Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: February 8th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good morning. So this is weird: All flights in and out of El Paso are grounded for 10 days. All. Flights. Commercial and private, not even medical flights — and they showed the statement issued to pilots pretty much saying they will shoot them down for violating it. I don’t know what kind of dystopian crap President Steven Miller is planning there but wow this is going to be bad. As one guy said — are they also setting up checkpoints for people driving in? They’re within the limit where CBP can just ask for your ID, so that wouldn’t even require an announcement. What the hell is going on? So, with that happy statement, I have to get ready for work. Ugh.

  2. It’s 38 heading for 62 and sunny at the moment. PV monitor still not accessible. If they don’t fix it soon I’m not sure what I’ll do. Probably start an excel spreadsheet and track it myself. But that means going out to the inverter once a day – no matter what the weather – to get the data. And possibly mining old Moose posts for comparative data since I posted it here. Anyway, yesterday we generated 8.5 KWHs and the m-t-d at 86.6 is still on track.

    Natalia’s work situation is getting more stressful. I’m not sure she’s going to make it through to full Social Security retirement age. Heck, I’m not entirely sure she’ll make it through the end of this fiscal year. But she’s several years beyond the point where she can take full University retirement (that’s an age + years of service calculation). I will certainly miss her whenever she takes retirement. If she’s not working in town she has no need of a place to live in town. She can live at the farm. But her physical and mental health are more important.

    Meanwhile, I need to be about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  3. Good Wednesday morning, Moosekind! When I got out of bed just before 7, it was RAINING! If y’all knew how rare that is in Ashburned, you would not be surprised that I am hysterical. And it kept on raining! Then it stopped before 8. We have a current temperature above freezing, which will help melt the snowcrete. Yay!

    Today will be my usual busy day: have an appointment with the foot doctor at noon. Must finish that diabetes article, listen to singing lessons on YouTube, and memorize the first part of the play. Yesterday I received an “OK” from the costumers on my outfit. I’m wearing a black jacket, black slacks, black shoes, and a blue shirt as the Narrator. As the Mysterious Man I’ll add a black hat.

    Hope RonK enjoyed a happy birthday dinner! Y’all have convinced me to change my mind about Gavin. Also, I am furious that Big Pharma is colluding to raise the price of insulin. Doing this article on diabetes has made me realize what they have to contend with. The guy who discovered or invented artificial insulin didn’t want anyone to pay more than $15 for it.

    Tonight I have agreed to meet the other guy who’s doing the same roles so we can practice. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  4. Good morning, 38 and light clouds outside my windows today. Ron and I “gifted” each other a bit of spring yesterday…..a potted bulb garden for him and an assortment of forest moss for me. We can see the bulbs from the kitchen window so the patio looks inviting. And I want to use the moss in combination with rocks, logs and ferns to make a “forest floor” planting under the hemlock tree where nothing else will grow.
    Our sons joined us for a birthday dinner at a waterfront restaurant last night, so it was a nice 84th birthday for Ron. Best wishes to all.

      .

      That sounds so beautiful, princesspat!

  5. Good afternoon, meeses! Wednesday …

    It is 73 and has been sunny most of the day but started clouding up a bit. Tomorrow there is a slight chance for rain and Friday there is a much bigger chance. I am hoping it waits until Friday as I have something I need to do tomorrow that rain would not be welcome at.

    See all y’all tomorrow!

  6. Good morning. So the El Paso airspace thing was called off yesterday, with 3 or 4 different explanations given. Something about CBP, lasers and drones. Still: they thought they could just cut off a city, with no notice or explanation. It was at least partially a test. Anyway, hi. I’m in the office, walked 1.4 mi. Barely cool enough for a 2nd layer.

  7. It’s 33 heading for 65 and sunny at the moment. Data monitoring system still not working. Yesterday we generated 7.2 KWHs but the m-t-d at 94.5 is still on track.

    There is something gawdawful in the air and I’m coughing like crazy. Sigh. Natalia’s car is in the shop so I need to take her to work in a few minutes. I’ll get started with my boosting when I get back. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  8. Good Thursday morning, Meese! It’s 32 F. and cloudy today in Ashburn, going up to the 40s later. Saw some patches of bare ground yesterday. The snowcrete is retreating, yay!

    Today I have my writers’ group at 1:30. This morning I have to roll out, bake, and decorate the sugar cookies and at 12:30 or thereabouts, trot next door to pick up the dozen roses I ordered. Busy, busy day!

