to stay that way. Sigh. Yesterday we generated 9.82 KWHs and the m-t-d at 42.94 is way behind.

Yesterday was the 10th year anniversary of triciawyse death. One person mentioned it the day’s Pootie Diary & linked to BiPM’s Cheers & Jeers (Bill did s short memorial at the end) – and not one single other person responded or commented on the Pootie Queen. In the Pootie Diary. I still miss her so much. It’s worse than sad to see so many people able to just erase her like that.

    Natalia’s at the farm and hopefully the swelling and itching will get/are getting better over the weekend when she’s not having to go into work. My cough seems to be better – until I have another coughing fit. It’s almost like going longer between coughing fits means each coughing fit itself is worse. Sigh. Didn’t have a fire last nigh – it didn’t drop below 70 until after 8 pm – so ended up getting up at midnight to walk out muscle spasms in both feet on the treadmill. Double sigh. Slow and loggy this morning. And running behind. I’d best be about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

    • “Swelling and itching,” bfitz? Wonder whether Natalia has Chronic Spontaneous Urticaria, like me. I’m keeping it under control with Xyzal (generic Levocetirizine) and a prescription anti-itch ointment, Tri- something, but my lower lip is still a tiny bit swollen. Luckily it’s inside, so it doesn’t show much.

The cause, I’m told, is stress. Pure and simple, stress. Sounds as if Natalia has a lot of it right now.

      • She is definitely under a lot of stress right now but hers is poison sumac. Not a good thing but at least has a discernable cause and will go away eventually. Healing Energy for your condition.

  11. Good Friday morning, Moosekind! It’s another damp, drizzly morning, 49 F. in Ashburn right now, going up to 55 F. later. In the bare woods the streams have developed into twin lakes. It’s a long time since that has happened! Last night late, I popped my head out to hear that it was raining. Good. Looking forward to Wednesday when the high will be 84.

Rehearsal tonight, but my colleague doesn’t sound enthusiastic about it. I didn’t even LOOK at the script yesterday. I don’t know what was wrong with me, everything just seemed too much. Nora came for dinner and we had our usual giggly good time. I love Girl Stuff. I showed her my silver dancing shoes and the “Tiara of Death”* and she showed me pictures of the four new bikinis she bought with her birthday money.

This afternoon I’ve been invited to dress in my favorite outfit and bring along a picture of my younger self to the Audiovisual Studio. It’s for International Women’s week or something. I’ll bring along a copy of Barbara Love’s Feminists Who Changed America, 1963-1975, in case the AV head wants to see it. I’m in it.

To borrow a saying from anotherdemocrat:

Happy Friday, I hope nothing terrible happens today.

*Apparently this tiara contains lead and the wearer will be poisoned to death. I don’t think anything will happen between 6:30 to 9:30, which is when I plan to wear it. Only those resident in California must beware of this. H’mm. Would this make a good takeoff point for a murder mystery?

  12. Good afternoon, meeses! Friday …

It is 64 degrees, sunny but breezy. When I got up this morning, it was 41! The moon was up in the western sky, still very bright.

I had another day that started with plans to get things done and got fractured. Thankfully, I got done what needed to get done and I have the weekend to catch up on the “wish I could have gotten dones.”

No one is sad that Noem got fired. The dumb looking guy from Oklahoma will probably be better for FEMA but probably just as bad for people who don’t look ‘Murican enough. I don’t like Noem but I am pretty sure that an incompetent male would not have been fired.

    See all y’all later!

  13. The high for the day was just 70 just after midnight. It’s 56 right now and with a litle upping and downing is going to stay that way until it starts dropping again just before sundown. It’s also dark enough the PV system is still in night mode. Yesterday we generated 11.5 KWHs and the m-t-d is at 54.41 – we haven’t had a single day’s generation reach the average of what out daily would have to be to reach that hopeful goal I set last Sunday. At this rate we’ll be lucky to reach the “at least goal” and unfortunately likely to set a new low.

We did get .8″ rain overnight, which we seriously need, and might even get a little more today. Maybe. When I look out the back yard I see green and white. The spirea and Bradford pear are both blooming and the grass is looking vibrant. Still a few daffs blooming as well. More like the March springs of my childhood in Houston and young womanhood in Austin – well except for the Bradford pear, it would have been redbud trees instead. Definitely wrong for NW AR in March. But it’s beautiful and I can enjoy that.

    Need to bake a bunch of potatoes today. I checked over the bag my son brought me last week and they’re trying to sprout and I’m seeing tinges of green. Good thing cooked potatoes stay good so long in the fridge. But for now I need to be about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

    • There are a lot of things looking way too springlike in certain parts of the country. I hope that they can survive the inevitable frosts and freezes.

I love redbuds! Every house I have owned has had redbuds planted; they are magical with their blooms becoming heart shaped leaves. I am pretty sure they don’t grow here. We are enjoying the desert blooms and the bats are pleased to see cactus fruit a bit earlier than usual.

  14. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

It is 45 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 72. Partly cloudy skies are in the forecast. Another week – at least – of rollercoaster temperatures until we settle into our more typical early spring which is morning lows in the 60s and daytime highs in the mid 80s. The local paper said that this is one of the warmest winters, not good news because we need snowpack in the mountains for our reservoir. There is a big fight brewing over Colorado River water and how much Colorado is using (misusing?) before it reaches the shared reservoirs used by Arizona, California and Nevada downstream. I really wish they would stop or slow down the building spree in the Phoenix area. It is big enough!

I will be ignoring the news as much as possible. I really don’t understand the Republican Party going all in on propping up the mentally unbalanced leader of their party and his grand schemes for exacting revenge and feathering his own nest. It sounds like they are banking on the SAVE Act passing with the Senate Republicans tossing the filibuster into the sh*t can and then winning elections by disenfranchising millions and controlling the counting of ballots in every state. There is no other explanation for their self-destructive behaviour.

I have a long list of things I have to do this weekend when I can control my schedule so I best get back to it.

    See all y’all later!

  15. Good Saturday morning, Meese! It’s 44 F. in Ashburn on another grey, cloudy day. The white birch trees (if that’s what they are) are so amusing: they’re bursting out of their gray overcoats and showing their white long johns underneath in the woods across the way. This always makes me laugh! The brown twin lakes are still there. Last night I checked outdoors and heard the rain falling. We are getting a decent amount of moisture, which may help with the drought.

Yesterday I put on a pretty dress (warm pink with white polka dots, midi length, elbow length sleeves) and some fake jewels and had my picture taken standing in the front of the fake fireplace in the Reading Room next door. Next Thursday there will be a party for Women’s Day, at which those of us who have been photographed will be entertained.

We’re rehearsing the play three nights a week and the day is rapidly approaching when we’ll rehearse five nights a week. I still don’t like the play and neither does anyone else I’ve talked to. Lots of people are out sick with the ‘flu or whatever. Honestly! Our director must be feeling maximum frustration. She told a friend of mine that this is the last play she’ll direct.

The news gets worse and worse. As there’s not a thing I can do about it, I will just have to ignore it. Meanwhile, my man George Russell got pole in the Formula 1 qualifying! Very happy to see that.

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond and hoping nothing awful happens. Haven’t seen the Moon for weeks!
