Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: January 4th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good afternoon, Moosekind! It’s 58 F. in Ashburn, if you please, and our ugly gray morning has given way to weak sunshine and partly blue skies.

    The last few days have been crazy-busy. Yesterday I went to Physical Therapy and after S. put me through my paces, she gave me a list of the same exercises to do at home. I’m supposed to do them twice a day at home. Say what, sugah? If I do those, as well as regular gym (which I need), I’ll have NO time for anything else.

    Today I was taken out for a large, lovely lunch by a friend. After the main course, the server asked what we wanted for dessert. When the magic words “carrot cake” were uttered, I quivered and asked for a slice to take home in a box. I’m going to share it with the other half of the duet across the hall. Like me, he is a carrot cake fiend.

    Speaking of duets, we watched some videos on his iPad and picked two songs that were more recognizable to me—did I mention this before? The Kingston Trio’s “MTA” and Willie Nelson’s “Ain’t She Sweet” should be easy enough to learn. Then we went to a late dinner with two other members of the Drama Club. Here’s the thing about late dinners: by the time one arrives home, there is no evening left. Went to bed on time but had a miserable night.

    Tonight I’m having dinner with some neighbors. Not much dinner, mind you, after that lunch. Hoping to be able to get some stuff done this evening.

    Little did I think that at this time of my life I’d be living in a country that had a madman in the White House. Venezuela? GREENLAND? For Goddess’ sake! If he attacks and NATO comes to Greenland’s defense, that would be the end of the NATO alliance! Why does no one stop him? Is it the threat of being primaried? What would be so bad about that? All I can say is, it’s INSANE and we shouldn’t have to put up with a madman who thinks he’s king of the world. As for Stephen (Goebbels) Miller, a pox on all his camels and may the fumes from his poppy fields overcome him.

    Well, I’m going to drink my tea. I’ve decided I’ll cut down, not out. One cup of coffee a day only, and one mug of tea a day only.

    Hoping everyone at the Pond has had a good day so far. BTW, exercise is BO-RING and she said I’d have to do leg exercises for the rest of my life. Well, uh, ah, I’ll try it.

  2. Good morning, meeses! Thursday …

    It is 46 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 55. Partly sunny this morning but the rain returns in the afternoon. Yesterday it rained all day long with a front stalled over us. It varied from light rain to heavy rain to heavier rain. Today there should be some breaks so that I can get my walk in. This is the winter rain we were missing last year and in 2024 but which we had an abundance of in 2023. The rain is needed to fill the reservoirs especially this sort of steady rain rather than wild downpours.

    It is so depressing to see history repeating itself. Republicans attack a country for the oil, take it over and try to run it, make a hash of it then turn it over to the next Democratic president to sort it out. That president gets blamed for any less than perfect solution to end our engagement and is castigated by the right-wing. I wonder if Marco Rubio’s presidential ambitions will be helped or hurt by his nation building plans? I guess we will soon find out if a core of the MAGAts really voted for the rotting pumpkin because he said he was against foreign wars or if it was just more bs covering up that they all voted for the christian white nationalist because they are rabid racists and haters of everything decent.

    I always forget how time consuming delayed end of year accounting is. I need to put in a calendar reminder for about June 30th, nagging myself to gather accounting data to make the end of year easier.

    See all y’all later!

  3. Good morning. Got to work early so I walked a mile & a half. Two days in the office then I’m off for a week, actually more. I posted U2’s Peace On Earth in the #earworm thread, that song is getting too much use lately. “Their lives were bigger than any big idea”

  4. It was 55 at dawn, already 63, heading for 70 and overcast. Supposed to get rain today, which we need, and then – maybe – clear off in the afternoon. I hope so. Yesterday we generated 6.3 KWHs and the m-t-d at 41.9 is not quite on track. And will probably lose ground today.

    Natalia’s having a bad day. With her aunt’s death the legally-blind cousin who lived with her aunt (they sort of were caregivers for each other) will probably be moving to NJ to live with her older sister and that’s the end of the “Seattle connection” for the family. And since the last time the family gathered there, a few years ago, it was to disperse her mother’s ashes, that bites. She texted the Chair saying she was having “a bad day” and she’d be in late. He texted back for her to take the day if she needed it. He doesn’t know about the death in the family but he knows her divorce was rough and work, with all the searches going on, is too.