    Also, Nora is coming for dinner tonight so that’ll be good! Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

  9. Good morning, 38 and light clouds outside my windows today. This round of leg pain is upsetting and making me grouchy. Wearing the leg brace allows me to walk but it’s bulky and uncomfortable so it’s contributing to my poor me attitude. Oh well, I do know how to cope, just need to start doing so. Best wishes to all.

  10. Friday Meese. It’s currently 16 here in Kingston going up to 32.

  11. Good morning. I gave up on sleep at 3:45. So I got here early and did 1.45 mi. Still, not thrilled with the lack of sleep. Must hold on to consciousness until 5.

  12. It’s 39 heading for 73 today and sunny at the moment anyway. Monitoring system still borked. I’ve started an Excel document with 1 spreadsheet for daily production with a 2nd for cumulative data. I will probably keep it up even if the monitoring system starts working again. Just in case. (I may go back and mine the historic cumulative data if it does ever come back.) Anyway, yesterday we generated 10.9 KWHs and the m-t-d at 105.4 is still on track.

    Hopefully today will be a relatively quiet and more-or-less normal (as normal as anything is any more) day. Off to start my boosting. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  13. Good Friday morning, Moosekind! It’s 26 F. and sunny here in Ashburn this morning. Tomorrow is going to be quite warm, just right for the new dress I bought for the Valentine’s Day dinner tomorrow.

    Mango has rolled back all the EPA protections, so we’ll have dirty air, dirty water, dirty everything. Why doesn’t someone roll HIM back?

    I must get ready to go to the Valentine’s brunch at 11. The heart-shaped sugar cookies I made for my writers yesterday were a huge success, and one guy even asked which cookie mix I had used. I told him no cookie mix, just the Fannie Farmer Boston Cooking School Cookbook, and sent him the recipe. Our next meeting will be March 12, and it’ll still be cold. I’m going to make gingerbread and serve it with lemon curd. I served lemon curd once before and, believe it or not, there were people who had never heard of it!

    Darling Nora came over last night and wiped my old Mac clean. She couldn’t do a thing with the two prehistoric iPads, which wouldn’t even take a charge. She advised me to take them to an Apple Store, which I’ll do when I can’t think of a single other thing to do with my time.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond. I am afraid poor Nancy Guthrie will not be found alive.

    • The Guthrie story is big news here. That they are scouring the desert for clues is a bad sign. The desert is so vast and so lightly populated, people’s remains are often never found. It feels better (but still terrible) that it may be a burglary gone awry rather than a targeted abduction of the relative of a famous person.

  14. Good afternoon, meeses! Friday …

    It is 59 and raining, a good day to sleep in – so I did! Then of course delayed work was stacked up from being offline yesterday.

    See all y’all tomorrow!

  15. Good afternoon, 49 and raining in Bellingham. My annoying leg is less painful today so I’m going to a garden shop this afternoon. Our son is hosting a family birthday dinner on Sunday so I want to have a valentine for everyone….primroses for the big kids, a flower arrangement each for the grandkids. I know I don’t need to do this, but it’s fun to create a valentine treat for them. Just have to keep it really simple this year. Best wishes to all.

  16. It’s 58 heading for 61 and very overcast. Widget says it’s raining but it’s not. Was supposed to have started just after dark last night. There’s no evidence of any rain yet. It’s supposed to rain all day. It probably won’t. But I’m not putting my mail out – just in case. PV monitoring is still borked. Yesterday we generated 9.7 and the m-t-d at 115.2 is still on track. We’ll see if we get anything today.

    I’m very creaky this morning and moving very slowly. And whatever’s in the air that’s been messing with my sinuses is still there. Sigh. Oh well. I’m going to bake cookies today. Later. Meanwhile I need to be about my boosting. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  17. Good morning. Home from kickboxing, now for housework. Early voting starts Tuesday, I’m going to be in line at 6:30 so I can be among the first to vote. I’m not doing any GOTV stuff, but I did post voting locations on an internal bulletin board at work, and I’m talking to my neighbors.

  18. Good morning, 45 and sunny outside my windows today. I should have waited to do my errands because I got soaked with cold rain yesterday. I asked our son to cut me a few camellia stems and he arrived with a blooming branch so I’ve got a creative challenge waiting for me in the garage. Happy Valentines Day!
