Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: August 24th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

    Could Dying Reefs Fuel Ciguatera Poisoning?
    Caribbean governments are struggling to track and manage ciguatera fish poisoning. As oceans warm and coral reefs degrade in the region, some scientists fear the illness will become more common.

    • The WNBA this year seems to be a game of attrition – whoever survives with enough players left standing will be the winner. :(

      I hope the new Players Contract addresses the hard contact that seems to be okay (even promoted in the commercials!) and decides to enforce the rules that made the women’s game different from the men’s. They did it with women’s hockey and the game is way more fun to watch than men’s hockey; they can do it with women’s basketball – punish the hard fouls consistently so that the players we like to watch can stay on the floor.

  3. Kickboxing yesterday was quite therapeutic. This morning, tea is steeping and local news is…..less depressing than it will be when they cover the governor signing that damned gerrymander bill. Cold front coming next week — highs down to the mid 90s!

  4. It’s 71 heading for 90, heat index same as air temps, and sunny at the moment. Yesterday we generated 14.59 KWHs and the m-t-d while on track at 366.2 lost a little. We’ve 8 production day left in August.

    We’ve got a cool front moving overnight, supposedly with rain at least tomorrow. The rest of August isn’t supposed to see a high above 80 or a low above 62. Totally unusual for August but I’m happy with it. I think I’ll bake something. I haven’t had any of my muffin breads since the end of May. (My hands and joints can feel the change but so far they’re just a little achy and not causing any problems with actually doing anything.)

    Everything’s a waiting game right now. But I’ve done the vacuuming and pulled the sheets (I’ll put clean ones on later today) and have just finished my oatmeal, so I’d best be about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  5. Good Sunday morning, Moosekind! It’s 74 F., overcast, and gloomy in Ashburn today. Bfitz, we’re going to have fall temperatures here, as well, for next week! What does this portend? I do wish it would rain. Our little slice of Northern Virginia is 4 inches under for the year.

    I need to go over my lines for the play, type up my notes from the interview on Thursday, and aim for a first draft by COB.

    I made a chicken pie for yesterday’s dinner, and there’s so much left over we’ve decide to warm up the rest of it for tonight’s dinner. I’ll make a tomato salad and we have lots of fruit, cake, or ice cream for afters. This will enable me to get more done than if we have to waste time getting dressed up and sitting through a drawn-out-dinner process.

    I’d love to make Banana-Walnut Muffins for breakfast tomorrow (the apple muffins received rave reviews from the neighbors), but alas, I have very few walnuts. Oh, well.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

    • {{{Diana}}} it mostly means that the last time the Jet Stream flopped, it flopped south instead of north. It’s just as random as that. Your chicken pie sounds yum! Moar {{{HUGS}}}

  6. 71 and sunny in Bellingham today. It’s Ava’s 18th birthday but she was in the ER most of the night with a high fever from a GI infection so her birthday bouquet will wait until she feels better. Her dad fell in his garage several weeks ago and the stretched tendon is not healing so he has a surgery scheduled. And Ron’s knee is to painful to walk on so he is using one of the walkers we have on hand. Between canes, walkers and braces we’re a hobbling family! Best wishes to all.

  7. Monday Meese. 66 here in Kingston going up to 80.

  8. Good morning. My foot did not like my walk this morning. I may have to find a non-weight-bearing thing to do. Anyway, hi.

    • {{{anotherdemocrat}}} Yikes! Non-weight bearing is hard. Especially if you have get anywhere. Healing Energy. Moar {{{HUGS}}}

  9. It’s 64 heading for 72, overcast and supposed to be raining which of course it’s not. But it may yet. Yesterday we generated 16 KWHs and gained a smidge. Which is good because looking at the widget I doubt we’ll get 6 today. The m-t-d is 382 which is better than last year – a lot better – which figures since we were only producing for 12 days last year. The last week of August is partly cloudy to totally cloudy so I don’t know if we’ll make it to the 450 goal but hopefully we’ll at least make it over 400.

    My friend is very tired. But it’s only the 2nd week of classes and late registration is still going on so she went to work anyway. Basket seems to be doing OK. Earicicle/Amelia is exhausted and of course still grieving for her cat. Winston really was her emotional support. Haven’t heard from anybody else so I hope/assume that’s good.

    I’ve got molasses spice walnut bread in the oven. The house is beginning to smell lovely. Off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  10. Good morning, 60 and sunny outside my windows today. I didn’t water the patio plants last evening so I’ll need to do that soon but for now coffee, music and solitaire are keeping me busy. We’ll see if Ava is feeling well enough for a visit later this afternoon. Best wishes to all.

  11. Good morning, meeses! Monday …

    It is 95 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 99. Mostly sunny skies in the forecast although right now it is a bit overcast. This morning I clearly saw Orion’s Belt which reminded me that I have not seen that constellation for a while. It disappears from view from March until August and then stays visible through the Fall and Winter.

    I woke up Not Tired and got things done although not as much as I wanted to. I am trying to not let that bother me – I can always catch up mañana.

    See all y’all later!

  12. Good morning, meeses! Tuesday …

    It is 75 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 90. I wish I could say it was a “glorious” day but the humidity is too high to suit me. However, I won’t complain – it is nice to see temperatures below 80. The weather widget says that it will be mostly cloudy today with a pretty good chance for rain. Yesterday afternoon, we had a lot of storm clouds gathering over the mountains and there was rain somewhere because I could smell the creosote. A friend said that she got one drop of rain on her car so all the clouds and lightning were for others. I hope that whatever did fall landed where it was needed.

