Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: February 1st

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good afternoon, meeses! Wednesday …

It is 77 degrees and sunny, lovely weather which I embrace. My feet get cold.

I did not get my complete list of projects done today but I was able to make progress on most. I am down to one that I need to do this week and if I can get it out tomorrow, I will feel like a success.

    See all y’all tomorrow!

  2. Early Thursday Meese. 6 degrees here in Kingston atm going up to 29.

  3. Good morning. Back to cold, but because this is Texas, we’ll have a warm, sunny afternoon. I hope today brings fewer horrors – that’s really the best we can hope for these days.

  4. It’s 27 heading for 60 and clearing off. Which is nice. My PV system isn’t loading data this morning. The site itself is loaded, just not the information. So I’m going from memory on what it was last night when I closed it. We generated over 5 KWHs and the m-t-d was a little over 31 – just a tad short of on track. Hopefully whatever the techbros are doing to it (more unhelpful updates I assume) will resolve shortly.

Now that all my firewood is on the sunporch I need to shift the pallets around. When I lived alone having the wood on the edge of the carport worked fine. But not only is Natalia’s 2015 Toyota wider than my 1999 Subaru but we also go places together upon occasion and with the firewood on the carport it’s difficult to get in on the passenger side. I’ve ordered another load of wood to be delivered next week and I want the pallets placed where I want the wood to go before it gets here. (It’s comforting to think of things I can actually do something about to make better.)

    Off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  5. Good Thursday morning, Meese! It’s 23 F. and clear in Ashburn. Tomorrow is supposed to be cold, with snow, and the weekend impossibly windy.

Busy day yesterday. Interviewed two diabetic residents in two different locations for the article I’m to write. The horror stories I heard yesterday boggled my mind. Both residents had devices: the one with childhood-onset diabetes had a little metal box and the other had a glucose monitor in the form of a disc. By the time I finished I felt I had enough material for two articles.

Last night for the play we worked on blocking. I don’t like this play (so far) and am amazed that New Yorkers spent money to see it. But that’s just me, an old curmudgeon. Tomorrow I’m supposed to get my regular hearing aid back, thank Goddess! Also have to buy stuff for the Non-SuperBowl watch party on Sunday evening. Wish it would hurry up and get warmer. The changeover to daylight saving is happening in March. Dayum, how I hate losing that precious hour of sleep!

The washing machine repair person arrived and told me my habit of safety-pinning my socks together was causing a problem. I do that because socks often fail to mate in the washer and dryer, sliding off into the fourth dimension somewhere. Will have to resign myself to losing socks.

Need to type up my notes. I have a grief support group this afternoon, hope it won’t be boring. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

    • Daylight saving time doesn’t impact me directly – we don’t change our clocks – but it does require me to get up an hour earlier to connect to my client’s computers before they start work. If I start work at 5am, I am connecting to their computers at 6am and can get at least 2 hours of work in. After DST, if I connect at 5am, it is 7am their time and it shortens how much time I can work before they need their computers.

  6. Good morning, meeses! Thursday …

It is 64 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 73. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast. When I got up, the moon must have been straight overhead as she was casting no shadows, just pure moonlight.

It is such a sad thing that is happening / has happened to Savannah Guthrie’s mother here in Tucson. I can’t imagine making it through 84 years and then having your world upended and possibly your life lost because people would kidnap you to get money from your relatives. That a famous person has to worry about every person in their family – be terrified for them, really – is awful. I hope they don’t find that the son-in-law was somehow involved, it would destroy that family. :(

I finished the project I needed to get done this morning and two other little ones. Now I have a project that involves looking at my computer every hour or so and seeing if the program I started up is still running. I can do that. :)

    See all y’all later!

  7. Good afternoon, 56 and sunny in Bellingham today. RonK at the dermatologist having another suspect spot removed, from his leg this time. So far just removing the spots has been the treatment. Hope his luck holds! I’m basically ok but the Januaries seems to be Februaries now….really low energy and even lower motivation. I got the laundry under control yesterday, but today’s task is harder and so far procrastination is winning. Oh well, I usually find a way to cope so I’ll just do what I can. Best wishes to all.

  9. Good morning. Walked my 1.25 mi, it was chilly but not bad. Okay, I had my hands inside the sleeves of my sweatshirt for most of it, but better than last week. So here I am in the office, eating breakfast and sorta catching up on the news. Can you catch up and avoid at the same time?

  10. Good morning, meeses! Friday …

It is 55 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 73. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast. Yesterday, it stayed cloudy most of the day but with enough breaks to take a nice walk in the sun. The little lizards are back! They usually disappear during the cold winter months but I have seen them in several locations. I am sure the road runners are happy – it is one of the things they eat.

Is it okay to not give a rat’s ass about DHS losing their funding in a congressional standoff? Is there anything they do that is of value to ordinary non-MAGAt Americans? Also, how sad is it that bit coin is sucking as an investment? The sooner it stops being mainstreamed as an “alternate currency” the better for everyone. That the tRump family is getting rich off it is the biggest red flag ever – they are never involved in any legitimate business enterprises, everything they do is a scam and a fraud.

