Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: February 22nd

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

    Morning low of 45 degrees in the Desert Southwest 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 73. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast.

    Have a great day, all y’alls!!

  2. Upon learning of the death of salsa legend Willie Colon – I went back and posted some articles about the links between Salsa musicians and political struggle. RIP Willie.

    • {{{Dee}}} At least you’re prepared. Stay as safe – and comfortable – as you can.

    • Sis, we were luckier than you in that regard. The last of our “snowcrete” has pretty much disappeared from our grassy areas and streets. The snow predicted to begin this afternoon is supposed to be much gloppier and quicker to melt.

  3. Good morning. We’re having a cold snap, but it’s only in the 40s and nothing like people in the northeast are facing. I un-bunched my plants yesterday, pretty sure there won’t be another freeze. Tea is steeping, this afternoon I’m making a stir fry for next week. All good thought to people facing that blizzard.

  4. It’s 29 heading for 45 and sunny. Yesterday we generated right at 13 KWHs and the m-t-d hit 200.76 – so Yay! I don’t know what the next target is because I can’t hold the cursor steady enough on the bar in the chart for it to do anything more than flash at me and give me a headache. (& blast the techbros who redesigned the monitoring portal site – the column where that bar graph resides used to be wide enough that the bars were wide enough I could keep my cursor on one long enough to read the data pop up.)

    I wish I could say I’m running late because I did housework but actually it’s because I had a disturbed night then slept until 7. Oh well. Off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  5. Good Sunday morning, Moosekind, and blessings on all your camels (if you have any).

    Yesterday got away from me completely. I ran to Trader Joe’s (yes, on a Saturday, and it wasn’t that bad), bought what I needed, and scuttled home. The Drama Club meeting was held yesterday at 1:30, so I went to that. Last night I edited the diabetes article and after I incorporate the edits, I’ll see if there’s time for the gym.

    It began raining while we were asleep and continues to rain steadily in a most satisfactory manner. Guess what, when I stepped onto the porch last night to see what was going on with the weather, I saw Herself! True, she appeared only as a silver slice that looked like a smile, but I was thrilled. Hadn’t seen Her in WEEKS, and I was amazed to see her from the screened porch! Not often that such a thing happens.

    I have a dinner date at 5 p.m., but since snow is predicted through TUESDAY, the Powers will probably do what they usually do: cancel all reservations and serve the dinner menu buffet-style. During the last storm 100 staff stayed overnight to feed us a continental breakfast the next morning, a boxed lunch, and a buffet-style dinner. They do their best to make us pampered oldsters happy.

    Y’all going to watch the SOTU Tuesday night? I’m so fascinated that someone with the vocabulary of a third-grader is going to deliver such an important speech that I won’t be able to help watching it. May fall asleep from sheer boredom but you never know. My lovely governor, Abigail Spanberger, will deliver the opposition speech.

    Must run to check how the American ice hockey team is doing against Canada. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

    • {{{Diana}}} I call that a “Cheshire” moon – the smile without the cat. If you look closely you can see the faint image of the cat above the smile. Moar {{{HUGS}}}

  6. Good morning. Gave up on sleep before 4, got downtown and was walking at 5:15. Very depressing. But 1.6 mi. If I can’t sleep, at least I can exercise.

  7. Monday Meese. We missed the worst part of the blizzard here in Kingston – only got about 2 inches so far. Phew.

  8. It’s 21 wind chill 11 heading for 47 but at least the wind will die down and only drop the “feels like” to 45. It’s sunny which is usually cheering. Yesterday we generated 14.23 – the days are indeed getting longer – and the m-t-d is at 215. With 6 more production days left in the month.

