Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: October 19th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

    Morning low of 61 degrees in the Desert Southwest 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 84. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

    Have a great day, all y’alls!!

    • I can really see the light changing. Usually at 6:30am, I am anxious to get outside for my walk before it gets too hot – right now it is still pre-dawn and I have to wait for better light so that I don’t trip over rattlesnakes. Actually, the rattlesnakes are pretty much done, holed up – literally! – waiting until spring.

  2. Good morning. It was fun watching the rallies yesterday, and the reactions this morning. A front is blowing through, and it is supposed to be cool enough tomorrow for long sleeves!For now, I’m actually enjoying the morning news, letting my tea steep till it’s cool enough to pour up – I got a gallon jar that will seal tight instead of the pitcher, and just having a nice morning.

    • I was glad to see that the rallies were all over the news and that the MAGAt gestapo did not use them to go all Kent State on the protesters. In Tucson this weekend they are having a huge food festival and yesterday there were abundant No Kings signs on the participants. The mayor had attended an official No Kings rally at 8am and there were others scattered around the Old Pueblo.

  3. It’s 48 heading for 65 and sunny. Yesterday most certainly was not. We did at least get 1.5″ rain from all those clouds but only generate 2.38 KWHs – the m-t-d at 145.28 most certainly lost more ground.

    Didn’t vacuum today, still too many boxes in the way, but I did sweep and dustmop as best I could around them. Got molasses-spice-walnut bread in the oven and the house smells most sentimental.

    Got a birthday card from aashir’s nani & an ecard from mufftootough. I’m expecting my son this afternoon to prepare a birthday steak dinner for me. Unless something happens at work and he has to go in, of course. Natalia will be home this evening and will do more box unloading if she has the energy. Depending on how many leftovers there are, if any, from the meal Lang prepares, she’s taking about getting takeout to celebrate my actual birthday tomorrow. We shall see. 74 isn’t usually considered a marker or milestone but it is sort of. The last birthday I had with Momma I turned 37 and that was 37 years ago.

    I’d best be about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  4. Good Sunday morning, Moosekind! It’s 67 F. in Ashburn right now, another lovely mid-October day, rising to 76 F. Someone said something about rain tonight, what rubbish. Or perhaps it will actually materialize, as the temperature will drop sharply tomorrow.

    Yesterday was blissfully blue-and-gold and even HOT for “No Kings” day! An estimated 5,000 people packed the Loudoun County Courthouse grounds. We enjoyed standing in the shade of the huge trees. Music was played and speeches were made. No fewer than five different people asked to take a photo of me wearing my “Raging Granny” t-shirt. One young lady said she wanted to put it on Facebook, another young woman said her own granny would love the shirt.

    The carpool drove home, feeling happy. I enjoyed seeing the coverage on TV later.

    Joined another carpool at a quarter to 7, and off we went to see “Our Town,” in which Kate, our drama coach, appeared. Nine of her groupies all sat in a row to see the show. I was impressed by the professionalism of the actors (man, there were a LOT of line), but cheel-drun, I have a 21st-century mind. A play that’s three acts is just too much for me. Ninety minutes is about my limit. In the second act, all I could think of was how much I wanted to go to the bathroom, so during the 10-minute intermission several of us bolted out the door.

    Came home to find that Dearly had not, after all, nuked the frozen dinner I told him to nuke. He just didn’t feel up to it. He did at least drink some Ensure. I did something I do only once a year, made hot chocolate for the two of us. He ate breakfast, though.

    Anyway, today I have to scout the location of the doctor’s office and go to the grocery store to buy a little dead chicken for dinner. Perhaps on Tuesday I’ll make a pie, he likes that.

    That’s enough from me, Moosekind! Feeling very pleased that 7 million turned out, some of them in quite surprising places, and hoping some good will come of it all.

    wishing a good day to all at the Pond and to the “No Kings-ers” beyond.

