Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: January 25th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

    Morning low of 45 degrees in the Desert Southwest 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 55. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

    Have a great day, all y’alls!!

  2. Good snowy Sunday morning, Moosekind! Woke up early to find that something did actually come down during the night. It’s still coming down, although it looks more like sleet than snow, and the accumulation looks like barely 4 inches. It’s 13 F. in Ashburn right now, and who cares wheat the high will be today? Ain’t goin’ out.

    Yesterday I started feeling as if I’m getting a cold, despite wearing a cloth mask (admittedly, less efficient than a K95 but much more comfortable). I’ve been letting my social life dominate, but am determined to stay home (mostly) today. After lunch at the deli, my friend and I were going to see “The Pelican Brief,” but there was no heat in the auditorium, and we hadn’t thought to bring blankets! Disgusted, we left before the movie even started. I spent the afternoon sleeping.

    M’Daughter and her husband and Chihuahuas reached home safely. I had to be a bit stern with the persistent suitor. I really don’t appreciate being texted five times a day, each text a long screed! This is the first time in 61 years I’ve lived by myself and I’m rather enjoying it. Of course I miss Dearly, but I don’t have to arrange my schedule around a husband’s needs now.

    Have a lot to do as usual, since the first read-through of “Into the Woods” will be tomorrow night. Also need to pack. I don’t think we’ll be able to fly on Tuesday.

    Am still heartsick over what’s happening in Minnesota and the killers in masks. I call them the Gestapo. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

    • They are the Gestapo. The tyranny of a Democratic administration was insisting on getting health care to everyone – for that we are punished by having murderous masked thugs with badges overrun our cities. It must be difficult being a police officer in Minneapolis, unable to protect those they are sworn to help.

  3. Sunday Meese. 20 and snowing here.

  4. Good morning. It’s in the 20s & we had ice & sleet fall last night. Church is virtual today; as was the candidate forum yesterday. I think it went well, and I’ve seen a recap of the senate debate that I think went well. People can point out their strengths without being ugly about their opponent. Local news is all about the weather — shots of ice-covered streets & “please don’t go out”.

  5. It’s 7 wind chill -10 heading for 18 wind chill 7. Also overcast and we’re supposed to get more snow. Not much more snow but still snow. The snow part of this is supposed to be done by noon. The widget measures all precipitation as if it were rain so it’s showing .6″ accumulated total. I’m not sure how to translate that to snow but I think it’s about 9″. The wind apparently uncovered a single PV panel cell yesterday because the data center’s showing 5 watts of generation. But we had rain in between snows and the wind isn’t going to blow any of this lot off. The m-t-d is at 155.52 and unless this melts faster than I think it’s going to, that’ll be it for January.

    I’ve put out cat food and birdseed this morning and will probably do it again at least once and probably twice today. Other than that, I’m staying indoors. I’m not warm but I’m safe. I’ll light the fire around 2 pm and make soup for dinner. And hope Natalia will be able to get home this evening. Meanwhile, I’d best be about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  6. Good morning, 28 and sunny in Bellingham today. Thanks to Lisa’s help yesterday we have the furniture in the storage locker ready to move along. Now that I have photos I can see if the local consignment store will take the pieces and if not, I’ll find a way to donate them. Then we can sort the boxes and make the next decisions. It feels good to be making some progress and by doing it together it’s easier for all of us.
    We paid attention to the awful news of the day while trying to do what our daily life requires…..seems like that’s the best way to cope for now. I wish I could do more than call our congressional offices.
    Today’s task is to finally get the rest of Christmas put away. Best wishes to all.

  7. My office is closed tomorrow!!! I could dance! I thought for a second that was silly, then I started to go check the mail. No. Nope. There’s ice/sleet piled on the sidewalk, and, well just everywhere. I’m not walking across the parking lot, so yeah, I’m ok with no work.

  8. Good morning. The news is full of people playing in the ice — sledding & skating. Crazy for here. My office is closed, but I have to use vacation hours because I could work since I’m set up for remote work. I didn’t bring any applications home on Friday, so I don’t know what work they’d want me to do….. Anyway, I’m staying inside.

