Weeks-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: July 12th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of a week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date) and, as is the case for this particular Welcoming, may run for a week or more. To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Just popping in to wish you a happy St. Swithin’s Day! Have been busy with errands the entire day. About to go up to the village to pick up dry cleaning, etc. etc. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  2. Denise’s god daughter (the swamp wytch) posted on Bluesky about an hour ago. Denise passed earlier today, surrounded by family. Rest in Power.

  3. It is morning, meeses. Thursday …

    I was up early trying to deal with the personal loss I feel with Dee’s passing. I am going to need some time to reflect on the last 18 years of knowing her, reading her words and learning from her. If you don’t see me for a few days, don’t be alarmed.

  4. Good morning. I’m at work, don’t know for how long. There’s flooding all around, my place is safe, but I’m sure some people won’t be able to drive in. I’m thinking about the people who are still recovering from last year’s floods, hope they’re not reliving that trauma. Makes my cold? allergies? or whatever seem like something I should be able to work through. Today I have added a back/hip ache, that’s the part that makes me think I’ll have to leave early. My hip is already saying how much it hates this chair.
    I said on Blue Sky last night that I think I just don’t actually believe Dee is gone. Intellectually, I know this to be a fact, but I really expect to see a post from her. It’s going to take a while to process.

  5. It’s 70 heading for 88 heat index 95 and foggy at the moment. Yesterday was cloudy and even some rain. Appropriate. We generated 9.46 KWHs and the m-t-d at 248.62 lost ground.

    As I said to Earicicle & basket last night on Discord, for almost 9 years I’ve daily boosted Dee’s Puerto Rico posts – the “promesa” she made to Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria that she wouldn’t let them be forgotten. If she didn’t post them here on Moose I checked her page at Xitter & Bluesky. I’ve boosted her Caribbean Matters and Black Music Sunday diaries across Xitter, Spoutible, & Bluesky since she started doing them. I’ve boosted other posts as I ran across them, but those were the ones I went looking for. There will be, no help for it, a different path forward. New habits will be made. But the ache won’t go away. (Earicicle said that with my permission, which I gave, she might put that comment into one of the diaries at DK so Dee’s family could see it.)

    It’s hard to get my day started without Dee’s morning greeting, as brief as it sometimes was. But people still need me to. So off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  6. Good Thursday morning, Meese, or is it? This day has got off to a very slow start. I feel down because Sister Denise died yesterday, my neighbor across the hall is being subjected to an MRI this morning, I’m still way overweight, and just as I’m about to leave the country, I have a toothache and a bunion problem. I can do something about the toothache—emergency visit to the dentist tomorrow—but my foot doctor only comes once every two months. Oh, well, I’ll think of something.

    I have tried about 20 times to donate to Sister Denise’s GoFundMe, but every time the little PayPal Wheel just spins and spins and doesn’t go through. Suppose I’ll have to wait until I can get hold of Nad’s address, somehow, and send a check. I can’t believe she’s gone. It’s like a heavy weight pressing on my heart.

    We have some haze owing to the wildfires up north, but NOTHING like what the people up north are having. Got to get ready for the secret book club at 1:30.

    Wishing as decent a day as possible to all the Pond. Sister Denise is gone. My heart is heavy.

  7. Good morning, 60 and sunny outside my windows today. I sat on my porch for some time last night thinking about Dee, feeling grateful for her presence in my life. Best wishes to all as we mourn her passing.

  8. I didn’t watch the pumpkin’s rant last night. When Jen Psaki started her speech justifying carrying it, I exited the app I watch MSNBC on and changed to a Rookie rerun. It has been a tough week and Nathan Fillion’s voice is so comforting. The song I posted on the earworm thread expresses my feelings exactly:
    The worst can’t kill what’s best in us
    But they can try
    America will rise
    Against the people of the lie
    (U2 – American Obituary)

    • Most of the reactions I saw to the garbage dumpster’s address was a gigantic yawn.

  9. It’s already 73 and the humidity’s 98% so I didn’t open up today. Yesterday we generated 17.86 so the m-t-d at 266.48 neither gained nor lost ground and is still behind.

