Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: October 5th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good Wednesday morning, Moosekind! It’s 68 F. in Ashburn, going up to the low 70’s. Tonight the low will drop to the 40’s.

    Will keep this mercifully short. It rained gently starting at 10 p.m. and lasted until 7:30 a.m. this morning, first we’ve had in weeks. Dearly is supposed to have an endoscopy or something today. The doctor never tells me anything.

    Talked to Younger Son last night and he said DIL is teleworking along with some others from her office because the boss messed everything up. She does not know whether she’ll be paid for it. I have to go to Costco and get gas. First time I will have done this by myself.

    Feel much better than I felt yesterday! Between stress and the Covid vaccine, I was useless. Anotherdemocrat, hope the Mohs surgery goes well! Princesspat, hope you will feel better today.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

  2. Good morning, 53 and mostly cloudy. So yesterday my knees were relatively stable but my ankle and feet joints were not, grrrrr! Living with advanced arthritis is a day to day accommodation and I’m slow to accept that reality. Oh well, I planted a few mums for fall color and today I’ll do a bit more. I must remember to keep my phone with me though because yesterday I forgot.
    I though about you all last night when the nearly full moon was shinning through the trees over the back patio. It was a pretty and peaceful moment. As always, my best wishes to all.

  3. Thursday Meese. Freeze warning here in Kingston this morning.

  4. Good morning. Got my walk before work done, still summer weather. It is supposed to get down to the 60s tomorrow morning. We’ll see. Anyway, I’m in the office, eating my healthy breakfast.

  5. It’s 52 heading for 78 and mostly sunny at the moment. (I even got to see the moon for a few moments right after I got up as she was starting her descent in the western sky.) Yesterday we generated 8.12 KWHs and the m-t-d at 73.78 lost a little ground but is still on track.

    After a rather fraught day yesterday, Natalia’s ex made his “threat” to call his lawyer good. We all sighed with relief when he made that threat. And as expected he came back to “magnanimously” give it one more try to wrap things up “in a civil manner” (inferring that she was the one being uncivil, of course) and said if she could be there at 1:30 tomorrow (today now) to get all her stuff let him know by 5 pm and he’d be there to let her in. She of course immediately contacted “her team” and got the OK, then emailed him back to say she’d be there. She’s at work right now. There are things that have deadlines still. And she wasn’t able to go to work yesterday between how upset she was and all the phone calls, texts, and emails to everybody – including the legal assistant who read his 3 am email and said “That’s crazy!” Also noting he was trying to hold her stuff hostage and she’d get with other people in the firm and contact her attorney as soon as his plane landed in Denver. So. Hopefully today she gets her stuff. And maybe, if the bloody computerized bankruptcy payment company/program processes her final payment and releases the hold on the mortgage today, she can deal with the mortgage/quitclaim part tomorrow. Hopefully.

    Meanwhile, I’ve had a rotten night – sinusitis – and my hands are cold & stiff. Oh well. Time to be about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  6. Good morning, meeses! Thursday …

    It is 73 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 90. Partly cloudy skies are in the forecast. Yesterday’s cloudiness unleashed a furious 10 minute rainstorm that was not in the forecast – is that even legal?!!? In any event, I got rained on because I had taken a walk over to the grocery store and it started raining while I was there. This morning there are clouds over the mountains.

    My thoughts go out to the people of Chicago who are in the latest city being invaded by the MAGAt gestapo. The Party of State Rights sure has changed their tune over the years. The only State Rights they respect are ones that align with their white nationalist viewpoint. Chicago does not need federal troops to keep the peace and with the number of guns available to just about everyone now, this is not going to end well. Hmmm. Arm the citizenry, make sure guns are prolific, send in federal troops to harass the people, violence ensues. Maybe the MAGAt overlord is creating the crisis to claim a need for martial law? I increasingly worry about the 2026 election and whether the plan is to take control of cities and shut down the election apparatus to ensure a Republican majority in Congress. The refusal to seat duly elected House member Adelita Grijalva should scare the heck out of everyone. The Speaker of the House can literally refuse to swear in anyone he chooses. Goddess help us.