  5. Good morning, 52, cloudy and breezy outside my windows today. Our son helped us with driving and parking so we were able to go to the NK protest yesterday. It was nice to be with friends and family and a park full of people sharing similar values. I needed a nap after, then I worked on sorting more books. It’s nice to have a sense of order in that room again. I like to organize books by topic so I can find them again. I’ve also been finding family photos and getting them all together where I can sort them later. So I’ll do more today and if energy allows I would like to bake something chocolate. Best wishes to all.

  6. Monday Meese. 60 with rain here in Kingston. Today is my “instacart” shopping day. Wonder how much food prices have gone up. Will find out in a few hours.

  7. Good morning. I get my stitches out today! That’s my excitement. Oh, and that means I’m only working a half day.

  8. Good morning, meeses! Monday …

    It is 61 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 84. Sunny skies are in the forecast. It will heat up a couple of days (may reach 90) and then will settle back into perfect Desert Southwest Fall weather.

    I was glad to see the No Kings rallies show that the Republicans do not have the Consent of the Governed. You wonder if at some point the tRump administration regime speaking only to their basket of MAGAts and ignoring the new tRump voters who only wanted cheaper eggs, will backfire. Do you think a little old lady in Indiana would be thrilled to see a video image of tRump wearing a king’s crown dumping feces on people from an airplane? MAGAts will be, of course, but is there a step too far for his new voters? I hope so.

    It is the start of another week and one filled with projects that have been stacking up as I try to cut back on the time I spend working. I may need a burst of energy to get the old stacks cleared so that I can start with a clean slate and control things better. I shall start with a list.

    See all y’all later!

  9. It’s 53 heading for 77 and sunny at the moment. Hope it stays that way. Yesterday we generated 7.7 KWHs and the m-t-d at 152.97 lost a bit more ground. We’re still on track for over 200 though, maybe even 240. We shall see what we shall see.

    Today is my 74th birthday. It would have been Bobby’s 62nd. I’m not sure which one it is for Aji but I’m pretty sure she’s in her 60s now. I did get my steak dinner and nice visit with my older son yesterday evening. And a call from my younger son yesterday afternoon. I’ve already received card and gift from Diana this morning. 💖 Natalia is preparing dinner tonight “with a real dessert” so birthday happenings are still happening. Which is very nice.

    Need to be about my boosting day. The Rs are causing more people to be in need of crowdfunding while at the same time reducing the number of people who could help (and would – they’re seriously increasing the wealth of those who already can help but won’t). If the Carroll County Hospital has to close, as is starting to seem likely, Natalia’s med-tech sister, along with a lot of Carroll County residents, will lose her job. All we can do is try. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  10. Good morning, Moosekind, and happy Diwali! It’s 61 F., on its way up to 65 F., and sunny, with wind. I hate it.

    Last night we experienced an electricity outage from 10 p.m. until 2 a.m. As we are not encouraged to burn candles in this place, we naturally have hardly any. What a bummer! Today I’ll order some nonelectric light sources from Amazon.

    A hard rain began at 10 p.m. also. I didn’t believe in it until it happened. The snow forecast for our region is below normal. Well, it always is, so what else is new?

    My 11 o’clock interview stood me up, so I’m going to get a haircut. Wishing our darling bfitz a happy birthday and everyone else at the Pond a good day!

  11. Good morning, 51 and mostly cloudy. Ron will have the bulky pressure bandage changed today so I hope his glasses will fit again, because wonky vision is making him dizzy. He sees the plastic surgeon later this week. I’m making progress with the library….one more stack of books to find shelf space for, a basket of framed photos to place among the books, then I’ll sort my desk. Now that the room is easier to work in I’ll take a break and then start cleaning the file cabinets. Best wishes to all.

  12. Happy Tuesday Meese.

  13. Good morning. Getting the stitches out went smoothly yesterday, and I slept better last night. Now if Austin could just get some rain – over 40 days w3ithout, and it’s so dry they’ve pre-declared a fire disaster.

    • {{{anotherdemocrat}}} Yay! for stiches out. And definitely Yay! for sleeping better. Healing Energy. Moar {{{HUGS}}}

  14. Good morning, meeses! Tuesday …

    It is 63 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 90. Sunny skies are in the forecast. The moon will be new today at 5:25am MST and we will begin a new waxing cycle. I need one, bring the energy!

