Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: December 28th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

    Morning low of 45 degrees in the Desert Southwest 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 64. Mostly cloudy skies in the morning with the sun making an appearance in the afternoon.

    Have a great day, all y’alls!!

  2. Good morning. Got a lot done yesterday, today is church with an extra hour of Christmas carol singing and I swear I’m going to the gym this afternoon. We’re still having crazy warm weather (80s for highs) but there’s a cold front coming. They were saying a freeze on Tuesday but they’re backing off that now. I hope everyone has a good day today.

  3. Good Sunday morning, Moosekind, and a cold grey Sunday it is, too. The high will be 48 F., perhaps we’ll get some rain this evening and perhaps we won’t. It looks as if it wants to rain right now.

    Yesterday I had to go across the hall to my neighbor’s place to practice singing “Together Wherever We Go” by Dean Martin, Bing Crosby, and Frank Sinatra. It’s one of the most blah, ungrammatical ditties I’v4e ever come across. I hope Tall Dave, the guitarist who’s going to accompany us, forbids us to sing this and opts for the Kingston Trio’s “MTA,” which is at least amusing. But there—don’t want to bore you with my first-world problems. Anyway, after that the day got away from me entirely.

    Have had the waffles and blackberries, now drinking covfefe. To get away from the inane chatter of “Good morning, Merry Car” I turned the TV onto WETA. In a remarkably short time white-haired Mary Berry created a luscious-looking steak pie with a golden crust that spelled out “Happy Christmas”; made Christmas stollen with marzipan; and then mulled a whole pot of wine. When she began work on the Buche de Noel I had to leave, because I knew if I stayed any longer I’d be hypnotized.

    Have big plans for today: folding laundry, entertaining one of my writers to tea on this cold grey winter afternoon, typing up some of the diabetes article notes, writing the two-minute bedtime story; and completing the writing assignment that’s due January 1. It’d be nice to get to the gym, too.

    Still feel as if I haven’t quite woken up. More coffee? Nah, time to get washed and brushed.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  4. It’s 68 heading for 74 and sunny at the moment. Yesterday we generate 6.76 KWHs and the m-t-d at 164.14 is on track with a bit to spare. The forecast for rain went away but the forecast for clouds to go with the temperature drop hasn’t so we shall see whether or not it stays on track.

    Clouds and drop both are supposed to start around noon. So I’ll make the molasses spice bread I meant to bake this morning this afternoon instead. I can have my 1st slice of it for dessert instead of midmorning coffee break. Natalia won’t be back until tomorrow at the earliest because her cat (who lives at the farm because he can’t stand other cats) has a vet appointment in the morning.

    I slept in for some reason and so I’m running a bit behind. It would be a lot behind but I’m putting off cleaning as well as baking until this afternoon. Meanwhile I’d best be about my boosting. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  5. Got up this morning early – it was 9 degrees. Ugh.My women’s college basketball team is playing at noon today – yay!

  6. Good morning, 33 and cloudy in Bellingham today. My slow recovery from too much Christmas fun continues but Ron has been putting the party dishes and glasses away so the house is looking ok. I should be able to do more today. Best wishes to all.

  7. Good morning. Huge difference from yesterday, 43 and really windy. Made for an invigorating walk. Happy Monday.

  8. It’s 18, windchill 0, sunny, and might get up to 35 today. Yesterday we generated 5.23 KWHs and the m-t-d at 169.31 is still on track with 3 production days left in December.

    Yesterday morning it was in the 70s and my neighbor was out power washing his vehicles. Did my car too, bless him. By noon the wind changed and you could feel the cold coming. By 2 it was in the low 50s and by dark it was in the upper 30s. The wind was something fierce. When I was a kid in Houston we called that a “blue norther”. Back then up here it got cold before Thanksgiving and stayed cold until at least Easter. Times change. The climate’s changing/collapsing.

    I baked my molasses spice muffin bread yesterday and will bake a pork roast today. Maybe some potatoes as well. Cooked potatoes, like cooked protein, are great “planned overs” to create quick meals later in the week. Meanwhile, my hands are cold but I’ve boosting to do so I’d best get to it. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  9. Good Monday morning, Moosekind! It’s 51 F. and damp in Ashburn. We must have had a few sprinkles because the edges of the screened porch are wet. Tonight the howling wind will drop the temps down to the 20s. There will be wind tomorrow as well. Blast!

    Anyway, had such a splendid night’s sleep I could not quite believe it. My vision is less blurry this morning and I don’t ache anywhere. That’s good, because I couldn’t get a doctor appointment today. Perhaps tomorrow.