    The not exactly warm but not really cold plus a front moving in is messing with my back/joints and sinuses. And lack of sunshine always messes with my head. Sigh. Oh well. Not even real problems compared with being without shelter or food or needed medications – or being shot by ICE. I’d best be about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  5. Good Thursday morning, Meese! Forgot to tell y’all that I saw the Moon on Sunday night. She was pale yellow, absolutely lovely. Next full moon is February 1. Right now we have clear skies and sunlight in Ashburger. It’s 52 F., going up to 59 F. later.

    Tomorrow we are supposed to have blessed, blessed rain, but I’m not holding my breath.

    Must jump in the shower, get dressed and head for the drugstore, which luckily is on campus. Have to pick up some spirolactone. I’m slowly working my way through the 11 items on my “To Do” list, but this afternoon I’ve the writers’ group and the Happy Hour Sing-Along. So it will be late before I get home.

    Oh, dear. I’m already tired and the day’s only half over! Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

  6. Good morning, 40 and cloudy outside my windows today. My dermatology appointment was just a consult so patch testing will happen after he returns from paternity leave. But given how reactive my immune system is it’s prolly best to wait. I haven’t made any progress with putting Christmas away but it can wait as well. Best wishes to all.

  7. Good morning, meeses! Friday …

    It is 37 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 52. Sunny skies are in the forecast. It looks like the rain has stopped after dropping about an inch on the region. Snow on Mount Lemmon but the roads were closed (because “snow on Mount Lemmon”!) so it might be a while before people can go up there to look at it. Only 5 inches of snow so there won’t be any skiing yet. They are still predicting 32 degrees in Tucson for tomorrow morning. I hope not, the older housing around here is not made to handle freezing weather. I saw the moon’s light this morning on my deck but could not crane my head enough to see her around the soffit.

    It is stunning to me that Republican electeds are just fine with a gestapo run by Stephen Miller killing people to enforce a flawed approach to immigration enforcement. That there isn’t a nationwide hue and cry over what is happening in Minneapolis and Portland and Chicago is a permanent blemish on the soul of our country. If we are allowed to vote these monstrosities out of office, it will still take years to clean up the messes they are making and repair the lives they are ruining. Goddess help us all.

    I finished my last bit of personal accounting this morning and have started the prep on 2026 client projects queued up for the weekend. I need to make sure today that I have all the things I need from clients in order to proceed.

    See all y’all later!

  8. Good morning. I gave up on sleep at 10 till 4. Was downtown and walking at 5:20. Got in a mile and a half. Just have to hang on till 5, then I’m off for 10 days.

  9. It’s 41 heading for 60 and clear at the moment. Hopefully will be clear most of the day. Yesterday we generated 3 KWHs and the m-t-d at 44.88 lost more ground.

    One of these days I assume the houses next door will actually be completed. Ground broke on them last July. But there are guys out there working on them. Not many guys which probably explains how slow it’s going. That and the fact they start a new house whenever they hit certain stage in the previous ones. I understand there are 4 more sited and to be built on that property. (Between early and late 2025 the owner managed to purchase the rest of the property down to the end of the block and north to the creek.) We’ll see if any of them get finished before the Crash comes.

    Meanwhile there are folks to boost. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  10. Good Friday morning, Moosekind! It’s another gray day here. They say we’re getting rain this afternoon. Last night after I arrived home from the Happy Hour Sing-Along, I was totally wiped. Nuked and ate a highly processed ziti marinara, then sloped off to bed.

    This morning I’ve a visitor coming at 10:30, another at noon, and Physical Therapy at 3. Then I have a dinner date around 5. I’ll have to look at my phone. This guy texts me five times a day, would like to text more, and it’s getting on my nerves. Anyway, that’s going to be my day. Hope everyone here will have a good day and…Goddess help us! We’re living in a vast lunatic asylum. 🤪

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond and, as our dear bfitz says, healing energy to all.