    Hard to get started. Fragments of thought just circle in my mind on repeat. But there’s work to be done. So I’d best pull myself together and get to it. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  10. Good Friday morning, Moosekind. Gotta hurry, need to have an emergency appointment with the dentist. Already saw the vampire, who stabbed me twice because she couldn’t get any blood the first time.

    See you all later!

  11. Good morning, 60 and cloudy in Bellingham today. I have a hair appointment this morning and then I must work at my desk this afternoon. Managing passwords and log in info for all our online activity is getting increasingly complicated so I hope better organization will help. Best wishes to all.

  12. Good morning. I’m actually going to skip kickboxing today, I just don’t feel up to it. Though after the week that was, punching things has definite appeal.

  13. It’s already 78 heat index 80 so of course I didn’t open the house. Widget says going up to 91 heat index 96 but I bet both those go up at least 5 degrees higher than predicted. It has all this weary week. Yesterday we generated 15.47 KWHs and the m-t-d at 281.95 lost more ground.

    I need to ask Natalia to take more photos of Jenny. She’s still very much a kitten but she’s getting bigger and lankier. 2 weeks ago she could not only go behind the sofa she could go under it. Now she can still go behind the sofa but not under it.

    Start of another weary day without Dee. No Caribbean Matters to boost this morning. I’ll get used to it. Off to start the boosting I most certainly still have. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for Everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  14. Good Saturday morning, Meese. It’s still a Code Red here—apparently the DMV is one of two cities with the worst air pollution today—but that is supposed to change with the advent of storms at 4 p.m. Right now it’s 80 F. under smoky skies. This morning at 3:30 I watched a lightning show going on for quite a while. Occasionally the whole sky would light up. I was too comfortable to move, so did not get up to investigate.

    Yesterday was so filled with errands and whatnot that today I don’t feel like doing a thing. I will, however, do some laundry, and will AIM to go to the gym. My weight was up to the dreaded number this morning (that in which the middle digit was a 3). I feel mortified. I threw away all the sweets in my house, so what gives? Enough of that, it’s boring.

    Turns out that Tooth No. 14 is dying, which probably means a root canal is imminent. My dentist doesn’t do them, so I have to go down the road from here for a consultation on Thursday afternoon. I have a consultation with my doctor here Thursday morning. You should see what that wretched vampire did to my poor arm! OMG. I look like a Battered Woman.

    Several (female) members of the Drama Club were in tears yesterday because they thought we wouldn’t have a play this fall. However, over dinner last night in a Mexican restaurant, B. and I decided we’d co-direct the murder mystery. So conceivably the tears will dry up.

    I do think [editor: your plan] sounds like a good solution. I miss Sister Dee. I may stop by GOS to see how her fundraiser is going. I wish I could figure out what is going wrong with my attempt to contribute.

    I’m expecting my BFF to stop by this morning with an annotated script for the murder mystery, so will say goodbye for now. Hope everyone will have a good day. Curst be the knaves and bless the saints!

    • As I mentioned above, someone was going to set up and share a PO Box for snail mail to Nad. You might see if they have that in place yet.

    • If your tooth is very very dead, you may need an extraction. I have had three, one that I replaced with an implant and two that were end teeth that I just left as craters. Extractions are a lot easier and a whole lot cheaper but if the tooth has teeth on both sides of it, you are better off trying to save it with a root canal. Implants are very expensive and very time consuming.

      Your endodontist, if he is an honest one, should tell you if the tooth is worth salvaging.

  15. Are we still checking in here? If so: Good morning. Tea is steeping, I’m watching Le Tour. I don’t have to do very much today, yay.

  16. It was 78 when I got online heading for 94 heat index 104 sunny at the moment with a very light breeze. Yesterday we generated 18.62 KWHs and the m-t-d at 300.57 is still behind but gained a little.

    Tired. Weary. Groggy. But having a kitten in the house helps. So does having responsibilities. I’d best be about mine. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

    • I wonder whether Goddess sent Miss Jenny Gray to your house to cheer you up. Having had kittens myself in the past, I know there are few creatures more comical!
