Weeks-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: July 12th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of a week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date) and, as is the case for this particular Welcoming, may run for a week or more. To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

    Morning low of 79 degrees in the Desert Southwest 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 99. Chance of afternoon rain.

    Have a great day, all y’alls!!

  2. Good morning. Even MSNBC is softpedaling their coverage of Graham. I get it, it is considered rude to “speak ill of the dead”; but if telling the truth about someone is speaking ill, that’s on them. I managed to not post Tramp the Dirt Down on the earworm thread on Blue Sky (saving that for the other senatorial death) but I did post one of the “joy” songs from last night’s diary.
    Sending good thoughts to Dee.

  3. Gee-Dee WordPress logged me out again as I was typing my morning greeting comment. Growl. I will now see if I can remember what I said.

    It’s 72 heading for 89 heat index 94, overcast and still. We got almost 2″ rain overnight which we certainly need. Yesterday we generated 16.83 KWHs and the m-t-d at 188.67 lost a smidge but is still on track.

    Just closed up the house – was only able to have it open for an hour but at least I was able to have it open. The boys are settling down for their morning naps. Jenny keeps trying to play with Bobbie. He’ll put up with it for a bit, then raise a paw in a way that tells her to back off, playtime’s over. Bless him, he’s teaching her about “soft paws” and “light bites” – something he never seems to have learned for himself. (& playtime is over. Jenny’s now watching squirrels.)

    Lang will be here this afternoon with stuff from Sam’s Club, mostly protein this week. Meanwhile I’d best be about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  4. Good Sunday morning, Moosekind. Joining in sending love and healing white light to our Sister Dee. Has anyone heard anything?

    Feeling down because the sky is gray. On days like this I just want to curl up in the green recliner and lose myself in a fictional world. However, it did rain, suddenly and fiercely , last night. I’d just made it home from the ghastly movie when it happened. This morning there was a spattering of raindrops on the windowpanes.

    Accompanying one of the gentlemen friends to a concert this afternoon, a mix of folksongs and Americana. Then he wants dinner at the nearest restaurant. Okay. Wish I knew the time and network for the next world cup game. Was delighted that England won yesterday, although I wouldn’t have minded Norway winning.

    It’s supposedly going to rain in 4 hours. Okay. At this rate, we may well catch up with rainfall for the year to date. As it stands right now, we’re only 1 inch under.

    Wishing a nice, peaceful Sunday, with no bad news, to all at the Pond. I don’t consider the passing of Wozname in South Carolina as bad news—more like, One down, Two to go.

    • South Carolina’s governor is apparently going to appoint himself to the Graham seat since he is term limited. I hope that creates a backlash – in Arizona, the Republican governor appointed the former Senator who had just been rejected by the voters in the last election to John McCain’s seat and she was wiped out in the general election. From what I understand, there is a Democrat running. Good luck to her!!

  5. Good morning, 58 and light clouds outside my windows today. Hans and Elsa spent the night at their house so ours seems very quiet. Sending thoughts of healing and comfort to Dee.

    • Thank you, Bfitz.

      From Ono:

      Dee is receiving hospice care at home and is also being looked after by loving family members. The damned tumor in her brain had suddenly begun growing at a very fast rate. She has pretty much lost all motor function and except for a few words even speech. Hospice has said that it is a matter of days, not weeks.

      Her grandson said she is not suffering, thank god. They get her up so she can see what is going on here. Apparently, she has been making a few donations to DK. Family members have helped her scroll the site. She loves DK and has for 18 years. I know so many of you love her back. Dee is why I joined years ago. Dee is why I’ve stayed.

      She may read this, so please send her, her husband – Nad, her grandson, Devin, and all their loving family – love, peace, strength, and comfort. Let Dee and those who love her know that we are with them

      Let Dee know that her lifelong fight for community, justice, and equality will continue. Support Black Kos. Stand against racists and sexists. Listen to one another. And plant a rose in her honor.

      Overwhelming sadness.

      Like Yas, I met Dee in person in Providence in 2012. I was glad to have blogged with her at DK and at the Moose where I moved later in 2012. She will always live on in her words and the many lives she touched.