  11. Good morning, 43 and cloudy in Bellingham today. I’m so tempted to find my gardening clothes and prune the tall rugosa rose bush growing by the vegi garden. The leaves are gone now so I can see the branches I want to remove, but I should prolly wait until Bri returns, but I may clip a branch or two and see what happens next. Best wishes to all.

  12. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

    It is 34 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 54. Sunny skies are in the forecast. The third quarter moon is bright and high in the ESE sky this morning, bathing my deck in moonlight. I couldn’t stay out there very long to admire her because it is very cold!

    I am not going to click on my news feed this morning because I really don’t want to know what fresh hell the rotting pumpkin and his henchmen have wrought. I do wonder sometimes if Mitch “We Have Guardrails for Trump” McConnell has even a twitch of regret for what he allowed to happen. Probably not but history won’t forget when the perpetrators of these brutal crimes on humanity are finally ousted.

    I am now fully immersing myself in 2026 client projects. I had a bit of a surprise when the Turbo Tax forms were finally available and I ran my first pass on 2025 taxes. I am going to need to work a little harder than I want to this year and especially the first quarter to pay the bills. Thankfully I am relatively healthy and delaying full retirement a bit will not be a huge hardship as I have yet to find a hobby that engages my interest.

    See all y’all later!

  13. Good morning. Yesterday was warm enough for just long sleeves, now it’s 43 & the wind is howling. Heading to kickboxing then I’ll come back and get ready for the google fiber guy. Most reports are that the switch has been easy. I hope so, because I’m hosting the music diary at the orange place tonight. Come by at 6pm central. Completely non-political, I just posted music from my favorite bands because my birthday is tomorrow. And my musical question is what people would post in their diary on their birthday. It’s actually a sneaky way to get more people to consider hosting. There’s a group of regulars and we all take turns, but the more the merrier.

  14. WordPress just did the thing I absolutely hate the most. Logged me out while I was in the process of typing my post. I checked to be sure I was logged in before I started typing my post so I didn’t copy my post before hitting post comment.

    It’s 38 heading for 42 & cloudy. Yesterday we generated 7.29 KWHs & the m-t-d at 52 is not on track. I don’t remember what else I said. Something about whether or not I’d be able to get to my stream at DK (I had that linked when I was banned and that’s how I find diaries for folks I follow/ed) when it moves to WordPress. I doubt it. I really don’t remember what else. Sigh. Anyway. Off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

    For those who think Greenland would be a state, look at Puerto Rico, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands or any other U.S. territory. They don't have full representation in Congress. Their voting rights are different. Also see the awful Insular Cases which have never been overruled. 🇺🇸⚖️ #greenland

  17. Good gray Saturday morning, Meese. It’s 44 F. in Ashburn and about to R-A-I-N, Goddess be thanked. We are still in drought. Even the weather wizards mention it nowadays.

    ‘Tis no matter. Have 1,536 chores to do at the computer. Just checked and it’s and raining heavily now. Good!

    Have a date for dinner with a lovely woman from the Drama Club, dinner followed by a movie in the Great Oak Clubhouse It’s become a standard Saturday night event with us.

    Had a nice dinner date yesterday with Gentleman No. 1. He must be smitten: he ordered and is reading Starhawk’s The Spiral Dance to understand Wicca, and yesterday after dinner I showed him how to download Kindle books to his iPad. This morning he reported that he’s downloaded Saving the World Through Sex and Long, Long Way to Run.

    I am a bit wary of some of the things he says. If he’s looking for Ro-mance, that is the farthest thing from my mind. Friendship is one thing, but I don’t know that I will ever be ready for Ro-Mance. It’s only been 2 months since my poor husband died. Anyway, I’ll never find anyone like Dearly, and considering that the fortune teller from India told me I’d pop my clogs at age 87, there’s not much time. (The Death Clock app on my phone says I’ll joss it in early March 2036.)

    But enough of that chitchat. This morning I made blueberry muffins and took some to the neighbors before enjoying a couple for my own breakfast. They contained only half of the sugar called for by the recipe, because the light brown sugar had become so hard I had to whack it with a rolling pin, then roll it into fine crumbs. The muffins still tasted just fine.

    Tired of sitting here at the computer, I’m going to finish getting washed and brushed and go to the gym. Why do I never get out of her until 11? It’s weird!

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.
