Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: December 7th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

    Morning low of 45 degrees in the Desert Southwest 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 66. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

    Have a great day, all y’alls!!

  2. Good morning. Yesterday was gorgeous — sunny and warm. Same for today, then a cold front, I’m putting out a hat & gloves for my morning walk. The roller coaster of Texas winter. Anyway, hi.

  3. It’s 45 and apparently going to stay 45 until after sundown. Very gray day. Yesterday after the fog cleared we generated 7.16 KWHs and the m-t-d at 36.95 is actually on track. Which it won’t be by end of day if the forecast is correct. But it is right now.

    December 7th. As a Boomer that’s always a significant date to me. For all that I know most of the mythology about WWII – our part and the “Enemies'” part – is just that. Mythology. We were not so good and they were not as bad as mythology has it. But it was the last war we didn’t actively start. We didn’t attack them, they attacked us. I can’t feel good about any war but I can feel less bad about that one. And honor what my parents thought they were doing and fighting for.

    Meanwhile there are folks to boost and I’d best be about boosting them. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  6. Good afternoon, 49 and light rain outside my windows today. I’ve rested the morning away so now it’s time to get more Christmas sorted. I want to do something with greens and berries but I think I’d best finish the tree….something will happen! Best wishes to all.

    • The ornaments for the tree are still in the box and perhaps we will be just strings of lights this year as no one seems to miss them. We also have lights on the deck so it feels like we are surrounded by lights.

      I realized over the weekend that I had not thought about holiday cards yet and I am hoping I have enough left over from years past to cover the people I still send paper to because there will not be time to get the kind of cards I send.

  7. Good Sunday afternoon, Moosekind! It’s twilight now, the hour of magick. The sky is clear and it’s 39 F. I may get a chance to see Herself tonight.

    What a busy day it’s been! Toasted my wholegrain waffles, ate them with vegan marge and blackberries, then settled down to watch the Formula 1 race. It was almost like old times with Dearly! Most satisfactory result for the race—Lando Norris won the championship for this season. Then I found that Dearly’s favorite English football team, Fulham, was playing, so I turned that on. I had to go to the gym because I won’t be able to leave this flat all day tomorrow until that wretched oxygen equipment is picked up.

    Elder Son Eric came over this afternoon and helped me get gasoline for the car. Then we couldn’t resist going to Trader Joe’s. I sold Dearly’s iPad to him, we had a cuppa, and then he went to pick up little Ethan from basketball practice.

    My new MacBook Air arrived yesterday. Say what you like about Apple, their products are beautiful. This slender machine looks like a polished jewel. Can’t wait for my 16-year-old “consultant” to come over and set it up for me!

    No one has asked me to dinner, which is OK, because I’m tired. Will have some “baby pizzas” from Trader Joe’s, soak my feet, and don my gay apparel to go to the cabaret concert in Blue Ridge Clubhouse. I’m going at 7 to help set up chairs and tables. So you can see I’m keeping busy all day.

    Sometimes I have a fit of the weepies, but mostly I’m managing. Had some GOOD news today! M’Daughter and SIL will drive down from the Icebox state to have Christmas here. Trevor has asked us to Christmas dinner at his house, which will be great. My DIL and young Karl are hoping to go to Tokyo over Christmas, but we’ll have a decent crowd.

    Hope everyone at the Pond has had a good day.

    • I am glad to hear that you will be surrounded by family for the holidays! They say the first set of holidays after the passing of a loved one are the most difficult because the pain is still so intense and the memories so vivid. But there will always be memories of holidays past that will tug at you for as long as you live.

    • {{{Diana}}} Each “first time w/o. . .” is painful but as I’ve often said while you never “get over” the loss of someone, you get used to being without them over time. I’m glad you have family and community to support you while you do so. Healing Energy. Moar {{{HUGS}}}

  10. I know where a lot of y’all are, 38 isn’t “oh wow” cold, but it is here. I walked inside the garage, because the roof was just unthinkable. But I did it. So, hi. Happy Monday.

  11. Good morning, meeses! Monday …

    It is 48 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 70. Sunny skies are in the forecast. The weather widget says that we will see 75 degrees by the weekend. That is certainly more typical. The cool mornings are nice but I very much enjoy baking in the afternoon sun and look forward to being able to take longer walks.

    I will be ignoring the news. In some ways I wish the Democratic Party had been as ruthless as the Republicans have been. The Republicans put all of their effort since 1960 into creating a working majority for long enough periods of time to completely make over the foundations of government, really whether there is a need for the government at all, by cobbling together a coalition of haters: racists and christian white nationalists and nazis and the permanently butthurt. They now have the Supreme Court poised to rule that the president is the government, fk Article I, with a single carve out for the Federal Reserve because even SCOTUS knows that if the Federal Reserve is subsumed to the will of a tyrant, the economy is toast and they could lose money. I am not sure I see a clear way back. By the way, I would never want Democrats to be as ruthless as the Republicans because caring about people, putting their welfare over the obscene accumulation of wealth that seems to drive the Republicans, is what sets us apart. I do sometimes wish Democrats had a little more imagination so we wouldn’t hear “who could imagine that letting Mitch McConnell ratfk the court system would lead to a Supreme Court that would have a supermajority to dismantle the Constitution line by line?” The belief in the sturdiness of the institutions and the refusal to believe that there were a lot of people who hated that the American dream was available to non-white non-christian people is what got us here. Maybe we needed more cynicism? It is like the states who never took the horrible abortion laws off the books because the Supreme Court had declared abortion legal – where were the legislators working to set up guardrails to protect the dismantling the rest of our rights? :(

    I finally had a chance to download and install my tax software over the weekend. I am sure you will be surprised to hear that the defunding of the IRS and the firing of the people who know how to get things done has made it unlikely that the forms people need to file 2025 taxes will be ready before February. How are people supposed to make year-end decisions when they have no idea how their purchases or donations or IRA contributions will impact their taxes?

