Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: July 27th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

    Morning low of 75 degrees in the Desert Southwest 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 102. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

    Have a great day, all y’alls!!

  2. Good morning. Tea is steeping, waiting for the last stage of the Tour. The women’s Tour started yesterday, I’ll watch that later. The news is covering the Texas redistricting effort — even though Epstein is still the A block, at least they’ll talk about it sometime.

  3. It’s 80 heading for 93/heat index 103 and off and on sunny. Yesterday we generated 16.47 KWHs and the m-t-d at 439.97 lost a little ground. We’ve 5 generating days left in July.

    Yesterday was a very sad day for Amelia/Earicicle – her cat Winston crossed the Rainbow Bridge. This is only 2 months after basket lost his cat Bentley, whom she also loved and took care of as best she could while basket was at work or out of town. (Feeding, medications, litterbox detail – all that sort of stuff.) The only good news is that, although she wasn’t on duty, the vet who came out and euthanized Bentley came out and did Winston. He died safe and comfortable at home on a pillow on his mommy’s lap. She’s devastated, of course. There’s still one cat in that household so the routine will go on. I hope she takes comfort from that. I did.

    Vacuuming’s done. My back is very unhappy with me. But I’ve taken some Ibu and have the ice pack on it. And now I need to be about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  4. Good Sunday morning, Moosekind! It’s 82 F. on a beautiful morning, with a little breeze stirring the foliage on the trees. Flawless blue sky at the moment, but They say it will cloud over later on. Last night after we went to bed we had a thunderstorm and a half! The lightning show woke me up. It went on for quite half an hour. I’m too deaf without my hearing aids to hear the thunder, but Dearly, whose hearing is excellent, assured me there was plenty of it. For all the histrionics, however, there wasn’t much rain.

    Dearly is sleeping off A Proper Breakfast before the race begins. I’ll have to check BBC Sports to see who’s pole, second, and third. The wretched grocery store did not have a quiche Lorraine, so we’ll have scampi tonight with green salad. Hope very much to get some work done today, July is fading fast.

    Mailed M’Daughter’s birthday presents to her in the Icebox State today. Hope she receives the package before she departs for Minneapolis to see Grandson.

    Bfitz, I’m so glad you were able to get the apples and pears! I love them. I used to make apple and pear pie with white wine when we lived at home. The last few years the deer stripped our pear tree just when the pears were ready to be picked, but the apple trees continued to bear. Never made apple butter, but I did make applesauce for the grandchildren, as well as Apple Yorkshire, Apple Meringues, and Apple Crumble.

    Now, with pears, you can bake them with a pat of butter and a teaspoon of vanilla, no sugar needed. They’re delicious!

    Oh, lawks, I must stop thinking about dessert (or “desert,” as people seem to spell it nowadays), and get on with things.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond, and may Sekhmet the Blood Drinker treat the scumbags in the current administration as they deserve.

    • {{{Diana}}} you can bake apples the same way – although I prefer a sprinkle of cinnamon rather than vanilla – and they’re also delicious. Moar {{{HUGS}}}

  5. Monday Meese. Temps going back up here in Kingston today – 92 predicted.

    • Sad news about Stewie’s injury especially with a rematch of the Championship Series on the horizon. That Atlanta Dream team is on a serious roll – beating the Mercury at home, the Lynx at home and giving you a serious run for your money last week. Last night, it looked like the Phoenix Mercury finally figured out who to put on the floor together when they have their full roster available – it took a while!

  6. Good morning. Did my walk, with a teensy bit of running. It is 78 degrees, so somewhat unpleasant for activity, but gotta get it done. Monday. Sigh.

  7. It’s 79 heading for 96/heat index 106 and sunny at the moment. Yesterday we generated 17.85 KWHs and the m-t-d at 457.59 neither gained nor lost ground. 4 production days left in July.

    According to the widget, the heat wave breaks on Thursday – and we might even get actual rain and not just clouds in the afternoon- so we just need to survive the heatwave for another 3 days. Counting today since we’re just getting started.

