Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: March 29th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good Wednesday morning, Moosekind, today is the day of the Pink Full Moon! For the last two nights, coming out of rehearsal I’ve seen her silvery self riding high and I’m glad. They’re forecasting rain this evening. She actually looked quite full both nights.

The pink trees are nearly over but you should see the purple ones flaunting themselves along the roadside banks! I’ve lived in the DC area 71 years now and I’m still intoxicated by the springs and autumns. Right now it’s 77 F., a deliriously warm lovely day, going up to 87 F. I wore shorts to go to the gym to row and will wear them to get my nails done.

Our director is truly disgusted with us. I hope I don’t do anything to cause her to give me That Look.

Yesterday I attended a balance class before rushing off to get my hair done. Today after nails I need to stop by Trader Joe’s. This new routine of mine is beginning to pay off, as I mentioned the other day. Half an hour more today on the treadmill and I’ll have my hour of hard exercise.

Mango is still ruining our country. Now he wants to withdraw from NATO? Goddess give me strength. Got to get doing. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  2. Good afternoon, 50 and cloudy outside my windows today. I knew the pruning plan would be messier than I like and it is, but it will get better. One ivy fence needed to be cut with an electric hedge trimmer so it looks rough, but it’s now a better height and width and with some hand clipping the cut edges will blend in. Unfortunately for me my knees are not miserable so I can’t do what I want to do so I’m a bit frustrated. But I was able to replace the chair and ottoman with a barely used recliner so I’ve got a better place to rest and recover. I have hesitated re getting a recliner but m hairdresser had this one so it was easy….no shopping, the price was right, my son and his friend delivered it, and it fits both me and the space it sits in. Now I need to sell or donate the chair and ottoman I was using and then I’m officially in the recliner stage of life. Best wishes to all.

    • I would like a recliner but I am not sure where it would fit. I am stuck with a chair and ottoman arrangement but it is not the most comfortable.

      • This one is made to fit close to the wall so it needs less room to recline. The back support is so much better and adding a wedge pillow elevates my legs a bit more. I have been very reluctant to do this…..why I do not know…..but so far it’s really nice to have some comfort and pain relief. Shopping for recliners is a pita because most are made for people larger than I am so I was very pleased they did the shopping and found a smaller chair.

        • I think I remember that from the last time I went recliner shopping – they all seem made for football offensive linemen! I am not very tall and I want to be able to sit back in the chair with my feet touching the floor. I am glad you found something! Maybe there is hope for me.

  3. Good afternoon, meeses! Wednesday …

It never got above 80 here and was quite pleasant after a front moved through last night and brought rain. The nearly full moon was high on the SE sky, she will be full tonight at 7:11pm MST.

My “things I must do in March” did not all get done but I did 3 of 4 planned April 1st things so it feels like a successful day.

    See all y’all later!

    Hurricane Melissa

The Green Climate Fund, with support from the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the UN, has given Jamaican small farmers affected by and vulnerable to the impacts of climate change a tremendous boost with a US$50 million funded project, ADAPT Jamaica. After Hurricane Melissa, this is so welcome.

  5. Good morning. The launch was awesome. Found several threads with NASA people, talking to them was really neat. I’m in the office, today is my Friday. I took tomorrow off because the idea of coming home after church and doing all the stuff to get ready to come back to the office tomorrow didn’t seem very contemplative.

  6. It’s 67, very overcast, lots of wind with a little water carried on the breezes to splat here and there. Yesterday we generated 12.17 KWHs so the m-t-d is starting the month behind/off track. And going to get a lot further behind over the next 3 days.

    Whatever gunk in the air is messing with my eyes, making it hard to focus. But bless the warmth – my hands don’t ache. Not going to be cool enough to have a fire and do laundry today. IF the forecast is correct Saturday will be perfect for that. And if the forecast changes & I can’t have a fire, I still have to do laundry – that’s my last “clean underwear” day – and just take it to the laundromat to dry. Not exactly a “1st world problem” but not exactly not either. Meanwhile I’d best be about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  7. Good Thursday morning, Meese. It’s a gray and gloomy morning in Ashburn, 57 F. and I think we might get some showers. That’s OK.

