Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: August 10th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

Morning low of 79 degrees in the Desert Southwest 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 100. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast.

Have a great day, all y’alls!!

  2. Good Sunday morning, Moosekind! It’s 63 F. here at sunrise. Have to fly around today, trying to clean up this place because non-family members are coming over to help Don with BritBox. We’ll meet for brunch first, a ghastly concept, at noon in the nice restaurant down the hall and around the corner.

Felt so much better yesterday with the three new meds. Hope to feel even better today. I did experience itching on the skin of my neck at 4 a.m., but got up and put the cortisone cream on. I’m going to make the early morning tea now, because I want to go to the garden and water it. This will be our last nice day before Doggust returns tomorrow.

Saw Herself last night! At the hour I viewed her She looked creamy-white, but my friend saw her later and said She was silvery-white, and my friend could actually see the craters on Her face. Feel so blessed to have seen Her when she was full: it’s rare that I get to see her at all.

Did y’all see Jim Lovell’s obit yesterday? He was a wonderful man. The movie, “Apollo 13,” was one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. I could watch it endlessly.

Time to make the Early Morning Tea. Later!

  3. Sunday Meese. Looks like we are heading back into hot weather here – 90’s ahead.

I’m pissed off. Ask yourself why, thousands of Puerto Ricans with no potable water to drink for more than a week was not major news here on the mainland?
The MSM doesn’t give a flying f*ck about PR, and neither does the Orange dude occupying the White House.

  4. Good morning. I fell back asleep yesterday & didn’t make it to kickboxing. This morning, my tea is made, I’m thinking about the recipe for breakfast that I’ll make this afternoon. It’s supposed to be bars, but doesn’t make something slice-able. I think I’ll just make bars as I mix it. Anyway, today: church, lunch, making next week’s breakfast.

  5. It’s 80 heading for 93, heat index 100, and partly cloudy. Also breezy. But the clouds & the breezy don’t make up for the heat. It’s not exactly warm bath water out there but it’s close. Yesterday we generated 17.77 KWHs and the m-t-d is currently 145 – on track for 450 and gaining on 500. We shall see what we shall see.

I did a quick glance at the moon last night, while she was far enough west to clear my house and in a gap in the trees, but not too clearly. It was hazy and she was too close to the streetlight. But I still saw her and that was good.

Earicicle/Amelia is anxiously waiting to hear from the adopt-a-pet people. My friend is waiting is little more patiently for the next step in the divorce to happen. I’m not sure what I’m waiting for. LOL.

    Didn’t vacuum this morning but did run the dust mop over the most cat-furred areas. It’ll have to do. My back is still not happy but it’s a lot less unhappy that it would have been if I’d vacuumed. Meanwhile, I’d best be about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  6. Light clouds and a breezy 75 in Bellingham today. RonK is feeling much better so he’s cooking a Greek dinner for tonight. I’m a few days behind him so it’s encouraging to see his energy coming back. I am feeling restless so guess that’s progress. Best wishes to all.

  7. Monday Meese. Hot weather continues here in Kingston.

  8. Good morning. Made my foot angry yesterday, with cooking and housework, was standing for too long. Did my walk this morning, shorter but still something. Anyway, happy Monday.

  9. It’s 75 heading for 92, heat index 98, and clouding up. Says rain. It also says rain chance is 9%. (Tomorrow, when I want to do laundry, is when the rain chance hit 25%. sigh.) Yesterday we generated 15.64 KWHs and the m-t-d at 160.47 is on track and gaining. We shall see what today brings. Or doesn’t.

The moon is tracking high enough in the sky that I not only got a glimpse of her through the trees when I drew my curtains for the night, but a very clear sight of her when I got up to go to the bathroom (& opened the curtains so she could shine on my bed/me) and another clear sight of her when I got up at 6:30. Not quite full any longer, this 1st of the Harvest moons (Aji’s people call this one the Ricing Moon b/c they harvest wild rice this time of year) but with my vision I can’t tell the difference. LOL.

Apparently somebody else got Dwight and Earicicle/Amelia did not react well. (Blaming herself – that somehow her application letter was so bad they pulled him off the site rather than giving him to a crazy person like her. Yes, I know that’s not a healthy, or exactly sane, reaction. Her father’s a “minister” so you can guess where that came from. Her emotional health is one of the reasons she needs a support cat.) My friend texted her husband that she’d be coming by to pick up her clothing yesterday – and found him gone and the locks changed when she got there. In a sense I’m glad. When he’s been “reasonable” for long enough, she forgets her own safety and tries to go there by herself. In another sense, well, he’s just his usual nasty manipulating self in keeping her from getting her stuff, even after he assured her that she was welcome to whatever she wanted from the house. And had to have changed those locks weeks, maybe even 2 months ago. That’s not a thing you can do in the hour it takes to get from the farm to that house.

    I’s best be about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  10. Good Monday morning, Moosekind! It’s 74 F. and rather cloudy here in Ashburn, heading for 89 F. today. No rain, of course.

Princesspat, hope the wretched Covid has not destroyed your sense of taste and smell. I have a friend who has experienced that. How miserable!

I am feeling so much better owing to the new meds that I called the Med Center to leave a message to that effect for the doctor who prescribed them.

Have LOTS to do today, but woke up with energy. Made blueberry muffins (blueberries are heavenly right now), had some for breakfast, distributed the rest among the neighbors. I need to get to the gym, my weight is creeping up horribly. Need to run to Trader Joe’s to get some OJ for Dearly. This morning I cut up a fresh peach for him, which he handsomely allowed was quite tasty.