    Had a nice phone visit with my younger son yesterday. (It was his 52nd birthday.) Too much coughing/not enough energy to get much housework done but at least the pork veggie chili I made for dinner came out well. I’m beginning to wonder if the WorkDay program isn’t a data-gathering and sabotage effort on the part of somebody – foreign or domestic – intent on demoralizing our workforce and seriously decreasing US productivity. Natalia, poor woman, is dealing with it in every aspect of her job – accounting, procurement, payroll, travel, student enrollment, grades, everything – and she’s seriously thinking of walking out the door/retiring (she’s not old enough for full Social Security retirement but she’s more than old enough for the University retirement) on a daily basis. My son – the CPA – told me his company was “ordered” to switch to WorkDay by somebody/thing with authority over the company CFO 3 years ago and they’ve been on it a year now. He says (& his CFO agrees) it’s a piece of crap, a “Rube Goldberg” contraption that takes a thousand steps to do a job their previous software did in 3 – and even after the thousand steps may not give you the information you need. I’m saying once is chance, twice is coincidence, 3 times is enemy action. And enemy action from some person, organization, or state (foreign or domestic) with the authority to force public and private entities to use this piece of crap. I hope somebody with a lot more skill and connections than I’ll ever have is looking into this.

    The cough still won’t go away and now I’m having night sweats as well. Just what I needed. More things to disturb my sleep. Oh well. I’m still getting more sleep than many people I know – including at the Moose Pond. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

    • Bfitz, I’m so sorry this awful “whatever-it-is” is lingering like this! Do you suppose a doctor visit is in order? Perhaps they could prescribe something to end it quickly? Hope so!

      • Well, there’s no fever & no body aches or anything else that indicates either a viral or bacterial infection. And that’s pretty much what a doctor would Rx for. I looked up cough from chill and wets when chilled and basically – from the site I more or less trust – it said could be anything from stress to a heart attack. But I don’t have anything else that would indicate heart attack. I definitely have stress. And even more, one of the things it might be is dehydration. I’m dehydrated and no matter what I do – or what I can do (that I know of) – I stay dehydrated. More than 2-1/2 quarts of water over the course of the day makes me sick. Oral rehydration makes me sick. Anything with artificial flavors and/or colors and/or sweeteners makes me sick. Because of the sinusitis I do way too much mouth breathing which may be partly the cause but that doesn’t help because antihistamines both don’t work and make me sick. Sigh.

        {{{Diana}}} I hope whatever is causing you issues will go away soon. Healing Energy. Moar {{{HUGS}}}

  9. Good breezy Monday afternoon, Moosekind! It’s 37 F. in Ashburn right now, not going much higher. We received 2 inches of snow, which is melting because it’s so gloppy. Good! It all goes to the water table.

    I felt so ill yesterday after the group photo—the entire cast had a photo taken in front of one of the flats—that I couldn’t interview the woman I was supposed to interview. I tried to call her this morning, but had to leave a voicemail.

    Meanwhile, back at the ranch, I’ve taken another dose of Pepto-Bismol to stop the nausea. I can hardly eat. I also have some sort of nasty little nonproductive cough that I suspect is GERD, as well as headaches. Ugh! I have to turn in the diabetes article but, edit as I will, it persists in being 700+ words.

    Well, if they want to cut something out, they can. After it leaves my hands and goes to the Managing Editors, I basically disclaim all responsibility.

    In other news, I had to postpone my dinner date yesterday because I was too sick to eat. I’m not sure I’ll make it to rehearsal tonight: if I do, I’ll have to wear a mask and sit in the back.

    Well, enough of my first-world troubles. At least we didn’t get 15-20 inches of snow here! I’ll have some soup and a Tylenol and see what happens. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

  10. Good morning, meeses! Monday …

    It is 72 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 79. Sunny skies are in the forecasts.

    I am going to take my walk before it gets too hot and then watch some baseball on TV.

    See all y’all later!

  11. Good morning, 47 and raining in Bellingham. I haven’t been doing much because staying off my damn leg is all I can manage. And my quiet life is too boring for a daily report. It’s slowly improving but I’m struggling with the reality that it will prolly happen again. Oh well, I should be able to do a bit more today. Best wishes to all.

    • And my quiet life is too boring for a daily report.

      Uh—not so fast.