I am becoming obsessed with avoiding diabetes and beginning to feel guilty about serving sweet treats to my writers. Wonder if there are any non-sugary treats I can serve them, will have to DuckDuckGo it. At 11 I’ll go to the gym for my 1 hour of exercise and then eat a large lunch. The restaurant next the gym is serving Three Sisters stew.

Every time I think I’m over this cough or sinus drainage or whateverinell it is, it comes back, right in the middle of rehearsal. Damn! If I were ever off stage (I’m not) I could drink water or have a squirt of throat spray, or something but there it is, I’m on for the whole 70 minutes. Le sigh.

So excited about the launch and the astronauts! I have never seen a more moving, humbling photograph than that of our beautiful blue and white earth, rising slowly over the horizon of the moon. Reminds me how small and insignificant we really are, and why can’t we abolish religion and all get along? But that won’t happen in my lifetime.

Need to get on with my day. Wishing a good day to everyone at the Pond—pray for an end to the wars.

  8. Good morning, meeses! Thursday ….

It is 85 degrees and sunny. It was 77 during my walk which is perfect weather. I saw the full moon high in the sky last night framed by a few random clouds. She seems particularly bright this month, seeming very full for multiple days in a row.

I am going news light these days. There is nothing good happening and to root against the seeping orange pustule seems to be rooting for high gas prices, high food prices and a return of double digit inflation. Yes, he is a hateful piece of garbage but his failing hurts us all and won’t hasten his departure because his cult members will never turn on him and rein him in.

I am taking the rest of the day off after working for a while early this morning. Yesterday was too busy.

    See all y’all later!

  9. Good morning, 50 and cloudy in Bellingham today. I didn’t watch the orange mess flounder about last night but reading around this morning has me feeling both sad and mad. So I’m grateful to have ivy to clip. I can’t do as much as I want to do but I can do some around the back steps where I can stand on level ground and sit when I need to. Best wishes to all.

  10. Friday Meese 39 here in Kingston going up to 65.

  11. Good morning. I took today off, actually slept in. Plan for the day is exercise, cooking, church. There’s new U2 music, should have expected it since the last EP was released on Ash Wednesday. Have a good day, everyone!

  12. It’s 69 heading for 79 and overcast. Yesterday we generated 13.12 KWHs and the m-t-d at 25.29 lost more ground.

    We’re supposed to get some actual rain starting around midnight, which we most certainly need, and the temps will drop to 51 by dawn. It’ll be a good day for both baking and laundry. I guess from a Euro-Xtian standpoint the weather is right for the liturical season. Since the Euro-white attitudes about clouds & rain is that they’re bad/negative, historically having had enough of both to get tired of them. (Something that’s changing with Climate Collapse but that change hasn’t made a difference in the language.) Anyway, off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  13. Good Friday morning—literally, Good Friday morning—Moosekind. ‘Tis so gray and misty that a fog warning has been issued. However, the purple trees are still cheering up the trees wrapped in green mist. I love the woods any time of year, but especially now. It’s 49 F. in Ashburn, promising to go up to 83 F. today. Tomorrow it will be hot! I might wear a summer dress to dinner tomorrow night.

My daughter is not, after all, coming to see me in the play. There’s just too much going on in Massachusetts. Would that be a good title for a play? We had a good rehearsal last night, although my voice failed in the middle. Wish I knew some way to take care of the situation. I can go all day without coughing, needing to wipe my nose, et cetera, but right at 8 p.m., when we’re half through rehearsal, the whole thing starts up. The nuisance of being old!

Well, I’m not sure which is working, the no-caffeine-after 12 noon, or the 1 hour of exercise a day, or the forbidden sleeping pill, but something is. I am so glad.

Still excited about the astronauts, but still waking every morning feeling like Henry II: Will no one rid us of this turbulent president? Not that I’m asking for assassins, mind you: if one too many McDonald’s “hamberders” carries him off, that would be fine.

Wishing a good day to all the Pond.

  14. Good morning, 51 and partly cloudy. Thanks to my new recliner I’m napping well…..and in comfort :) I’ll do a bit more ivy clipping today and then I need to do a few Easter errands. So glad we’re keeping it simple this year. Best wishes to all.

