Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: October 12th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

    Morning low of 68 degrees in the Desert Southwest 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 79. Mostly cloudy skies and rain is in the forecast.

    Have a great day, all y’alls!!

  2. Sunday Meese. Not so cold here this morning.

    Puerto Rico

  3. Good morning. Had a good day yesterday, exercise and cooking, and people liked the music diary at the orange place. Today: church and more cooking. Sleeping in tomorrow before I go to the dermatologist.

  4. It’s 64 heading for 84 and sunny at the moment. Yesterday we generated 9.16 KWHs and the m-t-d at 99.58 is on track and gained a smidge.

    Wretched night and slept in a bit – not a lot because the cats insist on being fed & Cloud needs his meds – but some. Too many boxes stacked all over the place to vacuum today. Hopefully by next weekend. I’ll take the dustmop around later. Maybe.

    Today’s a very bad anniversary for Indigenous peoples in general. It’s also a very bad personal anniversary for Aji. Her beloved eldest sister was murdered on this date. I don’t remember the year, 30+ years ago I think, but it’s still very painful for her, a very bad day.

    Nothing good going on that I know of politically or environmentally. I’m already doing everything I can for both. Hoping/dreaming of a better world where there’s no need for folks to ask for help for food or shelter. But that world isn’t here. So I’d best get to boosting those asks. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  5. Good morning, 54 and raining in Bellingham today. Ron is staffing the Land Trust booth at the annual Mushroom Show so he is a happy man. I’ll be in my sewing room this afternoon and if I can clear the stacks of mending and ironing I may start a new project. Best wishes to all.

  6. Good Sunday afternoon, Moosekind. Have been too busy all day to check in before now. it’s 63 F. in Ashburn, overcast. and occasionally, extremely windy. We had rain before dawn, but none since. (Cue chorus of, “Why don’tcha pay ME to lie about the weather?”)

    The nurse came this morning. We found out that Dearly is receiving Acute Care, and yes, Kaiser is paying for it. What a relief! One supposes that this is cheaper for them than keeping him in a hospital. Certainly, he’s more cheerful here at home than he would be in the hospital. They stop by every day to check his meds, vital stats, and bla bla bla.

    I am weary to the bone, my big black shiner is turning yellow but hasn’t disappeared. I found a black eye patch with a skull and crossbones on it, will just wear that if I have to leave our apartment. Acute Care will continue until October 25th. We have to visit Dearly’s primary physician tomorrow afternoon. I never have the time or mojo to go to the gym nowadays.

    Another, that was a nice diary you had last night, but I wasn’t sure what you meant by “transitions.”

    Had a nice text chat with Darling Niece in California this afternoon. They’re moving to a new apartment farther down the same street, but this one is bigger, has a large patio, and an extra room that Beloved Nephew can use as an office. I miss her terribly. M’daughter is having a vacation in South Carolina. Why? Well, I suppose it’s warmer than Lenox, MA.

    Okay, that’s enough from me. Wishing you all a good evening.

  7. Good morning. Was watching the local news while I get ready for my appointment, but all of them now have the orange goon addressing the Knesset. Sigh. I have 2 books loaded on my kindle, water bottle is good and chilled and I know from last time that they have snacks at the office because people are there for hours. So that’s my day all sorted.

  8. Monday Meese. Will rain all day here in Kingston

    Puerto Rico

  9. Good morning, meeses! Monday, Indigenous Peoples’ Day …

    It is 68 degrees in Tucson 🌵 and still muggiernhell. It is raining right now and will be for the better part of the morning. Normally I am happy to have rain but we sprung a small leak in the living room ceiling yesterday so we have a bucket and hopes that we can get the maintenance guys here early to find and fix it without making a huge mess. In any event, everyone else, including Mother Earth, can enjoy the downpour – I will enjoy it when it occurs only outside. Roof repairs in Southern Arizona are neglected because it does not rain really hard very often and a failed roof is the only thing that seems to get building owners attention. :(

    Is anyone shocked that the first wave of federal Reduction In Force firings has targeted people who are essential and that they are begging them to come back to work? The Project 2025 people do not think any government workers are necessary which is always going to lead to the worst way ever to test whether a job is essential – fire the person then see who is harmed and then decide if you care. This is when the red states governors will realize what blue states have been telling them for years – 80% of federal government resources are going to red states and government shutdowns and job cuts might please their MAGAt king but will hurt their constituents. Likely they won’t care.

