Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: March 22nd

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

    Morning low of 66 degrees in the Desert Southwest 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 95. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

    Have a great day, all y’alls!!

  2. Sunday Meese. It’s going to be a rainy day here in Kingston but at least the temp is going up to 60. I’ll spend most of the day watching women’s college basketball March Madness.

    • There were a lot of good basketball games and a good sports day for me.

      My Badger Women’s Hockey team won the National Championship and my Badger Women’s Basketball team advanced to the quarterfinals in the WBIT and will host a game in Madison on Thursday.

  3. Good morning. Got a lot of comments in my music diary last night, lots of fun talk about music & musicians. I’ve got my tea steeping and all I have to do this afternoon is put breakfast for next week in containers. I’m wavering between definitely going to the No Kings protest next week (added sunscreen to my grocery order yesterday because mine is all over a year old and it loses protection capacity over time) and not going because my feet will hate it. And there is a virtual option. I have a cane — not that it would help all that much because both of my feet hate things like that — but I’m going to practice walking with it.

  4. Depending on which widget I look at it’s either 69 or 71 heading for 89 and sunny. Yesterday we generated 15.56 – same as the day before – and the m-t-d at 233.96 gained a smidge more. We’re still not on track for 360.

    I’ve got windows open and ceiling fans on at the moment and will for probably the next half hour or so. Cool front moving in overnight. Tomorrow’s high will be what this morning’s low was. It’s a rollercoaster. A couple of days cool-ish, a couple of days in the upper 80s, a couple more days cool-ish. Springtime. Earlier than it “should” be, but Springtime. Meanwhile I’d best be about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  5. Good Sunday morning, Moosekind! It’s 64 F. right now in Ashburn, going up to 80! Isn’t that great-y? I’ll take it. However, we’ll get Bfitz’ weather up here tomorrow, so back to jackets, long sleeves, and jeans.

    Last night after we had dinner, my friend and I saw “Piece for Chocolate,” a really fine movie about a Syrian family who emigrates to Canada and starts a chocolate factory. Magnificent acting but oh, my, if THAT’S what Canada looks like in the winter, I’ll stay home. Too much snow!

    Meanwhile, back at the ranch, the trees are bursting ecstatically into deep pink bloom, and there’s a green mist beginning in the woods. I’ve been at the keyboard ever since breakfast. I really must get washed and brushed because I need to do a couple of things. I feel quite happy this morning but I’m not sure whether it’s because of this shiny day or the sleeping pill my doctor prescribed instead of Ativan. When I read about the side effects of Trazodone (wanting to kill people, thoughts of suicide, etc.,) I almost screamed. Going to email her and tell her I’m not taking it any more. I’m not depressed, I’m happy—well, as happy as a person can be, considering that I am now a widow. I might have to train myself to fall asleep without artificial means. Dread the thought, though.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  6. Good morning, 44 and cloudy in Bellingham today. To my relief there were some results from the patch tests so now I need to learn how to use the computer program where the data is entered to screen the medications, cleaning, and personal care products I use. I think it will also help me find “safe” products as well. New fangled medical care!
    I’m going to a concert tonight but I bought the last ticket so my son will drop me off and Ron will pick me up so I won’t have parking hassles. I could have purchased tickets last fall but the price was more than I wanted to pay. So now the price was better but I’m on my own. Oh well, I love the music so I should have fun.
    I’m also shopping around for a recliner to replace the chair, ottoman and wedge pillow I have been using on the main floor. I have to elevate my legs due to the blood clot damage but something has changed with the arthritis in my spine so I’ve got to find a better way to do so. Between the walker and recliner it looks like an old lady lives here :) Best wishes to all.

    • I am determined to not care if I have to accommodate my aging by having things that make it easier to move around. I was talking to someone recently about a way to get into the pool that feels safer and I really don’t care it it looks silly!

      I am glad you have some new information to work with on your allergies!

  7. Monday Meese. 39 here in Kingston with rain in the forecast.

  8. Good morning. Did my 45 minute walk. In the office, trying to stay awake.

  9. It’s 44 heading for 66 and sunny at the moment. Yesterday we generated 15.41 KWHs and the m-t-d at 249.36, while still not on track to produce more than the lowest 4K system production to date, is now ahead of what the original 2.5K system did. So that’s good.