      • I met Dee in person at NN 2016 in St. Louis. Yes, she will always live on in her words and the lives she touched. Like ours.

  6. Not the greatest of mornings. I woke up before 4, got up, came downtown and walked. But now my stomach is unhappy. The thing is, I should have slept well, I was exhausted from cooking. And I don’t know what made my stomach mad.

    I wrote about Dee in the vigil diary. I’ll just say here that I’m lucky to have known her. And I’ll repeat that the world is a better place for her having been here.

  7. It’s 71 heading for 90 heat index 92 sunny and still at the moment. Yesterday we generated 11.97 KWHs and the m-t-d at 200.64 lost enough that it’s no longer on track. We shall see what the day brings.

    Hard to get the energy up to do anything today. I need to close up the house. Jenny to the vet today for her next round of vaccines. Worried about Cloud. He’s having trouble getting up and down. But he’s walking OK and eating just fine. Meanwhile I’d best be about my boosting day. Holding Denise in my heart. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  8. Good Monday morning, Moosekind. Is it already 9:30? We have 75 F. on Ashburn on a beautiful day for a change, and the temp. will go up to all the 8s.

    Can’t think of much of anything except our Sister Denise. I’ll get ready to go to the gym now. Wish I could donate to the fundraiser but will have to wait until Wednesday, when there’s actually money in Ye Olde Exchequer.

    Glad Hans and Elsa are well enough to spend the night at home. Hope Cloud will do better as the day goes on. Guess what, we are only one-quarter inch under normal for rainfall for the year to date! Yep, old Ashburn-in-the-middle-of-nowhere is catching up!

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond and a peaceful passage for our beloved sister.

  9. Good morning, meeses! Monday …

    It is 77 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 91. It is clear right now but there is an 86% chance of rain later today and tonight. Last night we had clouds and rain off and on. I like not having to water the plants! We will be on a typical monsoon cycle for the next week: clouds gather in the afternoon, possible rain, clouds gather again over the mountains in the evening, possible rain. We have not seen a lot of rain but in the desert, any rain is appreciated.

    I couldn’t sleep thinking about Dee and how we could get in touch with her to let her know that we are thinking of her. So I got out of bed around 2am, wrote a quick post and then tried to figure out how I would get her or Ono a link. This morning I dug out my DK login, was able to log in via a convoluted pathway of email accounts. I left a comment in Ono’s diary and then DMed Ono. She is going to make sure that Dee sees our post and our words. I vowed to not log in again but for Dee I made an exception. I have mellowed over the years and while I would never blog there again, there is no reason to be so rigid. I want to track the Dee diaries.

    I have a stack of things to work on today. I got a lot done over the weekend but more things got added. Today I will drop off my ballot for our July 21st primary election, go pick up a pair of glasses I had ordered a few weeks ago and then drop off some returns at the UPS Store. Then nap!!

    See all y’all later!

  10. Good morning, 53 and sunny in Bellingham today. We all slept late so I’m really slow getting my day underway. Ron just left for a walk, Hans and Elsa are at their house for the day, and after a bit of desk work I want to go outside and just be in the garden. Best wishes to all.

  11. Good morning. Heavy rain and possible flooding here. Freaking people out because it’s the anniversary of the floods that killed 140 people. We’re in moderate/severe drought, so rain is good but not this much at once. That’s all my news. All good thoughts to Dee and her loved ones.

  12. It’s 71 supposedly heading for 91 heat index 93, sunny, and still at the moment. Yesterday we generated 19.04 KWHs and the m-t-d at 219.68 still isn’t on track but it gained a smidge.

    Sending Energy to Dee and family. Still getting used to her not being online. Still getting used to the idea of her not being here at all. In this time-space continuum. I know she’ll be somewhere. Being the special person she is, doing the Good Work in whatever time-space continuum she’s in. But. . . that only helps a little.