    I have a bunch of little projects to organize this morning and some “sorry I didn’t get to your project” emails to send. I spent most of the weekend nervously watching sporting events and napping. My MLB team, the Brewers, did make it to the National League Championship series but getting them there – with wishes and hopes – was exhausting! :)

    See all y’all later!

  10. It’s 63 heading for 80 and overcast at the moment. Yesterday we generated 8.2 KWHs and the m-t-d at 107.74 lost ground and is no longer on track. Close enough that a sunny day today – which we aren’t going to have – would catch us up. We’ll see how we stand tomorrow.

    Widget says morning showers and I hope to heaven it’s wrong because there’s a rug out on my line “airing out” that’s too big/heavy for me to bring in by myself and Natalia’s still out at the farm.

    I’d hoped to sleep in a bit today but no such luck. I have no idea who they were but 3 pickup trucks pulled into the construction site next door and parked so their lights were shining in my window. I’m assuming they were overseers of some kind needing the light to look at that house next to me – the only one of the 3 that’s an issue because of how it’s sited – rather than a work crew getting an early start because by the time I was up and dressed/came out of my bathroom they were gone again. Bastids. Anyway, off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  11. Mrs. Frankenstein bids you a good Monday morning and a peaceful Indigenous Peoples Day. Why doesn’t someone write a novel about this continent titled, Return to the Natives, and we non-natives will rocket off to a different solar system?

    Bfitz, sorry about the lack of sleep. In my experience, if you don’t get your full quota, whatever that quota might be for you, you keep dozing off all day, have no energy, and overdose on sweets.

    We’re having typically ugly weather here in Ashburger. It’s 58 F. and the imaginary rain has so far remained imaginary. I made granola sundaes for breakfast and it filled us up so much we don’t want anything else. The visiting nurse is here to superintend Dearly’s needs for a while. I have to get ready to go out. Have so many phone calls to make tomorrow that I don’t think I can get to the barbershop to get my hair done as usual on Tuesday morning.

    Have covered the black eye with makeup as much as possible. Will have to wear sunglasses, which are quite unconvincing on an overcast day like this. Gripe, gripe, gripe. What can I say, except that Rethugs are evil and some of the women are just as bad as their male counterparts? Ugh, they should all be ashamed of themselves.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

  12. Good morning, 51, cloudy with a chilly breeze. I’ll need to close my bedroom window soon but for now the fresh air is nice. I need to contact my dr. today so do I wait on the phone for 45 mins, or drive crosstown to his office and try to talk to someone in person? I think I’ll drive and stop at a nursery on the way home. I know I need to make some changes re my garden activities but I would like to replace the verbena that we lost last week. I can’t plant another verbena in that spot so I’m looking for a tall evergreen that will provide shelter for the rhodies growing next to it and will screen the neighbor’s house from our living room window. I’ll need to find a larger plant because I don’t have enough time left to see a smaller one mature. And that reality has me feeling a bit blue. Oh well, life does go one so I’d best keep coping. As always my best wishes to all.

  13. Monday Meese.

    My husband had a mini stroke last night – went to the ER but refused to do an MRI (he’s very claustrophobic)- he seems okay this morning.

    • I hope your husband’s health continues to improve as the day goes on. I don’t blame him on the MRI. I would need a sedative to put my head in a tube. :(

      We will be having No Kings rallies in Tucson and I am going to try to find one. Some people are nervous – ICE raids and brutal border patrol thugs are very much a fact of life here. Every day in the paper there are more stories of fear and heartache with families separated and people who have lived here for 30 years deported to as place they don’t know.

    • {{{Denise}}} Prayers up & lots of Healing Energy to your husband. And you. Moar {{{HUGS}}}

  14. Good morning. Procedure yesterday went well. Only 2 rounds (they take stuff off, check it; take more, check it, etc) and they got it all. I wouldn’t say I got zero sleep last night, but I woke up pretty much every time I moved. Tylenol every 6 hours. Back to work today, so very lucky I have these wfh days. If I had to be in the office, I’d definitely have called in sick today. Anyway, happy Tuesday – and make everyone around you wear sunscreen.

