Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: December 28th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. it’s 28 heading for 58 and sunny. Last sunny day for the 10-day forecast. Apparently 2026 is coming in cloudy. Figures. Anyway, yesterday we generated 7.44 KWHs and the m-t-d at 184.52 passed the goal and might even get over 190 to wrap up December.

    I’ve had the bedroom curtains open at night for the last several since the moon is angled to cast moonlight into my room and across the foot of my bed between midnight and ~4 AM. Not that I stay up to watch it but I get up at least once in the night (and go to the window to actually see her while I’m up) and surface multiple times (and note it’s there).

    Natalia’s had some family business come up and won’t be home until Saturday evening. Not as if I’m not used to spending New Year’s Eve alone – I have for the last 20-odd years. And really, I don’t celebrate it. I go to bed at my usual time. It’s just the day when I change out the whole calendar rather than just turning the page. The hopes & blessings I send out are no different on New Year’s Eve than any other evening.

    Meanwhile, I’d best be about my boosting. People still need to eat & pay rent. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  2. Good Wednesday morning, Moosekind, and Happy New Year’s Eve, I guess. It’s 28 Ffffrigid degrees Fahrenheit in Ash-berg, with a sky of mixed white and gray. We’re 13 inches under normal precip for the year, ain’t that somep’n?

    Yesterday I succeeded in getting a doctor’s appointment at eight-bloody-thirty in the MORNING, leaving me no time to eat the apple-walnut bran muffins I’d just made. No coffee, either. The doctor hemmed and hawed and finally ordered a ‘flu test to be administered. I don’t have the ‘flu. What I do have is Internal Unrest, mixed with a common cold. That last is my own diagnosis since she disappeared in her magnificent teal-blue, cable-knit sweater and was not seen again.

    Anyway, eating a late breakfast made me sleepy, so I took a nap, and then my day was plumb ruint.

    Still taking cold meds like mad, drinking Pepto-Bismol as if there’s no tomorrow. Just checked all the bank accounts. Apparently we’re not going to get paid early—whatever is usually paid on the first of the month will be paid on the 2nd. Oh, okay.

    Going to mask this morning when I go out to get my hair done, fer sure. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

    • It is good to get tested. They have some new drugs that are good for mitigating flu symptoms if they can catch it early enough. I hope you get some relief!

  3. Good morning, 34 and cloudy outside my windows today. The light is slowly changing but it’s still twilight most of the day. Our niece and her husband will be coming for a brief visit today or tomorrow so I need to refresh the fading flowers, tidy the house and bake something. I know we will enjoy their visit, but I’m been such a grumpy recluse I need to cheer up so I can be good company. Best wishes to all.

  4. Good morning, meeses! Thursday, the first day of 2026 …

    It is 57 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 66. It is raining now and is expected to be cloudy and raining off and on all day. Yesterday there was no sun. The reservoirs are happy – January and February rain and snow in the mountains is how we replenish our water supply for the hot summer months. It is snowing on Mount Lemmon right now!

    The only thing I can say about 2025 is good fking riddance for personal and political reasons. If I could burn here, I feel like a calendar burning ritual would be in order. I will envision the burning instead which will likely be more satisfying because I can embellish it. What else can I throw in the fire? Hmmm….

    I have many new January things to do and will work at my own pace today since clients are not working. I need to gather accounting snapshots of 2025 and prep for their end of year accounting projects. I have one more personal EOY accounting task that I should do today; if I don’t it may never get done and then I will be angry with myself in June when I am looking for transaction information.

    See all y’all later!

  5. New Years Day and we’ll be eating black-eyed peas this afternoon while watching women’s college basketball. Blessings to you all!

    • The Wisconsin Badgers will play Rutgers at noon my time and I will watch. Rutgers is one of the teams I have on my list that we have a good chance of beating. Number 7 Maryland, who put a 38 point shellacking on them was not on my list. :)

  7. It’s 44 heading to 66 today and slightly overcast at the moment. Serious clouds are supposed to move in later in the day. Not a great start for the month or year from a PV perspective. Yesterday 7 KWHs and wrapped up December with 191 so that was good. We wrapped 2025 with 4 MWHs which is very good. We hadn’t reached 4 MWHs since 2020. The best we’ve ever done in January is 234 so that’s our miracle goal. The worst was 149 in 2023 so that’s our “at least better than” goal. My almost default goal for any month I’m not using A/C is 180 because that’s about what I use in a month when I’m not using A/C. So 180 is the target goal.

    I’ve gotten to the point when I think “meet the new year, hope to god it’s not as bad as the old year” since just about every year since 2016 just seems to get worse. One way or another. Meanwhile there’s boosting to be done so I’d best get to it. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  8. Good morning and happy new year to everyone. I went to the gym yesterday and will walk a mile this afternoon. Got some cooking to do, the store gave me cornbread mix with my blackeyed peas, hope that works in an air fryer.

  9. Golly, third time lucky! Logged in three times, now able to reply.

    Good Thursday morning, Meese, and happy 2026! Or something. It’s got to be better than 2025, hazzenit? Anyway, guess what! It SNOWED while we were asleep. Admittedly, it was nothing to brag about, but it must have been more than three flakes because even in the semidarkness I could see that it was piled up in the corners of the screened porch and sticking to whatever patches of bare earth it could find. The sky is an icy blue lit by golden rays of sun and later on, the winds will howl. The snow has melted, of course.

    I’ll be glad when the holidays are over. Yes, they’re fun, but my schedule is all messed up. I have to look at the newspaper so see what day it is. The Home for Oiled People (naw, not oiled, just old) keeps serving dinner at 3 p.m., which further roils one’s internal schedule. I’ve been wolfing down snacks late at night, to the extent that I’ve gained two pounds since Monday!

