Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: January 11th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  3. Good morning. It got cold! Got the heater set at 68 and even so it keeps kicking on. Got new internet yesterday, trying to figure out all this streaming stuff. So far, I don’t like it. Today: church, some cooking and I’ll get breakfast tacos from a place that’ll give me free queso for my birthday. 62. How’d that happen?

  4. It’s 28 heading for 46 and sunny. Yesterday we generated 7.9 KWHs and the m-t-d at 60 is right on track.

    I didn’t do much in the way of housekeeping thus far today but I’ve got busy plans for the kitchen this afternoon. Oatmeal pecan cookies and pork veggie soup to be precise. With my son bringing over a pork loin and cutting it into roasts for me in between the 2 cooking sessions. The pecans were a Yuletide gift. They’re too expensive for me – I stick with walnuts which are expensive enough. But such a lovely gift means I can do a GF version of my grandmother’s old WWII cookie recipe. (Pecan trees grow/grew all over the place in TX so the “cost” was gathering them & having the kids shell them.)

    Off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  5. Good Sunday morning, Moosekind! ‘Tis clear as a bell and 43 F. in Ashburn right now. Guess what, we received 1.20 inches of rain yesterday! Calloo, callay, O frabjous day! Horrible high winds will begin at 1 p.m. Guess who’s not blinking well going out!

    Have another crazy-busy day ahead, but at least I don’t have to spend time with any of the gentleman friends. I have BEAUCOUP chores to do. Also, sometimes I wish I weren’t quite so old. My schedule for Physical Therapy is conflicting with other things I want to do, but I don’t know how to put my calendar on my phone. I’m so old I still use a wall calendar. I wish it had occurred to me to photograph the January grid before I made the PT appointments.

    My liberal friends here are still livid about what happened in Minnesota. I turned on the telly and saw that thousands had demonstrated in every state. Can’t we send Indiana Jones to vanquish the loathsome creatures in the White House?

    Need to get going on my day. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

      • Jan, nor will I! My darling DIL makes a new one for me every year with pictures of Youngest Grandson and his activities through the year—building snowmen, playing lacrosse, swimming, picking apples in the fall, and standing in front of the menorah and the Christmas tree in December. Love it!

    • I like my wall calendar, I have one in the office with Nat Geo pictures of Ireland; the one at home is Kilted Yoga. Gorgeous Scotsmen doing yoga in kilts. Just risque enough that I can’t use it at work, but not actually naughty.

  6. Good afternoon, 49 and cloudy in Bellingham. I don’t know how a cold germ found me because I’ve been a weary recluse since Christmas, but oh well. I’ve got some good books to read so if I can keep my solitaire and reading around the internet habits controlled I can get lost in book world for a few days. Best wishes to all.

  7. Good morning, meeses! Monday …

    It is 39 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 64. Sunny skies are in the forecast. It looks like we will climb into the 70s later this week with lows being a more typical mid to upper 40s. The rain appears to be done for now.

    It will be interesting to see if the bubble of protection that the Supreme Court placed around the Federal Reserve can be pierced when their fuhrer demands that its independence be compromised in favor of his pet projects and deranged and delusional understanding of how the economy works. I am glad that I shifted most of my retirement savings out of the stock market this past year and went with FDIC backed instruments. Of course, if the economy crashes completely the FDIC probably won’t have enough bail out money but in theory there is an obligation to pay which the stock market does not have.

    I have a client project with a hard deadline that I was able to finally get started on yesterday. Time to put my nose back to the grindstone.

    See all y’all later!

  8. Good morning. I had a nice day yesterday. Off work this week, I slept in — woke up several times but I kept just turning over & drifting off again. Still trying to figure out the TV situation. I thought I had a solution, a tablet had the Spectrum app on it and last night I saw local stations; of course this morning they aren’t there. I keep finding apps on the fire stick that say they have local channels but they don’t. Sigh. Well, I have all week to figure it out. Anyway, I’m going to kickboxing to get out all the frustrations.

  9. It’s 31 heading for 60 and so far another sunny day. Yay! Yesterday we generated 8 KWHs – highest for the month/year so far – and the m-t-d at 68.1 is on track and gaining.

    The oatmeal-raisin-pecan cookies came out quite nicely. And the pork & veggie soup I fixed for dinner was at least palatable. Nutritious and warming was what I was aiming for and it definitely did that. Had a nice visit with my son. He’s taken his pilot written test – needed 70% to pass and made 90%. (There’s a follow-up oral exam for all the questions missed – you have to have 100% total. Flying is not an activity it’s safe to let even a 90%er do, never mind the “gentleman’s C”.) So dreams held in one’s heart for 40+ years can come true.

    As long as I keep my eyes looking very close to home, things are going well. If I look anywhere else, not so much. And on that note, I’d best be about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  10. The oatmeal-raisin-pecan cookies came out quite nicely.

    Nostalgic sigh. My mum used to make these and give them to us with milk for breakfast. She found out we wouldn’t eat just plain oatmeal.

    Now that I’m old, I eat oatmeal without any kind of sugar, but I will never forget her cookies.