    Have lots of work left over from yesterday. What is it with this nonstop sleeping? That’s all I did on Sunday! Did open one eye long enough to see that the 49ers won their game, goody.

    The pink tea I prepared for my poet friend went very well yesterday. We hope to do it again soon.

    Time to get washed and brushed. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  10. Good morning, 35 and partly cloudy in Bellingham today. I have a hair appt today and hope to walk to the Bookstore after. It’s just 2 blocks so I hope my old legs are finally ready for some activity. Best wishes to all.

  11. Good evening, meeses! Monday…

    It was in the 50s all morning and got to 66 in the afternoon. Overcast most of the day.

    I spent the day getting ramped up for year end closing which I will finish tomorrow. Today was running to the post office and bank and trying to fix a couple of things for a client. I was going to watch one of my women’s basketball teams but was late to it and they were already 40 points down when I checked the score. The other team plays on Wednesday night on the road and I don’t expect much better. Oh well!

    See all y’all tomorrow.

  12. Tuesday Meese.
    Up early doing my writing. It’s 24 here in Kingston. Will head to the store when the sun comes up to buy my black-eyed peas.

    Hurricane Melissa: Our Side Of The Storm | Documentary

    Hurricane Melissa: Our Side of the Storm, is the debut documentary by Tajé Bowen. It examines the intersection of disaster narratives, foreign intervention, and neocolonial power in the Caribbean. The film situates Hurricane Melissa within a broader history of imperial gaze, disaster capitalism, and local resilience. Through a qualitative and critical lens, the film challenges sensationalised coverage and interrogates how power, imperialism, and disaster capitalism shape narratives of aid and recovery.

  13. Good morning. I am glad I don’t have to leave the house this morning, it’s cold again. Yes, I get tired of running the a/c all year but I don’t understand how y’all who live where it’s cold for weeks at a time do it. We had sleet yesterday (okay, barely measurable but still) and that is crazy. Getting ready for wfh, hope people pick up their phones.

  14. It’s 17 but no windchill today so it feels “warmer” outside than it did yesterday. Sunny again today. So far anyway. Yesterday we generated 7.78 KWHs, 2nd highest single day for December, and the m-t-d at 177 is better than on track. We’re only 3 from the 180 goal with today and tomorrow to go.

    My house is one of 6 on the block that decorated for the holidays and one of 4 that still have decorations up. We’ll see if anybody besides me waits until Epiphany/3 Kings Day to take them down. LOL. Meanwhile, I’d best be about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  15. Good morning, 36 and foggy outside my windows today. I was able to walk to the bookstore yesterday, but fortunately Ron met me there because my old knees were done. He fetched the car and I drove home, then a long nap happened. Oh well, a one way walk is better than no walk. Best wishes to all.

  16. Good evening, Meeses! Tuesday …

    Another day crammed full of too many projects to close the year. I think I have everything done but I have been making little notes and I will need to review them in the morning.

    See all y’all tomorrow!

  18. Good morning, meeses! Wednesday, the last day of Pope Gregory XIII’s Calendar Year 2025 …

    It is 55 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 70. Overcast skies are in the forecast. Last night we were able to see the 85% illumination moon high in the eastern sky.

    Good news out of Iowa as a state senate race was won by the Democrat, not allowing the Iowa Republicans to have a supermajority in that body. Even better, the elected senator Renee Hardman became the first Black woman elected to the state Senate in the lily white state of Iowa. Strong finish to a good year for Iowa Democrats. Onward to 2026!!

    HHS and its ghouls are telling people not to get flu shots but to implement the MAHA diet and lifestyle to ward away the virus. The RatFKJr Pandemic is going to sicken and kill more Americans than COVID-19. Nice job, people who wanted cheaper eggs, nice job.

    I am looking forward to the Unrivaled women’s basketball league starting play on Monday, January 5th. Four games starting at 1pm Eastern! The season lasts until March 4th.

    I finished all that I plan to do to tweak 2025 accounting. Now I have to pivot to my clients tax year end projects. I will make one more pass on my followup lists to make sure that projects are calendared. I had already flipped my wall calendar from 2025 to 2026 so that I could see the month ahead. My wall calendar each year is the Willow Press Moons calendar and the January image is a gorgeous full moon next to some western rock formations, I think from Goblin Valley Park in Utah. Inspirational!

    See all y’all later!

  19. Good New Year’s Eve to everyone. 30s now but it’ll be in the 70s by the time I log my work computer off at 3 and head to the gym. Getting in one last workout for 2025, I think it should count extra.
