Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: March 29th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

    Donald Trump is not the first US president to have expansionist ambitions for Cuba. The US has a long history of trying to control the island — and of antagonistic relations with its government.

  3. I stayed too long at the No Kings thing yesterday. It was great, thousands of people — the news was not very specific about how many. But yay.

  4. It’s 52 heading for 78 and cloudy. It might clear off this afternoon. Maybe. Thank heavens I started keeping a spreadsheet on my PV generation data because the techbros are playing with the monitoring system again. Yesterday we generated 17.58 and the m-t-d at 330.06 is close enough to 360 that we might make it. We’ve got 3 production days left in March.

    I got 4 hours of sleep last night in 2 chunks so I’m slow and groggy this morning. My hands are stiff too but that’s normal when it’s chilly. Off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

    • Good Sunday morning, Moosekind! It’s 46 F. in Ashburn under partly cloudy skies, going up to 64 F. later.

      Our demonstration yesterday was a lot of fun. We 100-year-olds hobbled to the grass verge outside the gates with our canes, walkers, and rollators. I don’t use one of those yet (and hope I never do). We faced Gloucester Road, which was very busy yesterday morning and received LOTS of honks! The horrible freezing wind was blowing so strongly that a friend of mine had to put the toe of his boot on my shoe to keep me from being knocked over. He suggested that I put on a few pounds. Huh? Our resident activist, a one-time lawyer who dyes her hair purple in front, held up a sign that said, “Honk if you hate Trump/ICE/Maga. Oh hell, just honk!” A man held up a sign with a pic of Mango that said, “Does this ass make my country look small?” A woman in a wheelchair had a sign that said, “Now you’ve pissed off Grandma.”

      My sign was not very witty. It just had a picture of Rosie the Riveter with the caption, “Grantifa: Grandmas against fascism.” We had quite a decent turnout, more than 100 members of our senior community, give or take a couple of million. I was pleased to see a bunch of people from the Drama Club, including several from the play; the Progressives, of course; the UUs; and even two of my writers (men) and the husband of a third writer. Several of my writers are either caregivers or ailing themselves, so I was not surprised that only 3 of the 9 were present. We all went home after an hour, pleased with the loud honks, the wittiness of the signs, and the feeling of camaraderie. We’ll all be voting for our temporary redistricting on April 21.
      1.

      Today I’ve some computer chores to do, and I mean it about going to the gym to tire myself out. At 4 I’m meeting the fellow Thespian who is sharing the role of Narrator/Mysterious Man, then we’re going to rehearse the Mysterious Man role. One good thing about having our scripts as backup on stage is that we can begin to concentrate on the blocking and actual acting, as opposed to just looking down and reading our next line.

      OK, wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

    • Bfitz, many hugs and much sympathy! I’m having trouble sleeping as well, and it’s really causing a problem. I saw a thing on the telly that said this allergy season began earlier and will last longer than usual. Say whut? We are advised not to open our windows.

      Hope your problem will go away!

      • {{{Diana}}} A lot of it is sinusitis and “allergy season” starting sooner means so does the sinusitis flares. sigh. Healing Energy & hope you get better sleep yourself. Moar {{{HUGS}}}

  6. It’s 65 heading for 83 and sunny at the moment. Yesterday we generated 16.14 KWHs and with the m-t-d at 346.2 we have a very good chance of reaching 360 by the end the day. IF it stays sunny.

    Natalia’s poison ivy rash is flaring again. Not sure why. And may just be another irritant (like honeysuckle pollen) hitting the same place on her arm. Not weepy but red and itching. Spring & Summer – the itchy time of year. Better sleep last night. And it being warmer my feet are OK and my hands aren’t as stiff. Which is a good thing. Off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  7. Good Monday morning, Moosekind! It’s 52 F. in Ashburn under cloudy skies. We’ve had a little rain shower this morning. “They Say” the clouds will clear away and we’ll have 70 F. later. Tomorrow we’ll have 80 F.!

    Mango is busily ruining MY city of Washington, DC. I’ve always loved Memorial Bridge for how it flings itself, arch after graceful arch, across the Potomac. Now he’s going to ruin it by building an entirely undeserved gratuitous “Arc de Triomphe” on it as a monument to his ego. He’s caused the pavers of the Colonnade to be torn up because he wants concrete poured. We all know what he did to the Rose Garden. How I loathe him! April can’t come soon enough—well, Wednesday in fact.