    All the sports teams I was rooting for lost. I turned off the WNBA Finals halfway through because I could see where it was going. Nate TidbitBrain needs to be charged with coaching malpractice for doing the same thing over and over again hoping for a different outcome. Free the Bench! It is stupid to play 8 vs 12 especially when one of the 8 is 38 years old and looks exhausted. Reading about the game, I am glad I did not watch it – I hope Satou Sabaly is okay. :(

    I have a couple of things I want to get done before I have to leave for my early morning appointment. I will be glad when this week is over.

    See all y’all later!

  7. Good Thursday morning, Meese! It’s 53 F. in sunny Ashburn, going up to 67 F. Apparently, it got down to the 40’s in some parts of the region.

    Spring has sprung
    Fall has fell
    Dearly is home
    And all is well

    Dearly told me he hated being in the hospital. I just gave him an unhealthful breakfast to celebrate his homecoming. He can have something nutritious for lunch. There is neither hide nor hair of the nurse who’s supposed to set up his IV.

    In other news, Granddaughter’s horrible boyfriend asked ANOTHER GIRL to Homecoming Weekend! My poor darling. Also, Harris Teeter scheduled her for 20 hours this week but hail, she’s in high school—she can’t work that much. They told her they’d get rid of her if she doesn’t agree to their scheduling. She picked up her paycheck ($150) yesterday, wonder if it’ll be her last. Her little brother won his baseball game yesterday, 15-8. They stopped after 8 innings. Does that make sense to anyone? I know nothing of baseball.

    I’ll be able to meet with my writers this afternoon after all. I hope to go to the gym this morning. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

    • {{{Diana}}} Glad Dearly’s safely home. At his age, give him whatever he wants to eat. Don’t worry about “healthy”. Your poor granddaughter indeed. Guess she needs to look for a better job. In kids’ baseball there’s a “mercy” rule. If here’s no way 1 team can win and it’s obvious the score will be even worse, the umps can call the game. That score doesn’t really look bad enough to invoke the mercy rule but that could be the explanation. Holding you & your family in The Light. Blessed Be. Healing Energy & more {{{HUGS}}}

  8. Good morning, 51 and raining in Bellingham today. Yesterday was a no fun day in the garden when we found part of a large viburnum on the ground. Close inspection showed the trunk was rotten and full of ants, which were apparently feeding on the residue of tiny aphids hiding in the leaves on the tall branches. So my lovely tree full of burgundy leaves and berries is gone and now we need to treat the soil and then find a new plant. I know it’s just a gardening setback but last night was long as garden worries merged with tRump angst. Oh well, time to go to the lab and then I’ll just cope. As always my best wishes to all.

    • {{{princesspat}}} always sad to lose a beautiful tree. All the more so when one depends on the beauty of nature to help deal with the evils of Man. Healing Energy. Moar {{{HUGS}}}

    • I suspect that “Worship Music” will be chosen by the Turning Point rally counter programming for Bad Bunny. People need to remember that the white nationalist movement promoted by MAGAtry in the United States is a christian white nationalist movement. On the one hand we have the supposed christians of Turning Point, fomenting hate in the name of Jesus Christ. On the other hand, we have Pope Leo continuing the work of Pope Francis in his new teaching on how to treat the poor:

      A concrete commitment to the poor must also be accompanied by a change in mentality that can have an impact at the cultural level. In fact, the illusion of happiness derived from a comfortable life pushes many people towards a vision of life centered on the accumulation of wealth and social success at all costs, even at the expense of others and by taking advantage of unjust social ideals and political-economic systems that favor the strongest. Thus, in a world where the poor are increasingly numerous, we paradoxically see the growth of a wealthy elite, living in a bubble of comfort and luxury, almost in another world compared to ordinary people. This means that a culture still persists — sometimes well disguised — that discards others without even realizing it and tolerates with indifference that millions of people die of hunger or survive in conditions unfit for human beings. A few years ago, the photo of a lifeless child lying on a Mediterranean beach caused an uproar; unfortunately, apart from some momentary outcry, similar events are becoming increasingly irrelevant and seen as marginal news items.

      JD Vance and his Turning Point followers, blinded by their hatred of those Not Them will never see themselves in that.

  10. Good morning. Did my walk, even ran a little. For folks who still go to the orange p!ace: I’m hosting the music diary tomorrow evening. My theme is songs with great transitions. I’d hoped it would be seasonal, that we’d be transitioning to fall weather. No such luck. 73 while I was walking, high in the mid 90s. But I did come across a fun post about the ultimate transition-filled song, Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody. Anyway, tomorrow at 6 central time.