Softball season has started and my team, the 18th ranked Arizona Wildcats, swept a double-header yesterday. This weekend they play the #3 ranked Oklahoma Sooners. Lots of sports to watch!

We have reached the end of another work week and I can say I am mostly satisfied with what I have accomplished. I will have a hectic week next week and will be even more scarce than usual. I expect to be finally in sync with normal 2026 activities by the 15th.

    See all y’all later!

  11. Good Friday morning, Moosekind! It’s a dismal 21 F. in Ashburn right now, heading for 31 F. At 5 p.m. we’re supposed to get snow, and of course it will be too late in the day to enjoy the sight. There will be Arctic chill and winds this weekend, so we may be without electricity.

This morning when I got up and heard that Mango wants to rename Dulles International Airport and Penn Station with HIS name, which everyone in the U.K. knows is a synonym for “fart,” I almost spat out my teeth. It was bad enough when Washington National Airport was renamed Reagan National. (Everyone knows George Washington’s troops defended National Airport during the Revolutionary War, according to Mango.) Those of us in the District-Maryland-Virginia area who disliked Ronnie Ray Gun still call it “Washington National Airport.” That’s my first-world gripe of the day before I run off to do errands.

I have to go out in this frightful weather to do errands (getting the good hearing aid back is the first errand). Wishing all at the Pond a good day.

  12. Just saw this:

“EXTREME COLD WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 6 PM SATURDAY TO 1 PM EST SUNDAY

    * WHAT…Dangerously cold wind chills as low as 20 to 35 below zero
    expected.

    * WHERE…The Taconics and mid-Hudson Valley in eastern New York,
northwestern Connecticut, western Massachusetts and Bennington and
western Windham County in southern Vermont.

    * WHEN…From 6 PM Saturday to 1 PM EST Sunday.”

    I’m staying indoors

  13. It’s 47 heading for 60 & supposed to be sunny today. Which is nice. The effen little techbros at SolarEdge have now removed from my “solar monitoring” all information except the size of the system, location of the system, what it generated yesterday (10.6 KWHs) and what it’s in the process of generating today. No cumulative data whatsoever. No comparative data whatso ever. I will try to contact SolarEdge later today but forlorn hope there. I might as well not have a data portal and just go back to checking the inverter readouts in the morning while there’s still shade on that side of the building and I can actually see the readouts. I know we’re on track at the moment because I had the full data yesterday and I checked just before I signed off for the night.

I got my car back yesterday afternoon. I had to put it on my credit card because the company doesn’t take checks. Very irritating. But it’s a done deal now. Went by the library on my way home and got my keys. (Lang had dropped them when walking home from the last place/time the car died from overheating and somebody found them. Since my library card is on my key ring, they turned them in at the library.) I was driving home through evening traffic and definitely could tell the car no longer has an overheating problem.

    A little late getting started today because I did my taxes online this morning. It always takes longer than I think it will because there are so many variables I have to indicate don’t apply to me. LOL. And it always takes a while to get through the security verifications. Which I’m actually quite happy about, considering what it is. Free service for both feds & state because my income is under $50K. So that’s done. Or at least submitted. Off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  14. Good morning, 42 and cloudy in Bellingham today. Yesterday was a struggle but I finally got January’s desk work done and the February stacks are organized. It’s not that much work but I’ve got a weird anxiety going on so getting through that is the struggle. Oh well, I managed so on I go. As always, my best wishes to all.

  15. Well, I was right that I wouldn’t be able to get through to customer service at SolarEdge. On the other hand, when I went to the monitoring site a little bit ago, it was back to “normal” with all my data so that part’s good.

  16. Saturday Meese. Temp is going down to minus 1 here. Will be watching Bad Bunny tomorrow on all my devices. Don’t give a damn about the football game.

Bad Bunny is taking over the US. Does he want Puerto Rico to leave it?

    • I was watching the Olympics opening ceremony yesterday and hoping Bad Bunny would show up! He is the anti-Trump icon and I can’t get enough of seeing MAGAt heads explode over his popularity. Maybe JD Vance and Marco Rubio would have huffed and walked out of the Milano stadium – it would have improved air quality. Apparently slobbering tRump sycophant NBC cut away during the boos when JD Vance was shown. No one likes the American government.

  17. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

It is 57 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 75. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast. Too cloudy now to see the moon.

My softball team had an amazing comeback victory over the #3 ranked team with a Grand Slam in the 6th inning wiping out a deficit and putting them ahead. I have the game on replay and will watch it later today. Right now I have to clean up the stack of notes that accumulated on my desk this week.

    See all y’all later!

  18. Good morning. On my way to kickboxing. Got to cook this afternoon because Jim Harrington of the Texas Civil Rights Project is speaking at my church, and I definitely won’t have time tomorrow afternoon. Anyway, hi, happy Saturday.