    My new regime, no caffeine after 2 p.m. and 1 hour of exercise a day, is beginning to pay off. Soon I won’t need a sleeping pill–I hope. I’m using up the leftover Lorezepam since the trazodone has the same effect as sticking my tongue out the window. Must get going. See y’all later!

  8. Good morning, 37 and partly sunny outside my windows today. I think Bri will be here soon to prune the ivy fences so I’m going to stay quiet until she arrives. I’ll try to stay out of her way but be available when questions arise. My potting bench came from my friends flower shop so it is well used and needs repairs so I’ll empty it, sort the clay pots, remove the rotten boards, etc. My son has some old cedar boards to use for repairs so when it’s fixed it will still have it’s charm but will function again. It would be easier to just replace it but sentimental me doesn’t want something new. Best wishes to all.

  9. Good morning, meeses! Monday …

    It is 88 degrees in Tucson with an expected daytime high of 90. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast. We had haze most of the weekend but it appears to have burned off. Later this week temperatures, especially overnight lows, will drop. I took my walk and it was very comfortable.

    I had a non-productive weekend because I was simply tired and didn’t want to do much. I will pay the piper this week as queued up projects won’t do themselves and I am really behind. I might take one more day off then put my nose to the grindstone.

    My Wisconsin Women’s Basketball team plays in the WBIT semifinal game in about 40 minutes and then there are two NCAA Elite 8 games later today. So far the 1 seeds are all advancing, no Cinderellas this year.

    See all y’all later!

    • I was wrong, all the one seeds made it to the Final Four. It will be a good set of games – I think that any of the 4 teams could win under the right circumstances, there are both exploitable flaws and untapped energy for all of the teams.

      My Badgers came up short in the WBIT. They lost one of their best scorers to a knee injury just after half time and couldn’t recover from that. They had a nice run and the new coach will have something to build on with returning players, recruits and maybe some portal luck.

  11. Good morning. Just a quick check in, I had a lot of surveys this morning and it’s almost time for work. So — hi, have a good day.

  12. It’s 64 heading for 82, windy, sunny at the moment but those winds are blowing in clouds. Doubt we’ll get any rain out of it but it would be a good thing if we did. Yesterday we generated 16.48 KWHs and the m-t-d is 362.68 – so yay! we’re over 360 with today left to generate.

    The pollen is pretty bad here, the 1st mowing of the season (in March didn’t help, and then yesterday afternoon there was a fire somewhere to the west and north that added smoke to the mix. I’d hoped to open the house at bedtime but the smoke was still there. But it’s gone this morning and the house is open. For another hour or so. Then I’ll be closing it against the heat. On the last day in March. Sigh. Anyway, off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  13. Good morning, 37 and light clouds outside my windows today. Bri made good progress with our pruning plan and to my relief we made the right decisions and the garden will indeed be easier to care for. I got the potting bench emptied, pots sorted, the ivy around it clipped, etc. So it was a productive day outdoors. Bri will be back sometime this week to finish the ivy fences and Marcus will be here on Monday to prune the hedges and the trees so lots of work now but hopefully a garden we can just be in this summer. Best wishes to all.

    • You are so ambitious! I am glad other people are caring for the landscape here – even in a place that is bone dry, everything keeps growing. The cactus blooms are beautiful this year.

  14. Good afternoon, meeses! Tuesday …

    It is 84 degrees after a little rain shower cooled things down from 92. I don’t think the rain is done. Last night the nearly full moon was high in the hazy sky.

    I finished one project and bought some time on another one so I can sit and take it easy for the rest of the month, all 9.5 hours of it. :)

    See all y’all later!

  15. Wednesday Meese. Going to be 60 here in Kingston today with rain

  16. Good morning. Excited for the Artemis launch (maybe) today. I’ll have the NASA app open most of the day. That’s definitely something I can have on between calls, glad the launch is on a wfh day.

  17. It’s 68 heading for 80, overcast and muggy. Yesterday we generated 14.10 KWHs and wrapped up March with 376.78 – not the best by any means but we didn’t set a new low for the 4K system either. April’s to-date lowest is 335 and highest is 476 – so the at least goal is 336, the “miracle” goal is 477, and the target is 450. We are not starting well on that but we shall see what we shall see.

    Muggy weather always messes with my joints and lower back. Oh well. We might but probably won’t get rain. Putting off laundry until Saturday when it’s supposed to be in the 50s – with rain – and I’ll have a fire going to dry clothes by. Gotta get milk some time today. Meanwhile, I’d best be about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}