    Working on getting an online friend housed. We’re really close and I think we can finally pull it off. The RV she currently lives in is in worse shape than the one Aji lived in. We can’t get her an actual home like we did with Aji. (Heck, I doubt in the current world we could have gotten Aji’s house built.) But we can get her the down payment and closing costs for a tiny house on wheels to go into the RV park space she has (with enthusiastic permission of the manager) – something that has good wiring, good plumbing, no leaks, and actual insulation. And working appliances. None of which does she have RN.

    Need to close up the house and be about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  13. Good morning, meeses! Tuesday …

    It is 75 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with 74% humidity! We ended up with 1.22″ of rain yesterday with an inch of it in a two hour period of time between 3pm and 5pm. Needless to say, we had a lot of flooding throughout the valley and the commute home was slow and scary for some. The expected daytime high today will be 93 with sunny skies until about 1pm when the monsoon cycle starts again. There is a 43% chance of afternoon rain and a 58% chance of evening rain.

    In a decent world, the people who turned ICE into the gestapo would be run out of office and never allowed near the levers of power again. In the America created by lies from the Sanders wing of the Democratic Party, by dupable voters and by ignorant non-voters, they are given more power. The recent murderous rampage of ICE is, in my mind, a planned exercise to scare the crap out of everyone so that they stay home and don’t vote. A pundit on BlueSky suggested that the plan was to create so much anger that it would generate a summer of riots that would allow the tRump malAdminstration to federalize the voting in the November elections and keep their Congressional majorities. Goddess help us, it may very well work. I never thought I would root for inflation – the only hope is that people look at gas prices and the price of food and decide that they can’t give the Republicans another election cycle.

    Yesterday was a day of errands and naps to I have a little catching up to do. I don’t think I have anything left on my to-do list that will take me out of the house and I am grateful for that.

    See all y’all later!

  14. Good Tuesday morning, Meese, ’tis Bastille Day! (Let’s pull down that stupid ballroom!) It’s another gorgeous morning here, so I went for a walk early—did .95 of a mile. Came back and had coffee, which has restored me to life, will go to the gym for treadmill and rowing. I can read on the treadmill, and it’s a good thing, too, because I completely forgot the Biography Book Club is meeting on Thursday! I bought Notorious RBG from the mighty South American river. After that Paul Newman biography, wherein he disclosed that he drank 10 beers a day, and top of that, whisky, I decided never to read a biography about a male again.

    From 12:30 to 1:30 I need to help my BFF work out the schedule for the Drama Club’s 2027 performances, then get my hair done.

    Still thinking about our beloved Dee. Will go over to the Great Orange Satan and check on the latest news.

    I heard from the author whose book I edited. She asked her husband to send me a check. (She’s in Florida with her daughter, he’s here.) She said she’d made all the “track changes” and that she is very pleased! This is good news, because I was a bit rough on the dialogue tags.

    Also need to work on editing my friend’s eulogy. I refused to let him pay me for it, because I loved his late wife. Feeling much more upbeat today because the weather is so nice (it’ll be 100 F.-plus tomorrow and Thursday), and I walked past some trees with clumpy white flowers that smell like lilac. And I won’t watch Mango Face’s speech tomorrow! Howzat for a plan?

    Wishing a good day to all the Pond, healing energy to Hans and Elsa, and energy to our Sister Denise.

    • The DK diary that Ono posted a couple of days ago is still gathering comments and updates from Ono. I suspect that it will be the place where we read about Dee’s passing. I asked Ono to let me know and also let me know when her final tribute diary is posted. I can’t read the GOS posts and comments pages because I found out that it still triggers me so I am going to only read off of links.

    • Bastille Day – the commentators on Le Tour kept not-quite-cheering for a French rider to win today. It was not. The Slovenian who just turns on his turbo boosters did. No, I’m not accusing him of cheating. He seems like a good guy.

  15. Good morning, 57 and sunny in Bellingham today. Just waking up to a very quiet house…..Hans and Elsa are at their house and the builders working behind us are not pounding through rocks yet. The building lot is very steep and the big earth moving machines look very precarious. The owners got permission to remove several large fir trees so I hope the slope stay stable when the winter rains come. They want us to remove 2 of our trees so their view is better but needless to say that’s not happening. Fortunately the new city arborist is aware and supports us. I should take my coffee outdoors while it’s quiet but I’m comfortable where I am. Best wishes to all.