    It is disheartening to see the Felon being allowed to physically wreck the White House to add to his destruction of the institutions of government. The Republican Party owns this, they own all the damage that it being done as a result of their embracing an authoritarian and giving him the tools he needs to solidify his regime. Now Republican hatred of people who are Not Them is leading to people who will have no food assistance soon to add to those whose grocery bills are skyrocketing because of their leader’s vanity tariffs. Goddess help us all.

    I was not impacted by Jeff Bezos’ Amazon Cloud tech meltdown yesterday (except that the NY Times Connections puzzle was unavailable for a while). The sooner the technology companies put artificial intelligence in its place and run things with REAL intelligence the better. You can’t fire everyone who knows how to do things and try to run a complicated infrastructure using AI bots.

    Microsoft rolled out a new feature update for Windows 11 that they are actively pushing. I am trying to stay ahead of it so I can help my clients with any issues. So far I am not seeing anything that is going to be a problem but one of my computers is not finding the update so I need to figure out why. It is my newest computer so there should be nothing stopping it from being able to take the update. In any event, I best get back to it.

    See all y’all later!

  15. It’s 46 heading for 69 and sunny at the moment. Yesterday we generated 7.7 KWHs again and the m-t-d at 160.6 is, barely, on track for 240. We shall see what we shall see.

    I had a lovely continuation of my birthday celebration. Got another ecard from a friend, an actual card from one sister, telephone calls from a cousin and another sister, DMs with good wishes and apologies that my presents were going to be a day late this year. And dinner was an elegant low-calorie high-protein spinach salad (topped with, among other things, pork and parmesan cheese) followed by an even more elegant but definitely not low-calorie apple crumble – lots of cinnamon on the apples, lots of walnuts in the crumble topping – topped with vanilla ice cream. Yum.

    If I remember correctly Diana & Dearly’s anniversary is today. I devoutly hope it is a good one. Meanwhile, I’d best be about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  16. Wednesday Meese. Rain and chilly here in Kingston today. Will spend the day writing.

    (FYI: Kamala is an AKA)

    • I am still not sure about whether or not Kamala should run in 2028. I will never NOT FEEL that she was cheated out of a chance at the presidency by Joe Biden’s “I alone can fix it” mentality. Someone who actually cared about the future of America would have declined to run in 2024 and would have passed the baton to the younger generation. I am not sure that second tries work very well, at least for Democrats. I guess we have a long way to go before the 2028 primaries – we first have to survive the Republican’s planned ratfking of the 2026 election. They still have not sworn Adelita Grijalva into the House showing that they will control not only the election but if those elected are ever sworn in. Scary stuff.

  17. Good morning, meeses! Wednesday …

    It is 66 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected high of 86. It is cloudy over the mountains and there is a 16% chance for rain. I will selfishly hope it does not rain as the roofers will not be here until the weekend and I don’t want to have to deal with the leaks.

    I laughed out loud at the headline in my news aggregator “Why So Many Racist Group Chats?”. JHC on a popsicle stick! Because the Republican Party and especially the new GenZ male MAGAt voters are racist! The MAGAts ginned up the woe-is-me-wimmins-are-taking-my-jobs butthurt of the GenZ males and turned it into a voting bloc that votes for christian white male nationalism. It is exactly who they are and it is both disgusting and depressing. I used to think that the young people would save us but at least half of the young people are now the problem.

    I started my day dealing with a Microsoft issue that required rebooting all my computers for an out-of-band patch and now I am behind. I better get back to my to-do list.

    See all y’all later!

  18. It’s 40 heading for 76 and sunny at the moment. Yesterday we generated 7.3 KWHs and the m-t-d at 168 is barely on track for 240.

    Since Aji hadn’t posted Red Willow Spirit by the time I got offline I forgot it was Tuesday. Need to get over to DK & read then boost Black Kos as soon as I can. 1st I need to set up my boosting stuff so I’d best get to it.
