Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: January 18th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

    When members of WCK’s #ChefsForJamaica teams spoke with Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness about our efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa, we made sure he knew that Jamaicans were at the heart of all 6.6 million meals we served. (1/3)

    Hurricane Melissa deepened an already extremely fragile situation in #Haiti, where millions of children have long lived in fear, displacement and deprivation.

  3. Good morning. It’s freezing here & will be for a couple more hours. I covered my plants, not the hours-long 2-3 layers I do when it’s going to freeze all night. But I figured even just dropping a worn-out sheet on top of them would help. Anyway, today: got to leave for church early because there’s a half-marathon this morning and there’s no way to get there without crossing the route. Later, there’ll be cooking and putting together breakfast for next week.

  4. It was 9 windchill zero when I got up & about 3 degrees “warmer” at the moment. There are definitely clouds in the sky but at the moment they aren’t between the sun & me/my house. Or my solar panels. Yesterday we generated 7.43 KWHs and the m-t-d at 112.6 is actually on track to get over 200 this month. We’ve got definitely cloudy and maybe rainy weather coming this week so I doubt it’ll last. But it’s nice to have the possibility.

    Today is the 37th anniversary of my mother’s passing. I doubt I’m the same person I was at 37 but I hope Momma would be/is as proud of me as she was then. She was only 58 when she left, but she left me with a lot of guidance for how to live life as a good person. I’ve been/am doing my best.

    Time to be about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  5. Good Sunday morning, Moosekind! It’s 34 F. in Ashburn right now. It was raining in a most satisfactory manner when I peeped out at 6:30 a.m., but seems to have stopped now. Any rain at all is very welcome: three-fourths of Virginia is in severe drought.

    Nice to have a new governor in this commonwealth. I like everything she’s done so far. I need a new 25-watt bulb for the little fake woodstove. If I can get it from Amazon, I wouldn’t have to go out to Lowe’s today. That would be nice, as I still have the cough and a lot of work to get through. Auditions begin tomorrow night and I am not prepared!

    Time to get to work, m’hearties. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  6. Good morning. Going to savor the heck out of my last 3 days of vacation. Not going to the community march, between the speeches and everything, it is too long on my feet.

  7. Good morning, meeses! Monday …

    It is 50 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 72. Sunny skies are in the forecast. The week ahead shows another dip in the temperatures and a chance for rain on the weekend. The moon was new on Sunday and I will be grabbing some waxing energy to get me through the rest of the month and into February.

    The news gets more bizarre and chaotic as the braining capabilities of the Republican Party’s president keeps shrinking. Is there any chance they will rein him in? My guess is no. I pray that America’s one-time allies rise to the occasion and resist complying with the madman the MAGAts elected.

    Martin Luther King Jr Day is observed in Tucson by all the governmental entities and many businesses. I am surprised that the petty ahole in the Oval Office has not cancelled it as “too woke.”

    I have many irons in the fire this morning but wanted to check in before the sun rises. Now it is time to get back to work. I have a couple more days of hard deadlines and then I can work more or less at my own pace.

    See all y’all later!

  8. Good Monday morning, Moosekind, and a blessed MLK Day to you all.

    It’s 25 F. and clear in Ashburn, going up to 41 F. later. Today will be busy: have a meeting with the UUs at 10, then I really ought to get my hair done, and after that I need to get ready for the audition at 7. I hope my cough is gone. Made banana bran muffins with walnuts this morning, gave most to the neighbors. Wish I had the time and energy to go to the gym.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

  9. It’s 22 windchill 15 and overcast. Widget says snow but the chance is like 30%. We’ve got the clouds of course. Yesterday we did another “highest this month & year so far” day – generating 8.79 & the m-t-d at 121.39 still on track for 200. It will probably lose ground today unless the clouds move off. Which they’re not predicted to do until sundown.

    Natalia’s home from work today so we did something different for breakfast – used up the rest of that lemon muffin bread I’d made in French toast. It was quite nice. We might go get haircuts today. Maybe. But first I need to get onto my boosting. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  10. Good morning, 32 and sunny outside my windows today. I’m tempted to plant primroses but I need to work at my desk and I should put the rest of Christmas away. My computer dilemma has distracted me but I’ve got it sorted for now. Best wishes to all.

  11. Tuesday Meese. 14 degrees here in Kingston atm, going up to a high of 21.

    • Wouldn’t it be amazing if the churches started practicing Christianity and helped the poor, the sick and the homeless? It is disgusting that most of the terrible things done to our country in the past 75 years was shat out by the White Male Evangelical Christianists in their bid to turn the country into a theocracy controlled by them.

  12. It’s 13 windchill 9 but at least it’s sunny today. Yesterday it wasn’t. We generated 4.25 KWHs and the m-t-d at 125.62 lost ground but is still on track for 180.

    Anybody know both good & bad points on Duck Duck Go? They apparently offer an AI-free version and I’m thinking of trying it. If I can get my serious reluctance to relog into everything and try to get all my “favorites” on a toolbar of some kind. But I’m really tired of AI trying to force feed me whatever the techbro-programmed algorithm thinks I’m supposed to be looking for rather than what I’m actually looking for.

    Anyway, I need to bake muffin bread today – probably peanut butter apricot jam bread – but first I need to get my boosting started. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

    • AI is horrible. It is often wrong and always way too ubiquitous. I don’t know much about Duck Duck Go but I think Diana uses it.