    I devoutly hope that warmer sooner doesn’t mean so much warmer that the A/C comes on sooner. At least with these cooling down spells in between the warmer spells there won’t be A/C in March. Thank heavens. We’ll see if we can make it through April. (Do I remember “normal” when the A/C might not be turned on until the 1st of July and definitely wouldn’t be turned on until the last week in June? Yes, I do.) Climate collapse. Combine that with corporations handing over both power & water to AI data centers/taking those increasingly limited resources away from human beings. . . there will be rioting in the streets if that’s not stopped ASAP. We shall see what we shall see. Meanwhile I’d best be about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

    • The too hot weather in the mountains states means the Colorado River will dry up sooner. And still people are building new homes, setting up thirsty data centers and growing crops better suited for rainy areas. Stupid and short-sighted. Why are Republicans called conservative – there is nothing in their policies that suggest any interest in conserving a thing. They should be called consumertives or depletionists.

      • Short-sighted greed is the hallmark of Colonizer Culture, of which capitalism is a subset. Genocide for fun and profit is another.

  10. Good bordig, Boosekide. With these allergies, by dose is ruddig and I keep having to resord to the Kleedex.

    It’s 57 F. in Ashburn right now, heading for 59 F. Our temperatures will fall throughout the day. Yesterday the high was 83 F. but it was so windy I couldn’t enjoy it. It’ll be windy this afternoon, too.:::insert swear words::: ‘Nuff said.

    Had the night from hell again. Took the bedtime meds at 10:30 p.m., but at 2:30 a.m. I was still wide awake, wondering whyinell they hadn’t worked. The new iPhone is supposed to be here by noon. Unfortunately, my phone number will change.

    Will be studying the script this morning. If the phone actually is delivered by noon, I’ll take my new wig to the barber shop and have my stylist trim it to fit. I bought it because the part I play in the musical is a male role. No one recognized me the first time I wore it! We’ll be rehearsing the music tonight. Next week the rehearsal schedule will change from three nights a week to five nights a week.

    This new sleeping pill, Trazodone, clearly doesn’t work. I’m supposed to notify my doctor if I have thoughts of suicide or thoughts about killing people. Huh? Why’d she give me an antidepression med?

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  11. Good afternoon, meeses! Monday …

    It is 92 and sunny. I got my walk in before it hit 90 but just barely. I got some loose ends tied off on projects I was working on and set up the rest of the week. Now I am waiting for a vendor to stop by but I am betting that he doesn’t show up – just a hunch based on previous communications.

    Last night the thin waxing crescent was in the western sky surrounded by clouds reflecting the sunset. Dazzling.

    See all y’all later!

  12. Tuesday Meese. Yesterday was weird – we had snow that didn’t stick. Today is going to be sunny going up to 45.

    Hurricane Melissa

    I'm not comfortable with the theme of this year's International Day of Forests ("Forests and Economies"). Forests already give us so many benefits. Jamaica's Forestry Department has embarked on a forest restoration initiative, after half of our forests were destroyed by Hurricane Melissa.

  13. Good morning. Getting ready for work, and to exercise at lunch. Still changing my mind about 10 times every day about going to No Kings.

    • We have very ambitious No Kings here. People are being encouraged to gather on every street corner on Oracle Road which is a main north-south road here. I don’t think I will go, there are really a lot of rabid MAGAts here. I think they are getting nervous about losing power and may become more unhinged.

  14. It’s 52 heading for 69, overcast with a 5% chance of rain. Although it is supposed to clear off sometime this afternoon. Yesterday we generated 14.72 KWHs and the m-t-d at 264.08 gained another smidge.