I have a Drama Club Board meeting this afternoon at 3:30, the UU dinner at 5 p.m., and auditions for for the new play at 7 p.m. So you can see that today I’ll be busy as a swarm of fire ants!

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond, but for some of those Beyond (the bounds of decency, that is), well, the less said about that, the better!

  11. Good morning, meeses! Monday …

It is 79 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 99. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast. We had some storm clouds on the other side of the mountains last night but none of the rain made it here. Rain expected on Thursday. When I looked out over the green space this morning I saw moonlight – it appeared she was directly overhead which meant I would not likely see her as she moved to the west side of the sky. I was in the middle of an eyes forward project this morning and I forgot to break to take a look. Bad me!

Sounds like Ukraine is not going to acquiesce to tRump and Pooty-poo carving up the country. Good for him – I hope that Europe stands by him. From Borowitz (tongue firmly in cheek):

KYIV (The Borowitz Report)—Giving helpful advice ahead of peace talks in Alaska, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy suggested on Monday that Donald J. Trump offer Vladimir Putin “full sovereignty” over the state of Florida.

“If you are considering some kind of ‘land swap’ for peace, Florida should be on the table,” Zelenskyy said. “With Florida, you have cards.”

Explaining his rationale for a Russian annexation of the Sunshine State, Zelenskyy said, “There are already so many Russian-speaking people there, especially the oligarchs and criminals around Mar-a-Lago.”

Speaking from the Kremlin, Putin said he would “consider” an offer of Florida, but only if it did not include ownership of Ron DeSantis.

Yesterday was not a good day for my WNBA team. It is clear that we need a smarter coach, one who can pivot to “trying something else” when Plan A does not work. It was frustrating to see them run the same plays with the same people and somehow expecting that the results would be different. When players are cold, sit them down even if it makes them upset. We couldn’t even beat an Atlanta Dream team that lost two players in the 4th quarter, one to injury and one to “yelling at the refs.” We won’t go far in the playoffs.

Busy morning and then I have some errands to run so I best get myself ready.

    See all y’all later!

    • Saw that game Jan. Agree. Had mixed feelings because I root for your team, but also am a Te-Hina Paopao fan (As a Dawn Staley fanatic I follow all the former Gamecocks)

      • We love Paopao! She is such a joy to watch. It is tough to root against any team except the Evil Empire and the Racist Enabling Indiana Fever.

  12. Good morning, 76 and sunny in Bellingham today. Ron is picking blackberries so the season is changing, it’s an annual affair! Our son is here now to do a few things so time for me to hobble forth while I have his assistance. Best wishes to all.

Diana, last nights greek dinner was tasty so I am getting smell and taste back, big relief, thanks.

  13. Tuesday Meese. Hot and humid here in Kingston. Trying to wrap my head around DC.

    • I wonder if what is going on in DC is a dry run for martial law. See how much people will tolerate with sending in the national guard. If everyone yawns, then you take over NYC and Chicago.

This only works because the Secretary of Defense is a christian white nationalist who will do anything to please his MAGA boss.

      • Disgusting. I checked Costco the other day and they are no longer selling Opill. If you ask at the pharmacy window, they will still sell you Plan B or the generic equivalent. Last time I checked, contraception and abortion are still legal in Virginia. Checked the price of Opills in Target, found they were a dollar less than my stupid grocery store.

Martial law and the Republic of Gilead approach!

  14. Good morning. Another restless night, woke up 5 times (my watch tells me). Getting ready for wfh. I will log off early & exercise today.

  15. It’s 69 heading for 89, heat index 93, and overcast. Yesterday we generated 15.42 KWHs and the m-t-d at 175.9 is on track and gained a little more. We’ll see what today brings.

I need to do laundry but this entire week is supposed to be cloudy. Changes or rain are low, under 25%, but they’re still there. And the idea of picking up a basket of wet laundry with my back the way its been is, uhm, not appealing. But I still need to do laundry this week.

My elder cat Cloud isn’t acting particularly different than usual but he’s got a bald patch on his back leg. He’s not exactly a long-hair but he’s certainly not a short-hair and his fur covers it most of the time so I’m not sure how long this has been going on. But I called the vet clinic this morning. They don’t have an opening with the vet I prefer until Saturday afternoon. But I don’t think this is an emergency so I took it. He’s 14 and that’s definitely an elderly cat but. . . it would be nice to go a year or two between losing cats.

    Best be about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  16. Good Tuesday morning, Meese! It’s 77 F. on a sorta-sunny day, going up to 90 F. In fact, the whole week will be a hottie.

Yesterday I came home exhausted from all my activities, and the UU dinner, followed by auditions, did me in. Exciting plans are afoot with some of my colleagues, though—the Drama Club is going to mentor some of our student waiters for their talent show next spring, three of us want to possibly sing “The Pheasant Plucker” at the next Open Mic night, and a bunch of us are planning to dress up as Witches on Halloween.

We’ll know on Friday who was chosen for which roles in “The Art of Murder,” so I may be involved in rehearsals next week.

Got to get ready for Cardiac Rehab. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

  17. Good morning, 67 and sunny outside my windows today. I was in the garden for a few hours yesterday so I must be getting better, yay! It’s nice to feel tired from actually doing something. Best wishes to all.

  18. Good afternoon, meeses! Tuesday …

The day got away from me with lots of interruptions. It is 104 here.

    See all y’all later!!

  19. Wednesday Meese. Our forecast here in Kingston got switched – now we have heat and rain.