  11. Good Monday morning, Moosekind! It’s a gorgeous although cold (37 F.) day with a mackerel sky. It’ll get up to 47 F. or so they say.

    Must get ready to go to the cardiologist. I’ll take my work with me in order to waste as little time as possible. (Doctors like to keep one waiting while they finish their coffee and stub out their cigarette.) This visit will take up my morning.

    This afternoon I will have Hair. Perhaps I’ll stop by Trader’s to pick up some tangerines on the way home.

    Only did HALF the chores on my to-do list yesterday. At least I did my exercise, which is something. I have so much work to do! Arrghh.

    Oh, lawks, my poor neighbor across the hall, the one who asked me to sing a duet with him, has been waiting for news from his doctor. It’s the diagnosis that all men dread. I hope it’s not going to be as bad as it looks from his PSA—is that the correct initialism? At any rate, we will not be able to sing that duet, which takes some of the pressure off me. I shall pray for him.

    Meanwhile, Goddess bless the people of Minneapolis and their tough-talkin’, F-bomb droppin’ mayor, Jacob Frey!

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

  12. Good morning, 52 and raining in Bellingham today. My restless mind is composing gardening lists but my sneezy body is not cooperating. The Christmas stuff on the min floor has turned from cozy to clutter so I’ll try to put more away today. I’m ready for clear glass, light green linens, and white candles…..longing for spring. Best wishes to all.

  13. Good Tuesday Meese. Still cold here and I have to go out to the bank. :(

  14. It’s 48 heading for 67 and sunny again today. So far anyway. Yesterday we generated 7.8 KWHs and the m-t-d at 75.9 is on track and gaining ground.

    I tried a new recipe for my lemon muffin bread yesterday and while it’s OK it’s not as good as my usual one. So. . . when I finish off this muffin bread I’ll get another organic lemon and do it the old way. Natalia’s ex pulled another “Nanny nanny boo boo, see how much I was using you” yesterday so she was late home and not very happy. But it’s one more reminder to her that he is quite capable of taking care of himself when he doesn’t have a sucker around to do it for him and she should quit worrying about him. So that part’s good.

    The world is in a lousy place and it’s getting lousier. Nothing I can do about most of it. But I can boost folks who need food, shelter, or medical stuff so I do. And I’m off to do it. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  15. Good Tuesday morning, Meese! It’s 31 F. and clear as a bell in Ashburn. Going to be milder today, with a high of 54 F.

    I have to hustle to get ready for a visit from my friend at 10. She’s weeding out her wardrobe and is offering me some clothes. I feel like Cinderella! I do need some new clothes, too, because the three Gentlemen Friends who take me to dinner have seen most of my wardrobe already.

    I have a headache from sleeping funny, but will take Tylenol. The thing is, if I use three pillows and sleep on my back, I cough much less from GERD.

    Izzenit FAB that the Texans won last night? Are they called the Houston Oilers? They were ahead 6-3 when I went to bed, but I hoped they’d win.

    Gotta run, wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

    • {{{Diana}}} If sleeping on 3 pillows & on your back helps, check into getting a bed wedge. Since it’s a single piece, it doesn’t come “unstacked” if you move during the night. Healing Energy. Moar {{{HUGS}}}

    • The Oilers moved to Tennessee and became the Titans. The Texans were a newly invented team given to them after Houston promised to not be mean to the next NFL team.

  16. Good morning. Slept in, will walk a mile and go to kickboxing this afternoon. It’s very nice having days to do very little. Still figuring out the TV situation.

  17. Good morning, meeses! Tuesday …

    It is 57 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 66. Sunny skies.

    Just time to say hi and bye and that I am not the least bit sad that Scott Adams is no longer on the mortal plane.

    See all y’all later!

  18. Good morning. I walked & did kickboxing yesterday. Loving seeing the stories of communities organizing to take immigrant families groceries so they don’t have to go out. There is hope that we can overcome this horror show. For me, today will be: kickboxing, walking, sending out emails about the AIDS Ride, trying to figure out the TV thing.

  19. It’s 46 going to 46 – as in we’re going to be at this temp the whole day before things drop like a rock after sundown. It can’t decide whether to be cloudy or clear. Yesterday we generated 7.9 KWHs and the m-t-d at 83.8 has gained enough to handle a cloudy day and stay on track for 180. So that part’s good.

    Work garbage has Natalia so frustrated and burned out that she’s not sure she’ll make it to the end of this fiscal year, much less 2 calendar years. And considering who’s running the state and making rules for the state university system there’s not a whole lot of hope it’ll get better. I hope she can hold out until full Social Security retirement but she’s already OK for full university retirement (which is an age + years of service calculation). So if she can’t hold out, she can take university retirement to cover the next 2 years and then take her Social Security retirement.

    I’ve got errands to run today – vet to pick up Cloud’s meds, drop off library books, Walmart for cat food & the like. Gonna treat ourselves tonight with breakfast for dinner – buckwheat cakes, ham, and maybe spice apples on the side.

    It’s 3 years today since Bobby Neary/Chef Bobby/nuevepionero died. sigh. Miss you, Bobby.

    Off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}