    Amelia/Earicicle is blaming herself for not somehow knowing what was wrong with Winston and being able to save him/give him another 8 or so years he “should” have had. It would have taken magic of course because none of the vets, regular or emergency, managed to find anything until early last week. And even then they didn’t manage to figure out how severe the issue was. The Friday evening visit at least put Winston in the vet hospital but it wasn’t until the Saturday morning shift vet took a good look at Winston that anybody knew Winston was out of options and almost out of time. If anybody’s to blame it’s the vets over the last 2 months who apparently thought they were dealing with a hysterical woman they could make nice noises at and ignore anything she said. She did what she could. And made sure his last few hours were spent where he felt safe. At home. Doesn’t help her with the pain of loss.

    Back hurts but I’m just icing this morning. The Ibu doesn’t seem to make a difference and I don’t need to be taking it regularly. Meanwhile, off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

    • We might see some rain on Thursday; I wonder if it is part of a weather system that will impact us both? It won’t cool us down though. Straight line of lows in the upper 70s to highs around 105 in the foreseeable future. Fortunately I can stay inside and avoid the heat.

      • Our forecast is showing 4 whole days with highs in the 80s and overnights in the 60s. Not cool by any stretch but definitely cooler – and I should be able to open up the house for a few hours on those days. (The cats will like that. LOL.)

  8. Good morning, meeses! Monday …

    It is 79 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 104. Sunny skies are in the forecast although right now there are a lot of clouds over the mountains. Last night I saw the prettiest little waxing crescent over the buildings to the west before moonset. There was some lingering sunset colors at the horizon and just to the right of her and she was at 12% illumination.

    It should be embarrassing to every American that our federal government is letting food rot rather then give it to the starving people of Gaza simple on “principle.” I am not sure how people claiming to be followers of Jesus Christ can support, instead of shun and vilify, a political party that promotes genocide and starvation. I hope that when they present themselves at the pearly gates looking for a place because they successfully banned gender-affirming care and the poors getting food and health care that they are cast out. Bastids.

    I have many things to do as I prepare to step away from work for a few days and only do the things I want to do for about a week.

    See all y’all later!

  9. Good morning, 60 and clear in Bellingham today, Yesterday was interesting and super busy but ended well. By 3:00 pm it was apparent I needed to change plans for a patio dinner because I could barely walk, son #1 was aching all over (fatigue does that to him following covid), son #2 fell in his garage and injured his knee, and the wasps were aggressive. So cold drinks were in the frig, we cooked together in the kitchen, and dinner was in the dining room…..less work and safer walking for everyone. But best of all it was a fun and relaxing family time and we all went to bed early. I’m resting my knees today and will go to the ortho walk in clinic tomorrow to see if another round of cortisone injections will help. I’m restless, but solitaire and YouTube is entertaining me. Best wishes to all.

  10. Hello, Moosekind, from boiling Ashburn! It’s 88 F. under cloudless skies. We went to Costco this morning. The day has completely run away from me, so will just say “hi,” and wish everyone a good evening.

  11. Tuesday Meese. Well, today is predicted to be a real scorcher here in Kingston – predicting 96. Sigh.

    Today is another big anti-LUMA demo in PR. Nothing in our news (not surprised)

    Demonstration today:

    “Last week, Dalmau held meetings in the U.S. Congress with nine Democratic representatives and two Republicans, with whom he discussed his call for a status assembly to promote the decolonization of Puerto Rico, the exclusion of the Puerto Rican archipelago from cabotage laws, and oversight of the process of rebuilding the power grid.”

  12. Good morning. Happy to be wfh today. Just like the quiet and calm. Special session continues here, all the awful & stupid things. Ugh.

  13. Good morning, meeses! Tuesday …

    It is 81 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 102. Sunny skies are in the forecast. I thought sure we would get rain yesterday afternoon as the clouds gathered over the mountains and big clouds were also visible to the west. The weather guys say our current monsoon season is dryer than normal even though our last storm was extremely productive as far as rain goes. I’m still hoping for rain on Thursday although the chances now are 10% instead of 46%.

    I have errands to run this morning and I am finishing up a project for a client, the last one before my hiatus begins. I am not going anywhere except “away from my computer” although I might take a day trip later in the week.

    See all y’all later!

  14. It’s 76 heading for 97, heat index 107, and sunny at the moment. Yesterday we generated 16.59 KWHs and the m-t-d at 474.1 lost a little more ground. We should be able to reach 500 by end of month. I think. I hope. But not much more. We shall see what we shall see.