  15. Good afternoon, meeses! Friday …

It is 81 and sunny, it had been hotter earlier when I took my walk but it was still comfortable. Most of my clients were off today so I was able to get started on a big project that will likely take all weekend to finish.

I just watched the WNBA expansion draft and was pleased to find that one of my favorite Mercury players, Lexi Held, who had been treated poorly by the coach will end up playing on the Toronto Tempo under the former coach of the Liberty. Good for her! It is hard to believe that the season is starting after all the contract contentiousness and drama surrounding the sale of the Sun. Time to play ball!

Women’s College Basketball Final Four starts in about an hour. I am ready.

    See all y’all later!

  16. Saturday Meese. No rain today and temp will be 52. I’m celebrating my wbb team winning last evening. Yay Gamecocks!

  17. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

It is 57 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 84. Partly cloudy skies are in the forecast. The moon is beaming down on me from high in the SE sky this morning. The weather widget says winds are 2.5 mph but when I opened the door to stand outside and look at the early morning dark sky, I was almost blown over! As far as I know, there are no fronts moving in – just winds from the mountains.

I watched the South Carolina v UConn game and half of the UCLA v Texas game last night. Low scoring games with lots of defense and, in the SC UConn game, drama. I wonder if Geno wants to retire and hoped to notch one more championship before he called it quits? His game ending meltdown was embarrassing to watch. His team lost because they were too short and missed their shots and, because of the cupcake Big East schedule, rarely had to face a ferocious smothering defense. He owns at least two of those things and to act like a big baby who had to be restrained from what, punching Dawn Staley?, was ugly. Today there will be some softball and baseball to cleanse my sports watching eyes.

I have a quiet morning in which to get many things done that had to be set aside by eyes forward projects this past week. I am going to work on personal accounting and desktop organizing and put together a to-do list for tomorrow.

    See all y’all later!

  18. Good morning. We’re supposed to get rain today, yay! Going to kickboxing, then just housework. I got most of my cooking done for next week, but my stirfry turned out dry so my grocery order includes some sauce ingredients.

  19. Good Saturday morning, Meese! The whole of long, lovely Saturday stretches before me. Don’t have to hurry up and do anything.

It’s already 69 F. in Ashburger, supposedly going up to 87 F., but we have overcast skies at the moment. Day-yum. I wanted to wear shorts and run out to check the lilacs. They should be blooming about now. Am very excited about the Artemis II mission and the photos they’re sending back of our beautiful Earth.

My neighbor’s dog, who specializes in bestowing holiday sweets, left a small box of my favorite chocolates on my shelf this morning. She has good taste: it was a box of See’s assorted. The leader of the biography book club sent me a beautiful Easter-themed Easter ecard. That reminds me, for reasons best known to itself, Resident Life is hatching a clutch of eggs in the Blue Ridge club house across the way. Two baby chicks have already emerged, one yellowish and the other a very dark brown. The shells were brown. I must say, it quite puts one off breakfast.

Oh, the chores I have waiting. Well, time to get on with things now that breakfast has been had. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  20. It’s 51 heading for 59, very overcast but the rain is tapering off. Probably going to stay overcast even after it does. Yesterday we generated 6.97 KWHs and the m-t-d at 32.26 lost more ground. (On track would be 45 at this point.)

We got some very needed rain starting around 1 am – won’t quite make 2″ but enough that there’s a flood warning out. We’re OK on my block even though both ends of it are in the floodplain but there are some much lower lying areas of Fayetteville that might have had some flooding. More like flashflood and move through fast even though the warning is not for flash floods. We’ve been too short of rain for too long for any serious flooding.

I tried a new recipe and baked lemon bread – more like cake (not really cake but more butter and sugar than in my usual recipe) – this morning and it just came out of the oven. The house smells divine. It’s mostly oat flour with a little sorghum flour and I don’t know how well it’s going to hold together. Whether I’ll get cake squares or piles of delicious cake crumbs. We shall see.

    I kept the house closed up overnight and with the baking this morning the kitchen and den are at a comfortable 75. How long that lasts I won’t know until it cools down but I am very sure it’ll be cool enough for me to light the fire and do laundry today. Meanwhile, I’d best be about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}