  9. It’s 3F wind chill -5F heading for 26 wind chill 16 and sunny. Didn’t get any generation yesterday and I seriously doubt we’ll get any today. I don’t know how many inches of snow are on the solar panels but on the ground it was/is deeper than a dachshund’s legs (my neighbor’s was out romping in the snow yesterday after it stopped snowing) and he wasn’t walking through the snow, he was lunging through it. So it’s going to take several days for that snow to melt off. Especially since we aren’t predicted to get above freezing even in the daytime until tomorrow. So 155.5 KWHs may be it for January.

    Natalia’s snowed in at the farm. She’s got food and firewood and can work from home so that part’s OK. The house is fairly close to the road and the road itself is a very secondary state highway. So once it’s plowed she can get out, when it’ll be plowed is the issue. I got a call from my younger son. He’s not actually in Austin but in a bedroom community north of Austin. He and his family are fine. Have food & power. And he’s able to work from home. School’s are closed so the boys will be home. And that’s good because he says it looks like snow but slides like ice. He said he’s too old to run out and play in it just because it’s so rare. LOL.

    Rough night with the sinusitis and slow moving with stiff achy hands so I’m running a bit behind my time. Off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  10. Good morning, 32 and cloudy outside my windows. My list is long but my focus is gone and my energy is low so I’m going to be careful today. Best wishes to all.

    • Congratulations to your Seahawks getting into the Super Bowl. The quarterback, Sam Darnold, has a compelling story – high draft pick, no success, eventually kicked to the curb. Found a QB camp that helped him, had great success last year but was cut and is going to the Super Bowl this year.

  11. Good afternoon, meeses! Monday …

    It is 59 degrees and sort of sunny, a bit of a breeze from the north is keeping us cool.

    I got a message on BlueSky yesterday that Dee can’t log in. I ran the maintenance items that usually clear up login issues and from the looks of today’s check-ins, it didn’t help. :(

    I will try one more thing and then I may open a support ticket. It is annoying and happens more often than it should, we can’t possibly be stressing the technology with a half dozen logins a day.

    Busy day – glad to not have time to check the news.

    See all y’all tomorrow!

  12. It’s currently zero degrees here in Kingston, NY going up to 18 and looks like we’ll get more snow. Still trying to deal with my Twitter account which has been hacked – currently @Deoliver47 is not me. My husband is trying to let people know via his account – @nadhiyr

  13. Good morning. My agency is opening late today but people with remote days are expected to work regular hours so I have to drive in at 7 to get applications. Spent 2 hours yesterday digging the ice off the sidewalk so I could leave my apartment — me, then a neighbor with a shovel and then another neighbor. Shovels, brooms, hot water….whew. We had another hard freeze overnight, so getting out there now will be unpleasant, but at least I can get to my car.

  14. It’s 21 wind chill 11 heading for 38 wind chill 30 and supposed to be sunny this morning. Clouds are predicted to move in late this afternoon. 0 production for the last 3 days and probably 0 production for today. Even sunny and several hours above freezing are not likely to melt off the snow. So we’re still at 155.5 for the m-t-d.

    There were warnings out for stretches of the roads between Fayetteville and Berryville so Natalia stayed put yesterday. University was on working from home so that part’s OK. She’ll be home sometime today. She’s aiming for midafternoon. I did laundry yesterday afternoon so she can do hers today. The fire will be going anyway. Not much to say about the wider world. Things are horrible. I’ve watched them progress from covertly fascist to overtly fascist and nothing I did even slowed things down. So I’ll do what I can that maybe makes some difference – boosting folks needs. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  15. Good afternoon, meeses! Tuesday …

    It is 62 degrees and sunny. The sun is warm but the shade is a bit cool.

    Another very busy day that took me hither and yon. I got a few things off my personal to-do list but I have to dig back into work stuff again tomorrow.

    See all y’all tomorrow!

  16. Good morning Meese. 17 degrees here and more snow on the way

  17. Good morning. Most of the ice is gone, we still have freezes overnight but people can get out & about, Even so, I’m glad I have wfh today.

  18. It’s 16 heading for 44 and sunny at the moment. Solar panels still completely covered so no production yesterday. Possibly enough will melt off today that we’ll get something – but I’m not going to bet on it. 155.5 is still the m-t-d.

    Natalia’s safely home. University is still on remote – too much ice on the streets and especially the sidewalks on campus – but will probably be back to the normal schedule tomorrow. Meanwhile she can work in her pjs and do laundry on her breaks today.

    I’m dealing with sinusitis and skin so dry it itches. And stiff hands, of course. But otherwise I’m fine. Off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}