    • Yes, bfitz, I do use DuckDuckGo and have been for a year. The most annoying thing about it is that you can’t have bookmarks; or rather, you can, but it’s such a complicated process to get them that I can’t be bothered.

      So far, I just keep hitting the little DuckDuckGo icon on the home screen until it coughs up the Moose site and the Sick of Bernie site. I don’t recommend my methods! (Grin)

      • That is a drawback. I’ll see what I can do to figure it out. There are 11 sites (including my Freecell game which may or may not even work on DDG) that I use daily so I’d rather have a favorites or bookmark bar of icons to click on. LOL. Thank you. {{{Diana}}}

  13. Good morning. I had a whole thing written, accidentally deleted. Anyway, going to enjoy penultimate day of vacation. Kickboxing — good for body and mind.

  14. Good morning, meeses! Tuesday …

    It is 50 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 70. Sunny skies are in the forecast. My waxing moon is at 3.1% illumination and my moon phases widget tells me that I may see her if I look ESE at 8:44am (plus mountain clearance time). Since that is after sunrise and she is so thin, it is unlikely I will see her but I will try!

    My Badger Women’s Basketball team played the Oregon Duckies on Sunday and beat them in double overtime. I got a chance to watch it yesterday on streaming DVR and it was great. I am not sure what will happen with the Arizona Wildcats – they lost their best scorer to injury and face a daunting schedule. I will read about them but probably not watch them often.

    Busy day today.

    See all y’all later!

  15. Good morning, 33 and light clouds. After so many cloudy days the sun seems bright and the low angle makes driving home in the afternoon a challenge. Makes me want to stay cocooned in familiar grey. The Christmas ornaments are now on the dining room table so if I stay focused the tree will go back in the box and the rest of Christmas will finally be put away. Best wishes to all.

  16. Good Tuesday evening, Meese. It’s been a hail of a day, to wit:

    What a day! Morning: arrived at the doctor’s office early in case they wanted me to fill our forms. This was at 10 to 9. At 9:20 the doctor herself breezed in, sat down behind the reception desk, and proceeded to eat her breakfast (a yogurt). Finally I was seen. Nurse Ratchet gave me a vision test, then wanted to dilate my eyes. “No way,” I protested. “I’ve got a rehearsal at 1 o’clock!”

    The good news was that I do not have macular degeneration or regrowth of cataracts. What I have is “dry eye.” Have to use eye drops three times a day. No problem.

    This afternoon I had practice for “Open Mic” night. As the guy across the hall, who asked me to sing a duet with him, is ill, I chose another song: “I Just Want to Dance With You.” Two experienced singers were already in the room with the pianist when I arrived. “You going to sing?” one of them asked. “Yes, ” I said. “No laughing, no crying, and no audible praying.” They laughed and scuttled out, leaving me with the pianist. T. is very nice, an old hand at singing and playing the piano and helping others to sing. He didn’t appear to think I’m as hopeless as I do. He told me to sing for 20 minutes a day, admitted that he was also nervous when he had to sing and play with other people around, and said he’d sing along with me. This is great, because at first I was singing the “Oh, oh, oh” and it was messing up my timing.

    Then physical therapy. The nurse told me to use a heating pad. Decided not to mention I’m using what I think is a weed-based cream (CBD? Hempvana?) for the pain.

    But the thing of which I am most proud is that I came home and screwed around. Yes, I had already unscrewed the back of the fake woodstove and taken the light bulb out. The guy at the bulb store said it was 25 watts and that he didn’t have one, so I ordered it from Amazon. Wow, it fitted! I screwed it into place and then screwed the back of the stove on, even though I had the wrong size screwdriver. (Don’t know where the other screwdrivers are.) Anyway, the fake flames are now dancing cheerfully through through the lattice window of the little woodstove, making me feel far more cheerful. So that was my day! Will shut up now.

    Hope everyone at the Pond has had a good day. Bone-chillingly cold here in Ashburn.

  17. Good morning. We are apparently going to have some serious winter weather this weekend. So, part of my last day of vacation will be spent moving my plants around and covering them in several layers. Which is weird, because today & tomorrow it’ll be sunny & 70s. One other thing I want to do is figure out the TV thing. I miss live TV & being able to change channels. Yes definitely a problem of privilege, I know.

  18. Today is the 1st of 2 relatively warm days (mid 50s) before the cold front moves in. We’re supposed to get snow – multiple inches of it – highs in the teens & lows in single digits. But for now it’s 40, overcast and trying to clear off from the clouds and rain we got/weren’t supposed to get overnight. Yesterday we generated 8.44 KWHs and the m-t-d at 134 is on track to over 180.

    My Social Security came in & it’s $25.10 more per month than it was in 2025, so the increased Medicare premium didn’t eat all the COLA. Bank, library, and grocery store today. And sometime today trying to get on Duck Duck Go. But first I need to be about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  19. Wednesday Meese. When I took the garbage out this morning it was 0 degrees. It’s now 9.
    Puerto Rico

    Interesting. Trump brought up Greenland in 2019. Back then he was surrounded by people who could say "no". This time it's psychopathic techbros and Heritage.

    He wanted to swap Greenland for Puerto Rico because Puerto Ric was "dirty".