  11. Good morning, meeses! Finally Friday …

    It is 72 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 90. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast. It is mostly clear right now and I can see the moonlight but not the moon – I think she must be straight overhead. They are still predicting rain from Tropical Storm Priscilla tomorrow and Sunday. The weather guessers are saying 1-2 inches which can cause quite a bit of flooding in the parched desert.

    Hahahahaha! The Felon will not get the Nobel Peace Prize that he cobbled together a faux peace deal in Israel to try to get. The Nobel committee is not that dupable! The peace prize did go to a woman in a country under attack by tRump, Venezuela. I wonder if that is a subtle dig? From the release:

    Announcement, Nobel Peace Prize 2025 10 October 2025

    The Nobel Peace Prize for 2025 goes to a brave and committed champion of peace – to a woman who keeps the flame of democracy burning amid a growing darkness.

    The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the Nobel Peace Prize for 2025 to Maria Corina Machado.

    She is receiving the Nobel Peace Prize for her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.

    As the leader of the democracy movement in Venezuela, Maria Corina Machado is one of the most extraordinary examples of civilian courage in Latin America in recent times.

    I expect 1000% tariffs will soon be levied on Norway.

    I have a lot to do today to prep for a weekend of projects that have been deferred this week. Sadly, most of my sporting events watching involves games whose outcome will likely make me sad.

    See all y’all later!

  12. It’s 56 heading for 82 and sunny at the moment. Yesterday we generated 8.9 KWHs and the m-t-d at 82.75 is still on track. Barely.

    As the moon wanes she’s higher & higher in the sky when I get up (and of course will reach a point soon where she’ll have already gone down by the time I go to bed) so I only got a bare glimpse of her this morning. But I did get that glimpse and that’s good.

    Well, we’d hoped the crew could get everything yesterday but Natalia’s ex made them start so late it was dark before they could get done. They did manage, by not taking breaks to even eat or drink (this I know by how much food and how many bottles of water she brought back), to get everything out of the house and most of what was in the garage. Her bicycles and containers for her container garden are still there. And the one exception to everything from the house – her brother’s .38 – is still there. She’s going to inform him if the gun isn’t found and returned to him within 2 weeks he’s going to report it stolen. That ought to move him. I recommended that she just hang up if he starts harassing her. Don’t try to reason with him. She’s got to contact the bank this morning to see if everything is in train for the mortgage/quitclaim part. Meanwhile my house is full of boxes plus some furniture that are mostly taking up the living room until she has time to sort things out and move stuff around. The big harp is here. It’s been just over 11 years since I last helped her move that harp. Her brother took the lever harp out to the farm last night on his way home. Step by step.

    It’s now chilly enough in the mornings that my back and hands are stiff and achy. Sigh. But that’s the only thing I don’t like about fall weather. Heck, I’m looking forward to when it’s cool enough in the evenings to have fires. But stiff and achy means slower. I’d best be about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  13. Good Friday morning from Mrs. Frankenstein, Moosekind. That’s what I look like after stupidly walking into the laundry closet door. I’ve put a bunch of makeup on, which doesn’t really help, and I wear smoked glasses when I go out, but still…

    ‘Tis CHILLY. It was in the 40s this morning, it’s 54 F. now, and our high on this lovely day will be 64 F. Going down to the garden in a minute to cut some purple chrysanthemums for the table. They Say it will rain tonight, tomorrow, and be quite terrible on Sunday. Must get something in to cook. Dearly can’t go to one of the restaurants here, tethered to an oxygen tank as he is.

    A medic is here, hooking up poor Dearly to an IV for liquid Lasix. Our living room is full of medical equipment because Dearly sleeps there. Haven’t had time to go out and see Herself, because by 8 p.m. I’m wiped.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond. I’m glad Maria Machado won the “Noble Prize” as Mango calls it, but I wish Jose Andres had won it. He does a tremendous amount of good for humanity.

    • I was a little disappointed that Maria Machado thanked the Trump Administration for their help and support in working to bring “freedom” to Venezuela. I suppose it is a good idea, for personal safety, to inoculate oneself against attacks by fluffing up the MAGAt King but it grossed me out.

      • Eek! According to this article from Common Dreams, Machado is a right-winger who is in cahoots with the tRump regime to stifle democracy not promote it. I can’t believe that the Nobel Committee got it so wrong – I hope the real Machado is not what this article says she is.