    See all y’all later!

  12. It’s 30 heading to 46 & overcast. At least it’s supposed to clear off later today. Yesterday it didn’t. We generated less than a KWH and the m-t-d at 37.79 is definitely not on track.

    I just heard a very sad and disturbing piece of news. Natalia called me from work to tell. A young woman who was one of our grad students/assistants about 15 years ago was murdered. “Gunned down” is how Natalia put it. Ashley was a very strong advocate for victims of assault and domestic violence. Which unfortunately makes one a target for those who wish to commit assault and domestic violence. Don’t know anything more than the fact of it but that’s enough to get the day off to a bad start.

    I’d best be about my boosting day. I had a bad night and am running late already. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  13. Good Monday morning, Moosekind! It’s 30 F. and cloudy in Ashburn. Bone-dry, as usual. I did not get to see Herself last night when I came away from the concert. I suppose the night sky was cloudy.

    This morning I cleared out all the spices I moved in with 7 and 1/2 years ago. After I clean the shelves, kitchen towels and wraps will go down there. The next time Trevor walks into my kitchen he’s going to see clean counters (well, except for the coffee makers, the toaster, and the wine bottle opener.) Have important letters to write and mail tomorrow. BFF is picking me up to take me to the post office but we won’t have time to go to Wegbucks, blast it. May have to go Thursday morning.

    It’s 10 am already and I MUST put clothes on. What do I do with the expired apple cider vinegar and things like that? It doesn’t seem very nice to pour them down the sink into the water supply.

    The oxygen people are picking up before 1:30 tomorrow! Yay! I can go to the last Board meeting of the year today! And the gym! Lovely!

    I still talk to the air in the living room, asking it if it wants a cup of early in the morning and whether it had a good night. I’ve been sleeping alone in the bedroom for the last three years. However, Grandson in Ohio sent me a pair of woolly socks to wear at night, and a fluffy toy penguin to put in the bed, so I’ll be fine. Still have occasional weepies when I think of Dearly, but otherwise I’m OK.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

  14. Good morning, 51 and foggy outside my windows today. It’s good we are planning a more simple Christmas this year because I’m weary…..one task at a time, then a rest. I want to sort and edit the tree ornaments so I’ll do that today. Best wishes to all.

  15. Good morning. Really cold, glad I’m saving exercise for this afternoon. I woke up at least 5 times last night, just ugh. Super grateful for a day of wfh.

  16. It’s 38 heading for 57 and sunny at the moment. Yesterday we generated 6.59 KWHs and the m-t-d at 44.37 gained a smidge.

    It’s a groggy, brain foggy day. Don’t know why. I got almost 7 hours of sleep last night. Oh well. Saw the moon as I was putting out the mail. (My stamps came yesterday so my cards are going out today.) She was beautiful, as always. Anyway, I’d best be about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  17. Good Tuesday morning, Moosekind. It’s 22 F. in Ashburger, with cloudy skies. Last night I decided to let the Christmas lights on my big Costco wreath blink happily all night long, so when I woke up this morning I’d see them as I walked down the hall to the living room. Dearly used to leave them on all night. He was up half the night anyway, making a cup of tea and having a biscuit, and sometimes even watching a movie before finally dropping off.

    Despite going to bed 90 minutes later than usual, I’ve been waking inordinately early. So after morning tea and looking at the newspooper, I started unloading and loading the dishwasher and making breakfast. I’m dressed, have only to finish my ablutions. Today I’ll wipe down the revolving cabinets in the corner, putting spices and stuff on the bottom and dishtowels on the top. That’ll tidy the kitchen.

    The oxygen people are supposed to pick up before 1:30. Read my What’sApp message from the British nephew, who is handsomely offering to pick us up from Heathrow.

    Then, tons of letters to write! This afternoon I want to go to the Christmas carol singalong with the Americana group at 2, and have a 3:30 planning meeting with the UU friend who loves to celebrate solstice rituals. I’ve booked the space for December 21 and if the weather permits, we’ll gather around the fire pit for the ritual, then go indoors for light refreshments. Also have a couple of friends to call re plans for Christmas Eve.

    So that’s my day, planned. I DO HOPE they show up! I’ve taped a notice to the door under the Christmas wreath to walk right in if I don’t respond immediately to their knock.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond this bleak winter day.

  18. Tuesday Meese. When I got up it was two degrees. It’s now 14. Just finished watching Jasmine Crockett’s announcement speech. Powerful

    • I wish her luck. She will certainly go right at the Texas Republicans which needs to be done. Maybe the delayed demographic wave turning Texas Blue (we keep waiting) will begin with a wholesale repudiation of Republicans by the decent people who realized they were duped by the Felon and his Tech Bros. We can hope!