      Princesspat, I very much enjoy your descriptions of plans for your summer and winter patio, the bouquets for the house and for birthdays, and your sewing projects. It bespeaks creativity of a kind that is different from my own, but I have an imagination and in my mind’s eye I can picture all of it!

      I especially liked it when you said the window of your sewing room looked out to your garden.

  12. Good morning. I’m getting ready for wfh and planning to ignore tonight’s speech from mango mussolini. Have a great day.

  13. It’s 45 windchill 40 heading for 67 and overcast at the moment. Windy so it may or may not clear off later. Or of course get cloudier/darker. Yesterday we generated 14.04 KWHs and the m-t-d is 229.04 – with 5 more production days in February.

    The current temp is already slightly higher than yesterday’s high and already I’m coughing less. I’m also wearing a hat and scarf (around my shoulders, not my throat), which I normally don’t, so that could be making a difference too. But I think it’s more the warmer temps. I love my evening fires and the lack of bugs that cold weather gives me, but I really am looking forward to summer. Maybe the construction next door and all down the street will be finished by then (yeah, right!) and there won’t be quite so much construction dust and other crud in the air. But that is not now. Now is boosting folks in need of rent by Sunday. Holding the Good/Healing/Protection Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  14. Good Tuesday morning, Meese! Lawks, it’s past 10 a.m. and I’m still in my dressing-gown! Well, it’s true that reading my email gave me some work to do.

    It’s beautifully clear, sunny, and 30 F. in Ashburn. I’ll wait until some of the ice has melted off the roads before I go out this afternoon. Happy to report I had a half-decent sleep, ate a normal breakfast, and generally feel OK. Still too fragile to go to that balance class, though. Have some work to do after I get cleaned up.

    Robert Carradine died! Sniff! At first I didn’t realize who he was, then I read he played the lead role in “Revenge of the Nerds.” My GODDESS, that movie was funny! Made me laugh every time I watched it. I’m sorry he committed suicide. He probably had troubles we know nothing about.

    Bfitz says:

    I love my evening fires and the lack of bugs that cold weather gives me, but I really am looking forward to summer.

    Yes, couldn’t agree more. Well, it’s time to get cleaned up and get on with my day. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  15. Good morning, meeses! Tuesday …

    It is 73 degrees in Tucson with an expected high of 79. Sunny skies. We will see the upper 80s this weekend. I would prefer they just stop at 82 but I don’t make the rules! The half full moon was bright overhead when I saw her last night.

    I had my annual checkup, my blood pressure exhibited signs of stress because I was 2 minutes late due to traffic so I will be spending the next year convincing the doctor that I don’t have high blood pressure that warrants medication. Last week for an appointment with a different doctor it was a perfect 127 over 62.

    I have to decide if I will try to do anything useful or take it easy the rest of the day. Leaning towards taking it easy.

    See all y’all later!

  16. Good afternoon, 33 and sunny in Bellingham. I’ve rested half the day away so what should I do now? Thanks to procrastination I have lots of choices :) One thing I won’t be doing is watch the pervert’s speech tonight. I can’t listen to his creepy voice let alone see his disgusting face.
    My main work table in my sewing room was full of various projects and not put away Christmas so I cleaned that up yesterday and now I can sort out the many projects in waiting and decide what to do first. I’m grateful to have such choices, but not so happy with my slow progress. I like to keep at least three things going at once so I can vary the work depending on sitting, standing, easy, hard, etc. When I get to the actual sewing process it’s easy to focus on one thing and finish it. So that should keep me occupied while trying to ignore the awful reality that a convicted sex offender was elected potus. Best wishes to all.

    • That sounds like a great plan for pacing yourself!

      I also cannot stand the voice or countenance of the unfit garbage person that the haters elected to be their president. I can’t even watch local news because they insist on showing him on my TV! I read the paper where I can skip quickly over still photos that have no sound or motion.

  17. Early Wednesday Meese. Temp here in Kingston is 17 going up to 42.