    • Hold firm! I can’t believe the gall of the new owners asking you to remove your trees so that their view is better!! Odd way for them to introduce themselves to the neighborhood. :::shaking my head:::

  16. Well, yesterday was interesting. Flooding all around the area, and we’re getting more rain today. I’m okay, at the top of a hill, but it’s all around the area. And then my allergies just went nuts. I don’t know why since I never left the house, but so much sneezing I had to log off from work. Lucky today is my 2nd wfh day, I’m going to at least work this morning, but I don’t want to push it. I woke up approximately 500 times last night (okay, slight exaggeration) and heated up a washcloth to put on my painful sinuses. So there’s not enough caffeine in the world to keep me awake all day.

    • FYI: It looks like France celebrated Bastille Day by losing to Spain in the men’s World Cup soccer tournament.

      • No Tour win, and they lost in the World Cup. I feel bad for them.

  17. Good morning, meeses! Wednesday …

    It is 81 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 93. Clear skies now, rain chances 70% beginning with rain at 3pm. The next 5 days will be cooler than normal with overnight lows in the low 70s and highs in the upper 80s. Plus rain predicted all week. The 2026 monsoon season is meeting expectations! I have not seen the moon for a few days because of the clouds and because she is so thin, only 1.8% illumination. She will be difficult to see in the daytime.

    There is no new news on Dee. The sadness at her loss hits me in waves. I go about my business, greeting the day and then realize again that after 14 years of seeing her words on our Welcomings page almost every day, they are not here and never will be again. Last night, someone on BlueSky was referring to the work of the Young Lords and my immediate thought was “I should make sure Dee sees this” then I teared up and closed the site.

    Today is Microsoft Patch Tuesday plus 1 when computers all over the world try to boot up after having updates pushed to them by Microsoft. It is a day of great anxiety for me that repeats itself every month. When I managed computers that were part of a network domain, I was able to control the timing of the updates and monitor them. Now the servers are all gone and the computers I still manage are on their own to get updates and the only thing I can do is clean up the messes left behind. And there are a lot of them because a trillion dollar corporation can’t be bothered to test their patches and often create havoc at the local computer level. Grrrr.

    See all y’all later!

  18. It’s already 75 heat index 79 – no, I didn’t open the house this morning – overcast and still. Yesterday we generated 19.48 KWHs and the m-t-d at 239.16 gained enough ground to be back on track. A status we’re going to lose today if the clouds don’t clear off soon.

    Yesterday was a real rollercoaster with my friend (and us as we followed along) – not enough for a novel but definitely a short story. We raised the down payment (yay) then 2 hours later she’s returning part of the money saying she’d pay us back “come hell or high water” – at first she thought her house had been torched. Then when the news got to her that no, it was the agent’s house & he’d disappeared with her & bunch of other people’s money. That’s when she was told it had been a scam and she started trying to pay people back. People who sent it right back to her and saying “we’re not taking your SSI – if you ever have some other/added income talk to us about paying back”. Then, the company called and said even though the down payment was stolen, they’d send her the house if she’d pay $990 shipping. Which sounded like more scam. By then Word was getting out in her community. And her community said, “This is not happening to her.” Phone calls were made, more community was contacted, people were reminded of how she’d helped them with their insurance for their sick kid/get on Medicaid/get their SNAP back, favors were called in, the right people were leaned on. And 7 hours after the first devastating news that she’d been scammed of the down payment and wouldn’t be getting out of that toxic RV. . . she’ll be getting her house this weekend for the gas money to haul it, the old RV’s being towed off for the salvage value, and she’s packing up what the RV hasn’t already destroyed. Keep prayers up – she’s not in it yet – but whew! Talk about drama in real life. And the value of a caring community.

    Always love to Denise. I miss her so much already. I keep going to her Bluesky page to boost her stuff – habits are hard to break – and of course there isn’t anything there to boost. Holding her in The Light and in my heart.

    Now I’d best be about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}