    • {{{anotherdemocrat}}} Glad the procedure went well & glad you have WFH days. Healing Energy. Moar {{{HUGS}}}

  15. Good morning, meeses! Tuesday …

    It is 66 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 79. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast. I was greeted by the last quarter moon when I visited my deck this morning. It feels like forever since I saw her even though it was only a few days. We are spoiled here with 360 days of clear skies. The remnants of Hurricane Priscilla have finally moved through but not before causing some serious flooding. Yesterday, there was torrential rain off and on – we ended up with about 3/4 of an inch but the airport had nearly two inches. The leak in my ceiling was patched and there were no new leaks yesterday but this morning, the water overhead has found the low spot and is pooled over the compromised area; I am not sure how long it will be before it breaks through again. The roofers will be here tomorrow but when they finish they will have to cut a hole in the ceiling to replace the damaged drywall. I appear to have moved from an older home that was going to require a lot of future repairs that I had no money for to a older apartment that is going to continue to require a lot of repairs that I may not have the stress tolerance for. I have to decide if it makes sense to stay here.

    I am ignoring the news although there is one nugget of hope. The popular governor of Maine is going to run against the deplorable enabler Susan Collins in the Senate race. There is no reason for a blue state to have Susan Collins “looking out for them” – furrowed brows do not help people kicked off SNAP and Medicaid and treated like criminals by the gestapo her party has set up. Maybe this will finally be when Mainers get fed up with her and move on. p.s. I do not think the Gaza peace will hold because there will be no change in the people running the Israeli government who approved the genocide in Gaza. The people living there cannot “unsee” what happened and the area they were living in is nearly uninhabitable. Hamas may be gone but there will not be peace when what gave rise to Hamas, the terrible treatment of the Palestinian people, continues.

    Yesterday was a lost day with the roof leak and the typical Monday onslaught of problems. I am trying to get caught up and will cancel some things I had scheduled for later in the week that seem like too much to try to do.

    See all y’all later!

  16. It’s 66 heading for 85 today and trying to be sunny but not making it so far. Yesterday we generated 4.15 KWHs and the m-t-d at 111.89 lost more ground.

    As long as Israel continues to regard Palestinians the way we regarded Indigenous peoples (only good one was a dead one) the Resistance will continue. Whether it’s called Hamas or something else, it will continue. The Palestinians literally have nothing to lose when even their lives are so regarded.

    Natalia got back earlier than expected yesterday evening and we, mostly she, opened, sorted, and dealt with about a dozen boxes. Mostly in the living room but some in her bedroom. Step by step. She did the same at the farm over the long weekend so she’s very tired. But it’s a workday so off she went to work. And I need to get off to mine. (Hope I have time to check in tomorrow before I leave for the DMV office. If not, I’ll check in when I get back.) Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  17. Hello from 41 and sunny Bellingham. Dee, I hope your husband is feeling well today. Diana, hope you and Dearly are ok. Becky, RonK will be having Moh’s surgery later this week so our thoughts are with you. Jan, living in an old house is challenging me too and I’m not sure what to do about it. For now coping is best but the reality of aging in place is becoming more real.

    We found a possible replacement plant yesterday but then got sidetracked with what to do about the area rug in the study. It’s large, old, and collectible but it keeps bunching up around the furniture and I’ve tripped several times so it needs to go and that means moving a lot of stuff. I’ll call in the family helpers to get that done and try to make my peace with the inexpensive rug we bought to replace it. The new rug is smaller, just covering the center of the room so it should lay flat. The floor in that room is an old house problem…..tiles with absetoes so we kept it inert and carpeted with remnants to cover it because we had the big rug to cover all the seams. So if I can keep the seams covered and the new rug lays flat I’ll be ok with a cheap fix.

    I didn’t get to the doc’s office yesterday but did communicate via the portal re med refills so I’ll try to go to the office later this week. I need to find a new dermatologist and just learned my new PCP doc will be on leave for the next 6 months:(
    Oh well, his office has weveral docs so I’ll sort out who is covering for him and then decide what to do next. Modern medicine is complicated and makes me grouchy but whining doesn’t help…..just makes me feel better for the moment. As always, my best wishes to all.

  18. Good morning. Less pain, not none but better. I only woke up 3 or 4 times last night; I know I did take more tylenol at midnight. My state rep just announced she’s running for governor. She is awesome, I’ll hate not having her as my rep but she’d be a great governor. Have a good Wednesday, everyone!

  19. Wednesday Meese. Waiting for Nad’s test results. He seems okay this morning