    Not enough sleep (although thanks for the good wishes, I’m feeling better), so back to bed I go, then to get washed, brushed, and go to the gym. Don’t see how they’re going to do the Rose Bowl Parade today with that nonstop rain in Pasadena.

    The swing band last night WAS VERY LOUD. Corblimey! They went on so long I wanted to yell, “Do you know a song called ‘Enough Already’?” but I didn’t. I wore an attractive black-and-silver mask so I wouldn’t get anyone else’s ‘flu.

    Need to wake up my writers. Their essays are theoretically due today but some of them may be hung over, so tomorrow will be OK. My essay is titled, “Sexytimes at the Home for the Aged,” which should provoke some sort of reaction.

    OK, have rattled on long enough. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

    • Glad you are feeling better! I hope you can get back in sync with the days soon. I have not had any clue since December 21st and count on my phone to tell me the day of the week. Monday will be January 5th and there should be no holidays until MLK Jr Day to throw me off.

      Hoppy Gnu Year to you!! 🐇 🦬 🗓

  11. Good Friday morning, Moosekind! I’m on hold with Social Security. The canned info I received from the robot seemed to say that I don’t need to do anything to get survivors’ benefits—they’ll do it automatically. How delightful that would be if true! However, I want to confirm this with an actual human being.

    It’s cloudy in Ashburn, currently 25 F., going up to 40 F. and supposedly clearing later. I hope so, because it may be my only chance to see the Wolf Moon. They’re predicting a cloudy day tomorrow.

    Have written a letter to the United Airlines Bennies office. Perhaps it will get some results.

    OK, I’ve inflicted my personal problems on y’all long enough. Mamdani looks like being a take-charge mayor! Meanwhile, I can’t believe the havoc Mango is inflicting on this country. What next? War with Venezuela and Iran? One’s head aches with the constant worry of it all.

    I have a UU dinner tonight if I ever get off the phone with SSA. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

    • I was reading a depressing article about how the MAGAt government has cut Social Security Administration support staff to the bone. I am not sure what they hope for – that all of the olds just say “oh well, it is too difficult to collect the money that I deserve after a lifetime of work, I will just get along without it”? JHC! If the olds (excluding present company) would get their heads out of the sand and realize that they should never EVER vote for Republicans again, we could put an end to this idiocy.

  12. Good morning. After all these restful days, a 5-day work week next week is gonna hurt. So I’ll just really enjoy today. Got some errands, and I want to go to the gym. I made cornbread muffins yesterday, ate my blackeyed peas and kale (hey, it’s related to cabbage), all the NYD things. It is crazy warm here — high in the upper 80s.

  13. It’s 48 heading for 63 and overcast. Supposedly it’s raining. I’ll grant you the air is very wet but there’s nothing falling out of the sky. Yesterday the clouds didn’t move in until almost dark – I even saw the moon coming up before she was hidden – and we generated 7.1 KWHs. So the m-t-d is on track. Until the end of today. Still, it’s a good omen.

    Since I do the same things pretty much daily, it’s hard enough for me to remember what day it is. The holidays really throw me off. But they’re pretty much done for a bit. If today isn’t a “normal” Friday, tomorrow will pretty much be a “normal” Saturday and start of the weekend. Meanwhile, there’s boosting to be done so I’d best get to it. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  14. Good morning, meeses! Friday, I think …

    It is 52 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 64. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast. This morning I saw the nearly full moon high in the western sky and she kept me company in my office for several hours until she was enveloped in clouds then dipped below the buildings.

    Skipping the news. I will read one or two “optimism only” stories later this afternoon.

    My Wisconsin Badgers basketball team fell into a terrible 21 point hole playing Rutgers on the road but found a way to pull ahead and win in the waning minutes. I think the difference between what they were able to do and what my other team, the Arizona Wildcats, could not do, is that they have 3 or 4 players who can erupt for threes – Arizona has only one. When you are down by a lot, stifling defense and launching threes is how you get back into the game. In any event, it was fun to watch!

    I have some morning errands to run and then I need to organize for a weekend of work.

    See all y’all later!

  15. Good morning, 39 and cloudy outside my windows today. I enjoyed visiting with our niece and her husband yesterday but I was so tired after they left I slept for several hours, woke up for dinner and then slept some more. I see Keith (PT) this afternoon so I’ll prolly need another nap after that. Best wishes to all.

    • Goddess help us all. I guess this is how a malignant narcissist deflects the attention being paid to his failing mental and physical health – and the scandals piling up around him.

      Senate Republicans own this catastrophe – they knew that Hegseth would invade even Canada if trump asked him to.

  17. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

    It is 52 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 68. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast. Last night the 98% full moon rose over the mountains to the ENE and shared space with the alpenglow. This morning she is high in the western sky casting her full moon light on the wash and green space and bathing my office with moonlight. Blessed be.

    I have a stack of things that accumulated on my desk yesterday that I need to address in the quiet of the morning.

    See all y’all later!

  18. It’s 41 heading for 47 and overcast although the widget says the clouds will move off this afternoon. I hope early afternoon. Yesterday we generated 5.9 KWHs but the m-t-d at 13 is still on track. Barely.

    Almost back to “routine” – nothing is normal any longer – and Saturday that really is Saturday. I saw the almost full moon coming up yesterday evening and the completely full moon casting a window-wide streak of moonlight across my bed around 4 am. I know Jan’s up by then but I just stood for a few moments in the blessed light then went back to bed. And overslept. LOL. I’ll do my usual Saturday morning cleaning when I take a midday break from my boosting. Which I’d best get to. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}
