Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: October 26th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

    Morning low of 59 degrees in the Desert Southwest 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 82. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

    Have a great day, all y’alls!!

  2. Good morning. It is cool enough that I may wear long sleeves to church. Meanwhile, just the usual: steeping tea, local news, getting ready for the working week. But wow, it is 62 degrees, brrrr!

  3. It’s 55 heading for 60 and overcast again. May or may not and probably won’t get more rain. All these cloudy days and we’ve gotten less than an inch. Sigh. Yesterday we generated 2.4 KWHs and the m-t-d at 185.3 lost a lot more ground. We will definitely be lucky to reach 200 for the month.

    I didn’t have to vacuum today because Natalia did it Friday, so I slept in instead. Well, drowsed thinking about how next Sunday we’ll be off “government time” and back on “god’s time” under the warm covers rather than actual sleep. But it was pleasant, whether or not it was restoring. Eating my oatmeal and about to start my boosting day. Holding the Good Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  4. Good morning, 49 and calm after a windy night. The garden is full of leaves but so far no branches are down so I relax and enjoy the changing season today. It’s time to pick the Sparta apples from the memorial tree we planted for Ron’s dad so I think I’ll find the apple cake recipe his mom shared with me years ago. We’re both feeling sentimental today so the smell of a cake baking will be welcome. Best wishes to all.

  5. Monday Meese. Have hot water (yay) Switched from gas to electric – was much cheaper to do.

    • {{{Dee}}} Yay! for hot water! Cheaper to do electric hot water than gas? Gas must be hella expensive where you are. And the electricity relatively cheap. But whatever works best for you is good. Moar {{{HUGS}}}

      • Natural gas is not cheap in New England, mostly just in the Midwest. Everything here is electric because it is easier to run overhead wires than pipelines.

        • I guess that figures. Other than 3 years in CA and 3 years in WI, I’ve spent my 74 years in TX, KS, and AR. I guess it shows. LOL

  6. Good morning. We got some nice rain over the weekend, and now it’s cooling off. Might actually be fall by Thursday or so. I had a good walk, still not up to where I was, but every walk gets me closer.

  7. It’s 55 heading for 63 and overcast. No rain, just clouds. (All these cloudy days – this is the 4th in a row – have given us less than an inch of rain.) Yesterday we generated 2 KWHs and the m-t-d at 187.26 lost more ground.

    Winding down October. For all that it’s my birth month and I had a lovely birthday, it hasn’t been a good month for a whole lot of people. And November is going to be worse as 50 million or so people, mostly children, go from little food to no food. Happy Thanksgiving and all that. The food banks – “charity” – can’t handle it. Never could. That’s why govt programs were started in the 1st place. And what the food banks could have done last year was already cut in half or more early this year by the Agri cuts – all ordered without authority but the orders were obeyed anyway. I don’t know if I’ll get more folks in my boosting threads but I know I’ll have more desperate folks in my threads. And they’re already pretty desperate. I’d best get to boosting them. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Energy to everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  8. Good morning, meeses. Monday …

    Cool morning, will be sunny and 85 or so this afternoon. I have errands to run so I am just doing a quick check in.

    See all y’all later!

  9. Good morning, 46 and partly sunny now. I woke up to a cloudy sky so it’s nice to see the sunlight shinning on the leaves of the old maple trees. I want to cut some hydrangeas this morning and have a hair cut this afternoon so today should be ok. Best wishes to all.

  10. Good morning. We have high fire danger today because of high winds & no humidity. It warmed back up before the cool down, still looking forward to that.

  11. Tuesday Meese. Things look really bad for Jamaica.

  12. It’s 56 heading for 58 overcast and supposed to start raining any time now. Yesterday we generated 2.91 KWHs and the m-t-d at 190.16 lost more ground. We’ve 4 production days left in Oct so it’s technically possible to beat out Oct 2024’s 209 and not be in last place for production. But it’s not likely. We’ll be doing good to reach 200. sigh.

    I got about 5 hours of sleep, in 2 largeish chunks and I’m groggy as all get out. Slow and clumsy today. Depending on whether or not we really do get the projected rain today I might go get a haircut or something. At least take back my library books and visit the grocery store. We shall see. Meanwhile I need to pull enough particles together to be about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  13. Good afternoon, Meeses! Tuesday …

    Another too busy day. It is 84 degrees now, was 61 for my morning walk.

    The Republican Congress has no interest in keeping 42 million people from starving when SNAP money runs out. Even if they could cobble together an emergency bill, their president is out of the country shaking down world leaders. Goddess help those who have no way to put food on the table.

    See all y’all later!

  14. Good afternoon, 51 and raining in Bellingham today. I was at the PT clinic early this morning and as suspected advancing arthritis requires a new management plan. I’m grateful for Kieth’s wise and caring assistance. Best wishes to all.