    I’ve just put the laundry on and hope a breeze springs up by the time the washer is done. It’ll be over 80 by then and I certainly don’t want to wait any later in the day to get the clothes hung out.

    My friend has written her response to the proposed “consent decree” and will run it by her lawyer this morning before sending it. Hopefully her soon to be Ex will go with it and they both can sign off on it. They’ve still got to deal with the bank to transfer the mortgage out of her name and the Circuit Clerk to get her name off the deed but those shouldn’t, hopefully, be issues. Almost over.

    Meanwhile, my back hurts. Hauling the laundry, especially wet, is not going to be comfortable. But it needs to be done so I’ll do it. And try to remember to call the insurance company and get them to send me a list of providers on the HMO so I can find a chiropractor who’s covered. (My old one isn’t.) But for now I’d best be about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  15. Good Tuesday morning, Meese! We’ve a mackerel sky at the moment, although earlier the blue was flawless this morning. Right now in Ashburn it’s 84 F., going up to 94 F. “They” are predicting rain for Thursday and Friday.

    I’m waiting to be picked up to go to Cardiac Rehab. early is waiting for the arrival of the carpet cleaners. They are to clean the living room and office carpets of bloodstains where we sacrificed a cockerel to some Pagan god or other—just kidding! Because he’s on Coumadin, a very nasty medicine, Dearly bleeds if the slightest thing causes a cut, and something did.

    Today’s plans include getting my hair done and, it is to be hoped, working on the monologue. It’s time for me to leave, so will wish all at the Pond a good day, and PLEASE, someone, send food to the starving in Gaza!

  16. Good morning, 56 and sunny in Bellingham today. I stayed quiet and off my legs all day yesterday so my ankles are better but my knees are bad. I hope the walk in clinic will be helpful this afternoon. Best wishes to all.

    • Good luck! I know you are struggling with the knees that can’t be safely replaced. I hope the doctors give you some relief from the pain.

  17. Good morning, meeses! Wednesday …

    It is 82 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 104. Sunny skies are in the forecast. It was windy when I went out on my deck this morning which makes everyone in wildfire country nervous. There is a chance that we might get rain tomorrow but the monsoonal rains from Mexico seem to be starting further east this year – New Mexico is getting frequent storms that bypass us.

    I have been reading about the celebration of the 250th birthday of Tucson on August 23rd. That is the anniversary of the establishment of the Spanish presidio, Presidio San Augustín del Tucson, in August 1775, when it was part of Mexico (before the Gadsden “Purchase”). The city commissioned murals to celebrate the birthday and they are magnificent. I love this part:

    The public art project for this 250th birthday also honors over two millennia of local cultural history. Every mural displays each of the four artists’ interpretations of the area’s history, from the early Hohokam people before the year 1000 to modern-day Tucson.

    There is a map of where the murals are and I hope to tour the city and see some of them in person.

    My WNBA team plays the Racist Enabling Indiana Fever tonight. I am sure the christian white nationalists in the stands will heartily boo DeWanna Bonner, who left their team and joined the Mercury, and all the other Black women who are play for our team. I hope everyone shows up with their “A” game to silence them and refuses to engage. I was thrilled to see the Golden State Valkyries, my second favorite team, recover from their thrashing by the Connecticut Sun, and beat the Atlanta Dream in Atlanta last night. I like the Dream a lot, also, but the Valkyries have an Asian woman coach and a lot of gritty, fun to watch players.

    See all y’all later!

  18. Good morning. I did a lot of work yesterday, no exercise. Taking early lunch today and going to kickboxing. Haven’t heard any news out of the legislature, but that doesn’t mean they’re not doing awful stuff. Anyway, hi.

  19. It’s 78 heading for 97/heat index 107, and sunny at the moment. Yesterday we generated 18 KWHs and the m-t-d at 492.17 gained a small amount of ground. If the “partly sunny” part of the forecast holds we should reach 500 today. It may not. There’s also a possibility of afternoon rain which definitely means clouds whether or not we get the water we really need. It’ll all depend on when those clouds move in.

    I’m certainly looking forward to the break in the heat starting tomorrow. Lammas Week will be in the 80s with overnights in the 60s. August is still summer hot and it’ll go back up into the 90s with overnights in the 70s after the respite. But it is a respite and I’ll enjoy. It’s about the only good news I know of.

    Meanwhile I’ve ice on my back which is helping some. Off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}