  14. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

    It is 72 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 84. Partly cloudy skies and an 86% chance of rain is in the forecast. Right now it is muggiernhell and I suspect that it will stay that way. We had a few drops of rain last night but most of the rain went north of us on its southwest path. I may be doing my walk in the fitness center today.

    I don’t have a lot to say. I do know that I will be ignoring the news especially on Monday, Indigenous Peoples Day, when the MAGAt King “reclaims” Columbus Day for his racist followers. Project 2025 is literally the dissolution of Decent America to be replaced with a white christian nationalist country that I do not recognize and do not fit into. I despise all of those who thought the price of eggs was more important than honoring and respecting people’s humanity.

    I am hoping my MLB team gives me a reason to keep following baseball (other than hate watching) but they are a very young team pushed to the wall in a must win situation and who the heck knows how they will respond? The WNBA Finals are over and now we can keep half an eye on the stalled Collective Bargaining Agreement, where all the newly minted free agents will be going and the run up to the expansion draft for Toronto and Portland. I am trying to decide if I want to purchase season tickets to the Arizona Wildcats womens basketball team in solidarity with the new coach and her plans. I doubt I will go to many games so they don’t have to be fancy seats. I will ponder it.

    See all y’all later!

  15. Good Saturday morning, Meese! ‘Tis a gray and gloomy day here in Ashburn, 49 F. and going up to 67 F. We’re expecting two days of rain. I’ll be sure to let you know if it actually transpires. Whereas everywhere else on the East Coast is probably gonna git it, it’ll bypass us.

    Dearly continues to take a boatload of meds. I had to stop taking Allegra because of the upcoming visit to the allergist, so I’m itching and swelling like mad. I look awful, still like Mrs. Frankenstein, with the big black shiner.

    No plans today except to take a shower, go to the bank, which printed our old address on the new checks despite the fact that we have lived here more than 7 and 1/2 years, and try to find the allergist’s office. I have to be there at 12:30 Tuesday for a 1 p.m. appointment, and if there’s one thing missing from the paperwork I’m supposed to fill out, she won’t see me. I’m already hoping this will be the only visit because I already have a very bad impression of this office.

    Not much other news on the home front. The national front continues to worsen daily. I bought Kamala’s book but have not had the courage to read it. I never did finish Hilary’s book, because years later it still burns.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  16. Good morning. Finally a cool morning (in the 60s) but still 90s for highs. Ant it hasn’t rained in 34 days, in what is supposed to be a wet time of year. So next spring won’t have many bluebonnets. Today’s plan: kickboxing, laundry, groceries. Maybe making next week’s lunch.

    • Is it traditional to stand for the playing of “God Bless America”, a song inserted into MLB events as a jingoistic response to George W. Bush ignoring the Presidential Daily Brief and letting his pals from Saudi Arabia ram jets into the World Trade Center? I have never stood for the playing of that song and always mute it on my TV in solidarity with those whose spirituality does not include the Judeo-Christian god.

  18. It’s 58 heading for 84 and sunny at the moment. Yesterday we generated 7.6 KWHs and the m-t-d at 90 is still – but barely – on track.

    I saw the moon just starting her descent after sunrise when I was putting out birdseed this morning. The waning moon is a good time to wrap up a toxic relationship. Natalia was able to deal with the mortgage/quitclaim stuff yesterday. So the only “hold” he’s got left on her is what little stuff is at that house she no longer owns nor pays the mortgage on and the fact the utilities are still in her name. Well, and he’s still on her healthcare plan. She’s got to get a printed copy of the official divorce decree to give HR to get him off before end of year. But she can just not continue him as of the new year if HR balks for any reason. Step by step. Still boxes covering half the living room and part of her bedroom here. She’s at the farm through Monday dealing with the stuff there. It’s not as slow as it seems. We’re getting there.

    Cloud is stressed enough he started pulling out his fur again. I gave him a dose of gabapentin and so far I think that took care of it. I’m a little stressed myself. I need to renew my driver’s license and the state didn’t send a reminder/form to take with me. I called and the woman who answered at Taxes & Titles said to just go in and show them my current license. But it has to be done next week. A 4-day/holiday week because it lapses on the 20th. sigh. Anyway, I need to be about my boosting day. (Heaven knows what I’ll do about getting the boosting started when I go in to renew the license.) Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}