  15. Good morning. It’s actually chilly, if I was heading to the office I’d wear a sweater. Quite exciting, though the fire danger remains because no humidity & high winds. Had a very productive day yesterday, hope today goes well also.

  16. Good morning, meeses! Wednesday …

    It is 59 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 86. Sunny skies are in the forecast. The moon is at first quarter but she is not in my sight lines – I have not seen her since just before she was new! I hope to see her on Samhain.

    I have been too busy by half but I am seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. This morning I will go sit with my car while a repair is done. I have been trying to find time to get the car into the shop and between the roof repair and car-sharing conflicts I couldn’t. Today I can finally get it done. It is one of those “should be fixed sooner rather than later” and will help my 22 year old car stay safe to drive.

    See all y’all later!

  17. It’s 44, windchill 35, overcast, and drizzling. Yesterday we generated 1.1 KWHs and the m-t-d is 191.3 – maybe we will and probably we won’t make it to 200 for the month. But as best I can calculate, 180 is still enough to cover usage in a month without A/C, even with 2 people in the house.

    Yesterday Natalia managed to get through the “real ID” rigamarole in just under an hour. It helps of course that she’s never changed her name – neither adoption nor marriage – so she only had to bring her birth certificate and proof of address. Fortunately she changed her address a few weeks after moving back in with me so she had the “official” documentation to do it with. A positive note in an otherwise negative world.

    Aji’s raising funds to buy grocery store gift cards to hand out to folks who depend on SNAP. She hadn’t meant to even start taking names until Friday but as soon as The Word got out. . . by noon yesterday there were 8 Elders (4 in the Pueblo and 4 in the county) and 4 families already on the list. She’s having to do it as a passthru – get them via her PayPal (if anybody wants to contribute put “SNAP replacement” in the note) then buy the cards – because none of the card companies will ship to a P.O. box. So she’s having to manage this all along the line. She’s going to drive herself into the ground. She doesn’t have the time or energy and they’ve got some heavy expenses coming she already doesn’t have money for. But she can’t stand by while people starve. And she’s already tearing herself up for the folks she can’t help. She’s just not wired that way. Over 40% of Taos County is on SNAP. Mostly but not totally Native.

    I’m OK – and have “survivor’s guilt” to a certain extent because I am OK. sigh. White/colonizer culture is evil. Anyway, I’d best be about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  18. Good morning, Moosekind! We are still alive! It’s 48 F. going to 52 F. in Ashburn with (naturally) overcast skies. Rain is expected. Actually, I was thrilled to discover that we had a shower last night before bedtime. Every little drop helps reduce the severe drought we’re in.

    We have been rushing from appointment to appointment and it’s so tiring. Yesterday we left our flat before 10 and didn’t reach home again until just after 1 p.m. I gave Dearly some lunch, after which he went to sleep, and went to a “rage meeting” of the Drama Club Board at 2 p.m. Someone who isn’t even a member of the Board to order unnecessarily elaborate programs for the play (which opens tomorrow) and expects the club to pay for them. Resident Life informed us snippily that they certainly weren’t going to pay for them, so we’ll have to—and that wrecks our budget. We’re going to pass a resolution that NO expenditure will be paid without Board approval.

    Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Dearly never woke up until 5:30. Yesterday was just a waste, although we did get some useful errands done.

    Small beer compared to what real people are going through. Our gubernator gave every taxpayer in Virginia $200 because we have to (sob!) pay taxes (actually the tax burden in this state us one of the lightest in the country), so I’ll donate that to the food bank. Then I received a little money that I wasn’t really expecting, so a second food bank will also receive a check. I don’t really trust the U.S. mail, but I simply don’t have time to drive out there and back.

    Feeling a little sad that I’m not still in the play. There are rumors floating that the upcoming spring musical has already been cast. Huh? There haven’t been auditions yet! Don’t know whether I should try out—I’m thinking “no” at this point—owing to Dearly’s situation.

    It’s wrong to hate people, but I loathe Mango Mussolini, Stephen “Goebbels” Miller, and J. D. (“can’t keep it in his pants”) Vance. Causing all this misery for their own compatriots! Now Thing is talking about turning the military loose on us! He wants civil war so he can declare martial law.

    Oh, it’s all too gloomy to contemplate. I’d better stop now and think about how I won’t send my usual Christmas letter to friends and family this year. Who wants to hear about the awfulness?

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

    • Will your useless governor, the Fleece Fascist, be replaced by a Democrat soon? Polls seem to suggest that Spanbauer was winning handily but I don’t trust polls.

      • Apparently she has a 13-point lead. The guy running for AG is a careless eejit but I have to vote for him. If I leave it blank, narrow-eyed, mean-mouthed Jason Miyares will win, and he’ll do his best to stop the Democrats from achieving anything.