    It is difficult to read the news. Every day another norm is broken. Is there any possibility that the next occupant of the White House will be able to get all the gold out of literally every damn thing in the Oval Office? tRump is a constant embarrassment as well as an existential menace. Goddess help us all.

    Dee’s WNBA team won last night with Stewie’s return. Close game though!

    I have been waking up at 3am because I am done sleeping and my brain reminds me that I have many things to do.

    See all y’all later!

      • It was touch and go there for a while and I walked away when there were 42 seconds left and checked the score from my phone. I hate seeing disappointing outcomes in real time!!

  13. Diana’s account got locked and she could not unlock it because her email address was outdated and the Moose could not reach her!

    I think we have it sorted out. Waiting for Diana …

  14. Good morning. I am so grateful that I get 2 wfh days. Nothing in particular going on, just glad I didn’t go rushing out the door to be in a noisy office this morning.

  15. It’s 62 heading for 81 and while not sunny at least not as darkly clouded as yesterday. At least we got .4″ rain out of it. Yesterday we generated 3.79 KWHs and the m-t-d at 385.9 lost ground but is still on track for over 450. How long that will last depends on the sun/clouds.

    Yesterday University of AR Fayetteville was one of the apparently nationwide rash of fake active shooter dramas. The Brown Shirts/Red Hats creating the excuse for martial law. And the police responding to the active shooter “sightings” were certainly acting like Brown Shirts towards the faculty, staff, and students who’d obediently taken refuge in whatever lockable offices available during lockdown. I knew about it. I get the County Alerts. Natalia called me from lockdown to say she was OK, in the Chair’s office w/ 17 other people. Lang didn’t call. But he’s like that. He figures somebody will let me know if he’s not and to assume the best. Guys! (Sons, you really shouldn’t do that to your mothers. But I know you will anyway. sigh.) And being on the County Alert list, I also got the “stand down” call. Details I got when Natalia got home. Early, thank heavens. The Chair sent everybody home as soon as the police left. We shall see if Mike Huckabee’s good obedient little girl (our current guv) call for the National Guard as twitler wants her to.

    Anyway, personal stuff – cats & divorces – are still in waiting mode. And I’d best be about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  16. Good Tuesday morning, and thanks be to our wonderful BlogGoddess for letting me in! It’s filthy without a dip in the Pond. Hi, y’all (waving)!

    It’s a gorgeous morning here, all blue and gold and green, and 64 F. Whichever Goddess is in charge of the weather, thanks be to Her.

    A popular guy here at the Home is having surgery this morning on his carotid artery. He says the outcome is in God’s hands. I’m on tenterhooks until he’s home again. He’s such a sweet man! He gave an end-of-summer concert last Friday and his daughter played the violin as an accompaniment.

    Although last night’s rehearsal was tedious and exhausting, I did work on the article about the Astronomy Club after I came back. I hope the head of the club doesn’t think the beginning of the article sounds too disingenuous. Have just a bit more to add and then I’ll have the requisite 500 words. Unfortunately, I can’t work on it until later today, because after Cardiac Rehab I have to skedaddle to the Black Rock Bistro here to staff a Drama Club booth from 1 to 3 p.m., then I’ll be finished. Then, and only then, do I get to collapse for a bit.

    Glad to see everyone—Jan, I hope you can get some sleep Dee, glad to see you; and anotherdemocrat, working from home days are blissful. Wish everyone could enjoy them. My poor daughter-in-law has a 4-hour-a-day commute to her job at Union Station and back, so she doesn’t get to enjoy her life at all. Thank Goddess we’re approaching the time of year in which there are a lot of holidays.

    Must hurry to get ready for Cardiac Rehab. SO glad to see you all again! Bfitz, may the sun shine on your panels. We’re having autumn today, the high will be 77 F.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  17. Welp, under the if it weren’t for bad luck files. . . Natalia wasn’t feeling well last night or this morning and has been really exhausted for days. There were lots of reasons for all of that, but just in case, she wanted to test for COVID. I dug out my tests from the closet. Of the 6 I had, only 1 was still good. And yup. COVID. I don’t think I have it. We’ll have to see about more tests to find out. But we’re operating on the assumption that I don’t. Masking indoors. She’s mostly keeping to her room. She’ll use gloves in the kitchen. (I can’t, skin reacts to them. But I’ll wash my hands a lot.) HVAC fan going all the time w/ windows open at least a little to keep the air circulating. (I’ve got good filters on the HVAC system.) She needed the rest but this is a lousy way to get it. Good Thoughts/prayers are appreciated.

  18. Good morning. Got a lot of work done yesterday, despite a stupid hour-long meeting. One of the things they talked about is coming up with using standards for using AI. Here’s mine: No. Nope. Never. A technology that can’t tell you how many r’s in “blueberry”? That helped a teen write his suicide note? No thanks. Had a terrible night’s sleep – 6am and my Apple watch already has 6 hours of standing credit. So, super-interrupted sleep. Anyway, definitely going to kickboxing today. Hope everyone has a good day.

  19. Wednesday Meese. Have to spend the day writing. Weather is very cool here – but nice.

    Puerto Rico – writing about this latest mess for Saturday