    Our city council was bribed or suckered into changing our recycle program from curb-side sorting to “single stream”. Which I didn’t know about until 6 months after it had passed. (I’m really out of touch with my political sources these days. Or rather my political sources are either no longer political sources or have – literally, not ableist – hit the stage of dementia that they no longer give useful information.) I did talk to 2 councilors about it over the last few weeks. The only one who voted against it is not really “my” councilor. She’s in the next ward over. The one who IS my councilor, well, she’s a nice and earnest person but she really didn’t pay attention to the workings of the program and just bought the hype. It’s supposed to be easier and encourage more people to recycle. I got the flyer about it – it starts in June. Well, it definitely is easier and safer for the employees. And it reduces the number of employees needed and since we’ve been running short-handed for several years that’s good. But as far as the “customer” is concerned it makes more work while contaminating part of the stream. As it is, all 5 categories of recyclables – aluminum cans, steel cans, glass bottles & jars, clean/dry paper/junk mail (contained in a paper bag or cardboard box), and clean/dry cardboard all go into a singe tub that’s picked up weekly and sorted at the curb so no non-recyclables, contaminants or contaminated stuff ever make it into the truck. (Can cause back issues, cuts, and repetitive-motion issues with those doing the sorting.) With the new program, 4 of the 5 go into a much larger tub that will be mechanically lifted and dumped into the single-stream recycle truck (very big potential for contaminating the paper & cardboard) to be mechanically sorted later still on a weekly basis while the glass goes into our original smaller tubs kept totally out of the single stream mixture as it is now but picked up every other week. Anybody who thinks that’s going to encourage people who aren’t already recycling to recycle. . . I have a bridge to sell them.

    Oh well, off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

    • Could they make it more complicated? Sheesh. I think changes like that are intended to make it so people say “let’s not recycle any longer.”

      • I agree. And I wonder why 7 out of the 8 council members were so very adamant on changing to this – w/o even a trial as the 8th council member suggested.

  15. Good Tuesday morning, Meese! Sunny and freezing in Ashburn today. I must rush off to Costco to finish setting up the new phone, then to get my hair done and do a little grocery shopping, and then home before my doctor appointment this afternoon. This is going to be a busy day and on top of it all, I have a cold.

    Hope everyone at the Pond will have a good day!

  16. Good Just Barely Still Morning, meeses! Tuesday …

    It is 86 on its way up to 91. Sunny skies.

    Nothing new – still too busy and trying to get March projects done.

    See all y’all later!!

  17. Good morning. Getting ready for work. Nothing mych going on here except my constant wavering about Saturday.

  18. Good Wednesday morning, Moosekind! It’s gray and 40 F. in Ashburn today. Had a middlin’ night. To make up for yesterday, when there were long stretches of my doing Nothing-at-All, I’ll have to work extra hard today. ‘S’okay.

    I am having second thoughts about the SkaterBoy wig for my role in the play. I wore it while my stylist trimmed it yesterday, but it makes me look super-ugly. Even my own white corkscrew curls look better than that!

    Our local station, although Sinclair-owned, mentioned how airlines are no longer extending special privileges to Congressional flyers. I noticed that “Good Morning Merry-Car” pointedly refrained from mentioning it.

    Rehearsal tonight, so I must get busy. I’m still so intimidated by my new phone that I’m not using it much. I miss the button that’s still present on the iPhone 12.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  19. One widget safe 47 and the other says 58 (I’m betting on the 58) heading for 86 today and sunny so far. Yesterday we generated 13.98 KWHs and the m-t-d at 278.07 neither gained nor lost ground.

    Yesterday my laptop got very slow and kept dropping the wifi connection. I hope to heaven there isn’t a trojan in there somewhere the security thingies have missed. I rebooted which of course also updated. Then I had to turn off my computer to get my sound back (known issue w/ this laptop from when I bought it back in 2016 – restart disconnects the sound somewhere underneath so the computer doesn’t know it’s disconnected, shut down for 10 minutes reconnects it). But this time it couldn’t load my profile when it came up so I had to restart again. Did all the stuff I needed to get done for the rest of the day without sound. Then tried again with the shutdown. Got the sound back but then YouTube decided I was a bot and wouldn’t play anything on either DDG or Edge unless I signed into YouTube. Sigh. However this morning it seems to have thought better of it because I was able to get my “treadmill walking music” to play on Duck Player. Hope it lasts. 1st world problem I know. But still irritating.

    So. While I have rain sounds in the background, as usual for my “working day”, I’ll be off to my boosting. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

    • Oh, no! I hope you can get things working again!! Sadly, a computer from 2016 is not very secure any longer. If you are still running Windows 10, even with a good anti-virus, it will quickly become impossible to keep it safe – Microsoft ended support on it last fall. :(
